Finding/identifying the latest ROM upgrade - the explanation - General Topics

Having problems finding/identifying the latest ROM upgrade for your HTC Phone Edition device? Here’s the solution and full explanation!
It has always been rather complicated to find HTC ROM’s, especially if you live in a “peripheric” country (for example, Eastern Europe) where official IMEI numbers are not necessarily accepted. (This is the case with, for example, Qtek and some Eastern European countries – even if you buy an absolutely legal Qtek device from Qtek’s resellers, you won’t necessarily be able to use its services to, say, access the ROM upgrade download section).
Fortunately, the Dutch (it also has an English section, so, don’t be afraid of the language) HTC-related Pocket PC Web site, HTC Club collected all the links to all the currently available latest HTC device upgrades HERE.
I’ve thoroughly scrutinized their list and was, in general, pleased. All the download links are valid and the links indeed point to the latest available ROM upgrade versions. Make sure, however, that you compare the version numbers (more on their identification in the next section) in the “ROM Update” and the “Country specific ROM Update ” column (if the latter has a WWE version) because, in some cases, the latter may have a never version than the former, as is the case with the Qtek 9100 ROM.
Identifying the version number of a given ROM upgrade installer EXE file
How can I decide the correct version of a HTC ROM upgrade? - you may ask probably the most frequently asked question. It’s not that complicated.

New PhoneDaily article on forthcoming WM5 AKU3 upgrade

Now that Microsoft has, finally, officially released the forthcoming, by Windows Mobile 5 users, highly anticipated AKU3 (please read this article on what different AKU's are different in) for device manufacturers and rebranders, a lot of new articles have been published on it.
The latest one worth checking out is that of Hong Kong-based website Phone Daily. The original article is here, the English "translation" of it here. (Note that BabelFish wasn't able to translate the original page; this is why I had to edit the original page and remove the implicit REFRESH tag to avoid BabelFish promptly switching to the main (Chinese) homepage of the site. The modified and, now, BabelFish-compliant page is here. Remembering this trick can be pretty useful when you plan to translate any page from Phone Daily - or, for that matter, any web site that is incompatible with BabelFish because of the quiuck redirection.)
Hope AKU3-based ROM upgrades quickly make to current WM5 devices. Note that the unofficial AKU3-based ROM's already released by the XDA-Dev folks for the HTC Universal, Wizard and the MDA III all lack functionality like Bluetooth FTP and Ajax compliance and, therefore, I do not really recommend them. Don't expect them to support the entire set of new AKU3 features.
I wonder if imate will be releasing this for the JasJar. They haven't since 2.0
Excuse me,where can I download AKU3 for dopod 586w(i-mate sp5)

Is this WM6 from microsoft for all devices

Dear all
In internet site I found link for WM6 from microsoft (as they claim). Is this can be for all devices?
Attched the link for the file

micosoft site

Absolutely not!!!
Every WM OS must be customized by the manufacturer for every device they sell. There certainly cannot be one MS WM6 ROM upgrade that suits multiple devices, let alone all devices...
Any idea who posted this ROM you've provided the link for and how you got the link? That might tell us which device it's for without having to waste time downloading it, if it's not a hoax in the first place.

After download it appears to be a universal wm6 update.

I do not understand any thing from it
I downloaded the file and the nk.nbf file size 66MB

There is no such thing as rom for all devices, the roms still are device dependant, the only theoretical (I think they are trying this in MS labs) way for creating all device upgrade is to be something like kitchen, with drivers and support software for all devices (which is a little hard but MS has the power and the money to do it) the rom will cook befor actual flashing and then it will flash to the device.
I think the confusion here is cause by the word 'Universal' (note the capital U).
Many people don't realize that this does not mean 'ROM for all' as the term universal does.
This is simply a reference to an internal name given by HTC to the device known as the Exec / JasJar and many other names.
As for creating a truly universal ROM: it is M$ fault that the image has to be bundled with the drivers in the first place. I think this is intentional to make ripping off the OS harder. If they wanted to, they could design the hardware specific component to be separate, even sit in a different partition of ROM so minor OS updates like WM 6 that do not require change in driver architecture could be generic.

HTC Home

Hi,
This is my first post here. Please excuse me if I post in the wrong section, or if this is already asked.
I am borrowing a brand new HTC TyTN II, and I see this have a nice new Today screen with a big digital clock, a link to favourite persons, etc.
I think this might be called HTC Home, because it dissapears if I uncheck this in the Today Items list.
Question is:
- Is this an application that can be downloaded somewhere and installed on othe HTC devices?
- Will this only work on WM6 devices, or also on my old HTC P3600 WM5 device?
- If this is not possible to download, but embedded in the ROM, is there any easy way to "extract" this from the device I borrow? (could this be a CAB file that is in some hidden area on the phone)
Could someone please help me with these questions, or refer me to some links where this have already been discussed

Thanks for your answer.
I have downloaded and tested that several "Helmi" versions works OK on both my semidefekt (no sound/camera due to the fact that I have ripped those out to use on another phone) I-mate Jamin (with QTEK ROM) and my HTC P3600.
Both the 3 tab and 6 tab versions worked. For my P3600 all features seemed to work. Great!
Only some more questions about this:
a) The link you gave me contained a lot of pages, and a lot of sub links to other posts and versions. In fact it seems that there is very many versions of this plugin lying around on your and other similar sites.
It would be very nice if this tool could be added in the CAB archives page with a new clean post that lists what is the newest and most current version, and what version is for what phone, as it is quite difficult to follow all these pages lying around in the forum (which also is the reason why I reply in this post rather than in one of the many other existing ones).
Would this be something you eminent persons would consider?
b) I tried both the Helmi 3/6 tab versions and the Kaiser 5 tab versions. None of the Kaiser versions worked on my Imate JAmin/P3600, but I assume this is because the Kaiser versions obviously is intended for a different type of phone (or maybe it is WM6 they are intended for?)
Is this true?
c) If not, do these versions have any features that the Helmi versions don't have?
d) I tried these versions of the "Helmi" editions:
- HtcHome6_WM5_comp_sdkcert.cab (with the extra SDK_CERT.cab),
- HTCHomeWM56Tab.cab
- HtcHome6_WM5_comp.cab
They all had slightly different file sizes, and contained a bit different number of files/reg keys. So my question is: What is the newest and most stable version? (which version should I use?)
e) Are there other versions than these that are newer/better for the above mentioned phones?
As you see, I got a bit confused about all these pages. I got it working, so that is great, but if someone would bother to clarify these issues, and maybe even make a sticky post or add it to the CAB vaults, that would be even more great!

Absolute beginner but have read guides :-)

I received from a friend a MDA Vario, german T-Mobile. I searched the web and found guides on this forum. What I think to have understood:
1) my device runs wm5, is G3 and cid locked
2) I have to downgrade to 1.xx and then cid unlock
...and start flashing... but what? Can I flash all kinda ROMs or only germans (german is not a pronlem)? And where can I find them (I've seen wm6 resources posts but don't know differences of versions)?
There are thousends of posts, what I need to download to have the most uptodate and reliable MDA Vario in Italy (tools for cid unlock apart),
Read it as: ROM for newbie
German versions prefered.
Thanks in advance
mm
You can flash any G3 compatible ROM you want, and most are compatible.
Finding the language you want might not be so easy.
There were my doubts, so I can flash any kind of rom, regardless of original language! Moreover, I was looking for a wm6 rom that also includes patches to improve general performance (camera, video, speed, radio etc) and also includes those "musts" like registry editor, tcmp player, mort player etc or similar that every pda user has. There are so many self cooked around, it's a jungle , maybe someone who tried a few can give me a tip
Check out the rom ratings post. Also, one you might be interested in read the entire post. Then you can see issues others may be having.

Some info for those who own the hTY Q5.

Sorry for your luck if you are thinking of flashing an ELF ROM, the mainboards are similar in shape but the components are different. But you can use the Elf batteries. At least you have a source for batteries.
There are new hTY Q5 WM6.5 ROMS on the Chinese forums but most do not have the english keyboard. I could not register at any of these sites, the security Captacha wouldn't pass for some reason. Google's translations are lame when it comes to the Chinese language. If someone can actually manage to snag one of those ROMs please post it here for testing. Appearently it's pretty much straight forward. Put the ROM .img file in the root of your T-Flash card, hold the center select button and then push the power button and the phone will update the ROM. (***Caution***) Before flashing you need to know which LCD your phone has. The older models have the ILI LCD and the newer models have the LG LCD. On the phone keypad dial **168## this will bring up the HCIT Test Program where you can get the ROM version your phone has. It will look similar to this Q5_LEN_WM6.1_V3.00_091216_LG28_OV2_HY76_HTF_ND_BT_WF_G
(ILIxx)
If those of use who own these phone band together and do our research, we should be able to give new life to our hTY phones. We need our own section in this forum.
Still searching.
HTY Q5
have you on the HTY Phone the elf Rom running?
I Have tnhe same Mobile...

Does anyone have a Firmware update for Hantel HTY Q5 Windows 6.1?
Updated info at top post.
English rom's
I am also looking for English WM6.1 or WM6.5 for HTY Q5. I have several Chinese WM6.5 versions. I will keep looking and let you know. Concerning Google Translate, try opening the original Chinese version and translated version and use the translated one as a guide but enter everything through the original page. I was able to register with Chinese forums this way and then use Live translate or Google to login and download. You also need to download a special program called raysource to download most of them.
I also have T4242 English WM6.5 and will try and post later today.
jaygreene24, thanks for the info about registering on the Chinese forums. Is there a way to replace the Chinese keyboard with the english after flash. I want WM6.5 but not if I cannot use the phone afterward because everything is in Chinese. I would prefer an OEM flash, cause most cooked ROMs have lots of bugs.
