Hi folks,
is there a way to place TT N3 on my 512 MB SD card? Since I've got the maps on it and TT N3 is of no use without them, I just would find it logical to put them together and remove the whole lot by taking the SD out.
The BT GPS receiver software should still stay on the MDA.
Thanks
It wont work because some files are also written to the main memory even if you choose sd card as install destination.
You can move the app itself over to SD but performance suffers badly and it results in frequent lock-ups. It's not a supported configuration and best avoided.
During installation of TTN3 I installed the app on Storage Card and not in Main memory. Indeed a few items are installed on main memory, but the main app itself resides on CD Card. I have not experienced a lockup o f TTN3 during normal use.
I am a happy user of TTN3 on SD Card.
O2 XDA-I 32 MB:
ROM Version: 4.01.16 ENG
ROM Date: 02/04/04
Radio Version: 4.16.00
Protocol version: 32S54
The lockups occur most on MDAII/XDA2/Qtek2020/iMate.
It is all dependent on the max. data-transfer rate of your SD-card.
I can run from SD fine, IF I do not use POI.
BTW: I dont see the advantage for MDAII/XDA2/Qtek2020/iMate to run completely from SD. With every Hard-reset you will have to re-install because of the tiny bits that are installed in main memory.
For XDA1 I can imaginge that limited memory space is a reason.
tomtom on sd
i have tomtom on my sd!
it can be done!
The app and all components in their own folders on the sd!
From my experience installing TomTom on the SD card does not seem to work to good…
Poor performance huh!!!!
hmmm not sure about the poor performance!
Could you advise me of what I will gain by adding TomTom3 to my XDA rather than my 512mb SD card?
I would love to know what I am missing out on speed wise!
After a short amount of time TomTom just starts to slow down and then dies!! - Installing TomTom into Main Memory or Storage/ExtRom works fine...
Jimbob, are you saying that you could remove your sd card and have a complete install of tomtom 3 on it, if you try the sd in another phone/pda I think you will find errors thrown up because files will be missing.
...
cruisin-thru
You are correct!
I have tried it! it works fine!

Thats not how it works!

As long as all other apps and utils are not running, TomTom will run at full capacity!

JimBobUk, there are other ways to point out that someone is wrong. Merlin was not offensive, so no reason for you to react like that.
now for the issue:
My experience is that TomTom can lock-up IF the data transfer rates of your SD-card are not high enough. I experienced this. It has nothing to do with TomTom itself, but with the maps/poi files.
I would like to know HOW you did install tomTom on the SD card completely. When I tried it I noticed some bits that were installed in main memory. Also the registry settings are in main memory. THIS means that if you put your SD-card in another (similar) device TomTom wont work. Also, after a hard-reset TomTom wont work.
These findings were reason enough for me NOT to install TomTom itself on SD.
Our US Editor is always looking for ways to install SatNav to memory cards and leave as much precious system memory free. He has been investigating which components of TomTom can safely be installed to a memory card and which need to remain in main memory.
His findings are about to be published in a short guide he has prepared on how best to achieve this with Tomtom Navigator. It requires some work and mods to the registry and there are parts of the install that need to be left installed in main memory if you want a stable system as well as registry entries etc.
It is not possible to install every element of TomTom Navigator to SD such that transferring the card to another device will allow access to TomTom.
i will put my card in another device that does not have TT3 installed and give you the results
......................
So there’s no confusion, I thought I would restate my experiences when installing and using TomTom 3 on an SD Storage Card…
When installing TomTom, for the application I specified that the installed location would be the SD Storage Card. Installation went smoothly and the following components were installed as follows:
Installed onto the SD Storage Card:
TomTom Navigator Voice
TomTom Navigator
Installed into Main Memory:
TomTom Wizard
TomTom GPS
What happens is that the components TomTom Navigator Voice and TomTom Navigator get installed on to the target specified during installation and components TomTom Wizard and TomTom GPS always get installed into Main Memory.
I then install the TomTom Maps on to the SD Storage Card.
The above installation all seemed to worked perfectly… but what I was finding was that when using TomTom in the car and after some time driving, TomTom seemed to slow down… what I mean by this is that the refreshing of the screen slowed down and began to become jerky… some time after this the device would hang which meant doing a soft reset (a little difficult when driving!!)
So I uninstalled TomTom and then reinstalled it, but this time I stated that the installed location for the application would be Main Memory, which meant that only the TomTom Maps would be installed onto the SD Storage Card. By doing this, it all seemed to fix the problem for me…. at the time I did not have time to investigate the reasons why I was having these problems, I just needed to have a working version of TomTom that I could rely on in the car.
The problem could not be anything to do with the number of processes running as I always made a point of closing everything first before running TomTom. Also if it was a process problem, then this would have affected TomTom irrespective of whether it was run from Main Memory or Storage Card.
My conclusion at the time was that it was not going to be suitable for me to run TomTom from the SD Storage Card, and therefore decided to install to Main Memory instead. This has recently changed, however, and I now run TomTom 3 from my Extended Rom which all seems to work great and frees up my Main Memory.
I hope this clarifies my experiences with TomTom 3.
Has anyone else got problems recieving phone calls whilst using TTN3 ?, my phone wont ring whilst TTN3 is running and i seem to miss all my calls,
Is there a solution to this at all ?
Cheers

When you run the installer you choose 'Storage Card' rather than 'Main Memory' but this does not install everything to storage card.
We will be publishing an in-depth guide to how to move everything that can be safely run from the storage card shortly at PocketGPSWorld. There are a few small files that need to be left in main memory to ensure stability.

I used the ExtendedRom Unlocker to gain access to the ExtRom, the download can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=567
I then copied the content from the ExtRom to my SD Storage Card and then deleted everything from the ExtRom.
When reinstalling TomTom you should now be able to select the ExtendedRom as the target installation location...
TomTom SD Card Install?
Hello,
Does anyone know whether it's possible to put an install for Tom Tom onto an SD Card?
I've got to install TT onto like 70 M1000s then ship them out. I'm concerned that the battery may die in transit and main memory will be wiped. In which case TT will need re-installing
I've gotta get an activation code for each copy of TT before installing it onto the M1000 and the install takes over 30mins
With activesync I'm not able to install it onto more than one unit at any one time but if I could copy the files direct to SD card and run the install from there I could save myself a lot of time and hassle! Plus if the battery runs out I could fire up the install and everything would be sweet.
My concern is putting the install onto the SD card and passing the activation code to it.
If anyone knows an answer to this I'd be grateful for some pointers!
Thanks

hello,
I am trying to use destinator navigation software.
Unfortunately 2 error messages are coming up frequently:
map: your current map is erased or damaged
(I tried reinstalling a couple of times, but keeps on coming up quite frequently)
- not enough memory space, need to close down another application
(if I click on it still does not work)
I am using an XDA1 in the UK.
many thanks for your help in advance
Unfortunatly I canot offer any help, exept I am using Destinator 3 on my XDA II and have not had any issues.. I have noticed that GPS software does use fair amount of ram.
It might pay to take a look and see how much memory you have assigned for your device, not sure if the XDA I is the same but this can be done as follows:
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Try giving as much memory as you can for Program memory and see if you still get the same problems... if you do simply put it back...
Another thing you can look at is your SD card, I am using a Kingston 512MB SD Card and every now and then I loose my maps, ejecting and reinserting the SD card fixes this problem, I have been told by the users on this forum that it's a problem with the 512MB Kingston SD card and the XDA II device...
Hope that this helps...
navigationsystem problem
thank you very much for your reply.
I am using a 128 MB ingetgral SD card, which I have moved in & out a couple of times now.
Shifting the memory towards program always resulted in an automatic readjustment...
Still getting the same error message
if anybody has some new suggetsions, please let me know
Hi golf
I'm not too sure what else it could be, how much RAM does your XDA have left? I know Destinator (and other GPS software) does need a bit of RAM to run, unfortunatly I'm also new to the GPS game on Pocket PC so can't offer too much advice but I'll see what I can find for you...
If I remember correctly Destinator 3 used about 20-30 MB of my Program RAM on my XDA... I could be wrong but thats about what I remember it being...
Please could you send me all your RAM settings...
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Allocated, In use and Free amounts for both Storage and Program... and I'll see if there is any thing I can see from those amounts...
Cheers!
I'll keep my eyes open for any other sujestions
I already have an SD card in my XDAIIi which NEEDS to be in the device in order for some applications to work.
However, I also need to install TomTom5. The versions of TomTom i have received are all on SD cards.
So, i have copied the content of the tomtom SD card, to my own SD card (keeping the file names/strcture the same).
I have installed tomtom5 using the cabs in the 2577 folder. When i go to activate it using the key provided in the box, it doesnt work.
I get an error telling me that the activation code is not correct.
Has anybody else tried similar, or know of any reason why this wont work?
This is doing the same thing on 3 copies that i own.
Any thoughts, or methods to get around this?
Im not trying to steal/distribute/crack the version, i only want to move the files to another place for my legit version.
I have contacted tomtom but they always take ages to reply.
I managed to copy all the tom tom stuff to my own SD card without any problems. I did an install of tomtom 5 to device, upgraded to 5.21, then I copied all the folders on the tom tom SD card to my own SD card. I then deleted some folders I reckoned I didn't need from my own SD card so that the only ones I'm left with are:
great britain map
licences
tomtom
voices
zip
Hope that helps.
Did you find a method to do it without installing from the original SD card first?
The problem I have is i am going to be handing out 650 devices with SD cards in them.
I want to put the install files onto the SD cards and setup a shortcut. If the owner of the device requires TomTom, they can install the application, then call the IT helpdesk to get a key/licence and to activate the product.
The probem i have at the moment is after doing the install, none of the valid licence keys seem to work.
I have found a method to get it working though, similar to your steps above. However when there are 650 devices in the field, you can imagine how many copies of tomtom they would lose on a spare sd card unless it was in their device all the time
I'm afraid I did the original install from the TomTom SD card.
Even if you said to TomTom 6 to be installed on the Storage Card, it will install itself on the MAIN memory !
Has someone managed to move the 2 biggest files:
- Tomtom navigator.exe (~2MB)
- data.chk (~2MB)
to the storage card to save (4MB here!!) the precious main memory ?
I have found nothing except this but it is for TomTom 5:
http://www.4winmobile.com/q-how-can...934.html?sid=494a2df12b48a1e8fdca8ae0e7bfb752
Yes, I moved the whole Tom Tom directory that is installed to the Main Memory, to the Storage Card and run the Navigator exe from there.
Another thing is if you do a Hard Reset you dont after reinstall it again, it will run directly from the Storage Card, you just have to create a shortcut.
The difficulty with copying everything across to the SD card is that TomTom Home then can't find the installation on the pocket PC. Have you found any way around this?
Andrew

Well, the only problem is that it is a little slower to startup and get going, but once thats done Ive never noticed any difference.
The only thing is you cannot use the Today plugin (but I never did anyway), I just created a new shortcut in the Start Menu, that does it for me.
I agree with coercri (although I don't find it is any slower to start from my SD card, probably because I stuck in a relatively fast card ). But that still doesn't get around the problem of not being able to update the POIs using TomTom Home (which is much more convenient than copying the individual files to a number of map sub-directories). Maybe the answer is a Registry hack to point the installation directory to the card. I will try it.
I don't use the Home application so this is why it has never bothered me, I donwload the Camera Updates and just copy them to the GBMAP directory.
Thanks for you advice. I moved my TomTom folder in Program Files from main memory to the SD card. It works great !
The speed is the same as on the main memory and the application load is as fast as on the main memory. Maybe this is due to the fact that I took a fast SD card.
I am not using TomTom Home so I don't have this problem. I suggest you use Resco Explorer Registry editing tool and make a search for '\Program Files\Navigator' you should find so occurrences, change them to '\<name of your storage card>\Program Files\Navigator'
Thanks for that. In the end, I simply went back to copying the OV2 files across.
Incidentally, I have now moved TomTom to the Extended ROM and it is faster than running from the SD Card.

Last week I posted about memory storage v programme. After getting v confused about it i uninstalled some apps from the device and instead loaded them to memory card (was this right or wrong?). That left me with 12Mb of storage memory free, I figured that was fine and so left it at that.
This week my device reported critical memory space - storage memory down to 0.12Mb!!!
I have un installed several more apps which I like and use to get to 3.55Mb of storage memory available, but even this is dropping and I dont know why.
Q have I got a virus? How can I tell?
Q Can I tell what is taking up space in memory? If yes how? please dont direct me to the "find" large files as all it shows me is stuff on the storage card.
Q If I install programs to the storage card, do they still take up room in storage memory? If so what benefit do I get from installing to MC?
All help greatly appreciated
Pete
No such thing as a WM virus. Chances are a lot better IE cache ate it all. Try deleting cache files thru IE's menu.
You gain memory by installing to a memory card but if the card comes loose, pops out, you forget it, etc, you're suddenly without your apps. I don't install anything to the card and generally have no problem. You might want to do a search on how to put your IE cache onto the card, tho. That'll solve a lot more problems than installing apps there will.
Try TreeSize
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-treesize-v1-00-03.html
This allows you to check the memory in use on your device.
there are a few known wm virus's but never heard about anybody getting one
think they were just made to show it could be don
the market of mw phones / pda's is much too small still for virus's to find their way to devices

I've got a question:
Did you all have Copilot removed from storage card and system?
Could Copilot disturb TomTom?
There must be a reason why TomTom is that slow with my HD2.
Are you sure that TomTom isn't running in background when you start it?
Try to install TT on the phone, the maps can be installed on the sd card.
On my HD2 also 5 seconds with western europe card.

First off, you're running a different version of TomTom to everyone else, try getting the same version and report back.
I've just noticed that my TomTom has now started to load slowly, the splash screen comes up for quite some time (30 seconds) and then the screen goes blank for a while (maybe 15 seconds) then TomTom loads but it takes forever.
I've just been messing about with the phone to work out what is going on. I've tried many different things but I think I've worked out what it is.
The latest PocketGPSWorld speed UK Speed Zone complete POIs (16th December) seem to have caused the problem!
I was happily using TomTom with no problems even since the ROM upgrade to v1.48 and I've not changed much other than installing latest BsB Tweaks 1.5 and the 3 HTC hotfixes for the phone, I've not added many files to the storage card etc.
I was using the PocketGPSWorld database from November with no issues.
I'm trying to work out if there is a specific POI which is doing it.
Scratch my previous post, I couldn't consistantly get it working smoothly and quickly 100% of the time by playing around with the POIs installed.
I have now resolved my problem of slow loading / strange behaviour and poor performance in TomTom by backing up the contents of my 8GB SanDisk memory card and then formating it on the phone again. I copied back the maps (Western European 1GB maps v840.2561) and the Program Files folder which contained the TomTom install (v7.916) as well as other programs (games etc.). It is now running perfectly again! I have all of my POIs back on the phone including all speed cameras.
I formatted my card which was originally in my old O2 XDA Orbit 2 when I first got the HD2 as music wasn't playing on it properly. Maybe I have been playing with it too much
Worth formatting the card if you are having problems I think!
I want TomTom for my HD2 but can't find it anywhere - can someone PM me a link to where I can get it?
Thanks
DT

I'm also using TTNavigator 7.198.9193, with the latest available v855 W&CE map and have no lag...
Start up with HD2 is 3-4sec, start-up with Blackstone is a bit slower (why should that be?? ), but still 6-7sec
I think it's due to your memorycard.
Maybe your using a slow (class 2) memory card.
But since you hadn't have those long boot time before, I think you just need to format your mem card
So.... back up everything you need, format it and put everything back And the lag should've been gone
