I am in the process of buying a XDA2 from Uplands on a contract and they have asked me to sign an "additional terms and conditions contract", which basically states that if I use a sim card other then the o2 one, I will be charge an additional £200 surcharge.
I would like to confirm if O2 can detect what sim card I am using it the XDA2, by tracking the imei number....?
Thanks and sorry if this questions does not meet your usual criterion?.
If you arent logging on to the O2 network they would not be aware of your presence on another providers network as far as I know.
Unless it is a FANTASTIC deal - say NO and then say you will go and buy from somewhere else!
I just had a mental picture of Uplands and O2 security sat in a back room somewhere, frantically scanning the airwaves for imei numbers that dont match up with the contract sim, as soon as one comes up they snatch up the walkie talkies and inform the security guys at HQ to send the snatch squad to the phone owners address and drag him in for questioning.
if i listen really closely i can almost hear then outside your window
I brought a nokia 6670 for approx. 320 US$ in may 2005. activated gprs from mobilink pakistan in august (i got that phone so i could surf internet and chat!)...and it's 500 pak.rupees per month for UNLIMITED gprs usage. 500rs. is about 8.5 US$.... yes... LESS THAN 10 US$ per month.
I wonder why that is so. btw, i use yahoo and msn messenger on the nokia6670. ;thinking of buying an i--mate but all confused. JAM here is for 33,000 pak rs. that's....560US$... with 128mb upgrade its about 593US$ but the guy at the shop said I can go aal the way upto 1GB which would cost 38,000 pak rs. (644US$)...
IS IT possible to use msn and yahoo messenger both on the i-mate or just msn?
also....i knw size matters and all. I like the big screen of the PDA2k but slide out keyboard seems risky... the PDA2 is available here too for 42,000 pak.rs. (711US$).. and K-JAM for about same price (711US$)....
I want something big screen and for large internet browsing so i enjoy watching pics, seeings movies, reading e-books etc. would need to stop wearing small pocket jeans though if i get the PDA2... so maybe K-JAM.
Also, whch out of these is most reliable as far as memory not getting lost and stability of system goes? no hanging/freezing etc.
Also, I use 2 SD cards with my cannon digital camera, one is 128mb and other is 256mb and i plan to use those with whichever IMATE i get. I have a 256 miniSD card with the nokia 6670. I wanna ask can I clip on the mini-sd card to it's holder and use that as a regular SD card on the Imate? I use the camera a lot for work so would love to be able to do that
Thinking of selling off the 6670 for about 200US$ and getting an i-mate in Jan.2006.. i look forward to being more active at this forum (great work admin after i do get an i-mate....JAM or K-JAM or what... :S Any advice and answers to questons above I'd be most thankful for.
sorry , one more question i forgot to ask!
Is EDGE technology dependent on the DEVICE or the service provider. I called my provider and the lady said it's regular gprs....
i'm asking coz the K-JAM has EDGE in it and the JAM doesn't...so...getting a K-JAM would mean faster browsing? not that i have a problem with the current gprs on the nokia... i even hook up the cellphone to my PC via USB when my regular cable isn't working and use the gprs... i mean, heck it's less tha 10US$ per month so it's my "backup"..
as u can see i've been doing research on all these imate models kind of stuff this last week on the internet before selling off the nokia6670 and buyng one of these

Don't know all the answers but,
You can get Agile messenger for free that you can use with MSN and Yahoo if you have no other means. I use them myself.
Mini SD will fit into adaptor and can be used on SD devices.
I popped into T-Mobile in Derby today and asked if they'll be getting the TC (I'm assuming it'll probably rebranded as the MDA Compact IV) anytime soon. The lady said they definitely will be getting it but didn't know when. When I asked her to hazard a guess she guesstimated end of Feb.
Just thought you might like to know
thanks not too long....
No way. I'm leaving T-mobile for the Polaris and 02 and the sales guy is trying to keep me on by offering all sorts of stuff including a free Touch Phone with accessories and a really good contract. If they were getting one soon he would have been in a better position to judge and tell me to hang on, instead he is offering me newer phones for free that haven't been released by T-mobile yet. If they are getting their version it will probably be in April or May. They are always 3 - 4 months behind o2.
Spoke to T-Mobile and they said they would not be selling the TC or a rebadged version of it.
Sounds like t-mobile dont know whats going on
I don't know what to believe to be honest. From experience, the guys and gals on the shop floor haven't got a clue what's coming until about a week before it arrives. That's why I said guesstimate not estimate
Really, o2 isn't an option for me. Nobody can compete with T-Mobile's web-n-walk at the moment. Yes, o2 offer an 'unlimited' plan but it's 200MB plus loads of fair usage restrictions. I'm away from home a lot so I use Internet Sharing for my laptop in the hotel rooms - I'd use 200MB up in about 2 hours! Plus I much prefer their Flext plan over fixed x mins and x texts plans of the other providers.
I also can't justify £300+ on buying an htc branded one.
I hope T-Mobile pull their finger out and get the TC sharpish! I have the Vario II (Hermes) at the moment and my battery's screwed - it barely lasts a day even without actually using it. I've just bought a new battery but I want some TouchFLO action!
Even if they eventually do TC, I guess you will be disappointed when they tell you the upgrade price...
I love my T-Mobile too, but I will have to switch to O2 to get a good deal on the phone.
i would love to have it on TMob but i need something by the end of Jan or I will lose my number. pretty sure im gonna go with O2.
Well, technically I have to wait 'til May before I can upgrade - that might be long enough for TMob to catch up!
My new battery has arrived as I type this it's a 1500mAh - It's lighter than the stock 1350mAh and the pack has a 'cheap' look to it - "Cameron Sino" branded (never heard of 'em!). It this doesn't improve the life I get out of it then I may claim on the insurance. My bank covers it on new for old so I may be able to convince them to replace it with htc branded polaris (probably wishful thinking).
I'm running a TC on T-Mobile (bought phone simm free which is expensive I know) but unless O2 have improved their data charges I'd never switch to them. I was with them until last year and it was a complete rip-off. T-Mobile's web'n'walk is unlimited (ok 1Gb fair-usage) and perfect for the TC.
If any UK T-Mobile user runs out of patience and wants to go the unbranded route then I can report that my unbranded UK HTC Touch Cruise works perfectly with my UK T-Mobile PAYG SIM card for both GSM and 3G.
When I first turned my TC on it offered to auto-configure the network for me; I let it and it set up both GSM and 3G and then defaulted to 3G for the connection. I'm paranoid about battery life so I went into phone settings and set the band manually to GSM but I have since switched it to 3G temporarily to try some browsing.

hi
Will the touch pro work with the "3" network? I ask because I understand they use a different frequency to most other UK networks.
thanks
Should work fine dude.
They just dont use GSM, they are a 3G (UMTS) only carrier.

Hi MrVanx .. cheers for thr reply.
It's just u found a stonker of a deal for myself;
6 month contract, 300 texts/minutes, internet max which is unlimited 3G/HSDPA, Free Nokia 3120/4GB Micro SD card (phone sells for at least £50). And this is for £20 a month. Buy through quidco and get £32.50 cashback, plus whatever i make on selling the nokia. So rather than costing us £120 for 6 months it should cost somewhere in the region of £50!
Not that I don't trust you there vanx but i think i might wander down to the local shop and try a 3 sim in there just to check it's ok =P
also 3 carry the kaiser and there's no huge differences in the network/connectivity areas between the Tytn 2/Raphael, right? Also what you're saying is as long as the handset has 3G it'll work with 3?
cheers

LOL, you are making things complicated for yourself just listen to mr Vanx, ANY european 3G phone will work with the 3UK network, but they have a strict policy of only using the phones they issue with their sims, so DO NOT go to the shop and ask or you will get a lecture on how 3 Sims only work with 3 phones and using their sims in other phones will erase all data and set your phone on fire.
They do this because if you use a 2G only phone with one of their sims it will force you onto the O2 network (their backup network if you need to make a call but are in an area with no 3G coverage), however they have to pay O2 by the minute when you use their network, even though for you it is just a part of your included minutes.
As long as you buy an HTC branded device offline then I can assure you it will work on any network (assuming the bands are supported in your country, as you're talking about 3 I am assuming you're UK based).
To address the O2 issue, in phone settings you can set the band to UMTS(2100) only which would solve that problem.
LOL I worked at Argos (still do but am leaving soon) and some of the pay-and-go hansets from 3 had the SIM card physically cemented into the device!! I couldnt believe it.

three always do good deals, just keep an eye on their website, my wife got a new nokia 6200 (a useful symbian phone that she uses with tomtom) + 1100 any network mins + 300 extra "3" only mins + every text she sends knocks only 1 min off her 1100 voice mins all for £19.50 per month, and this was direct from 3's web site
6 month Mix and Match 300 contract - http://threestore.three.co.uk/mixnmatchtariff.aspx?tariff=0
£32.50 cashback for the contract - http://www.quidco.com/3-mobile/
How much the free phone (Nokia 3120) goes for on ebay - http://phones.shop.ebay.co.uk/items...120&_sacat=3312&_fromfsb=0&_trksid=m270.l1313
I got my Touch Pro a couple of weeks ago.
Put my "3" SIM in, it configured everything itself. All working fine - no problems at all.
I guess the main downside having to be on 3G all the time is the huge hit on battery time... I personally wouldn't do that unless you're happy charging your phone all the time.

Actually, because of the way that 3G works and uses less power to hold on to a signal, you get better standby time on 3G than you do on GSM. But the higher power used while transmitting kinda buggers that up. That's why you always see Higher standby time but lower talk time for UMTS/HSDPA.

I know the theory, but I also know that I get two day+ from my Kaiser when I'm on 2G, and less than 10 hours when I'm on Auto/3G (minimum use, ie few calls, few texts, BT on for headphone/headset, bit of mp3). And I'm in a very good 3G area (more than 4 bars all the time), the mast is 2 blocks down, and I'm in a loft, so ideal reception... It's true that I use push email (instant), so I do use data (but why buy a touch pro if you only need text msg?).
So frankly, unless you're happy to get short battery life, or are charging most of the time (at a desk), I would try using 3 on a phone like the touch Pro. Maybe with an extended battery?
For years I've been with Orange and I last got a tytn1 recently replaced with a tytn2 because of repeated problems with the tytn1. last renewal I "upgraded to a n6301 for my wife to keep my contract price down. I am a band5 user and am on a Dolphin 40 websave. I have:
Dolphin 40 £30
websave eve n WE internet
500 mb +£5 peak use internet
100 mins loyalty reward (that dont include voicemail call... weird that one...) I
10.00 loyalty reward -£10
Orange Care +£6
Thing is I know I can do better ESPECIALLY as I havent upgraded for years and that a friend from PAYG got the same deal getting a contract AND a n95 which, at the time was new.
I need 400 xnet + unlimitted landline call and 250 texts or so and internet as I currently only have access through my phone.
The big one though is I want to actually UPGRADE and get a well deserved touch pro2 as it has the keyboard and I dont think the ACER is a great idea)
how do I get it? searching the internet comes up with a few places that suposedly do the touch pro2 on orange but I've not heard anything of these companies and am worried leaving orange direct. Can anyone advise me where to go for the best deal and to get this TP2? Otherwise it'l be cheap phone upgrade and max deal for minimum £PM so I could get the phone myself.
Lastly am I foolish sticking with Orange thinking my loyalty count for something?
I'd really apreciate any advice. I'm due to upgrade now
orange direct dont do the tp2 so you wil have to go through another company anyway, I would first phone up orange and ask if there is a way to use another company to upgrade through without having to leave and come back to them. As for staying with a company i dunno really I don't I switch the second I see a better deal, saying that my gf has been with o2 for years and she gets the most amazing deals every year I think she has 400mins unlimited texts unlim internet for £15/pm and she got a free e71. I on the other hand brought my touch hd sim free £500 and got a sim only deal from tmobile 600mins/unlimited texts/internet£20pm
also don't limit your choice to one phone until you have seen what deals you can get for example orange do the tg01 (no keyboard) they may give that to you for a really good price then you could sell it and buy whatever phone you wanted on ebay maybe, the n900 from nokia looks amazing although not wm (until wm7 I think thats a good thing- apart from no tomtom)
