TomTom 5.2 crashes to desktop - HTC Tornado

Hi,
I'm able to run Tomtom 5.2 succesfully on my Qtek 8310, however it crashes out to the desktop very often.
I used to have a Qtek 2020 with Tomtom 3 and had the same problem until I changed the Sandisk SD card 1GB to a Transcend one (faster reading). Could this be the same problem ?
It puzzles me because the Sandisc mini-sd 1GB ran fine om my Motorola MPX 220 smartphone (Windows Mobile 4.2).
Anyone having the same problem ?

Yes, I'm having exactly the same problem and have so far been unable to come up with a fix.
I'm using an O2 XDA IQ with a Holux GPSlim236 BT GPS unit, version 5.2 of TomTom Mobile & a 1GB SanDisk mini SD.
Anyone have any pointers for us please?

Hello,
I managed to fix the problem by removing some programs from the phones' memory. I installed Clearvue OfficeSuite in the phones' memory and read somewhere in the forums that lack of memory could be a source of problems. I will do some more testing and keep you posted. Anyway I ordered a Transcend 80x 1GB miniSD at a local distributor (Belgium) for 31€, just to make sure.

Glad you got it sorted out!
When you say you removed some programs from the phone's memory, do you mean the Storage or Program memory?
At present all the progrms on mine have been installed to the storage card with the exception of a couple of very small utilities and ring tones.
Current memeory data is like this:
Storage memory: 17.95MB
Used: 16.83MB (pim.vol is 7.7MB of this)
Free: 1.06MB
Program Memory: 45.05MB
Used: 24.44MB
Free: 20.61MB
Could the low amount of available storage memory be the problem?
Do you have any other suggestions?

My program memory is about the same, but my storage is much higher, I have about 11MB free. I could be your problem.
Maybe following link could help you redirect your pim.vol (which is outlook I think) to your SD also and help you save storage memory.

I'll have another 30 min testdrive this evening from work to my house and see whether it crashes. I worked perfectly yesterday, after removing Clearvue.
Hope this helps you.

12 MB still not enough?
I have exactly the same problem as described here on my QTEK 8300.
I tried several GPS receivers, and I upgraded my ROM (AKU2), but that didn't change anything.
Based on the previous postings I tried to free up some memory, so I ended up with:
free storage memory: 12.13 MB
free program memory: 22.46 MB
Unfortunately, the problem has not disappeared.
Apparently 12 MB free storage memory is still not enough.
Has anybody been able to identify how much free memory is enough to run Tom Tom Mobile 5.21 on a QTEK 8300?
Has anybody been able to run Tom Tom Mobile 5.21 successfully on a QTEK 8300/8310 at all? Or is that simply impossible?
SVL... you suggested that 11 MB of free memory should be enough.
Was your testdrive successful?
So far I have never been able to use Tom Tom for more than 10 minutes.....
Gerard

Hi,
been away for a few days sorry for the late reply.
To answer your question yes I've been able to use it for over 30 minutes during my testing. I will leave on holiday 31 july by car to France so I'll be able to do some more testing.
My problem got solved by deinstalling Clearvue Officesuite from main memory, using a more recent BENELUX - map and deselecting POI's.
So it could be one of these three or all three together which made it work, I don't know. I don't really need POI's but I will test it out when I receive my Transcend mini-SD card.
Good luck,
SVL

Hi all,
I've managed to solve the problem and have successfully used TomTom Mobile 5 on my O2 XDA IQ! I've tested it over a few journeys now and it operates without a hitch.
First of all, I upgraded my MiniSD to a high speed card but this made no difference. I then uninstalled a number of applications (including the Clearview Suite) to try and free up some more memory, with no success. Every time I tried to run TomTom it would crash after just a few seconds.
Next I did a cold reset on the device (Clear Storage) and installed just TomTom on the new high speed memory card and the problem persisted! I started to suspect some fundamental incompatibility with the device and after a little research stumbled across a registry hack which removed the Smartphone application locking. I tried it out on a hunch and presto! TomTom ran flawlessly!
So, here’s what I did in order to get TomTom Mobile 5 working on my O2 XDA IQ:
(i) Used “Checklock.exe” (found at Smartphone.net) to see if my Smartphone was application locked.
(ii) It was, so I used PHM RegEdit, to remove the XDA IQ application locking by making the following registry changes:
(a) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001001 = 2
> Change the value data from “2” to “1”
(b) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001005 = 16
> Change the value data from “16” to “40”
(c) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\00001017 = 128
> Change the value data from “128” to “144”
(d) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Security\Policies\Policies
> Add new Dword value: "0000101b" Dword = “1”
(iii) Rebooted XDA IQ.
(iv) Used "Checklock.exe" again to check that the phone was not locked any more.
(v) Inserted my TomTom MiniSD card, TomTom automatically installed OK.
(vi) Made sure I had the “Currentmap.dat” file in the “\My Documents\TomTom” directory of the device and not the storage card.
(vii) Bonded my Holux GPSlim236 Bluetooth GPS receiver with my XDA IQ. During this process I changed the name of the device from the default to “GPS” (apparently the last three characters of the device name must be "GPS" for TomTom to recognise it) and assigned Outbound COM port 6 to it.
(vii) Made sure that the phone was switched on when running TomTom (it doesn’t appear to work if the phone is turned off).
(ix) Used it to navigate to the office and back.
(x) Held a party to celebrate!
Can't believe it was that hard, it almost seems like it's been designed not to work!
Anyway, hope this is useful to you all, please feedback your findings!

POIs and Tomtom do not go together in a QTEk 8300.....
After the last post from SVL I realized that I had selected some POI's.
I tried to deselect POIs, but TomTom crashed eveytime before I could exit the proram myself, so my changes were not saved...
Finally I restarted my smartphone by shortly disconnecting the battery, and I managed to deselect the POIs and exit TomTom myself.
Result: .... Today I was able to successfully use TomTom Mobile on my QTEK 8300 for more than 40 minutes. That's promising!
It means that I do not need the registry tweaks, and that 11 MB of free storage memory seems to be enough to run TomTom Mobile on a QTEK 8300, as long as you don't use the POIs.
I still wonder what is the reason that using the POIs makes TomTom instable on a QTEK 8300. Has anybody ever used TomTom Mobile including selected POis successfully on a QTEK 8300?
I will keep testing TomTom mobile on my QTEK 8300 in the coming weeks.
Would a faster memorycard solve the issue with POIs?
I'm using a standard Kindston Mini SD card of 1 GB at this moment...
Gerard

Hi all...I had a magician with the same problem....there were lots of forum comments on it but the best solution people came up with was to remove all the POI's from being viewed on the screen.
You can still navigate to a POI but not have them on the display.
This seemed to fix mine (and a couple of my mates problems) so assume it's same for SP5
Cheers

QTEK 8300 and Tom Tom Mobile
I have now used TomTom on my QTEK 8300 for a couple of hours.
As long as I do not show the POIs it is perfectly stable.
As soon as I want to see POIs the system crashes (maximum time before crash was 7 minutes, but most of the times it crashes immediately).
Memory does not seem to have an impact. The system worked perfectly with only 7 MB of free storage memory, and 13 MB of free program memory.
so... the conclusion is simple.... the POIs are causing the problem.
Now the interesting question is: what can I do to make the system stable even with the POIs ?
Or is that simply impossible?

had same problem with xda2i found this fix
it could possibly work for yours

PHM Reg Edit says 'Access Denied'! Help!
I am trying to change the registry settings on my XDA IQ to remove the application locking so things like Tom Tom can run freely as suggested by SVL/scallywagger but when I use PHM Reg Edit it simply states 'access denied' when I try to change a registry value.
Can anybody help me with this please? I am currently TomTom less and getting lost regularly!

I managed to solve this problem by copying the "TomTom" Directory containing the exe and all dll's to "program files/TomTom" on the phone's internal memory (keeping the map files on the storage card).
I assume that it can access the files faster of the internal memory and thats why its not crashing anymore.
Although my 1gig card is meant to be fast (Sandisk UltraII mini)! im just glad its working and Im not getting lost or having to reboot mid-journey.

At ST16:
Try this link for accessing the registry. It worked on my 8310:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=240179

Self signed root cert.
Only slightly related but I was able to use Scallywagger's registry hack to app unlock my IQ. This then enabled me to install a self signed certficate for our email server thus allowing push email!
I spent 1 hour on the phone to O2 trying to sort this!
Thanks again Scallywagger!

tomtom install
copy tomtom to the mcard then put mcard in the phone then start the cab files from the phone had to do this xda mini hope this might help

destinator navigation software

hello,
I am trying to use destinator navigation software.
Unfortunately 2 error messages are coming up frequently:
map: your current map is erased or damaged
(I tried reinstalling a couple of times, but keeps on coming up quite frequently)
- not enough memory space, need to close down another application
(if I click on it still does not work)
I am using an XDA1 in the UK.
many thanks for your help in advance
Unfortunatly I canot offer any help, exept I am using Destinator 3 on my XDA II and have not had any issues.. I have noticed that GPS software does use fair amount of ram.
It might pay to take a look and see how much memory you have assigned for your device, not sure if the XDA I is the same but this can be done as follows:
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Try giving as much memory as you can for Program memory and see if you still get the same problems... if you do simply put it back...
Another thing you can look at is your SD card, I am using a Kingston 512MB SD Card and every now and then I loose my maps, ejecting and reinserting the SD card fixes this problem, I have been told by the users on this forum that it's a problem with the 512MB Kingston SD card and the XDA II device...
Hope that this helps...
navigationsystem problem
thank you very much for your reply.
I am using a 128 MB ingetgral SD card, which I have moved in & out a couple of times now.
Shifting the memory towards program always resulted in an automatic readjustment...
Still getting the same error message
if anybody has some new suggetsions, please let me know
Hi golf
I'm not too sure what else it could be, how much RAM does your XDA have left? I know Destinator (and other GPS software) does need a bit of RAM to run, unfortunatly I'm also new to the GPS game on Pocket PC so can't offer too much advice but I'll see what I can find for you...
If I remember correctly Destinator 3 used about 20-30 MB of my Program RAM on my XDA... I could be wrong but thats about what I remember it being...
Please could you send me all your RAM settings...
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Allocated, In use and Free amounts for both Storage and Program... and I'll see if there is any thing I can see from those amounts...
Cheers!
I'll keep my eyes open for any other sujestions

TomTom Nav 3 on SD Card

Hi folks,
is there a way to place TT N3 on my 512 MB SD card? Since I've got the maps on it and TT N3 is of no use without them, I just would find it logical to put them together and remove the whole lot by taking the SD out.
The BT GPS receiver software should still stay on the MDA.
Thanks
It wont work because some files are also written to the main memory even if you choose sd card as install destination.
You can move the app itself over to SD but performance suffers badly and it results in frequent lock-ups. It's not a supported configuration and best avoided.
During installation of TTN3 I installed the app on Storage Card and not in Main memory. Indeed a few items are installed on main memory, but the main app itself resides on CD Card. I have not experienced a lockup o f TTN3 during normal use.
I am a happy user of TTN3 on SD Card.
O2 XDA-I 32 MB:
ROM Version: 4.01.16 ENG
ROM Date: 02/04/04
Radio Version: 4.16.00
Protocol version: 32S54
The lockups occur most on MDAII/XDA2/Qtek2020/iMate.
It is all dependent on the max. data-transfer rate of your SD-card.
I can run from SD fine, IF I do not use POI.
BTW: I dont see the advantage for MDAII/XDA2/Qtek2020/iMate to run completely from SD. With every Hard-reset you will have to re-install because of the tiny bits that are installed in main memory.
For XDA1 I can imaginge that limited memory space is a reason.
tomtom on sd
i have tomtom on my sd!
it can be done!
The app and all components in their own folders on the sd!
From my experience installing TomTom on the SD card does not seem to work to good…
Poor performance huh!!!!
hmmm not sure about the poor performance!
Could you advise me of what I will gain by adding TomTom3 to my XDA rather than my 512mb SD card?
I would love to know what I am missing out on speed wise!
After a short amount of time TomTom just starts to slow down and then dies!! - Installing TomTom into Main Memory or Storage/ExtRom works fine...
Jimbob, are you saying that you could remove your sd card and have a complete install of tomtom 3 on it, if you try the sd in another phone/pda I think you will find errors thrown up because files will be missing.
...
cruisin-thru
You are correct!
I have tried it! it works fine!

JimBobUk, there are other ways to point out that someone is wrong. Merlin was not offensive, so no reason for you to react like that.
now for the issue:
My experience is that TomTom can lock-up IF the data transfer rates of your SD-card are not high enough. I experienced this. It has nothing to do with TomTom itself, but with the maps/poi files.
I would like to know HOW you did install tomTom on the SD card completely. When I tried it I noticed some bits that were installed in main memory. Also the registry settings are in main memory. THIS means that if you put your SD-card in another (similar) device TomTom wont work. Also, after a hard-reset TomTom wont work.
These findings were reason enough for me NOT to install TomTom itself on SD.
Our US Editor is always looking for ways to install SatNav to memory cards and leave as much precious system memory free. He has been investigating which components of TomTom can safely be installed to a memory card and which need to remain in main memory.
His findings are about to be published in a short guide he has prepared on how best to achieve this with Tomtom Navigator. It requires some work and mods to the registry and there are parts of the install that need to be left installed in main memory if you want a stable system as well as registry entries etc.
It is not possible to install every element of TomTom Navigator to SD such that transferring the card to another device will allow access to TomTom.
i will put my card in another device that does not have TT3 installed and give you the results
......................
So there’s no confusion, I thought I would restate my experiences when installing and using TomTom 3 on an SD Storage Card…
When installing TomTom, for the application I specified that the installed location would be the SD Storage Card. Installation went smoothly and the following components were installed as follows:
Installed onto the SD Storage Card:
TomTom Navigator Voice
TomTom Navigator
Installed into Main Memory:
TomTom Wizard
TomTom GPS
What happens is that the components TomTom Navigator Voice and TomTom Navigator get installed on to the target specified during installation and components TomTom Wizard and TomTom GPS always get installed into Main Memory.
I then install the TomTom Maps on to the SD Storage Card.
The above installation all seemed to worked perfectly… but what I was finding was that when using TomTom in the car and after some time driving, TomTom seemed to slow down… what I mean by this is that the refreshing of the screen slowed down and began to become jerky… some time after this the device would hang which meant doing a soft reset (a little difficult when driving!!)
So I uninstalled TomTom and then reinstalled it, but this time I stated that the installed location for the application would be Main Memory, which meant that only the TomTom Maps would be installed onto the SD Storage Card. By doing this, it all seemed to fix the problem for me…. at the time I did not have time to investigate the reasons why I was having these problems, I just needed to have a working version of TomTom that I could rely on in the car.
The problem could not be anything to do with the number of processes running as I always made a point of closing everything first before running TomTom. Also if it was a process problem, then this would have affected TomTom irrespective of whether it was run from Main Memory or Storage Card.
My conclusion at the time was that it was not going to be suitable for me to run TomTom from the SD Storage Card, and therefore decided to install to Main Memory instead. This has recently changed, however, and I now run TomTom 3 from my Extended Rom which all seems to work great and frees up my Main Memory.
I hope this clarifies my experiences with TomTom 3.
Has anyone else got problems recieving phone calls whilst using TTN3 ?, my phone wont ring whilst TTN3 is running and i seem to miss all my calls,
Is there a solution to this at all ?
Cheers

When you run the installer you choose 'Storage Card' rather than 'Main Memory' but this does not install everything to storage card.
We will be publishing an in-depth guide to how to move everything that can be safely run from the storage card shortly at PocketGPSWorld. There are a few small files that need to be left in main memory to ensure stability.

I used the ExtendedRom Unlocker to gain access to the ExtRom, the download can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=567
I then copied the content from the ExtRom to my SD Storage Card and then deleted everything from the ExtRom.
When reinstalling TomTom you should now be able to select the ExtendedRom as the target installation location...
TomTom SD Card Install?
Hello,
Does anyone know whether it's possible to put an install for Tom Tom onto an SD Card?
I've got to install TT onto like 70 M1000s then ship them out. I'm concerned that the battery may die in transit and main memory will be wiped. In which case TT will need re-installing
I've gotta get an activation code for each copy of TT before installing it onto the M1000 and the install takes over 30mins
With activesync I'm not able to install it onto more than one unit at any one time but if I could copy the files direct to SD card and run the install from there I could save myself a lot of time and hassle! Plus if the battery runs out I could fire up the install and everything would be sweet.
My concern is putting the install onto the SD card and passing the activation code to it.
If anyone knows an answer to this I'd be grateful for some pointers!
Thanks

...ABOUT RAM IN 2005...

i have two questions about ram in 2005
first:
in 2005 version ram is used to run program ,so 128MB ram is all to program run.but i found one picture that 96 MB is given to program ,and another 32MB is given to some storage .
second:
according to the first question, sms is stored in ram or rom?and what about the other installed program?
thanks...
First Answer:
There are some versions of the XDA II rom modified by Buzz_Lightyear that convert a portion of the RAM on the device into additional storage memory. They loose the advantage of persistant storage, but gain additional space. Since I have yet to find an app for the device that really needs 128MB of run-time memory (Most I have managed to get my device up to is 80MB) this isn't too bad a trade-off (In my opinion).
Second Answer:
SMS, e-mails, contacts, and installed programs are stored in ROM (Or on the ramdisk if you have allocated part of the RAM as such.
Hope this helps!

THANK YOU
CAN YOU SPEAK CHINESE?
Nice to find you here, nomad.... I am finding 1.6c with 96mb Ram vision.
Ram On WM 2005
Hello All , I've managed to install the "WM2k5_1.60c.00WWE_XDA2_HIMALAYA" Rom on my Xda II (previous O/S was 2003 se)
As I've been browsing the forum it seems that most have apprx 32mb of storage space available but on mine i see only 14.54 and after unlocking Extended Rom I can see many files in there from (what I imagine to be) left over by my previous WM 2003 se . My question is . . . Why was this not deleted and added to the storage memory when i upgraded to WM 2005 and can anyone please explain to me how to go about adding/merging it with my Storage .
Any help would be much appreciated , Thank You
I've got the same issue, after installing WM2005 1.60c I only have 14.54 MB of storage memory. Any chance of increasing this as my ActiveSync file sync seems to be greater than 14.54MB and ActiveSync is giving me errors that I have run out of space

Hello Hmerali , The problem was solved by using the Hima_DOC_Tool_1.0
It will increase the Storage partition to 31MB.
Many Thanks To Buzz & His M8s for this and the WM 2005 , Good Work !!

thanks for that ... by the way does anyone get 'critical errors' when syncing with ActiveSync that says that sync has to start from scracth.
This casues my email sync settings to be reset.
Hello Again Hmerali .
I've been using ActiveSync Ver 4 and haven't had to many Problems .
There is a tool that will auto reboot the ActiveSync app instead of you having to reboot the computer over & over again incase of any error while syncing.

Creating Pseudo "Fake" Program Memory

My company just released a new addition of windows mobile (WM) based software. Before the release I decided that I would "anticipate" the release by purchasing an used HTC Mogul which the seller of the phone had installed WM 6.1 professional. Little did I know that my company requires 25 MB of program memory to be available when installing the software. I followed many of the suggestions made in other forum threads about "cleaning up" program memory but at best I couldn't get above 24 MB of program memory (i.e. oxios hibernate & MemMaid included). You can see how close I was, but I can't install this software without having ActiveSync running as well. Here are my questions:
1) Is there anyway to get the HTC Mogul program memory to be more than 25 MB? Total memory is almost 47MB. Does the system really take up that much program memory?
2) Is there any type of program that I could install that would show more memory than actually exists? Like a "Pseudo" program memory creating program.
What stinks is that my company requires you to activate your phone using desktop software while in activesync. My phone meets all minimum requirements but program memory. Anyone?
I suggest (though i doubt it's possble) you search for a CLEAN rom for your titan..
the cleaner the better
flash it and hope it will use less program memory.
about the fake app.. i never heard of one.
I used to use MobileSwap on my Dell Axim X51v. It creates a swap paging file on the SD card just like Windows does. That was well over a year ago, I don't know if it's still being updated or anything, but it ran on WM5 fine, should be ok on WM6
-crobs808
If you can't get a clean rom, why not just temporarily patch the program to run in 24mb rather than 25mb? It must be a hefty app to need all that ram, but does it really use 100% of the 25mb?
V
Please let me know where I can get MobileSwap
Please let me know where I can get MobileSwap. I searched the web, but could not find it. Thank you.

I've got a question:
Did you all have Copilot removed from storage card and system?
Could Copilot disturb TomTom?
There must be a reason why TomTom is that slow with my HD2.
Are you sure that TomTom isn't running in background when you start it?
Try to install TT on the phone, the maps can be installed on the sd card.
On my HD2 also 5 seconds with western europe card.
*Co pilot is still on my phone

First off, you're running a different version of TomTom to everyone else, try getting the same version and report back.
I've just noticed that my TomTom has now started to load slowly, the splash screen comes up for quite some time (30 seconds) and then the screen goes blank for a while (maybe 15 seconds) then TomTom loads but it takes forever.
I've just been messing about with the phone to work out what is going on. I've tried many different things but I think I've worked out what it is.
The latest PocketGPSWorld speed UK Speed Zone complete POIs (16th December) seem to have caused the problem!
I was happily using TomTom with no problems even since the ROM upgrade to v1.48 and I've not changed much other than installing latest BsB Tweaks 1.5 and the 3 HTC hotfixes for the phone, I've not added many files to the storage card etc.
I was using the PocketGPSWorld database from November with no issues.
I'm trying to work out if there is a specific POI which is doing it.

Scratch my previous post, I couldn't consistantly get it working smoothly and quickly 100% of the time by playing around with the POIs installed.
I have now resolved my problem of slow loading / strange behaviour and poor performance in TomTom by backing up the contents of my 8GB SanDisk memory card and then formating it on the phone again. I copied back the maps (Western European 1GB maps v840.2561) and the Program Files folder which contained the TomTom install (v7.916) as well as other programs (games etc.). It is now running perfectly again! I have all of my POIs back on the phone including all speed cameras.
I formatted my card which was originally in my old O2 XDA Orbit 2 when I first got the HD2 as music wasn't playing on it properly. Maybe I have been playing with it too much
Worth formatting the card if you are having problems I think!
I want TomTom for my HD2 but can't find it anywhere - can someone PM me a link to where I can get it?
Thanks
DT
I now have a new Storage Card, which is Class 6 and now TomTom starts within 4 Seconds! That means, in my case it was definitly a matter of a slow storage card!

I copied all tomtom files to microSD and hard reset. Pasted a link to navigator in the start menu and everything works fine. Quick to acquire a fix and no lags.
Here is all you need...

FYI:
I used 7.916.9189 for a very long time and never had issues related to Startup time or others...lately i decided to update to TTN_7.918.9193_VGA_black and started to have the Very Slow Startup times (>30sec)!!
So if you're planning to update to a newer version like i did...just stay still as there's no difference between both versions i stated! I'm going back to 7.916!

I'm also using TTNavigator 7.198.9193, with the latest available v855 W&CE map and have no lag...
Start up with HD2 is 3-4sec, start-up with Blackstone is a bit slower (why should that be?? ), but still 6-7sec
I think it's due to your memorycard.
Maybe your using a slow (class 2) memory card.
But since you hadn't have those long boot time before, I think you just need to format your mem card
So.... back up everything you need, format it and put everything back And the lag should've been gone
Grtz,
Degake
