Rom Hosting: Where to host my rom (opinions)? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

The two most popular choices I see here for hosting Roms and other files that can not be saved to the ftp seems to be Rapidshare or Megaupload. I personally would like to see some more people look into www.putstuff.com
A few positives I see compared to the other two are much faster download speeds, no download limit, no wait downloads.
Feel free to post your opinions and suggestions.
Thanks

Dont take it the wrong way. But are you affiliated with them in any way.

Torrents, rapidshare, and putstuff would be my votes. I can't stand MegaUpload (I can't tell you how many times I've clicked a link for something there and wait the 1 minute or whatever it is, only to be told I'm maxed (when I haven't downloaded anything) and I will NOT use their bar tool).
Torrents are very easy IMO
Rapidshare I can tollerate now that I found I can put http://anonym.to/? infront of the URL and it will work through my VPN (this does not work with megaupload).
Putstuff seems fine. I was sort of wondering the same thing if trojan9x has something to do with them. No biggie, but was something I was starting to wonder.

no, not associated with them.
I only found them about a week ago when trying to host a file for someone here (the faria 3.3 camera patch). It worked flawlessly so I wanted to share it since I never had seen anyone use it here before.

Anyone else?

I vote for every host other than Rapidshare...It's ip filtering and waiting time kills me...

Marketplace "copy protection" cracked

I will not do anything with this, or publish how. But you can be assured the "warez" guys from that one site will figure this out within a day or so as well...
As most of you will know I am a software developer by trade, with some commercial offerings from my company.
And then there was Marketplace. For commercial devs, something nice to have. But if you have followed the news, the piracy protection for commercial developers is not much to speak of. See this document http://download.microsoft.com/downl...tplace for Mobile Anti-Piracy White Paper.pdf.
I will refrain from quoting the obvious mistakes in this document, if you give this thing a read, you will notice them soon enough. What it all comes down to is that there is no copy protection, not even at the advanced level, at least if they implement it in the way I interpret from reading that document.
So today I started up Marketplace and it worked. Hurrah. The current level of protection is making sure the CAB files are deleted upon install - which is obviously not a way to protect anything - but even this, I thought, should easily be circumventable.
Now, because I wanted to see how fast it could be done, I went with a hunch instead of doing any investigation. And that hunch worked like charm. It took me less than five minutes to circumvent this "protection", and get the ability to save the CABs the MarketPlace app downloads to a different folder. As the CAB file is the same for every downloader, you could just give this CAB you payed for out to all your friends.
Obviously I will not disclose the method, because that would be working against other commercial developers, and ultimately myself. It's just to let you know how ridiculously easy it is, and to give fair warning to those looking to sell apps on the Marketplace.
So, the moral of the story is... WTF MICROSOFT?
I know firsthand there is no such thing as perfect copy protection, but this is just plain ridiculous.
What we really need is for apps to be able to use our own copy protection schemes... you know, like the good web-based app stores out there.
EDIT: l3v5y has also succeeded in doing something similar, and it seems the WMPowerUser admin also found another easy way to do it... Yay, and it ain't even out yet!
Not even 12 hours after launch...that's pretty quick
Oh noes.... that's not good!
Imagine Microsoft reads this and decides to offset tomorrow's Marketplace launch...
Or even worse, Microsoft launches the Marketplace but developers decide not to submit their apps because they're concerned that their apps get pirated.
Thats what happens when devices aren't locked down.
That sounds bad, but it's really no different to how things are today. Perhaps there are some apps that have more security than either nothing or a serial key, but none that I use have anything more sophisticated.
Even as a developer myself, I'd easily take this over some DRMfest.
So, if I'm reading this correctly, when you buy something from marketplace it's not tied into your username with a password like most apps? Instead, you just buy it and it installs the app, but doesn't give you a cab? Yeah, I don't think it's that hard to work around that and get a cab for yourself. Some of the cheaper apps at Handango are like that. Can you re-download an app onto a new device or if you have to hard reset, and is it free or do you need to buy download protection like form Handango?
Good, copy protection pisses me off, all it does is piss of the genuine users. We have to deal with codes and activation to be legit, while people getting it free, just click here and there, copy a code here and huzah.
Copy protection doesnt work, someone will always find a way around it. Unless its linked to a windows live profile/xbox live profile. Which I can see probably happening when they bring out Zune on mobile phones, which sounds like it might be sooner rather than later!
I did something like this earlier... MS haven't quite got security done yet, though my guess is the iPhone is no better...
I'm really surprised by the lack of any drm; what's the point of signing in w/ one's Windows Live account? The easiest thing to do is to associate valid applications w/ one's Window's Live account. That's what itunes does for music at least (I don't know about apps as I don't have an iphone/ipod touch). Of course, what would happen is that an internet connection of some form is needed when the application is first installed, which could become inconvenient.
The truth of the matter is that the percentage or ratio of people who would bother to do this is pretty small. Most WinMo usersbarely even know how to setup e-mail not to mention install a cab file.
Most of the people in this forum already know how and where to get cracked apps or warez if they wanted too. I don't see this so called "flaw" as being an issue to MS or developers.
Must admit that I find it a bit worrying that your not able to make a backup of the applications you buy by taking a copy of the cab file somewhere safe.
After having sent back 4 HTC phones (two different models) in the last 10 months, and having an SD die on me I'd really like to know that I have a backup of anything I've paid for.
Can anyone confirm if its possible to reinstall something you've paid for through the Marketplace app if it gets removed from your phone, or you get another phone? ie if you log into Marketplace with the same Lice ID does it show apps that you've bought but which aren't on the phone your connected with?
If I look at an app that I have installed through Marketplace there is no install button anymore and Marketplace tells me that it is installed... so no obvious way to get the application back...
Not enough free apps on the UK store for me to mess about with really (have installed Shazam trial but don't want to risk uninstaling it just to see what happens).

looks like it keeps track of all apps you purchased.
ow well, I guess it's a matter of time when there will be sites that point to all the cabs available on upload sites and stuff. Just like those sites exists for iphone/ipod (appulo.us for example)
I guess that's what happens when people see that there a lot of apps available on other country stores..
what do you think...

Hi dicemaster,
How did you try this? Uninstalling and reinstalling on the same phone or another phone? Or the same phone after a hard reboot / content erase?
I'm just interested to know from what state you can get back to your purchased applicationsand whether is purely your windows live id that connects you to your purchases or if there is some device specific stuff checked as well.
Cheers,

Is there anything to stop Software Authors implementing (or continuing to use) their normal Serial number protection systems?
Looking at the Market Place, there are obviously some of the Big Names we all know and love, and I don't see why they would remove protection systems they have in place already, unless it was a MarketPlace requirement.
Personally, I can't say I'm at all impressed with the MarketPlace implementation - it heralds back to the early days of PocketPC. Maybe they're going for lowest common denominator hardware support, but frankly even the relatively poor Android marketplace on Hero is massively better. And the Appstore even more so. And I think Cydia tops most of them!
Let's hope that the MarketPlace at least drives prices down.
V
I am assuming it's more difficult then just going to \Windows\AppMgr\Install folder while the installer is running and copy the CAB file to another location. This is how I get the CAB files from PC only installers.
I personally use SKTracker a lot. I take a snapshot before, and then during the install and see what has changed. That generally tells me right where any install files/CABs are that I need to grab.

Microsoft does not support your own serial systems. There is no information you can compare runtime vs purchases either, so you can't roll your own. Well ok, you DO actually have device ID information you could use, but that way purchasers can only run the application on the phone they actually bought it on. It is not clear how 're-download' information will be transmitted. If that also transmits a device id, then it is possible to roll your own, though it would be pretty nasty.

If you go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync on your PC, you'll probably find an archive of many things that you installed over active sync.
SK Tools is a good way to re-pack any installed programs into cabs. I would guess that it works with programs from Market Place.

Why should he edit the URL? Are you using Chrome? I've noticed it likes to fail on forums and when the forum shortens URLs and puts the "..." in place of the text it has taken out, chrome will think the ... is part of the actual URL.
That along with a few other problems Chrome had given me, has made me switch back to Firefox.
Anyways, here's the link.
Apparently the company is having problems finding a Android/Java developer.
It was posted in March, and there had been one reply by someone interested. So I'm not sure if someone has taken this project on or not.
Anyone know anymore of a Ventrilo app coming?

He fixed the link (see edit), but I think the link issue may have been fixed in the latest Chrome (if it supports WebM it should work, but I am stuck using Firefox myself for various reasons even though it still has memory link issues, esp. with certain plugins =p).
contagous, as far as Ventrilo/TeamSpeak/etc, what cody said still stands. Because they choose to stay closed-source there isn't even a way for Android developers to "take a whack at it". Part of the issue is that some of the codex they use are copyrighted themselves, but it's mostly an issue of them being closed-source. I know how cool it'd be to be in a game and have your buddies on a on your phone (either via speakerphone or even better, a bluetooth headset), but based on what I know we won't see it soon.

oh and this has nothing to do with games , i speak to my family on vent a lot, because we can all be in the same place and chat. See they are all back in UK, and im in Seattle WA
Anyways thanks, and maybe one day
Make them get Skype then =p, I believe you can do voice conferences in there (I have the hardest time getting my friends to install Skype, they always say "Well not a lot of people I know use it", to which I often reply, "That's the problem! Just download it and get the ball rolling!" and then bang my head up against a solid object for a few minutes =p.
Everyone has Skype, Skype is good but everyone all in one place without push to talk to crazy, BUT BUT check this out

[Q] Verizon blocking File serving websites?

I was wondering if anyone encountered a problem with downloading files form file serving websites like rapidshare and megaupload.
I recently downloaded a file around 300mb off of megaupload using my 4G since my Wifi internet was too slow at the time, and now I cannot download anything from megaupload through my 4G anymore. It works fine using 3G or my Wifi connection. The webpage would load with the countdown timer and everything seems fine. When clicking on the download link a dialogue box pops up with a save option, but once i get pass that, the download doesnt start. It just stalls with "Waiting for Connection" Tried it with the stock browser, Dolphin Browser, and Boat Browser but none of them work. Tried clearing cache and history as well.
is verizon blocking these websites?
Any idea on how to get my 4G working on these servers again?
Thanks in advance.
I have a RapidShare account and I used to download all the time off there and megaupload as well. I haven't been able to download from those for several months. Mediafire still works though. Oh forgot to say RS and MU download fine when tethered to my laptop.

I noticed this as well. I think they have some sort of software monitoring going on. Possibly examining the packets as some have said. I did a number of tests of larger downloads from the phone and tethered. My results were mixed. As a large download starts it downloads at full bandwidth, most of the time. Then at some point before it finishes the connection is cut off or dropped in speed. This happened about 7 out of 10 times. I would bet they have something monitoring large or max bandwidth use and then cut the cord. Just my guess from testing the download reliability.
You can long press the download button and it should say something like "save link as". I don't think it has anything to do with Verizon cockblocking you, but everything to do with how mobile browsers handle MU.

Torrent ROM Downloads

Downloaded CM 7.2 RC1 today and found the torrent they posted. How would people here feel about torrents for ROM's on XDA? Could sure speed up things for people when a new ROM is posted.
With the way upload sites are nowadays, I'm game for anything.
I wouldn't mind either it probably would be a lot faster

I agree, Id like to see some torrents. but from experience, you would probably need to have a good amount of seeders to have good DL speeds

Yes this is true this would only work for the Hot top ROM's and only if people got into the game with it. I do hope some of the Dev's Jump in I would seed all the top ROM's right now with permission if given. This is not to replace the normal download links just to give people more options when sites like hotfile are dog slow or can't be reached.
I would love this. Not sure how to make one though. I use FrostWire (no, I don't download illegal music, don't worry ) for my torrents. They really do help.
Second this, i find torrents much easier expecially when internet/os is shaky. And UTorrent uses soooo much less memory than chrome

wikipedia said:
Simply, a torrent is data about a target file, though it contains no information about the content of the file. The only data that the torrent holds is information about the location of different pieces of the target file. Torrents work by dividing the target file into small information chunks, found on an unlimited number of different hosts. Through this method, torrents are able to download large files quickly. When a client (the recipient of a target file) has initiated a torrent download, the chunks of target file that are needed can be found easily, based on the data from the torrent itself. Once all the chunks are downloaded the client can assemble them into a usable form. Note: the torrent must be completed before it can be assembled into a usable form. This differs from conventional internet downloads which have only one host and are usable even if the file is incomplete.

Hope that helps.
TL;DR: It basically lets you download the ROM faster than a conventional http:// download. You would have to use a torrent program, such as uTorrent or BitTorrent.
Also, to answer your question...no.
Torrent Fu from the market had been rock solid for quite a while. The remote login setting can be extremely can be handy when your on the move.

What is it about using super slow androidfilehost?

I've been enjoying a medley of roms through the XDA forums for a little over a year now. While I'm always appreciative of the hard work others do for the community, I often wonder, what is it about androidfilehost.com that makes it a popular upload location for so many people? The download speeds for me from this site (and its mirrors) are so slow compared to just about any other, which make it a bear for downloading large roms, and some uploaders go so far to upload there and request no one mirror/re-upload anywhere else.
I get that if you sign up for the site you would expect better speeds, but as a free upload site for distribution, it seems pretty mediocre in terms of speed. I'm not intending to knock the site or anyone whatsoever, just looking for some additional info on why a seemingly slow site is so widely used.
I'm sitting here waiting for a ROM to finish downloading from one of the androidfilehost mirrors and I'm wondering the same thing. It looks like there's 6 mirrors hosting the file I want, and all but one of them don't seem to download any faster than ~250KBps. One starts out close to 1MB but quickly drops to 300KB. I don't get it. Is there some kind of ad revenue or incentive for the people hosting their files there?

I think the reason most use is bc its secure probably wont be shut down like some of the other hosting sites, and the amount of mirrors available in the states
I agree,
If the developers make money of the link to AFH than i understand, if not then i do not understand the uploads to AFH.
Now downloading 500mb rom wich is gonna take 2 hours to complete on a 100MBit fiberline.
Already had one disconnected download in the past,
3 hours!!!! of downloading and the last 1% it failed?
Unreal frikking slow downloads why not upload to usenet also?
I know not everyone has a payserver but it wouldt make it a whole lot easier.
standby... searching for mirrors....
I have been waiting 10 minutes for this to connect to a mirror. Haven't had any luck.
Tried:
Different browser
Different computer
Different network
Different file on AFH
Disabled Symantec
AFH is garbage!
Second that....AFH is very very slow and frustrating
I have tried downloading roms from there and now at multiple instances downloads failed after 50%. 50% of which was downloaded at speed of about 21 kbps. which is way less than any other download i do (above 300kbps).
Isnt it better to host ROMs torrents which way downloads can be better managed.
Please consider this.

That depends on the torrent you use.
Don't EVER use torrents that allow you to buy a pro version.
Try qbittorent which is free and recommended by many people.
If anything, try to avoid µTorrent as this will install bloatware along with advertisements and sharing public info.
Just do research and you will be a-okay. If you don't trust me for whatever reason use a VPN or a free anti-virus/malware like Bitdefender free antivirus edition.

I'm currently using Qbittorrent, and it works like a charm. It keeps me an excellent, consistent and stable download speed. I already know the disadvantages of utorrent such as dropping speed and worse stability, (and ads) so I changed to Qbittorrent as I read a blog post suggesting the benefits of using Qbittorrent. But I recently saw some articles that important files have been leaked out to the web when the seeding (100%) is turned on for a long time.
Files are still being uploaded from my PC when it is on.

Can't the staff apply a rule like "AndroidFileHost must not be the only download location for all your works" to all forum posts ?
It becomes insane year after year, I'm downloading around 50KB/s (I can go up to 1.3MB/s) and it even stops sometimes (and if I'm very unlucky it can completly crash too). I forgot to add that you can download... only if it finds a mirror for you (sometimes I have to refresh up to 3 times the page to get the only Québec available servers that are slow as f***).
Very ironic by the way to see in the XDA's website creator interview that he has created AFH because others were a bit slow.

AFH and XDA are closely associated, being a Recognized Contributor, Recognized Themer or Recognized Developers here at XDA even gets you a free "developer account" with unlimited space at AFH just for being a recognized member. Obviously, the Recognized members would use that to store their developments and share their work here, just because it's convenient and free.

Personally I think AFH as one of the biggest **** ever when it comes to download bigger files. It is not only slow but often breaks downloading. What a piece of garbage compared to the Google Drive.
Oh god, it's slower than dial up...
At this rate it'll take full 24 hours to download 1 GB, assuming it won't drop this download alltogether. There are no slower places to host a file in the whole world by now. Literally anything is better than that tarpit...
Oh yes, now it stopped completely for a whole 2 minutes without a single bit dripping from there... Great! Just great...
And it just keeps doing that.
