is WM6 worth upgrading to?
what are the advantages of wm6 over wm5?
I have an MDA with the latest t-mobile rom.....the already weak MDA processor barely keeps the unit moving...... what will I gain in upgrading? how is wm6 different?

Try it for yourself.
It is faster, looks cooler, has more features

The WM6 rom I use, is ALOT faster the WM5 roms and it has alot better bat life.

WM6 v t-mobile 2.26 on mda
The wm6 rom RUU_mUn_aRTM_10_2_0_8_WWE-Fixed-Using.exe seems humongously faster on my MDA. The main issue is that I haven't been able to get it to recognize the new daylight savings time thus far, and the MS fixes don't install on wm6.
I'm a bit torn on whether to stick it out until the time changes in another 2 weeks here in US.
May be a few other minor kinks, but the stock rom had issues too. Best think about this is the swift response (it is almost like buying a new faster phone) and a few nice new features, more memory, and as a footnote the "eye candy".
Unlike the usual MS update crappola, this update wm5=>wm6 seems like it is actually better and/or more efficiently compiled code, as judged by responsiveness. For this reason it is worth having.

In my experience it is a whole lot faster even then the then new 8525 (Hermes) with the 400mHz that I have played with at the cingular store. I give Faria's new WM6 ROM two huge thumbs up!

In my experiences from going with different roms, some being wm6, then back to wm5, and now I'm back to WM6 again (Most Beautiful Edition)
I think it comes down to prefers and if it works for you. You'll have to try a couple of the new wm6 roms or wait until they release an official WWE one, but the interface does look better in my opinion. The nice new icons and upgrades in mobile office, messaging, pocket internet, etc make the device more usable. Again, I can tell you the bad things and the goods thing I've encounter with this, but just try it. If your're thinking that much about it, then you must not be fully happy with what you have now, and are just curious.

It runs better than WM5 as others said.
The official carrier release will have a bunch of carrier specific crap attached to it taking up space and slowing your device down.
What's going to happen is this: (IMO)
Chefs will start cooking the official released version creating more versions of WM6! If you don't hop onboard now, you will later!
If your device is a G3, concentrate on unlocking your CID 1st !
See ya after your first flash....once you start, you'll never stop!
You've been warned ... future rom junkie

Agree with dwny on two things here:
- WM6 RUNS better
- You WILL become a ROM junkie

wm5 or wm6
let me tell you that i had a t-mobile wm5 rom.
after i did the following:
1) unlock (sim)
2) cid-unlock
3) flash with orwells wm6
4) overclock it with batterystatus to 260mhz
how it runs?
smooth like hell. no freezings what so ever. the speed is tremendous.
the looks? great
all i can say, is that i used to switch roms every week but this one is on my wizard for more that 4 months

I must disrespectfully disagree...our overclocked wizard doesn't come close to the speed of a 8525...

Like a previous poster said, depends on your needs.
The general speed is better, interface and neat things.
If you are a POutlook Push user, the features are even better in this release than WM5. Minor things that making using the Push function real nice. Running Farias now, and now that I got it tweaked...running real nice.

HTC Kaiser

hi folks! what I wanted to know is; what do you think about the HTC Kaiser?
As soon as I can get my hands on it, i'm gonna buy one.
I have the HTC Tytn now for 3 months now but the kaiser looks better.
Not that the specs are so different than the tytn.
But the kaiser does look cooler and..it has gps! So let me know what you think of it!
note: hope there will be a htc kaiser section on XDA!

Remember the exciting news from last evening? Here it is! As you can imagine, we've seen our share of devices here at BGR, and I personally have combed through almost all. Let's start it off like this…the HTC Kaiser is the best darn Pocket PC I have ever used! It really has everything you have come to expect nowadays. For instance, it's a full Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which we prefer over the smartphone bastard child. Detailed internal specs include quad-band EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera, integrated GPS, WiFI, Bluetooth, a full QWERTY 'board, and a unique option that lets you tilt the screen to have it sit on your desk perfectly aimed at you. The Kaiser comes in a little thinner than the HTC TyTN, and a tad bit thicker than the HTC P4350, which at the end of the day doesn't make that much of a difference. The only possible downside at all I could find is that the HTC Kaiser could shave a few ounces off its weight. Nothing to get excited over though! Build quality is fantastic, and the GPS works extremely well. In addition, the 3 megapixel shooter takes wonderful photographs. The general public (sorry guys) should expect the full commercial release around October of this year. I am so going to be the cool kid on the block for a good couple months. Because I'm so in love with this device, we'll get a little more detailed in this mini-review and walk through, check the rest of the HTC Kaiser's highlights after the jump, or if you prefer skip right to the full unboxing gallery below!
-
Something we can be appreciative of, is the Kaiser's RAM, 128MB of it. 75MB are usable to the user for programs. Incredible! We also have 256MB of ROM as well built right in. HTC has integrated an application called Hubdog which I believe should work on various Pocket PCs. This is a RSS feed reader, podcast downloader, and even a mini blog publishing tool built right in! Right now it looks like it only supports Blogger at the moment, but hopefully that will change. As you'll see from the shots in the unboxing gallery, the HTC Kaiser has a little raised part on the battery cover which says GPS. Not only does this help keep your device from directly touching the surface you rest it on, it also provides just enough space in between the surface and the speaker, to let some of those music waveforms really shine. How is the speaker you ask? Extremely loud and crisp! On screen the device has a constant "H" by the network status bar indicating that HSDPA is in full effect! If you're not the daring type, HTC even gives you the option under settings to turn HSDPA off. Something featured on the HTC TyTN, that did not make it onto the HTC P4350 has reappeared on the Kaiser, and that is a scroll wheel. It is smaller and a little more refined than the TyTN's and does an excellent job at navigating.

Initially, yes. But after a few months it probably drops to half.
I'm curious how this compares to Nokia's E90 which is expected shortly.
Edit: the same site lists the E90 at USD 1299.99. Froogle on the other hand lists a couple of sites asking about USD 800 for the E90. So translating this to the Kaiser: 800 / 1300 * 1900 ≈ USD 1,170.00. Hmmm... still quite expensive.
Classic Mike!
Chuck is always on the job...

A little update on the Kaiser front:
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/06/14/htc-kaiser-delayed-till-august/
I wasn't sure what to make of it until I got a text message earlier today, followed by a phone call about 30 minutes ago. I've been going on about the Kaiser to my friend, who does some work for HTC, and guess what he was working on today?
Yup! Loading AT&T roms onto some Kaisers so they could be demoed.
He fished around for some info for me. Word from his supervisor is that the qualcomm ban isn't a big deal and that 'they' (HTC/Qualcomm??) would find a way around it. Obviously they must have if AT&T is looking into the phone already.
I hope this isn't old news, cause its new to me.

But thanks for the INFO

Which phone better then Tytn II ?

Hi,
Having used Tytn II for 6 months now, I guess there wont be any update regarding the display drivers from HTC, which is the main cause of annoyance. I am looking for suggestions/advice for buying something better then this PDA.
Thanks
If you don't mind leaving Windows, you should get a Nokia N96.
Or if you don't want to leave windows, you can get an HTC X7501. The only problem with that one is that its kinda big due to the 5" screen.

hey, i was kinda in the same boat as you, and ended up buying an n95-4 (the 8gb version). i used it for a few days, and now i'm back to my tilt. the biggest reasons are lack of html in ur emails, no qwerty, and no touchscreen. never knew how important those two are to me. wm also has a lot of free programs, and you dont have to deal with getting them signed (wtf is that??) anywayz, while we ***** and moan about lack of drivers, in all actuality, i think we have the best phone on the market...

ya thats one thing i hate about the n95-4, it feels like any crappy cheap phone. its light, not very solidly built (search for slider issues on these phones) and the entire layout of the phone feels the same as any free nokia... now to sell this phone, anybody wanna buy a brand new n95-4
I'll trade you an unlocked Wing for it.
Why is everyone forgetting to mention the world famous iPhone!!!
LOL
ha lol, na thats aiight, i can sell it for $600, easy... bunch of nokia freaks out there
Yea the iphone is good if u dont mind losing your QWERTY and u want something simple. i would compare it to a sidekick on speed. But not a bad phone overall
WOW!!! I was being sarcastic.....
I bought a N95 8gb, really nice piece of gear (would be even better if I could learn how to use the damn thing) great media functions BUT!!!!! there is now a new learning curve, wheres the the stick??? there is no stick no qwerty I have gotten use to win mobile and and using a stylus and qwerty keyboard...on the plus side Movie playback and games are Smoooooooooooth
this is the one

Will write a mini review in this thread after I have configured it and have used it for a few days.

Roll Call: Everyone: Are you still using Wing or Herald? Which ROM?

Hi... With less and less new ROM development for the Wing/Herald, it appears this hardware is being slowly but surely abandoned by XDA users. One sees 20,000 view counts for various ROMS here, but, just for example, the newest Herald/Wing ROM about to be released is Ivan's JUST STABLE.
Questions have been put before the audience of those likely to use this ROM, and there can't possibly be more than 8-10 regular users giving feedback.
Please help explain if demand has ground to a halt for these devices, simply by replying, and simply stating which ROM you currently use... and will you be switching again, or are you settled with your existing phone configuration.
thank you
ive been trying out ivans unofficial roms lately. theyve been badass so far. im jus waiting on a lite or clean, finished version......
I use gullums latest rom its great and cant find any bugs
ive been using ivans justme rom.. its really fast and i have no problems with it... im waiting for his 6.5
I just tried Ivan's JustcHome yesterday and Im using his 15v2w from his mediafire account. And so far they are nice but like what rdleezy said, Im waiting on a finished product.
I was running OTP 7.7 Manilla 2D Biggy before I tried them.
And Im pretty sure there's still a big demand out there.
Maybe people are just busy with other stuff.
Or maybe they are satisfied with their ROMs, but if something better and faster comes out, Im pretty sure people will be back. =)
Using Herald
using Herald here.. with Ivan's JustCHome unofficial release.. and its really one great bad ass rom! really like using this beta release so far. coupled with WM7 Titanium project, Ferrari Theme.. really works super wonderful! Thanks to Ivannnn!
Personally, I think the Wing/Herald is a dying breed. The Wing is still my most used phone in my collection. Regardless of the demand, I still expect that there will be new and improved content for the wing every so often. So hearing that there is less movement in the scene is just expected. There is newer technology out there that is better and faster in every way than the wing and herald. But it is the developers that decided how much of the captivated audience will stick to the current "dated" phones.

I totally agree -- and I discovered this in several ways: (1) when I replaced my MDA (prior generation phone) with the Wing two years ago, lo and behold it had the exact same processor and RAM -- there was no core improvement in the power of the device. The ergonomics were improved, and so on, but it was always an overly-priced phone compared the the MDA, which had almost the same guts. I remember complaining up the management chain to T-Mobile about this, and they they delivered the news back to me:
That in America the culture is very different than in Europe where people buy expensive phones at closer to their retail costs, but they are unlocked and not tied to a service provider -- vs in the USA -- consumers are used to less-expensive phones, so the carriers must heavily subsidize the costs of the phones with 2 year service contracts. Thus the iphone went down to an unheard of $199. ... When I was in Central Europe 2 years ago, people in Serbia, Hunary, Romania were buying far greater phones than I could even get in USA -- but they paid the direct costs....and they had phones completely 1 generation ahead of mine, with twice the processing power and RAM.
and (2) I stated to see the winding down of the Wing/Herald new ROM flow about 9 months ago... yet would still see huge activity in, for exmaple, the HTC Kaiser section here. When I asked some people about that, here in this forum, it was explained then again "but the Kaiser's a more powerful phone so it's still got more extended life capability".
All of this makes sense... But what doesn't make sense is that T-Mobile is STILL selling their obsolete phone model The Wing, for the same $350 with 2-year contract they did 2 years ago. That's only because they can get away with doing this because the American market is way less sophisticated in knowldge of higher end phones. This is what I have learned.
Yet, at the end of the day, the WING *can*, when operated on fast ROM, perform all the functions I need -- and it STILL has video and MMS messaging when even the 3G iphone did not. So, for me, in the same way Americans are now, inthese economic times, stopping buying new cars and instead keeping their cars for 2-3-4 more years, getting them repaired instead, so too I am keeping my WING and using it til I really need a new phone.
All of this is why I am thankful to those who are still cooking for the Herald/Wing... I've only been monitoring Ivan's new "Just Stable" after using 2 prior versions from the PDAviet site.
hey thanks for commenting folks... I think it's good to take stock and see what the demand IS here

Aserg's Rom
I use Aserg's Rom. I have used all versions of Open Touch but keep going back to Aserg's rom due to speed and reliability.
I still use papamopps latest ROM but i will try ivanmmj´s wm 6.5 when it´s done.
Hi Guys,
I used different different roms on my herald in the past.
I used OTP 7.4 and 7.7.
Am now testing every release Ivan brings out (both JustStable and JustChome)....
The one I am looking forward to the most is JustChome..
If I decide to buy another phone. I am definiately staying with windows Mobile...
The HTC Touch Pro2 is a good candidate.....
See Ya all...
Chongie
I'm currently using Ivan's Justme, and I must say I love it. When juststable releases, I'm sure I'll flash that. I was a big OTP fan, and still am, but Ivan's roms seem to be extremely stable and fast.
On a side note, I've grown tired of my wing, and have been thinking about the new Touch pro 2, but I bet it will be super expensive when released.
i was running OTP 7.5 pro for a while but now i run ivan JustCHome
WING user
i bought my WING from TMO late in its life (< 1 yr ago) . I expelled the TMO default rom within the first week of purchase. I change ROMs like I change clothes. I used papamopps for a while. I stuck with OPT ROMs also for a time. Tested Aserg's Roms. Alpha tested JustStable. Now on to JustcHome, because I like to be on the cutting edge. Overall I like the WING, and pleasantly surprised what a low powered PPC/Phone device can do. I'm looking foward to the rumored WING II when I can upgrade (I hope it is not overpriced, but drooling over 3G possibilities).
I have tried pretty much all the ROM's made here, with the exception of JustMe, JustcHome and others by Ivan. I haven't tried those because they require more in depth knowledge then all the others I have tried. And i don't have the time to learn it all.
I really like Aserg's stuff, for the amount of functionality you get and still have a lot of space is quiet amazing. It is fast, stable and I have been running it for several month without a hitch.

If im not mistaken, Yes thats the one. I tried them all except for Ivans latest, but im waiting on him to come out with his finished clean version. Ivans was the first
i used. I need to touch on all these people downing the wing, IT WAS THE **** WHEN A BOUGHT IT AND YOU STILL USING IT SO WHY HATE ON YOURSELF WAIT TILL YOU GET THE NEW PHONE OR GIVE UP THE WING THEN DIS IT. iM STICKING TO ANY WING THAT TOUCHDOWN. As soon as the wing II comes out im getting it. Wing III come out im gettin it. And just watch when Wing IV comes out... LMAFO!!!!
I used Gullum's for a while but am stuck with OTP 7.7 since the release - it's quite nice but a little slow and cramped at times imho.

Phones with keyboards - Android or WM, any manufacturer

Hey guys
I won't bore you with a long story so here goes the short one: I need a new phone, I currently have an Acer M900, I could buy another M900 but why not try another?
must have KEYBOARD!
Current choices and ruled out:
Omnia 2 - b7whateveritisbuthasakeyboard - No diferent to my Acer and no chefs
Milestone/Android - serious concerns over its keyboard, market access for non-network locked. Ruled out.
TP2 - lesser model than my current Acer and its HTC which i refuse to buy having been burnt several times.
So, are there any other top of the line phones with a keyboard i haven't considered?
Thanks!!!
Have you looked at the Sony Ericsson X2?
But only the TP2 has XDA developer support

Not heard of an X2 so will take a look but I know the X1 was somewhat of a disaster and also made by HTC.
omniapro b7610. its basically an omnia2 with a keyboard. (slightly smaller screen and internal storage...)
LG Expo (IQ). 1Ghz Snapdragon and wm6.5.
and yeah the xperia x2. looks really sweet but using old processor. not made by HTC.

Ruled that out.
The X2 does look good but you have just said my very first glance - old slow processor.
Any idea when the X10 is out? That looks spanky...
^just read on gsmarena it will be available in the uk next month.
start or end or no idea? I'm only back in the country for the first few days...... argh!
arghhh!!!
Very pricey and April
X2 will be awesome, and it's coming soon in the States (not sure about elsewhere).
The Expo too is a good phone for sure, what with Snapdragon and a nice keyboard.

Orb, i don't know how many times in the past I have told YOU I will never have another HTC manufactured device. I've also mentioned it in the original post. So thanks but, no thanks!

I looked at the X2 and all I can do is hope the processor is wrong on all the data sheets i've seen. How can they design a spanky phone like that and then put a processor in it thats older than my grandmother!
I can't find anything about the LG Expo, can anyone supply me a link? Is it out or due out in the next few days/weeks?

Sorry I forgot that...
but no need to get mad, I also pointed to a non HTC device
looks very stylish but, that snap on keyboard is not going to be handy when I need it as it will back in my draw in the office or something....
and only a 3mp camera in this day and age????
Yes but a VGA front camera!
And for the KB we should test it before having any 2nd thoughts...
Peace,
Still doesn't change the fact that the keyboard is not permanently attached - no matter how it "feels". Its not going to be with me all the time and a lot of that time will be "I wish I had my keyboard with me right now"

Also, I am not too fussed with that big blob in the middle of the keyboard.

What is your favorite device?

Hi everyone, I have been wondering what people think is the best phone on the market and why?
This thread is designed for those who want to purchase a new phone, but don't want to buy something that is only hyped and has no substance. By the people, For the People!
Please state the phone and your reason why it is your personal favorite. (Note: It could be any phone, even the iPhone 4.)
Thanks To all those who post!
I thought the Motorola Dynatac 800X was pretty coollio, last week!
My favorite phone by all means is (because I own it) HTC HD2. Mines is a TMOUS, but if you are planning on buying one get the world version its universal. Here is a video (not mine) on why the HD2 is better than iPhone 3GS in versus type explanation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9cOMoouatY&feature=related . The HD2 is a versatile device. It has the capability of running Windows Mobile 6.5, Windows Mobile 6.5.x, and new to the device many versions of android. I personally enjoy its big 4.3 inch screen. It has a pretty good 5 megapixel camera with a dual LED flash.
Exception: The phone overheats alot!
That's funny,

There are way to many phones out there to choose from. Money is also a variable. I have a HTC Doual Touch and I am happy with it for now. I am aware that it is not the best but it is good enough.

Whats funny is this was a monutmental breakthrough in cellular phones. The precvious model looked like a car battery with a phone on top. My neighboor got the first car/cell phone ever made and showed it off to the neighboorhood. It was funny because no one ,,,, got it. No one understood what that big ass cynderblock represented and what it would lead too. So when ever I see the older cell phones I think back to the original and laugh thinking, if you'd been carrying that car battery the past 2 years this thing looks like its from startrek.
I here there will be a new Brick just around the corner

WTF, mine never overheated, and im using it so hard >.<!
my favorite is the htc hd2 too, but thats because i love winmo, and i love the option to boot android too (wich works just awsome, better then i thought).
but for a totaly new person, i wouldnt recommend to buy a winmo 6.5 phone, cause that OS is sadly dying more and more, and the hd2 will probably the last winmo device.. ;(
i would wait for a new phone to come out..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=599210
I'd go for the hd2, I don't own it. But I like the device.
sent from my x10i that is banging for a 2.1 upgrade. ...
Now i have a motorola dext. pretty good phone, really.
But i love the NexusOne and the HD2, if i have money i buy one.
I love my HD2. Even before I Android running on it. WinMo is smooth as silk on it. I love options too.
I love my diamond,if i have money i would buy a desire!
