battery life with gps on bike - General Topics

Hello everybody
How many hours (aproximately) it takes to drain battery when using gps on xda with integrated gps (like artemis, mio a701 etc.)?
It's possible to take a 8-10 hours trip with bike and turned on gps on the xda? Would it last that long?

No way.
Depending on how you set up your device, and depending on a specific phone you may get 4, 5 hours tops.
That's provided you do not use BT / WIFI at the same time, don't talk on the phone and keep the backlight down.
Also if you really want to maximize the battery life you would have to turn the phone off all together (flight mode).
However, you do have the option of carrying extra battery with you. I remember seeing a device (sorry cant remember name or company) that has a 3000+ mAh battery and USB HOST connection. You charge it at home and use it on the road to power / charge any device that takes power through USB cable.

Thanks for replay.
So using pda and gps mouse is better solution, right?
And how long lasts pda with bluetooth turned on? More than 10 hours?
Is it any difference in battery life when using pda with bluetooth 1.2 and one with 2.0? I read on wikipedia that 2.0 consume less energy. Is that true?

Hi,
With my JAMin and a bluetooth GPS I reckon I could maybe push up to nine hours of use, with backlight set to go off after a minute.
I would guess using the inbuilt GPS of the Artemis will reduce this quite a bit.
Regards

I recently went on an 8 day cycle ride with my jamin using tomtom to go from St Malo to Le Cap d'Agde. I have a shimano dyno hub in the front wheel. I set up switch box so that at night it would power the light but during the day would charge my phone.
My GPS lasts about 11hours so only needed charging every otherday. The phone ran on batteries while the gps was charging. Seemed to work quite well except over 30kph when the my regulator seemed to shut down as the voltage was too high for it.
As I had a constant power supply I was also able to play music from the phone to keep me entertained!

I would think this is probably the one levenum mentioned.
Do a search looking for "I-UP3600" this is a small external pack that will power an Artemis for about 6 hours if fully charged, before the Artemis stats to use its own power, very handy gadget. I did read somewhere that they were bring out a larger capacity pack around 5,6A/Hr (the numbers denote the capacity 3,6A/Hr is the one I use), look http://www.busytrade.com/tradeleads/tradeleadsInfo.php?messageID=179864

Found it.
Here is what I was talking about.

Extemly rapid battery depletion when using bluetooth headset

My Qtek2020 is linked to a bluetooth headset and the bluetooth setting is "on"; i was very surprised that after a full day outside after roughly 6 or 7hours, the battery which was full showed almost a total depletion of energy; Is there any way to get an "automatic" bluetooth mode on the Qtek2020 that would switch the bluetooth on only when needed or requested by the qTEK when an incoming phone is directed to the bluetooth headset or any way to implement bluettoth energy saving modes, as was done on the Spve200 or Qtek8080 by the people of Modaco; I also own a Spve200 and the tweaking of bluetooth modes they implemented is rather efficent and energy saving
Awaiting yourinput and tweaks for our <qtek2020 IMate, Mda2, i remain, Arnaud
Get a new battery. I have BT on 24/7 and charge twice a day, at most....
Thanks, i have already ordered two and i'm waiting for the delivery; You say you charge at most 2 times a day, could you tell me the time that elapses in bluetooth use from the first full charge until the battery low indication appears for the first time on the headset so i can have a better idea of the ranking of mine? Could you also tell me if your mobile network uses 1800 or 900 MHZ, because that could have a certain importance; Fyi Bouygues Telecom, one of my french networks, is a full 1800 mhz network;
Thanking you in advance, i remain

I never see the battery low indicator ! In standby i app. use 20% of the battery in 4 hours... So full changed in the morning, of to work (in the car on charger) and afre 8-9 huors on 50-60% And back home in the car on the charger...
Update :
Last nigh at 01:00 batterystate was at 92%
I left the device on the table with BT on.
Switched my HBH-35 BT headset off.
This morning at 10:00 the batterystat was at 78% !!
So on standby only 24% in 9 hours !!
Dunno if the XDA/MDA II uses more power if the Headset is switched on...
Does the XDA/MDA II keep a connection with a paired headset that is withing range ?
Battery Depletion/XDA1 plugin 1200mah batterypack on XDA2?
Thankyou very much for your continuous follow-up of this topic; I imagine that when both the Xda2 and the bluetooth headset are on , the energy drawn is higher than when only the Xda2 is on, as i think, but am not sure, that the bonded devices keep regurlarly interrogating each other to find about their whereabouts; But again that is pure supposition.
What i have noticed is that on my Qtek2020, with a full night's charge with the radio part off as well as the pda part off, Omega's one Battery indicator shows a figure around 7hours of available usage; When i switch the bluetooth headset and the bluetooth headset profile on the phone and hold a few conversations, lasting, let's say 30 min max, the indicated figure is pretty much close to 3 hours or so;
One good point is that if i put the phone on the craddle to charge-it , the the figure climbs , after also roughly 30 minutes ,to 5 available hours and still rising;
Are these figures in bluetooth headset bonded mode normal and close to normality or are these figures abnormal; If the latter case, what can be done to regenerate the battery while i wait for the additionnal ones i have ordered?
Last question: Tmobile' site offers also the former Xda1 batterypack and states that is compatible with XDA2; Is this the case, as this could also be a working solution to enhance the battery lifetime when you are away from your battery charger or craddle;
Thanking you in advance, once again, for all your valuable time and useful informations, i remain, Brgds, Arnaud

Ofcourse, but i'd rather go for the XDA/MDA II Backpack and get a CF-slot and VGA-out as an extra !! Afaik it costs € 170,= (app. $ 150,= ?)
Well if you are getting 5 hours on the battery, that is great, mine at 100% charge, phone on but NO BT, shows only 3 hours and this rapidly climbs down during the course of the day. Is this normal? Cause I have to charge it once again every evening around 4 pm to make it through the day till I hit bed.
The no# of hours remaining is an average on the past usage of the battery. Hence, i don't trust the figure...
Uses battery
bt uses a lot of battery!

Battery from 100% to 73% in 12 hours without doing nothing !!!

Hi to all of you !
I hard reseted my device and made this simple test.
Charged the battery to 100%, left the touch cruise on my table without doing nothing for 12 hours, then checked the battery status again ->73%
This does not seems normal to me !
Anyone else has this problem??

it depends on what rom you are using.
I also heard that by hard reseting or flashing other roms, you are erasing something on the memory and you need to cycle your battery like 4-5 times in order to work properly, yet again i might be wrong.
I am using the official WM6 french rom !
I also instaleld ACBTaskman and try to monitor battery usage but the POWER(mA) value is N/A when the USB cord is unpluged, is this normal?
Should I make the test with the USB cord pluged in ??

"without doing nothing"
That might be the problem. Perhaps if you left it without doing anything then it won't use up quite the same power.

Bloody foreigners?
Are you sure not falling in bug HTC models with GPS? Excessive battery drain CONFIRMED - FAQ added?
Hello,
Are you sure your phone does not automatically connect to the Internet so as to get those weather reports?
Is the HSDPA turned on? (Settings -> Connections -> HSDPA icon) If you do not need this, then set it to Off, Windows will prompt you to reset in order for this change to come into effect.
Is Wifi turned on? This drains the battery quite quickly
Does the backlight switches off when your phone is not in use? (Settings->System->Backlight icon). If not, make sure it does!
Finally, I use PowerGuard which is free. It shows you a negative number for the amount of mA your device uses (i.e. your device draws current from battery), and when you plug in the charger it shows a positive one, indicating the battery is recharging. Mind you though, it will not measure anything, if your device is in the "off" state.
When running no program, I get a current consumption of around -35mA. So, according to another thread, I have the issue of the GPS bug... Frankly, I have never been able to have a current consumption of 1..3mA as this link suggests:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=371734
If anyone else has managed to get that current, please let me know!

NO weather update is disabled !

NO wifi is turned off

Yes it does switch off

I also use powerGuard, so should I set the PDA not to turn itself off so that I get a constant reading of the battery mA ?
What is the "off" state? Is it when I press the power button for 1 second?
I seem to see some power consumption peak every 5minutes for a couple of seconds (-300 to -400 mA), but have no idea where they come from ? Everything is disabled, my TC has just been hard reseted ?
Any other ideas?
Dag
What are you using 3G or GSM?
If you are using 3G and the radio reception is poor ...
TDO
3G is enabled in the phone, but it is mainly connected using EDGE or GSM.
I don't have 3G network at home!
ok, what about the HSDPA?
Is it feasible to disable 3G? I have no idea how 3G works, can it be the case that since it is not feasible to get a signal, your device having 3G turned on consumes most of its battery trying to find a singnal?
Battery can be drained faster if the signal reception is not very good...
If i leave the phone switched on with nothing running, i do not have those peaks you mentioned.I would say 400mA is quite high...
If I want to really check my TC, should I let the screen always on (with the lowest light) or should I tell it to turn the screen off after 2 minutes or so?
It seems that if the screen goes off the measure are not made any more by PowerGuard !
What do you think?
Yes it goes off, so I adjust it so it does not switch off after a couple of mins. I would not bother leaving it on, all night long, I guess, if you leave it on 5-10 mins it should be representative of what happens.
While in this mode (screen on, but dimmed), I rarely have a consumption above 200mA (that is -200mA), the usual one is around -35mA. I get some spikes as well, but certainly not -400mA.
If the screen goes off and leave it like this for say a min, and then switch on the screen again, (by pressing the power button once), I can see a really very low consumption for a few seconds. Although powerGuard does not measure battery drain while screen is off, it seems that power consumption does go down a little bit, when you leave the device without doing anything.
To be honest, I do not know what will happen if i leave mine overnight and unplugged. Maybe I get the same power consumption as yours....
How bright your screen is? Mine is really low, on the second line from the left, for both battery power and external power....
ok I got it! I made some test tonight and found the same results as yours. I also set the screen brigthness to its lowest possible level and get an average of -30 to -35 mA. I have peaks to -200 mA pretty often.
The peaks to -400mA was a misreading of the scale, sorry!
So know we know we have the same device and the same problem, what can we do about it !
Could it be a battery problem? Mine is a HTC model : POLA160, 3.7VDC, 1350mAh made by "Total wireless solutions".
What's yours? what's language is your devie in? Should we try on of the cooked 6.1 rom for the cruise?

Turn off the radio completely.
If the peaks disapear you know that you have a poor receiption.
Than the behavior is normal and you can't do anything. (every phone will show the same)

hi again,
i think i am fairly ok with the current consumption. Basically, I will listen to a couple of hours of music using core player every day, sometimes more, sometimes less. I may make a couple of phone calls as well... Depending on how long i spent listening to music, starting from 100% around 8am, I end up with 60-80% around 8pm.
60% after listening music for quite long (few hours) plus watching some video while in train, maybe 30 mins of video or so...
80% if i listen to music maybe for 1-2 hours max.
Mind you though, the battery meter will go down from 100 to 90 quite easily, but it will not go down from 60 to 50 so easily. I was trying to drain the battery one day, and while it showed around 60% I let it overnight. I do not remember the exact reading, but the next morning it was quite above 40%...
Essentially I would say this is a device which consumes quite lots of power, I always recharge it when i come back home. I reckon, it would not last beyond 3 days on a single charge, which is something I have accepted.
For long journeys in train or while waiting in airports, I know the battery will not last long, and in such cases I am sure I would like to watch a movie, or use messenger over GPRS or if I am in the airport maybe use WiFi... For these cases, I ordered a separate battery, my guess is, it is as big as the phone though
http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=12207
However when I am travelling, I always carry a handbag so I can keep the big battery in it. This is a 5400mA battery, and I have heard other users being happy with it. (HTC Cruise has an 1870mA I think)... There is also a battery for HTC Cruise which is 2200mA and you can put it in the phone actually (with a different back which also ships with the battery). Of course, this may not be an option for you..
Maybe switch it to Airplane mode and see what happens?
I am leaving mine switched on tonight as well, just out of curiosity, so I will let you know tomorrow
I am looking forward to you response!
I hard reseted my device again this morning, took away my 8gb card and installed PowerGuard again
Dag
Hello daghood,
I have to say I did that test and I think I have a quite considerably less power consumption than yours :/
Fully charged yesterday, took it off the USB at around 23:30. As of now, 9:40, I have an indication of 94%
I must admit I do not know what "Turn off the radio completely" means; this was suggested by another member (TDO). Does it imply turning on the airplane mode, where all communication features are disabled? I am not sure this would normally cause a dramatic decrease in power consumption, (I think someone mentioned it goes down from 37 to 30-35), BUT, if the source of the problem is in communication features, it should be helpful in your case.
If you disable all the telecom features and the power consumption is ok, then it means that something is "wrong" with the networking features (GPRS, GSM, EDGE, 3G, whatever, I do not know).
I know I asked this previously, but is that HSDPA disabled? Also, is there a way to disable 3G? I am sorry for asking these again, maybe it is simply a case of bad signal reception, I don't know...
mines idle consumption is 1% per hour with:
screen off
wifi off
bluetooth off
3g off
edge off
phone on
only quickmenu and batterystatus running
1% per hour = 100 hours, so maybe HTC meant 450 hours if the phone is off?
or it can be the stock wm6 version.......

Battery life for Polaris

Hi,
How long does it last for you guys? It has been less than a day for me. Is there something wrong?? If I have MSN through HSDPA on then it'll die out in like mid-day.
Is there a way to extend the battery life?

Usually if i run skype / otroralk (for gtalk) + listening mp3 it stands about a day.
Same here. It usually lasts about a day for me too. That's when I'm using Wifi and listening to MP3s.
HSDPA consumes a lot of power, in the 200-300mA range. Considering the Polaris battery has a capacity of 1300mAh, if you stay connected to HSDPA all the time with screen lit you will get something like 5-6 hours battery life, and my personal experience confirms that.
Just don't keep your data connection open all the time, or disable HSDPA. EDGE consumes half as much power, plain GSM something like one tenth.
Thanks guys,
This is really sucks...in terms of battery life
Seems to me that there 2 unavoidable givens with thiis device, despite the best efforts of those on this forum now and in the future:
1. its slow
2. battery life is poor
Cruel but true?
I simultaneously run TomTom for navigation, run.gps for route tracking (TT is using GPS so figure I may as well make good use of it!) and coreplayer for music (through earphones) with the pda on screen lock while on my motorbike and get just c. 4-5 hours Obviously would like more. How much power does the GSM/GPRS signal use? Any significant advantage in power use in turning phone off (can't answer it while on bike anyway!)?
Today, from 100%:
40 minutes of FM radio playing on way to work
Wrote several emails and texts during the day
Used gmaps with gps for about 1/2 hour at lunch
Refreshed RSS on Egress to read on the loo (including Engadget and Daily WTF - lots of images)).
3 hours mp3 at gym/on way home
a few texts and 2 mms this evening
About 1hrs worth of calls this evening
Now, 22:00, battery at 60%. That was a busy day for me - a normal day - constant exchange sync, 1hr mp3/radio and 1/2 texts - battery would still be at 80-90%.
I'd say that's quite impressive. Compared to my old Hermes it's amezin' (a la Scott Mills).
Admittedly, this is Edge network on 02. With my T-mobile sim with HSDPA on it wouldn't be nearly as good.
Hi nahguam,
I noticed when using HSDPA...it really heats up and takes double the battery life out of it.
How did you link up google map with your gps? Google map can't seem to find my gps for me.
I'm using AT&T's 3G network 95% of my day and I have been happy with the battery life. I have been keeping my screen brightness about the third lowest setting. I have my email checking often and I use the WMP about 45-60 minutes a day.
I came from an Atom Life and E10 X800 and had to plug them in very often, so the Touch Cruise has a great battery life in my opinion.

For gmaps with GPS I have left gmaps settings as "Set by Windows"
In Start > Settings > System tab : External GPS, I have these settings:

Pocket PC with best battery life on GPS?

Hi,
I'm looking for a Pocket PC windows device to mount on my bicycle - I need to run GPS navigation on the device - GPS receiver can be either built in or on bluetooth.
I need to know which device have best battery life running for example - TomTom or OziExplorer.
Screen size - 2.8" or 3.5" - other functions like GSM, etc - not necessary!
What about - HTC Touch, Touch HD and HTC P3600?
I have been using an HTC P3600 for a few weeks, (Company hand-me-down, replacing a Qtek 9100, (Wizard)).
The battery life on the P3600 is mediocre at best, but abysmal as soon as you start using GPS. It is possible to flatten it completely in under an hour! Even a simple Win32 program that I wrote to just read and display the WGS84 Lat/Long coordinates, no fancy map displays, still canes it. It seems just the act of turning on the GPS com port, which powers up the GPS unit, is responsible for the power drain. The battery may be on its way out, until I find a replacement the jury is still out.
I reckon you could struggle without some extra power, external battery or some regulated supply from a dynamo or similar.
Can't vouch for the newer HTC offerings, anyone else?
what i would do is get a tmobile wing with extended battery an an external gps unit. it would run all day and all night.
Polaris has a wonderful power consumption in my opinion.
Definitely use a bluetooth GPS, it'll take a lot of the strain off. As for battery usage with GPS Navigation, that's a good question. I've never measured the power usage differences between the programs I use; iGO8 and TomTom.
Bad part about the bicycle is you'll need to crank the backlight up, and that's a major killer. Where backlight is at 0% (on, but lowest) being 0 mA of usage, 40% backlight was 54mA and 100% backlight was 123mA on my Tilt. That means that going from the backlight dimmed completely to 100% adds 123mA of battery on top of what you're already doing. In case anyone asks, I say 0% = 0mA, because I did measurements relative to the backlight being all the way down. How many mA the backlight uses at its lowest setting, who knows. I didn't care for what information I wanted from the measurements.
Have you considered a PNA? At least if the batteries go dead, you can still make a call and you can still figure out where to go.
why would you need maximum backlight tho... you can use G-light to adjust backlight automatically and save battery..
and if you cycle at night.. minimum backlight is enough.

Why? The device goes in a standby mode for this 2 hours, or not?
I can't imagine that the power consumption is so large.
Do a search with devices which didn't shut off and stayed in standby, the battery was empty after a few days.
+1 on this being a dumb idea (assuming you have the unit installed in a vehicle with a car battery, its intended use).
I would be interested in having the option to extend it beyond 2 hours -- that isn't to say that I disagree with the comments that leaving it in standby indefinitely is an unwise idea but options for 3 or 4 hours would be welcome.
It's not a dumb idea and it doesn't draw that much current. I think it was about 60 or 70mA (And yes these are numbers I've seen) so even if you set standby to 6 or 24 hours you'd be fine. I also wonder how we can make this happen.

I just picked up a 2nd joying unit to play around with on my bench. I have it powered off a bench top power supply, and it draws 1A booting, and at idle, and ~300mA when ACC is removed and it goes to sleep. When it's fully off it draws no current (at least not enough to register on the analog gauge on the power supply).
Mine certainly doesn't draw a third of an amp in standby. It's a joying 4.4.4. I'm also using a high quality digital DVOM, not an analog gauge.
Dave
the new ownice C300 claims it has like a 48 hour standby:
Key Features:
*3S Quick Boot - Quick boot during thr 48 hours long sleep time.
http://www.ownice.com/Pro_car dvd player for Jeep Chrysler Dodge OL-6253T_386.html
Well that's pretty cool. Hopefully we can get that on ours also. I looked in build.prop as I Had read someone changed it there but I found nothing.
Dave
I agree that this is a pretty bad Idea.
Because not only the Radio needs power, if your car has a CAN-Bus system the CAN isn´t able to go to sleep till the radio is fully shutdown.
This means currents around 1A and this drains your battery under good conditions, in at least 3 days.
Not everyone uses canbus so giving us the option or at least someone who knows how to do it telling us how they managed to do it is helpful. I have personally confirmed fairly low and acceptable current draw in standby on my device. Obviously a user has to use due diligence to ensure a. they've got a decent battery, b. they have no other major parasitic draws to prevent problems. but due diligence is required when installing any aftermarket ROM anyway.

I'm just reporting what 5.1 joying units are drawing. The analog gauge on my power supply is plenty accurate. Obviously you're not going to see mA differences, on an analog gauge, but there's no way it's 230mA off. I can check it w/ my fluke dvm as well, but I'm sure it's accurate enough. The power supply is an old school kenwood PR18-3A, http://www.tequipment.net/KenwoodPR18-3A.html
It seems like this is just a value being passed by the Settings application/config -- no?
What would be more interesting to me is if there was a way implement the feature which keeps the radio on after you remove your key, until the door is opened.
It's called retained accessory power and If you have canbus you can make that happen.
Canbus is not relevant. This is a software change we need to make.
If you are wired up with a "connects2" harness, this is what interfaces with the canbus and I can confirm in my car, it draws 0mAh when the unit looses its acc power (even though the unit remains in standby mode).
The whole setup current draw is dependant on volume - when switched on with nothing playing, its about 1A. In standby its 250mAh.
I would not except this to dent my cars battery reseve over the 12 or so hours I would want to set this to.
Canbus can determine when door is opened and send a signal to head unit to initial sleep. When I get time I'll create a video to show the standby current draw i see (Well under 100mA).

I have two applications, neither one where I want it to ever shut down and require a bootup delay.
One is as a low-power home receiver with a 7" display. Currently there is nothing close to the UI in any home receiver at any cost as these Android head-ends. Having it take 100-200ma all the time is not important, especially to gain instant on ability.
The second application is in my car. With the 60kW battery, at a crazy draw like 1 amp, if the car sat idle without charging, it would take over 200 days to run down a fully charged battery. 2000 days for 100 ma draw! I have a custom app that logs all Can data, and it needs to run even when the car is "off" (which it really never is).
I suspect few people add a head end into an EV yet, but it is a growing market. Having the head end die after a few hours, or even 48 hours is silly for some situations and there really should be an option beyond 48 hours, preferably, 30 days or maybe "never".
