Hi
I cant get video`s to work on video google, they dont show up when the page loads, plus i hit the download button and theres no response, also when i go to play an internet flash game, the message comes up "PLEASE NOTE : To view this page properly, please enable Javascript and update your flash player.
Now as far as i know i have the latest flash player, so where do i enable javascript, didnt find it anywhere in IE options? I jsut assumed this sort of stuff would just work onm WM5..
Thanks
Sorry to disappoint you, but this kind of stuff - namely JavaScript - does not work even on WM5. It simply isn't there and to the best of my knowledge there is no way to add it.
So for now any site that uses JavaScript (I suspect you have the same problem with google videos) is off limits for PIE.
Right....
Bit of a bummer then ..
Any chance it`ll be dev`d in the future, seems like a bit of a gaping hole if you ask me
Many thanks..
i'd sugest looking into another browser then PIE
ms dont have much compatition left in their eyes
and they dident invent javascripts so they are not
likely to promote and support it unless they have to
any suggestions please?
I tried Minimo to no avail..
Thanks

somebody found America?
It's still *very* early stages. OK, so it renders better than anything else, but the rest of the interface is nasty. It's also hideously slow to respond on both 400Mhz XDA2 and 600Mhz iPaq. And the keyboard doesn't work in landscape mode. TBH a custom soft keyboard would be better.
Wait til 0.7 before you expect any sort of useable version (Current version is 0.013!)
There is a little-known browser called Thunderhawk which renders brilliantly to a 320x240 screen in landscape by scaling everything down. But it's a bit sluggish, and they seem to pass *all* traffic through their own server to perform preprocessing (and thus you need to pay a subscription.) I think Minimo has the potential to blow all of them out of the water if it can be faster than Opera and as impressive in its output as Thunderhawk.
Wait, WM5 only?
*tries it on his 2003SE device anyway*
If you're looking for a tabbed browser try ftxPBrowser. Same engine as PIE, so compatible with most sites. Also it uses the same favorites, cookies & cache. History seems not to be working though. & it's only 75K:!:
Regards, M
Many people don't like the IE rendering engine, or the IE way of rendering (e.g. Opera) which is why they seek alternatives.
Further, the reason it's "only 75k" is because it's not a browser. Whoever wrote it - and PIE - didn't actually write a browser themselves, they just instructed IE to render the page into the area they specified. The tabs just switch between visible IE areas. In short, if you uninstall IE then it won't work. It's like taking a Fiat Cinqecento and putting a Peugeot 407 body on it, then saying it's a whole new car which is very light but looks just as good as something else. If you take the Fiat out, it doesn't go any more.
(Coders out there - I know this is technically very loose, but I'm trying to put this simply for someone who doesn't understand the relevance of MiniMo)
Excuse me for being so dumb... I know what Minimo is about, tried it & opera (mini too) & thunderhawk as well.
Problem is though that PIE is still the most compatible:!:
I use firefox on my PC & probably will be using minimo when it's working properly. But at the moment minimo is almost useless from the user point of view.
Yes you got me P on this.
Minimo is also currently around 10Mb.... bit large methinks. (and bloody slow)
My take on this
Minimo is slow
Opera is fiddly and the download thing is a HUGE prob plus takes up too much space
PIE seems to work fine.
What exactly is up with PIE ? I mean on a desktop Mozilla rules but on a handheld ???
Huge problem with PIE for many people is that it's a M$ product. Personal I don't mind.
Serious problem is that it doesn't render, one column does help a little & there's the lack of tabs. For this last I use ftxPBrowser. Problem with that one is the lack of history & most important downloads are very problematic if not impossible.
Which make me use ftxPBrowser & Opera mini (no https :-( ) for browsing & PIE for downloads.
Now it's waiting for a good rendering, downloading & secured browser.
Cheers, M
Strange thing I know about people disloking MS progs, I know people do not like them, the thing is why are they using devices with MS op system on them when they could be using a Symbian unit.
It's a real problem, huh?
Palm and symbian have some really nice software to run on their devices, I'm especially a fan of the UIQ stuff that SE slaps on top of Symbian. The don't, however, seem to have quite got the knack of cobbling together really good hardware to run it all on.
Of course, the kids who make the really cool hardware seem content to slap Windows Mobile on there and be done with it.
So, in conclusion: come on HTC, go source a proper OS for your handhelds. Maybe have a word with Apple?
Back on-topic: it seems to run on WM2003SE, but not very nicely. It's all juddery and incomplete and frankly kind of rubbish. More evidence, if it was ever needed, that Magician-type devices are not meant for web browsing.
i use one of the beta versions on 2003
it's ok but slow
and it DONT SUPPORT COPY PASTE!!!
which is a biatch
ATEOTD no Firefox/Mozilla is worth using at such early test versions. It's worth keeping an eye on if you're that geeky - but Firefox (back when it was Phoenix then Firebird) wasn't really useable until version 0.7. Consider that minimo is at 0.07 or something - it has a long way to go before it's competing with IE/Opera. I won't put PIE in that list, because it's just not a browser. And Thunderhawk is simply incomparible in its function. I would like to see a browser which renders as well as Thunderhawk but more quickly and without needing to interface with a central server, though.
Minimo's greatest feature so far is that it does actually support JavaScript and AJAX systems like Google Maps, which no other browser can do. But to get the speed out of Thunderhawk, you would probably need to render to a static image. And that negates animated GIFs and any JavaScript that manipulates on-screen elements.
Hi All,
i'm trying to access the following site with my XDA Exec (HTC Universal):
http://www.sikhitothemax.com/new/Larree.asp?PageNo=1
ignore the fact that it is another language. as you'll notice, when you hover over the text, a broken up version of the sentence being hovered over appears towards the top of the window. when you hover over the arrows, the text will move up and down you can also enter a page number and jump foward. apart from going up and down pages, there is no clicking involved.
the problem is when i try to access this site on my XDA Exec, all i get are the two arrows and no text. i do get the page up and down buttons though which are active. i don't think it's a font issue because if it was i'm sure i'd get the text mangled-up but there nonetheless anyway...
as a shot in the dark, i installed Macromedia Flash Player (i think 6 0r 7) and this works fine with sites that use flash but no joy with the site concerned - so i guess it maynot be a flash problem...
any thoughts - i'd really appreciate them...
thanks.
jagroop singh - newbie!
I think the problem is that Pocket IE can't run the java script which comprises the entire page. There is no flash and no plain text on it (right click in regular IE then select view source).
Sorry, but I don't know any fix for that.
At least they are building a site version specifically designed for PDAs, when they are done you will probably be redirected there automatically once you access the site from your device.
thanks levenum.
i think they opriginally planned to make the site more pda-friendly but its been a few years now - i guess they gave up on the idea...
any more thoughts anyone?
use another and real browser
pocket IE is a joke
Has anyone EVER managed to make n0p’s free (!) Tower Toppler ( http://toppler.sourceforge.net/ ) port (available at http://n0p.tonych.info/?Tower_Toppler ) work on his / her WM device?
It wouldn't work on mine - it just displays "null" instead of the name of the map. Tested on several of my devices, with both the older XScale only and the new ARM (02.12.2006) build.
Alternatively, does anyone know n0p's accessibility? I'd need this info on my forthcoming article on all Nebulus clones for Windows Mobile.
Hmm, I wanted to check it out but when I tried downloading from http://n0p.tonych.info/?Tower_Toppler I got a "leach alert" page saying something about no referrals and turning off download accelerators.
Found this odd since I have no download managers installed.
Tried it with Firefox 2.0.0.3 and Explorer 6.0 and nothing...

Directly (left) click the links, do NOT do a right-click + Save link as.
No luck. Tried it directly with both browsers.
Even ran Spybot just in case.
Played with the desktop version for a bit - nice little game.
Interesting thing is I did not see an email address anywhere on the developers site (and I even checked the Russian version - yes I read Russian).
Oh well, it was just curiosity any way. I have about 20 games on my Jamin as it is and in order to get some respect I need to at least pretend to use it for work stuff
Good luck with your article.

Strange it didn't work. I can put it on my database back-end so that the entire world can access it there without problems tomorrow morning; I'll give you the URL as soon as it's up.
In the meantime, I was able to make the game work (see http://forum.xda-developers.com:80/showthread.php?t=304230 if interested). Guys, you MUST give this game a try - it REALLY rocks! n0p has again presented us something REALLY cool, thanks!
ANYWAY, if anyone does know n0p's accessibility, let me know. I, as the Windows Mobile Best Software Awards 2007 Nomination Manager, want to nominate some of his stuff for this year's awards and, for this, I also need to contact him.
See http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/TopplerARM.7z for the mirrored file
Thanks a lot for mirroring the file. (You relay shouldn't have bothered)
Keep the excellent articles coming.

I think that, after has proved two roms that there is in this moment, many of us have valuable contributions that made to help to perfect the final score. I have seen many very positive dispersed suggestions for the different threads that treat the topic.
I think that it is better to open a thread exclusively for suggestions and only suggestions (although they could accompany oneself of a comment) of progress, which is plain and practical for the consultation of the creators of roms.
Also I think that if some suggestion is debatable, we could debate on it and even to vote if we weigh that it must be included or not.
Clearly, they will take their own decisions according to what here they see and of their own perceptions; but it is sure that we serve them as help.
I begin with my own suggestions:
Only for that of Phil:
- To include the STK services to be able to use dual sim.
For both:
- To support most of free possible memory, by means of:
*To install only a source for defect and to be able to have others by means of cabs
*To include neither Windows Live nor the Office, not even Voice Command for defect. To add them in cabs.
- If someone manages to make to work this, to include in the rom (WLAN IP Manager) since it would solve the one that for me is the worst defect of Tornados: the inability to get connected with fixed IPs.
Thanks
PD: I have seen many different, as one on a driver for the joystick, someone on the starter, others on the multimedia player, etc., that also would like to see me implemented, but I hope that there should be the first ones in contributing them who posteen here, so they will be able to make it much better than I.
Excuse us, to me for my horrible English and to Google for his horrifying Spanish.
You are contradicting with yourself. You are saying that they must leave as much free memory as possible and then you are asking for a feature only a few of us will ever use.
I believe the roms must be left as clean as possible. A couple of things such as HTC tasks, file manager, comm manager etc. may be default. But other than that anything can be left out. This way we guarantee that everybody has his own OS style (like linux, unlike windows).
Right now I am using Phil's rom and it is quite stable and fast and I am very satisfied. There are some debug related applications in it which will probably be removed in the next release. And the rest, for me, just works like a charm.

Which? If you talk about STK services, to where I understand I believe that it is an own service of the phone that does not consume resources that only become “visible” when there are several options of to switch on. I do not believe that that is to request a new characteristic, but to correct an error. If you talk about WLAN IP Manager, the same. It does not do more than small adjustments in the registry to correct a tremendous error of the Tornado.
I do not see that it requests nothing else, but good, if some of the things comes aside in cab installable, because better.
It seemed to me very interesting something of a magnificent one to driver for joistick, but no longer I know nor by where it walks.
In order to themselves separate the possible discussions of the suggestions, I believe that it is going to be better to put in negrilla these last ones. In case the creators of roms want to review the thread of a look it will be more easy.
i did have a small list of improvements made some time ago:
ok phil.
if u remove windows update, at least supply it as a cab in the extras folder.
channels don't work.
long pressed side button does not work! it used to start voice note record for the sda and i'd like that to work.
mms.
better camera software. btw htc camera makes the phone SLOW..... not a good one. need an alternate
enable profile switching to silent when long pressing '#' key
default folder for saving pictures on storage card is not my documents\my pictures any more but a lame dcim folder. that would be nice to be changed.
also, sometimes when answering a call, the keyboard stays locked, the call is still on, but the home screen is active and not the call screen.
joystick seems much better but sometimes it doesn't want to work as it should. maybe another driver; if not, this one is good
we need wpa2 for wifi enabled.
also add in the extras folder:
moblue
tcpmp with extra codecs
htc audio manager could be good
if u need the cabs for moblue and htc audio, i have them
there is an newer version of sim manager. v6.10. has a couple of new things (got it if u need it)
and maybe add a good version of opera. not the java one.
we also need a good midlet manager
also a good instant messaging program. maybe a multi client one like oz mobile im, or like im+

Very worked, correct an useful list. I am in agreement with almost everything.
I believe everybody wants is a small, fast and clean ROM, with the latest and more reliable drivers.
Imho, any application that is not mandatory, OR if could be installed in SD should be packed together with the ROM in a ZIP file, so everyone could choose which extra features to install.
Since the extra features installation take some (lot of) time reset or first installation. - It would be Great if someone could manage to create a package installer, where the user may choose what "extras" to install.

Excellent idea. Save lots of time. (Excuse me for I put it in "bold")
Headset profile is missing
I would also add Autokeylock and Right Menu in ROM. They seem to me two essential littel applications.
right menu is not free.
i don't think it's a good idea to include all those 3d party, just the esential stuff (as mms, camera, etc).

Ohhh. It's correct. Excuse me. I thought that it was free. It's mine for a long time.
I agree totally in the rest, but… for me Autokeylock isa essential stuff.
Just give us a basic version, do not include things which can be installed in storage card to maximize the available space
Well said, I agree.
oh yeah... i did forget one bug for my list:
the wm6 t9 does not work right. it seems it has been borrowed from a chinese rom or something because when you switch between typing modes with the * key, it displays some chineese characters.
To break the Modaco xT9 language pack so only the necessary language can be installed .
Very important. About 2.5 Mg will be saved. I know It by experience

Ditto. Good idea!
I would be very happy this xmas if I can find an application like I describe below.
My request is simple, so simple I cannot find it anywhere! I've searched and searched and wasted hours online trying to find it to no avail.
I would like to find a file explorer application with an interface like the Search Today plugin that will search locally in the main memory and sd card but not only web pages; an application like the type-to-search function found in Initiate for Palm devices.
It can be either a plugin or a button-assignable application (even better!).
I want to be able to start typing a word in the Today screen (or anywhere else by pressing a button) and the application will look through EVERYTHING in the phone and show all the instances of that word/phase narrowing it down as I type, and once I find what I am after and click on it, if it is an application it will open it, if it is a file it will open an application by file association, if it is a phone number it will open the phone application, if it is a video file it will play it, and so on.
I'm not after skins or pretty intefaces that flip and turn or anything of the sort, I don't need any of that because I want to use my phone efficiently, because for me it is a tool not a show-off thingy to beat the iPhone. I want an efficient, plain and simple "search and you shall find" kind of application, with a small footprint, preferably.
Cubes are very nice to look at and some people spent heaps of time honing their skills in developing it but at times they bore me, sorry.
Is there anything available that will do what I need? Please?
I'm searching for the same thing! I know one but its exclusive to sierra voq smartphone: it's called myvoq
I sort of knew that it was not going to be easy to find but I am still hopeful that the great brains out there would have come up with something.

Thank you but I think even if you managed to dump your ROM or copy the dll it probably would not have worked because I think the phone is a smartphone, i.e., no touch screen, am I right? I believe software made for smartphones cannot be made to work on touchscreen-phones.
But thanks for trying.

I discovered the correct terminology for what I am after: "Predictive on-device Search" - see article here. But still no concrete results.
