Dead or Brick PPC? Never! Let's Revive!! - General Topics

hi everyone! I just want you all to know that bricked wizards can be fixed. How?
Technical Part
the bootloader is stocked on a memory on the Wizard, however, if we messed it in anyway the PDA won't turn on anymore, but the thing we all forget: IT'S STILL A MEMORY!
so we still can access it without the PDA running.
HOW?
i've been reeding thousands of pages,i found many pictures and many tutorials how to access ANY memory and ANY PDA, didn't got a final solution for the Wizard (till now) but i'm still looking and i found many many pda's tutorials.
the whole idea is creating a (HOMEMADE JTAG) that makes a connection between the PC's LPT Port and the memory of the bricked device, many cables are shown on the internet and tested. there is a simple design to complex design.
The signals on the JTAG connector (dual row)
I will show you some images and links so you can keep looking with me to find together a solution...
this is an example for IPAQ 3600
http://openwince.sourceforge.net/jtag/iPAQ-3600/
looks promising hun?
today i will check if the TP1 and other points are LABELED on the Wizard just like the COMPAQ In the pictures
if so then we got the absolute solution
if not i will keep looking and i will put the solution in details as soon as i discover it.
all i need is some people to help me looking and testing with me. i would say be aware and don't do this.. but if you don't you'll still having a dead and bricked phone. you have to revive it (at your own responsibility).
i don't think it's very hard to do.... just little attention and we'll do it
the good story is: if you did this once you can keep the cable, so whenever you mess with it again you just (INSTALL) your bootloader like installing a game
SUCCEED for ONCE and you have a VAMPIRIC Wizard that doesn't die TILL you hit it's screen
check what that person has done to it's PDA for direct access whenever he wants:
http://www.gert-menke.de/jtag-howto/
hehe cool hen? just like a Floppy Disk
The Type of cables you can make:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Customizing/Hardware/JTAG_Cable
http://jtag-arm9.sourceforge.net/hardware.html
there's many other PDAs Fixed in This way:
http://repair4pda.org/handheld_jtag.html
i think we have a big chance that the connectors points on all board are the same (positions) or at least labeled.
please do not try anything until many one talks about it.
there's more info we have to gather together before proceeding.
and watch out the homemade JTAG has to be les than 15cm long to avoid noise...
please be active with me and i promise a solution for the Wizard as a start and later may help all other PDAs
ARE YOU WITH ME?
have fun!
Sincerly

Do not read this post--it's about HP

OK, so I've got HP iPAQ hx2400 Pocket PC.
I've got 20MB worth of software loaded on it and every time it gets hard reset, all the stuff is gone... I do have a backup image and can restore everything. Not a problem.
The problem arises because this unit is used by someone who has not been blessed with computer intelligence, so I am looking at customizing the ROM image, so that when it boots up everything is already there.
I've stumblled across mkrom utility, which allows one to create custom images, but I need to get more information on how it works and maybe some general background ifo on the subject.
Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.
Much obliged,

Maybe this could be a solution.
Have a look at SPB Clone which clones one machine to another, basically giving you a template device from which you can clone 10, or 10,000.
While you are at it, you might also like SPB Kiosk which can prevent access to cetain applets etc, which might help when noddy users go poking on htings they shouldn't.

my first upgrade

Dear Forum Members,
First off all, let me introduce myself, I am very fresh owner of that beautifull joy - HTC Kaiser, which I suppose may become a thing I was looking (unsuccessfully) for. I used Nokia Communicators for a long time, but missed some applications.
I am happy with the device, but have several problems with the default software inside. First of all during one month, three times my device rebooted and said that I have to upload EVERYTHING from the scratch and had no backup... Second, my device communicates through Bluetooth to sync the data with my computer but I am unable to use it as an access device to the internet via radio. I have to plug the USB cabel in to do so. Familiar people said I have to upgrade the software and it should solve all my problems.
As here in Poland our GSM operators have really poor support for its users I am unable to find ANY information about upgrading my devide. I went through your posts, but still have no idea where to start. Will each software work with my operator?
Would be great if someone could help me with choosing right piece of software or just giving some ideas where to start to learn myself.
Regards,
Wojciech

Ultimate 9502 upgrade ??

is there any hope that we can upgrade the ultimate 9502 to wm6.1 soon ????????
There is another thread on this a little further down, but so far i-Mate support is telling some people yes, and some people no - so I'm not sure.
so y cant some1 cook wm6.1 for imate 9502?
6.1 soon?
Signs of activity, or just wishful thinking?

Well we are trying to develop rom for imate 9502 but we are not getting enough support from the community. Check out the link in my signature and help the community in whatever way possible, so that we can build a working rom for the device.
This turned up in the Imate forums today. If anyone can translate from Polish it'd be great.
UniCom (Polish i-mate distributor) informed that i-mate confirmed OS update to WM 6.1 for 9502 and 8502.
The exact date will be announced soon.

Hmmm. Perhaps that's because you've set up shop outside of the community? 9502 users are thin on the ground as it is, so why fragment that user base further by trying to divert them off to a lightly used forum? There's a wide audience of ROM experts here at xda-dev, so wouldn't it be more productive to share your ideas here? I have enough forums to check everyday as it is, so I don't really need another one with limited content and only a handful of users.
OK, the 9502 hasn't got its own section on xda-dev (and isn't likely to). But neither has the i780, and that hasn't stopped very successful collaboration and development for that device right here at the home of ROM cooking.

Are we there yet?
Answer -NO STILL
So I personally doubt Imate will do it, I think its more likely they won't be around for long given the reports I read.
eg.
HTML:
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7733.html
I think this is interesting!
"Sales for the six-month ended of September are estimated at $20.6 Million compared to $46.2 Million for the same time last year. This resulted in an estimated operating loss of $10.8 Million loss compared to $29.4 Million loss for the same time last year. Our cash position is at $11.2 Million and stock at $9.1 Million with debtors of $3.9 Million and creditors of $2.6 Million."
If I am reading this right it sounds like a good thing sales are about half because now the losses are only about 1/3. To me it's obvious why they are delisting and the customer support is legendary for all the wrong reasons.
Looks like we need to make our own ROM if my 9502 will work like its supposed to.
calibration code !

Afterwards I used the remote alignment tool (attached) to retrieve the correct settings from the correctly aligned mda(after changing the registry key then rebooting the device) then made sure the file was saved on my pc....normally it's saved by default in the C:\Program Files\Code Factory\Remote Screen Alignment directory. The file was called WIZA200.dat. I did a soft reset then when the alignment screen came up I did the skip function in the remote screen alignment application and it automatically read the proper calibration from the wiza200.dat file and then properly calibrated my mda now my screen is properly calibrated even though i never ran the alignment wizard.
So here are the Instructions folks:
1. Download the latest activesync and connect your mda to your computer and verify your device is connected(not as guest)
2. Perform a soft/hard reset on your MDA then tap your screen to start the screen alignment wizard
3. Download the remote screen alignment tool attached and install it on your machine.
4. Download the wiza200.txt file attached and rename it to WIZA200.dat then put it in the C:\Program Files\Code Factory\Remote Screen Alignment directory on your computer
5. Ensure your MDA is connected to your pc(A green activesync Icon usually indicates a connection )
6. Open the remote screen alignment tool on your pc meanwhile your phone be displaying the alignment screen wizard.
7. Click SKIP in the screen alignment tool.
Assuming everything went fine a message box displaying "The operation has been completed successfully. Your device will be restarted." should pop up on your computer and your device should restart. Afterwards your phone will run the files it always does when you do a soft/hard reset then you touch screen should be properly calibrated and work fine.
thanks in adv !

No 3D Cube in TouchFLO

Hi all, i have a HTC Touch Cruise and have problems with the cube. The problem is that it is no cube. When i activate the TouchFLO-interface with the Sweeping from bottom to top-procedure it just fades down the today-screen to black and then displays one of the sides of the "Cube". If i sweep from side to side, it just fades out the current page and fades in the new page, there is no actual cube animation. I installed some software called TFLOSettings (Touch Settings), and according to that program i do have the 3D Cube animation activated -- Still, in TouchFLO i get no cube, only fade effects. :disappointed: :broken: :makingevilplotstopunishtheworld:
Anyone have any ideas how i can get the 3D cube effect to work with TouchFLO?
Additional information that perhaps might be usefull knowledge in this matter is that, when i received the device TouchFLO was actually deactivated and i had to activate it in the registry under "HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/OEM/TFLOSettings/EnableCube" (that key was 0 when i recieved the device).
(also, i do hope that i posted in the right place now)
Did you ever hard reset your device since you received it?
All your data is lost when you do that but it is the faster way to know if the ROM installed have the cube working.

Hi Kukatrap, many thanks for the reply. Unfortunately i cannot do hard reset since the device have been issued as special aid by the County Councils (Landsting) to help me to overcome difficulties with my memory. They have special software for this, and i fear this software will be lost if i do a hard reset. And in case the device will be restored with their special aid programs intact and installed, the device will be in the same state as when i received it, and then TouchFLO was totally deactivated.
Perhaps i have to install some animations or something to get the 3D to work.
Oh! I understand.
Well... not exactly what you are looking for but you can try installing this cube http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358102.
Looks like this cube is better than the default one, at least is easier to configure.
Regards.

Seems that you you have the Swedish rom as you refer to the Landsting. I have the same problem with my swedish TC and can't get the animation to work with 3x4 grid athough it works fine with standard config. I have made hard reset but that's no change. I belive it is a rom issue and the development ot the program is ceased so no patch is expected.
Plse inform if you think the other cube program is worth testing.
Good Luck

Hi andbertina, yes, i do indeed have a swedish device. Further more, i begin to suspect that the company (GEWA) that delivers the device to the Landstinget deliberately has crippled the Operating System in a couple of ways. I think they have done this to avoid TouchFLO to accidentally start up causing confusion and so on, because the main target groups to receive this device from Landstinget are mentally challenged people, people with various cogitative difficulties, people with dementia, people that recovers from stroke or people with various types of autism-related difficulties.

This seems like reasonable move, even if it might not look correct.
TouchFLO/Cube is nice and usefull, as long as person is completely aware of it's abilities.
If person has lover than average technical skills, TouchFLO/Cube can be very confusing. Not to mention if there is also some mental problem.
But, on the other hand, I don't see any sense why Landstinget choosed Polaris? Or any device with TouchFLO/Cube.
For targeted users they should have chosen as simple as possible devices...
Seems to me that, you need to keep you device in tact w/o doing any accidental hard resets... If that's the case, I wouldn't tinker with it at all! I especially wouldn't install 3rd party cubes or 3rd party config software. I cannot tell you how many times I've had to hard reset my phone due to software not optimised properly for my phone. I try to stick with manual registry edits when I want something done.
But if you insist on experimenting to get the TouchFlo Cube to work, I strongly suggest installing Sprite Backup, and backing up your device before proceeding any further.

It is in reality not The Landstinget that has chosen the HTC, but rather the company that customizes them, develop the special aids program and delivers them to The Landstinget, and i guess they choose it because it has most things like phone, radio, camera, GPS and so on. A while ago they had HP iPAQ RW6815 as hardware platform, but since that model is no longer in stock they choosed HTC Touch Cruise as replacement. They also have PDAs (without camera and phone) from HP, those PDAs preceded the more advanced models, and they are all Windows Mobile based, so it was natural to continue the development on Windows Mobile phones i guess (more job to write the special aids software from scratch on a new platform).
And i'm not going to complain, i really like it, i love the practically "limitless" possibilities of Windows Mobile, and since it's subscribed to me to aid me with my memory problems, the calendar in Windows mobile suits me better than anything in the special aids program, so i do not use the special aids program at all.

I found some information about this matter yesterday, and apparently the special software will be reinstalled as on delivery by a hard reset, the manuals for the software mentions this procedure as a possible remedy if the device starts to act up really bad. So i feel a bit more brave to experiment now.

[Q] Maybe someone knows this one...

A Good New Year for everyone.
I'm very frustrated with a HTC TRIN100 my daughter offered me recently. I've posted a question about how should i proceed as to flash the rom WM5 into WM6 (maybe to Mary 37) via Memory Card, once i do not know how to Sync the damned thing with M$ Active Sync, unfortunately untill now nobody cared to feed me back on this issue.
Meanwhile i've been trying to install some applications (lately: Xplore for WM...) and the .cab just wheels and wheels around and no joy -- nothing.
I'm so enraged with this piece of gadget that if it was my own acquisition, i swear i would through it into the garbage tin, but once it was a gift from my girlie, i feel i must restrain my aggressive ticks.
Anyway: would some 'simpatico' kind expert explain what can i do to mend this stupid situation: as long as i leave it the sails logo continue to wheel around and produce nothing in the stupid object and i will remain thankfuly obliged.
Would thank any objective help, of course.
HN
You flash the ROM with an RUU file. The RUU is an application you run on your PC with the phone connected.
Typically flashing from a memory card involves entering the bootloader and a few other unnecessary steps (if it can even be done with WM devices)
The only time I ever flash using a memory card is typically if I'm working on an Android device. Other than that it's RUU for me. Much simpler process.
