fastest browser on wm6 - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

which is it? Pie? Opera8.6? Maybe Netfront?
thanks for Your replies

Please do follow my articles (all cross-posted to the General forum here), I've published some real benchmark data on this q some weeks ago.
In a nutshell, in WM5 AKU2 (which also means AKU3 / Crossbow), PIE has been greatly enahced and is, now, pretty similar to that of Opera Mobile, teh, up to now, fastest full-fledged browser.
The upcoming NetFront 3.4 is also very fast (as opposed to version 3.3 used in full browsing mode)

IMHO opera8.65 is better than Pie ,wat do u say ?

Make sure you read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1358226 – you’ll find it VERY useful!
Also, make sure you follow my articles posted to the generic General forum forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256 ). I discuss Smartphone compliance in EVERY of my articles, but only post a note to this forum on the most important ones to avoid excessive flooding.
Unfortunately, unlike on the desktop, where there is a more or less solid and compatible (albeit pretty slow) official Flash implementation from Adobe (ex-Macromedia; from now on, I only refer to it as “Adobe”) itself (and the alternative, albeit a bit worse and much more CPU-hungry player integrated into NetFront), Smartphone users have always been left in the cold. Much as Adobe has been addressed several petitions (see for example THIS one at MoDaCo), the Smartphone still haven’t received a real Flash player.

You do know that I managed to get Flash to work on smartphones with WM6 do you?
Nice. Keep up the good work

Wowz! You RULE! I add the reference to the tutorial VERY soon!
(BTW, please, if you find a hack that can not only be applicable to the Vox but also all the other Smartphones, post at least an announcement to the General forum so that non-Vox users will be also notified.)
UPDATE (07/11/2007): Another heavy update: added the Flash hacking section (1.5.1.1 – use Ctrl-F to find it). A MUST!!!!
SEVERAL MAJOR updated have been posted in the meantime. This article is a MUST for ANYONE wanting to know how to browse the Web on a MS Smartphone!!!
(Please note that, currently, because of the 10kchar post limit and the consequent slicing-up problems, it’s on my blog that the latest version can be found, not here in the XDA-Dev forum. Sorry for the inconvenience / external links. The URL is http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=2084&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 ).
The updates:
UPDATE (07/11/2007): Article heavily updated: added the two IEM Registry hack sections; added the jB5 section.
UPDATE (07/11/2007): Another heavy update: added the Flash hacking section.
UPDATE (07/13/2007): Yet another heavy update: added the Opera Mobile WM6 registry fix section.
UPDATE (07/14/2007): Changes to the NetFront section. Thanks to AximSite / HowardForums forum member player911 for his remarks!

Waiting for Netfront Browser v3.5

Im currently using OperaMini 4 due to is pan/zoom functionality and general rendering speed. However due to it being Java it has some limitations.
So Im on the lookout for a next-gen native Windows Mobile Browser.
Netfront v3.5 looks promising (dont know if it is available to test yet);
http://www.access-company.com/products/netfrontmobile/browser/index.html
I know the Opera is also working on their next version of Opera Mobile with some similar features.
Bil
EDIT:
You can only download a beta version for Netfront v3.4 (expires Feb 29,2008)
Get it here;
http://www.access-company.com/products/netfrontmobile/browser/34_wm_tp.html
Not even 3.4 is finalized as yet - let alone 3.5.
Frankly, I don't expect much of the new NetFront version(s). Opera Mini, Mobile and, at times, IEM with a decent plug-in (like PIEPlus) are far more flexible and usable in general.
Ive been playing with v3.4 - but am not very impressed and Ive gone back to Opera Mini. Its not as fast or as easy to navigate. I did like the Visual Bookmarks (similar to Piscal bookmarks) which automatically link to your IE favorites.
Seeing the preview viedo for the next version v3.5 it seems smoother to navigate and pan/zoom. Also the speed seems better with the Optimization/Compression technology they are using.
So I will wait for v3.5 before deciding to switch from Opera Mini.....

Seeing is believing... and, let's not forget it's geography-dependent. For example, for a Chinese users with very slow international connections, Opera Mini might be a very bad choice. For a European or an American, it's the best.
If Access' compression server will only be situated in Japan, I don't think it'll be able to beat Opera Mini in terms of speed - at least not for European and US users.

SkyFire vs. Opera vs. Deepfish

Just out of curiosity, I'm acustomed to PIE as that is what my Excalibur came with, but slowely I'm getting sick of it and was wondering which one is the best overall browser and why.
I've been experimenting with Deepfish and I love it, the speed is blazing fast but as it is an Alpha version it lacks support and features.
So I'm left with either Skyfire or Opera Mini. Which Way to go?
I´m sure you already checked out this excellent post.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1202096
They each have there good and bad points. Can you make a "All of the above" choice?
1) Yes I looked at the above link, BUT, there are thousonds of spec sheets, but what really matters is the actual user experience and how many people use what.
I haven't used Opera Mobile but I tried Opera mini and maybe because I was new at it and using an unfamiliar interface it didn't seem all that good at the time. Deepfish is awesome but no java. SkyFire has a lot of other drawbacks but am not completely familiar with either. I played with my friends iPhone today (again) and I really love the browser, the rest of the phone is just average und for business just not usable. The browser seems to know how much to zoom into; the connection seems a lot faster than on my dash even though my friends line only ran at 166 kbps, whereas I ran 133 kbps from the same location (from dslreports.com speedtest). I think there is no Java support on the iPhone browser either (might be wrong).
2) I don't want to make all of the above because once you get on the internet you go on with 1 browser. When you switch websites you don't just go and start a new browser you wanna have a one for all tool.
ive been using opera standard instead of mini. is deepfish even available? i have the beta .6 skyfire and its too slow. right now, my main browser is the newest 9.5 opera ripped from the diamond. it works great. no qualms with it here
need opera mobile in there
yea i prefer opera mobile 9.5 over the other picks
Skyfire!!!!!!!!!
Opera Mini is the fastest but Skyfire is a stable full browser so i will pick Skyfire. Opera 8 is good too but it wasn't stable on my treo 700wx. Deepfish just sucks.

AJAX on Opera Browser

Hi, I' m an happy (?) user of htc touch pro unbranded.
I would like to ask a question: it is possible to make the opera "OEM" on htc support AJAX?
Opera 9.5 beta that you can download from the site can, so I thought someone already did it work on the "OEM" version too. I upgraded to 2808 and it supports flash too, but not ajax that is a feature it should.
Sorry if someone already solved this thing but I haven' t found anything with search function. And sorry for my awful english.
alessio
AJAX support is somewhat hit-or-miss. On some sites it works (such as dropbox), on other sites it doesn't (gmail/gmaps).
It probably depends on exactly what kind of AJAX you're talking about (data transaction or client-side effects) and how Opera handles any errors in the code.
You may also want to upgrade to a newer version such as 9.5 build 15202 (although the latest versions may not support Flash).
Well, before format i installed opera from the site and it loaded the site (www.erepublik.com) correctly. Now I upgraded the "OEM" version to the same build and it does not load correctly that site.
Mmm... how can I see what is the latest version, and how can I upgrade it?
P. S.: Doesn' t mind for the flash, it is only a bad thing with that keyboard popping...
Go to address opera:about to check the Opera version.
If you want to ugprade, search for "Opera" in the Development and Hacking forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260
To make it easier to find, do an Advanced Search, and choose to "Search titles only".
Be sure to pick the VGA version for your Touch Pro.
Thank you a lot!

Comment on IE5 vs IE6 for up-comming ROM's

Guy's,
What is your opinion about the new Internet Explorer Mobile 6?
Do we continue with the ordinary IE (IE5) or IE5 should have to be replaced by the IE6 in up-comming ROM's?
Cheers
ie6 is very slow. but it runs some scripts that ie5 doesnt.
i prefer opera mini
..........ummmmmm....unfortunately Opera isn't my choice.
My view point is, Opera simply renders the page nicely but in other way it's far worst than IE.
Page rendering is HORRIBLE on PIE6 imo. I personally have ditchend PIE for Skyfire anyhow, but just my opinion.
IMHO IE6 is better, more sites are showing correctly. More scripts are working. Zoom in/out is good. Its more slower on 64MB, but on my 128MB it is OK.
yes, I think IE60Mobile better....
for example it have "Search on page" function!
Just press Ctrl+F on keyboard
I will use it in my roms in future - I say "NO" to old PIE
Hi
I never got flashlite to run with IE 6, and it is very slow by normal standards. I do feel that ms could have done better, I have seen a beta IE 7 somewhere on xda but not sure if its a real release.
Be happy
Jay
I think IE6 would be much better with the time so I´ll say let´s keep with it
Anyway I normally use Opera Mobile 9.5 and it´s a lot better than IE
Cheers Tomal,
