Battery Life Post AKU2 - HTC Tornado

All,
I have noticed a significant decrease in overall battery life since upgrading my C2125 to SP5m ROM with AKU2. I'm assuming this is due to push email. I remember reading a very good, in depth, article about tweaking the exchange server settings to make the best use of radio/proc time. I just can't seem to find that article. I am in the unique situation of managing the Exchange server, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Anyone seeing the same?
I did find a Microsoft KB Article that contains the possible reg entries that can be tweaked, I just don't know which ones will have the desired affect on easing battery consumption on my device. Any help either finding that article, or with the settings on the server side would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I have DirectPush working 24x7 on my i-Mate SP5 whilst not totally flawless, it's 95%+ there. But I have great battery life, at least enough or a whole second day if I forget to charge, so I suspect your power drain is coming from another reason, most likely the screen backlight. i-Mate have a power management update on their website that enhances the options. Hope this helps. br/

No problems here. Have Push Email running 24x7 too without any noticible change in battery life. Still do 4 days or more without charging with regular use.

Bosseye:
Do you know what that power management enhancement does?
I have a T-Mobile SDA, and am looking to extend the standby time. Is there any chance you have a link or a copy of the file, I could get?
It would be really appreciated.

think I may have figured it out. I am on some fairly heavyweight mailing list, but have all that email going to a folder I am not syncing. It seems my device could be trying to sync even when there is nothing new in the folders I do sync. Anyone else see this type of activity?
**EDIT**
After some testing, I no longer think this is the case... Sorry

The file is named: CDL_Power_Management.cab but I don't have from i_mate's site a description of what it does. Visibibly it adds an app that provides more complete control of the screen timeout, backlight timeout, keypad timeout etc. The file can be found here:
http://www.clubimate.com/t-device_sp5_utilities.aspx
I'm not sure how device specific this may be as I don't know your specific variant of the hardware.
Out of interest, you don't have Pocket Internet Explorer running in memory do you, as I've seen similar posts that say this chatters away and drains the battery. No concrete facts to back that up thought, I just remember discussion on it months back in the BlueAngel forum (I think).
Hope this helps.

I would also like to know this
I've been using my Tornado for some time now and to be honest, it is as slow as a wet week.
The screen resolution is fantastic, but in typical Microsoft fashion, they put a higher priority on the bells & whistles over the performance of the OS.

What model do you have? I am fairly happen with my SP5.
I have an SP5.
I've also got a KJAM and JASJAR.
I think the new WM2005 OS is extremely slow to respond compared with 2003SE devices.
it's a pretty device, just not very quick.
I do, however, like the WiFi capability on my SP5.

Persistent storage
Another area where Windows Mobile lagged behind the Palm OS was in the realm of persistent storage. Historically, when the battery on a Windows Mobile-based device drained completely, user data was lost. To counter this, Windows Mobile-based devices sometimes allocated up to 30 percent of battery power just to save data. Now that Windows Mobile 5.0 has built-in support for persistent storage--so that when the battery drains completely, your data remains intact you can expect longer battery life, as the device won't have to allocate any power to maintain the information stored on it.
Why Persistent Storage Is A Good Thing
Here's a quick primer on why you want Persistent Storage on your Pocket PCs.
Persistent Storage (PS) on PocketPC is new for Windows Mobile 5.0
Previously, your user data (email, contacts, calendar, settings, apps you installed, etc) were stored in RAM. RAM has the advantage of being really fast, but the significant disadvantage of needing a constant source of power for it to hold its data. Leave your device unplugged for long enough, and you'll lose all your data. Fixing that was the primary reason for moving PocketPCs to Persistent Storage.
Persistent Storage gives you a nice sense of certainty about your data. Batteries running low? No problem. Worst case, the device shuts off and you can't use it again until you get to a power supply. But when you get there, it'll boot back up and all your data will still be there.
But Persistent Storage has a number of other effects that might not be quite so obvious. Would you believe that moving to Persistent Storage can double your battery life and enable devices with significantly more storage than were previously possible?
Downsides? Yes, nothing is free. Flash is much slower than RAM. Reading and writing large amounts of data will take longer on a Persistent Storage device than it did on a RAM device (Qtek 9090; 2020; S100). That initial sync that pulls down 400 contacts and 5000 emails will take longer. Some write operations will seem a bit more sluggish. But I believe you'll find that the upsides significantly outweigh the downsides.
You'd better get a copy of SPB PocketPC tips&tricks, no reg hacking & more tweaks.
bruxelles5:
I aree that persistant storage is a good thing. The fact that once a device ran out of power, it wiped it's storage has plagued my engineering team for a long time.
This is indeed a great advancement.
I just wish these things were a little faster.
I guess it is a matter of weighing up the good and the bad, and taking the bad with the good.
so no one answered the question... does this tweak work for tornado?
if yes, what exactly do i use to edit my registry?
thanks

Gigabyte gsmart i300 running WM6 eng

yup Windows Mobile 6 pro is running on the i300 the (free upgrade from gigabyte)
http://www.gigabytecm.com/Turkey/WM6/
http://www.gigabytecm.com/turkey/WM6/download/GSmarti300_V2.02.04_ENG-Turkey.zip
so far so good
Working good the update?
No problems at al?
one thing i noticed of the bat was MS active sync program is slow.... i guess they have to fix it up, when its doing the sync its taking a lot longer, and if it doesnt work with outlook, i found the fix and this was for wm5 and wm6 is that in outlook if you download all your mail and then hit the sync button, in outlook it will then work with active sync, its a known issue i think with some older outlook ver :/
but ya right now with wm6 it lags a bit in the connection activation, i think as far as the speed its the same speed as before, its just annoying, i might try the active sync beta that is out
the os seems more responsive, i have yet to test the gps and wifi or IE
I can get working GPS
SiRFDemoPPC.zip dl that from the manu run it until u get signal if not, in settup switch to binary mode and do a col reset or reset manu settings then switch back to nmea, it can take a while, play around with it, i know that if i can get a lock with that program then i can get lock with others after i exit this one
oh the device on i300 is GSW3
Hi, just a few questions.....is the I300 as a phone any good?....is the call quality on both ends clear etc?.....and also the back speaker, is it loud?.....i am looking at getting this phone but i would like to know the above first if anyone can answer these questions for me......also does anyone know the correct gps settings to get tomtom 6 to work?.......thanks in advance!!!
Cheers
irv777
as far as quality i think its same as any other phone quality... no diff from my other phone, (moto v300) the speaker is a loud speaker ya you can play games or mp3s etc... and its loud enough IMO, but there is only so much volume and quality of something of that size, regardless of phone IMO unless a phone has stereo, but this and most phones is mono 1 speaker, the headset is stereo and BT can be stereo too
Thanks for the reply, what about tomtom 6?.....does it work with this phone and what are the ps settings to get a proper fix?.......thanks again in advance.
i havent tried tomtom6 but some ppl have i believe on this device, IMO should work just fine
http://www.gsmarena.com/gigabyte_g_smart_i300-1817.php
yeah i was just reading some reviews on it from the gsmarena website.....how are you finding the battery life though?......is battery life better with WM6 or WM5, any differences?....thanks
well i really want the 1300mah battery, but i havent been able to see one, maybe they will release one later, or some other third party will
wm6 i think might give better battery life but mostly on idle or low activity, if you run anything intensive then i dont think there is anything that will save your battery hehe the charging seems faster or it could be just me
and for the rest i think you have to get some nice tweaking util to really optimize any PPC, i for one havent bothered much... everything is installed on my miniSD card
i think since its a free upgrade its quite worth it, all the small changes to all the apps is big
i cant really say a whole lot for wm5 vs wm6 becaues i havent been using either one long enough, some other vets could have a diff opinion im sure
i think its sad that any PPC if you use anything like Wifi, GPS or if you had a TV it kills the battery life very quick... same for if you try to run something that takes up all the resources (cpu) it does about the same... i was playing the sega emu and it did drain battery life but not as bad as wifi, gps does, mp3 playback takes even less cpu, as far as movies i dont know but i think it would be a little more then mp3 depending what its encoded i think
but for movies i can use my cowon D2 PMP
btw my i300 came with 2x 900mah batteries i dont know about others but most ppl said so, those that they got from ebay
could anyone export the i300WM6 registry and post it here, please?
GPS icon in settings > connections
I have enabled GPS icon in settings > connections. Programs now can not use built in GPS. Could you please post the registry keys and values in the following location:
HKLM\Control Panel\Gps Settings\
Thanks.
How do I get the voicemail indicator to work on my Gigabyte i300? I am using ATT and it doesn't ever tell me about new voicemails nor waiting voicemails.

Sorry balikci, just saw your post today.
I did not upgrade my i300 (so, English WM5 firmware so far).
There is not such an entry (HKLM\Control panel\GPS Settings\) in my registry file!
GPS is not working with Wm6 firmware version?
GPS works perfectly fine in wm6, also the think outside ultra slim BT keyboard does work with this device you need 4.52 driver i think and disable the standard devices hid driver or so... its a check box when you run it for the first time, and then it works just right
I300 seems to have over exposure issue with the camera in wm5 and wm6, in very bright sunny area, after the first picture all pics are over exposed, if you close the app and start the first picture works perfectly but others that fallow do not... it must be a driver/software issue
could somebody help me with taking device into bootloader mode? i want to upgrade to WM6
in it's official website , it says you need to push Send End and power key , while the device is off.
first , what is send and end keys? green and red ones?
second , which one is power key? the suspend key or the soft reset hole key?
third , what does it mean by turning device off ? suspend it or turn it off completely , if so how?
and , is this ROM
http://www.gigabytecm.com/Eng/gbc_supportdetail.aspx?sid=26
WWE , i heard there are certain parts non english , which is okey , but if you know of any full WWE link , please let me know
cheers
king_dani, Send (green) is what you use to aswer a call, End (red) is what you press to end a call. Power key's the suspend key. Turning device off means turning it off compleatly, just hold the power key to turn the device off. The rom you gave the link to is WWE.

thnx alot man , so at least i know i'm pushing the right keys. well i tried these combination , in completely shut down device , still, it turns on and won't go into bootloader mode , for some yet unknown reason. plus , do you know if i should empty the whole card ? or can i use a partially loaded miniSD card? i mean , would it work if there are other files on it , and also , should they files be on root folder?
cheers
try another combination: turn the device on, hold Send and End keys, do a soft reset (don't release send and end buttons!), wait for Image Utility. All files from a downloaded archive should be placed in a root folder (/Storage card). It's Ok if there're files on a card.

Blackberry Connect Optimized Roms

I am having a problem coming up with what roms have the Dual Data Connections enabled inside. This tweak allows for both BB Connect to be connected along with another data session (ie. MediaNet.) Some Cooks put it in thier thread that they are enabled for it yet most do not.
Can we continue this thread as a who supports it and who doesn't thread? I feel this will be much easier then flashing the rom, launching BB Connect and seeing if it will take it or not.
I know it has been said that kaisertweak and Advanced Config can enable max data sessions to "8" to get it but will not stick unless cooked in. Has this changed, or do we still need to have it cooked in?
Last part to this long set of questions... What memory allocation does BB Connect pull out of? I run Quick menu with available memory running in my top bar and find it odd that whether BB Connect is enabled or disabled the available running memory does not fluctuate. Does this mean it is running out of page pool memory? This leads me to ask what is the best page pool BB Connect users have found for performance and this program running?
Thank you all for contributing!
ROMS I have found to work
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dutty's 04/29 Hybrid (all variants) - also confirmed by TwinPeaks
Alex's 6.1V2CUBE
[May 25] L26_Kaiser_Diamond_Version_2 - confirmed by Laurentius26
Per GSLeon3 in his Multiple Data Sessions Hack post states these work also
1. Sleuth v1.2 WM6.0
2. Sleuth v3.0 WM6.1
3. Dutty Hybrid WM6.1[April 1]
4. Dutty Hybrid WM6.1 [April 9]
5. akadonny's DK rom 3.14
Dutty's 04/29 ROM definitely allows for both, though the device wakes up (full screen on) when receiving an email. Not sure if this is a ROM issue or what.

I think it is anything that is associated with any of the test At&t builds. They all seem to display the ghost wake up on recieving any information, whether from my rss hub/weather panel/xpress mail/bb connect.
Thanks for the response on the compatible rom!

This also explains why my battery life doesn't come close to what others experience. As a System Admin I get piles of emails....my screen wakes up constantly

i am with you on that all the way. I think i send and recieve 100 emails a day and with rss updating once an hour and weatherpanel every 30 minutes it kills my battery. Yet i am more then willing to give up battery life for having what i want when i want it
I also would go as far as just having the dual data connections active has to be draining the battery faster in itself --- anyone have a confirmation on this, and maybe a reasoning on why not all cooks put this hack into thier roms?

tell me MS WP7 is NOT User Friendly!!!

I updated to 7720 and machine becomes even slower.
Here is a list of problems that I have (not only in 7720 version, some of them exist in official OS too)
1. Two alarms set at the same time will halt the system. The only solution is re-starting the machine.
2. Can NOT "answer" call when system is in sleep mode. No re-start needed but clicking the power button to light the screen first.
3. Noise in the alert during a new email comes in.
4. System acts very slowly in some xbox-live games. (Ex. PES 2011, it looks like need more memory)
5. Machine always shown a new voice mail in my mailbox, even my voice box is empty. I have not find any solution for this yet.
My question is, does MS take care of WP7 seriously?
1. Do we need the battery percentage number?
Yes, we do. Click setting --> battery --> scroll down to the end to see the little precious number.
2. Do we need to turn on/off wiki, 3G data?
Yes, we do. Setting --> wifi--> on/off and setting --> data -> on/off
I did NOT understand how MS claims this is a productivity lift as using a WP7 phone.
Educated me please.
my answer is ...................... go jump off a roof to solve all your problems by "machine" i suppose you he mean the MOBILE PHONE.. but why machine..? it's not like it is a car or something.. nevermind.. about your problem... if you really have updated to build 7220 (which actually is not a OFFICIAL or any LEAKED build) then the problem you're facing will be because of that build.. however.. if your build number is a typo, then your build should be 7720 and i would suggest you to reinstall the software and see if there's any improvment.. i havent updated to 7720 i'm still on 7712 but everything is working like a charm.. and the answer to your last question.. YES!! Microsoft is REALLY taking care of the windows phone development.. the only problem is they follow Apple's footsteps.. making your phone better with bitesizes
Troll...... Listen up.
1st This is the wrong section to be posting in.
2nd Im willing to bet the problems that your having are more of user error issues that anything else.
If you dont like WP7, sell your phone and get a new one with a differnt OS. Problem sloved.
I am not native English speaker. So the machine in my dictionary means mobile phone.
my problem is not only in 7720 build. I hope i can say it works like a charm.
unfortunately it does not.
anyway, thank you for your inputs.

This is a development thread, you should be posting in the general or questions section. I know english is your second languge, but I do think you should be able to read well enough to figure that out. And if you have a terrible life change it up, dont just sit there complaining. So the same goes for your phone, if you dont like your OS change to a different one.

my focus on 7720 exhibits NONE of those issues. i would say it's either your phone specifically, your sofware (reload it) or you.
msft has been the most proactive in listening to their consumer base compared to any of the other mobile OS providers.
I can't speak about the games but I don't have any of the other problems with my WP7 build 7712.
The last one is an issue with either your carrier or your SIM.

A lot of the promise of WP7 is to eliminate the need for some of the obsessive low-level tweaking and constant tinkering needed to get the most from a mobile phone.
In other words, why do you actually want to constantly be turning off wi-fi and 3G data? Probably because other phones and previous experience tells you that you have to do those things in order to prolong your battery life. Same with battery meters.
With WP7 I no longer feel the need to know the exact percentage of battery remaining. The user experience is optimized to focus on productivity and not on obsessive details. I am very happy to have tiles with my loved ones, apps I use a lot, facebook updates, and inboxes on my home screen instead of having to clutter it up with gauges and switches.
If you really can't live without those things, I suggest Android. Again I'll say that they're only necessary to overcome traditional shortcomings of other mobile platforms.
The first is indeed a big problem, android has a good deal.Hope to solve the problem ms

[brainstorm] ~5x faster battery drain with poor signal strength (SG2)

Ok. My first post, so hello everyone, I'm the new noob on this forum If you don't know what I'm talking about - see the damn movie, noob
To the gist:
1) I noticed a couple of similar topics on phone-specific forums, went through them (unbelievable how much flaming and bs is there on this forum, by the way), but it seemed like most of them were purely guessing as to what may be the cause of drainage. If I missed something I'll be grateful for links
2) I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S2, but I post it here since I noticed other phones with Android (including those with new Gingerbread) have the same issue - the battery is being drained enormously when the phone signal is poor, so I think it might be an OS issue rather than a particular device
I had SGS2 for almost 2 month now and only today did I notice a huge drop in battery life. From 5 to 6 days (this is not the thread for battery life tips. Send me a PM if you want to know how and what I did to get it last so long or I can post another topic on the SGS2 forum and explain everything I've done to my phone, just don't spam this thread) to around 1 day (it's been 22,5 hours and the battery level is 27%)
The only thing that changed is my phone signal - I live in the centre of a town so usually the signal strength is good, but I had a really windy weather and I guess something got destroyed, as I had to try around 5 times even to send a text message. Anyways, this is where the guessing part comes in - with usually 5, 6 days on a battery I can pretty much rule out everything else than phone signal since I don't use anything else (hubs social, music, etc. uninstalled, voice search and voice command uninstalled, StreetView uninstalled, etc. All via TitaniumBackup)
Spec (not sure what might me useful, posted what think may be the basics):
- Android 2.3.5
- Baseband: I9100XXKI4
- Kernel: [email protected] #20
- VillainRom 3.0
- Free version of LauncherPro
- I have wifi, gps, bluetooth off, I turn them on only when I need them; same with data network mode, but I hardly ever use it and I didn't turn it on today anyway
- no fancy widgets, no fancy processes in the background
- I used my phone as I usually do - some calls, messages, some music, bit of market and web browsing on wifi
The question is not about battery life itself or battery saving tips but about how the Android system handles signal searching and what does it do when the signal is weak. I assume similar battery drainage would occur in every-day situations, f.e. while using the tube, tunnels or living in some mobile-network ****-hole
Any ideas on a specific cause? Any on how it may be improved? I'm not thinking about software-side, like turning on "Flight mode" or some apps (though I'll be grateful for any ideas). I mean more of an OS solution, maybe something will help to improve Android further
My first post and end
