Back-up Rom problem - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hi,
I followed the howto for backing up the rom,but when I start romupdate I only have COM2 and no USB in the window that opens.
What can I do??

Did you uncheck USB in the Act.Sync connections settings?
Cheers, M

That was the problem, but:
I now only see com2 and another(a lot of letters) I choose for the second one.
Everything is like the "howto" says.
But when I do :ntrw Backup.nb1 h I got an error:The file does not exist!!!!

Hmm I always do this
- get ntrw.exe from the ftp
- get romupdate http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7510- get a SD-card > 64MB
- make backup of everything you want to keep from your magician & SD-card. everything will be wiped:!::!:
- fully charge your magician
- uncheck usb connection in Act.sync on your PC
- put your magician in Bootloader (camera & power & soft-reset at the same time for a few seconds) wait till screen fades & reads 'serial v1.0x'. Screen is very dark since backlight is of.
- connect usb, now the screen reads 'usb v1.0x'
- start romupgrade on your pc
- pick the magician connection in the listbox, wces something I belief
- now a screen pops up
- type d2s in this screen
- follow progress on pc & magician
- wait till checksum finishes
- get SD from the magician & put it into a cardreader. DON'T FORMAT:!::!:
- put ntrw in C:\
- start a command window
- type on commandline: ntrw read myrom.nb1 [sd driveletter]:
- follow progress
- error at the end is normal
- finished
- reset your device & restore backup
- Playtime
if it still doesn't work I'll upload my NTRW version

I gonna try that later,thnx for helping.
I'm now backing my SPV M500 but that is taking a very long time(and he's almost empty)
Is this normal?

The actual image of your rom on the SD is 64MB, the size on your harddisk is the equivalent of the SD size. You can shrink this last file with a hex-editor, cut it around 64MB. There's a specific pattern there which marks the end of the rom, just do a text-search for HTCE (in capitals & second hit should be it), ending address is around 03fc01a0.
Cheers, M

after 15 min backup,I only have 80 %
I'm waiting,but it takes very long
strange
damn,backup failed

Either your SD is extremely slow or ... I don't know. Usually it doesn't take that much time as far as I remember. But if there's still progression I'd leave it alone.

How To Guide for Firware Update on the SDA

After searching all over the net for a guide and reading a ton of forums I decided to write this guide.
First Off:
I AM NOT RESPONISBLE FOR YOUR MISTAKES, BAD FILES or ANY OTHER PROBLEMS THAT ARRISE FROM THIS GUIDE!!!
1. Read this before doing anything!
2. If you can see the 3 Color bars on the screen and USB in the bottom left then you can reflash the device. This is the boot loader screen for the SDA. To get to this (while the phone is off) you have to hold down the camera button, then hold down the power button until the screen goes white. Then let go of the buttons. It does not matter if the USB is plugged in yet or not.
3. I have only seen Radio updates load on aftermarket firmware. Meaning not HTC or T-Mobile firmware. You should load the radio update last. If you try to load it on a factory firmware your phone will not boot as it is not a certified app, or at least thats what i belive the problem to be. I havent heard of any one making it work.
4. Copy down all the settings from your proxy, connections and mms settings. To get to the MMS go to the messages, MMS, then MENU, then OPTIONS, ACCOUNT OPTIONS, MMS. Copy those and then hit MENU and MMSC Settings also.
Step One: Get the files...
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com U: xda or xdaupload P: xda
ActiveSync 4.2
RegEditSTG.cab or regedit.exe
SPV-Services
Newest Firmware as of 8/29/06 - Dopod_586W_Romcode_AKU2_Update.exe
Newest Radio as of 8/29/06 - Tornado_Radio_4[1].1.13.19_02.37.01
Connect SDA to PC
------------------
1. First Install ActiveSync and then reboot the PC.
2. Now backup all of your files and contacts from the SDA.
Backup Key Files
----------------
3. Inside ActiveSync there is an 'Explore' button. Press this and goto the \Windows Folder.
4. Copy all the files that start with Short_XXX and Long_XXX to your desktop. These assign diffrent tasks to the buttons on the SDA. They are read only so you must uncheck the read only box on the file to edit them. To edit these you have to open notepad.exe and drag over the file. Later we will copy these back.
App Unlock Phone
----------------
5. Copy over the regedit.exe or the RegEditSTG.cab and run them from the SDA.
6. Go to HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies and press the Values key.
7. Now edit the '00001001' and set it's Value Data to 1. (Default is 2 on mine)
8. Now edit the '00001005' and set it's Value Data to 40. (Default is 16 on mine)
9. Copy over the Cert.cab file from the SPV-Services folder to the SDA and run it from the File Manager. Say yes and it should say successfull. If not you will have to research the problem as the phone must be App Unlocked to finish this guide.
Unlock Phone and set SuperCID
-----------------------------
10. In the SPV-Services folder, run the SPVServices.exe. It should say ALL OK in big letters and RAPI Init was successfull. If not please reasearch the problem as the phone must be unlocked and have SuperCID '11111111' Set to work.
11. Click the SIMLock Tool on the left. Type in AGREE and hit Login.
12. If the button says UnLock then press it. Otherwise don't.
13. Now click the CID Tool button on the left.
14. You should now have a button that says 'Set CID = 11111111'. Press this button.
15. Close the app.
Load The Firmware
-----------------
16. Now close any open apps but this screen and run the 'Dopod_586W_Romcode_AKU2_Update.exe' or whaterver firmware you are using.
17. Check all the boxes and say update if you are sure you want to update.
18. If you use the firmware I have listed it will default to Chinese but it has English. Others may or may not so be carefull!!!
19. It can take a few minutes because it has to upload 45mb or so of data to the phone. You will see the progress bar on the screen as it is updating. DO NOT TURN OFF THE PHONE!!
20. The phone will reboot by its self after a while. Some people have reported up to 20 minutes for it to work so BE PATIENT! If it never reboots then good luck!
21. When the phone reboots it will most likly be in some other language. It will load the OS settings and you will have to hit the left key when asked to reboot the phone agian.
Change the language:
--------------------
22. Go to |START|SETTINGS|0|2|Press the joystick to the right till you see english. Now press the left key to accept.
23. It will tell you that you have to reboot to take effect.
24. Press the back arrow 3 times (this closes apps in the SDA in case you did not know).
25. Power off then power on the phone.
26. Now go back to |START|SETTINGS|0|2| and change your local to whatever you want.
27. Now go to the Clock and change it to your time zone.
28. Power off and then power on the phone.
Radio Update
------------
29. Now close any open apps but this screen and run the 'ROMUpdateUtility.exe'.
30. Check all the boxes and say update if you are sure you want to update.
31. When the phone is back online you will be using the newest radio update for the SDA.
Restore Keys
------------
32. Now copy the key files you copied off, back to the \windows folder on the SDA.
33. Reboot and they should work. I have had problems with the # key not going to the silent profile anymore.
Unlock Agian
------------
34. Go back to the 'Unlock Phone and set SuperCID' section (step 10 - 15) and follow the same steps.
Now for your settings
---------------------
35. Add all those connection settings back into the phone.

Above is a link to a very good guide full of registry stuff and other things. Read it, its worth it.
After Dopod update
rom: 2.0.9.0
Operator: 2.6.37.0
Radio: 413.1.04_02.09.00
After Radio update
rom:2.0.9.0
Operator: 2.6.37.0
Radio: 4.1.13.19_02.37.01

One more thing about unlock. In the registry editor Policies key, you also want to add the following:
Now add a new DWORD value '0000101b' and set it's Value Data to 1. (It probably won't exist on your device, but if it does then just edit the value)
This sets the security model to Single-Tier, which will actually app-unlock the phone without having to edit the other two values listed in the guide (although I always change those as well just to be safe)
Notifications
Some people were also asking about the message notifications. The screen is not clearing on my device so I found a couple of links that might help.

my first rom upgrade for the sda, thanks to your easy to follow faq... many thanks!
interestingly enough, I didn't have to copy the keys back to the windows folder... strangely, the media keys already work. The only thing I don't like about this rom (as opposed to the ship rom I had) is that the english font looks different.
2 problems I'm having with Dopod_586W_Romcode_AKU2_Update.exe are full english support and inability to run spcservices which render it useless. I'm getting an error code for both SIM and CID. Also the english language support isn't all there. When I go to wifi setting and wpa, all the chars aren't there. No '_' and no '$', among many others.
No English T9
As much as I love the Dopod Rom, sooo fast, the lack of english t9 makes it unusable for me...

Prophet AKU2.3 pdamobiz customized rom [G4 with SPL 2.15.0001]

I've installed Prophet AKU2.3 pdamobiz customized rom [G4!!, with SPL 2.15.0001] 16 MB version yesterday to try:
http://www.pdamobiz.com/show_news.asp?NewsID=68863
and it's AWESOME. The whole device is boosted up, so fast then never before! It's the best rom I've ever tried so far, honestly. Also movies, musics, all the menus and everything works fine, properly, without stack or any problem. It didn't need and CID unlock or anything, I had just to follow the instructions the program gave me.
The link above is in thai, but mainly the procedure is the following:
1. download the program (unrar it to the folder you want)
2. Backup all your important data from the Prophet
3. Run "Clear Storage" program on your device, wait for soft reset
4. Tap the screen once to get to the "Align" procedure, but stop here (cross will be shown in the middle)
4. attach your Prophet to the PC with active sync (cable!)
5. Cancel the Active sync recognizing procedure (anyway, Active Sync will establish the connection)
6. Now start the program from PC called "UPGRADE_ROM.bat"
7. Wait, give it the time to install ext.rom and everything
8. Hard reset your device (Push at a time: camera, conn.comm buttons and reset with the stylus, hold on on camera a connection button, then push the green phone button)
and it's done. The only disatvantage is that it installs a lot of quite unusuable program, too, but it's not annoying at all. If you install Spb pocket plus and Pocket informant, you're done, no need for these progs (more or less).

minor glitches
Is anybody out there wich gets a "can not ececute TimeWizard.exe" error?
My upgrade hanged before the second reboot, and everything looks OK but I keep getting this annoying error.
The file is missing in the Windows directory. What is this suppossed to do?
Any help?
?
What can I do to translate this Rom into a german one? Or is a language Pack out there?
Isn't there an other link? PDAMobiz is to slow... ...downloaden for hours!
yeah a faster dl link would be great, tia
tried that ROM aswell, but it stucks after flashing at the dopod screen :\

HELP: Is my Tornado gone? (UPDATED)

EDIT: Please view at post 55 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2180418&postcount=29) where I'm holding now
Hi,
I've upgraded two weeks ago to Nitro's WM6 rom, followed all the instructions (Application Unlock, format BINFS etc) and everything went fine.
This morning, the phone shutted down WITHOUT anything been done from my end (software installed, rom update...), and restarted to a white screen...
I've removed the battery, waited few minutes, and then it worked back. Few minutes later it's stopped working... The for the whole day I had to keep on restart the phone every few minutes/hours, sometimes it worked, sometimes it got stuck at the Qtek blue screen, and sometimes it's brings a white screen...
This night, I've Hard Reset the device (with the two soft keys and power button), then entered the bootloader, and put back the original MFR WM5.
EVERYTHING went fine till 100%.
I still get stuck now at the Qtek blue screen... And now I get only that... It's never working...
Three important points:
1) "Info 2" in TeraTerm brings me this:
GetDeviceInfo=0x00000002
GetDeviceCID: Error - InitDecoder
2) "format BINFS" brings me "Not Allow Operation"
2) I didn't did anything before it happened! It's just came this morning...
Any help will be really appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks illy,
I've reflashed to WM5 again,

format BINFS brings me this:

I cannot use also SDA_ApplicationUnlock because my phone cannot load (stuck at a white screen or Qtek blue screen), so I cannot get it to work...
Any idea?

Could you describe what you call "stuck on bootloader"? If you remove battery, and place battery back, does it automatically go into bootloader when you turn phone on? or when you plug to USB?

I don't think its dead. I would search google or on this forum for those errors to see what they mean. Also, I would try to start all over following the guide. That CMD55 I've always got it, so I don't think that is a problem. Perhaps, with that last reading, I would think at that point and time, would be the perfect moment to try reflashing. Then again, like I said, I'd search for terraterm Errors
GetDeviceCID: Error - InitDecoder
HTCS 6HTCE.
Good Luck. Keep us posted, we read you!

format BINFS is NOT a Must. I don't do it everytime I flash a rom. Not even when going all the way back to Ship Rom.
Thanks markanthonypr for your research!
I've read this link, but honestly, I didn't found anything that could help me...
I've tried flashing again today (to WM6 now), and now it's always coming to bootloader... (I didn't did anything after flashing, it's just always coming to bootloader). Flashing to WM5 brought me the same results...
What is very weird here, is that all the flashing is going fine, but the phone is still not loading...
What is very weird also, that sometimes it's booting to bootloader, and sometimes it dosen't want even to boot, I have then to remove the battery, wait few minutes, put it back, and then it's working back to... bootloader.
Another thing that is even more weird, is that all of this happened all of the sudden, 2 weeks (!) after I've installed WM6... I didn't installed any soft anything, I've just noticed the morning that all my SMS have disseapeerd (only SMS), MMS acount got deleted... Since then: only troubles, and now it's not even booting to Windows...
Trust me, I've made all my possible to research about it (I learned to use Tera Term etc) but I cannot find the solution...

Thanks for the kind thoughts, If anyone decide to donate, PLEASE donate to your favorite ROM cookers. I am not one! I am just trying to contribute constructively and to avoid myself getting senile. I categorize myself as a "Tweaker" and I have once tweak a conglomerate's (my former employer) systems before (way back in 1979 - when most of you guys were not even born yet! LOL). The punishment: climbed up the promotional ladder
Warning: Dont do it; it's different in todays world.
Sorry for the off topic issue.
THANKS
Thanks illy for everything you're doing!! And if you have a little "tweak" that may help me...

I am so sorry! I dont know how but like Mark said, keep on trying. I am quite sure your device is not dead yet as long as the bootloader is there.
Just suggestions:
- remove TeraTerm, reboot pc and re-install teraterm.
- maybe even uninstall/re-install Activesynce
- change your usb port connection to the device
- I believe in TeraTerm capital and small letters does matter, so ensure you type correctly.
You may have read my post here a couple of days ago on the issue TeraTerm could'nt "see" my device. I tried all possibilities and it worked. My current problem is Activesynce is not "seeing" my \Windows device directory and \Applicaion Data\Volatile. Changing files settings seemed not to work. Am still trying to solve it.
Thanks
Edit: Afterthought: ensure your battery is fully charged this time.

I believe you mean to not allow "ActiveSync" to connect to USB so TeraTerm will take over. That's already done.

Now, even when I charge, I do not see the orange light telling me that it's charging? Maybe that's the reason? I have no other battery anyways...
Thanks for everything!
I had a little bit of difficulty like this the last time I flashed my phone. It only lasted about twenty minutes, but after several retries (and several variations on capital and lowercase letters) it finally worked. I can't remember whether I typed "format BINFS" or "Format BINFS" but one of them worked for me. I don't know if that would help or not, or if you've even tried that already, but as it sounded familiar I thought I'd try.

I have a friend who has a Wizard, and he discovered that if the battery is low enough, and the phone is turned off or restarted, the phone would not charge off the USB cable. He used his plug-in-the-wall charger and the phone started charging right up. I know about this because when I first got my phone I had the same issue - it arrived at my door with no juice in the battery and a European wall charger, and wouldn't charge from my USB connection. He loaned me his wall charger and it charged right up. If you haven't tried that yet, I highly suggest it.
Change where you connect the USB cable on your computer. There are usually several in the back and on some in the front. Plug it in a diff one. Read your PM.

As far as the battery charging:

Thanks for the advice! I'm charging it also with the wall charger, it may be charging, but I do not see the orange light...
Regarding format BINFS, the f is lowercase, and I've already done it, but seems like something else is corrupted but I have no idea what...

Thanks! I've done that! Still not working :-(
I've replied to your PM too.
UPDATE
I've installed again another WM5 update (i-mate_SP5_WWE_2.5.331.2.exe)
I've installed after that HTC_Tornado_Radio_02.61.01.exe
Everything went fine, but I'm still in bootloader...
Seems like something else is corrupted here...

Screen broken Cant switch disk drive mode to activesync

Telus touch diamond
I need to do a full backup before I send the unit in to repair the screen, which is totally black.
The last time I used it was in disk drive mode, and now I can't change it back to activesync mode.
How can I switch the unit to activesync mode?
1. I've tried using the up/down wheel buttons on a working touch diamond, and it doesn't do anything on the activesync/disk drive popup menu when I plug the diamond into a PC.
2. There's no way to start the start menu using the hardware buttons, so I can't navigate to the settings that way.
3. I've never used remote control software, and I can't install it now - no screen.
4. Can I change a registry setting remotely?
5. Sending it to the states or overseas to somebody who can repair the screen without wiping it is an option, as long as they don't change the hardware. Telus doesn't allow foreign serial numbers on their network.
You can access the registry with CeRegeditor-but I'm not sure you'll be able to do it with disk drive mode selected. This is the reg key you want, but I am not sure you can do it yourself:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\USBtoPC]
"SyncMode"=dword:00000000
Here is a cab I made-maybe you can run it off your sd card. Good luck!
Thanks for helping.
CEregedit (or SRregedit) requires activesync running, so that won't work.
And I can copy your cab file to the internal storage on the diamond, but I have no way to run it.
This is harder than I thought it would be.
Ug, forgot you don't have an sd card. Does the internal memory support autorun? If so, create a folder on it called 2577, rename the cab autorun.exe and do a soft reset. It's a long shot, but maybe it will install automagically. Or, do you have mortscript on the phone? If so, I bet you could get the mortscript to autorun
RegWriteDWord("HKLM","\Software\OEM\USBtoPC","SyncMode",0)
Put that script in a text file, rename it autorun.exe and give it a shot.
Edit: You probably don't need the soft reset. When you disconnect from the usb, if the storage memory has an autorun function, it should occur then.
It looks like the internal memory does support autorun, without a soft reset.
I put the cab in 2577 and renamed it.
When I disconnect, there's a splink sound which I'm sure means a popup asking me to press OK in the top right corner or Accept/Continue in the bottom left corner, neither of which I can do. None of the hardware buttons are Enter/Continue buttons. I tried the dpad button anyway.
I don't think I ever installed mortscript, but I tried that too. Same sound, and it's still in disk drive mode.
The cab almost saved me (TP2 screen unresponsive). Able to launch it but still in "Disk Drive" mode afterwards (Touch Pro2) =(
I can run the Registry editor bundled with the NRG rom but can't navigate without screen to get the right key (or even enter one)... Could anyone transform this code in a cab file (without install confirmation) ? Thanks in advance

EDIT : I finally achieved making those registry values into a cab but can't install it successfully (errors in value/keys maybe),... Anyone can help provide the right thing to do to activate Activesync by default again ? Thanks
Or is there any way to put it in bootloader mode to reinstall with the former rom without activesync ? From sd card maybe ? please...

Retriving contacts from bricked HTC (WM only)

Hail to community,
Just a useful note from my personal experience:
What:
Getting contacts, sms, mails, and all etc from WM phone with broken touchscreen.
How:
There are two options possible.
1) You have your phone set to connect to PC with ActiveSync.
Well, man, you got lucky... can't even imagine how lucky you are...
Look for MyMobiler123. Install it. Get your screen of you broken phone to your desktop and do whatever you need... PIMBackup, Sync with Outlook - up to you...
2) (Mine ) You got your phone broken when it was set to Connect as Drive
Well, man, you got NO luck
But chances are.
Although it mostly depends on what phone you got. For some it might be simply enough to remove (physically) storage card from its nest and phone starts connect as ActiveSync. If you got it - be happy and go to case 1) above.
If not... brace yourself... Tho, the only thing you need to do is to bring your phone to a state 1) described above, its not so easy as it sounds...
If your luck didn't run out completely you can simply connect your phone to PC. Create "autorun.inf" in a root of you storage card with a content like this:
Code:
[autorun]
open=autorun.exe
Next, you have to do some coding to create autorun.exe and make it do what you need to. Good if you had .Net installed on you phone. Then its easy...
(Might be worthy to run not .exe but some kind of script, tho I didn't test it)
Now, copy that autorun.exe to the storage card, just like you did with autorun.inf and ...
detach the cord!!! (restart phone if needed, or in-out your storage card).
What happens now is that autorun.exe is executed every time your storage card becomes visible to WM.
(To ensure it works, make log action to log.txt on your storage card, so you could see what goes on up there).
Ok, we are at the point where we able to run our autorun.exe.
Congrats. We got control.
Now... the last and the most question WHAT this autorun.exe needs to do.
And the answer is simple - to switch USBtoPC from Drive to ActiveSync.
Welcome to Registry
What you need is HKLM\Software\OEM\USBtoPC and all the Key within.
Yeah.. and need to shut down HTC popup service if you had one! (this is important).

My code was looking like this:
Code:
using (StreamWriter stream = File.CreateText(@"test.txt"))
{
stream.WriteLine("OK");
stream.Flush();
stream.Close();
}
RegistryKey key = Registry.LocalMachine;
key = key.OpenSubKey( "Software" );
key = key.OpenSubKey( "OEM" );
key = key.OpenSubKey( "USBtoPC", true );
key.SetValue("SyncMode", 0);
key.SetValue("Device_Type", 2);
And the way to shut down HTC popup service:
Code:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\Services\HTCUSBToPCPopUp]
"Module"="\\Windows\\HTCUSBToPCSrv222.dll"
"Prefix"="UTP"
"Index"=dword:00000000
"Info"=dword:00000000
"Order"=dword:0000000a
"Flags"=dword:00000000
"Keep"=dword:00000001
"Context"=dword:00000000
"DisplayName"="HTCUSBToPC Service"
"Description"="USB To PC PopUp Service"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services\HTCUSBToPCPopUp]
"Order"=dword:0000000a
"Keep"=dword:00000001
"Index"=dword:00000000
"Prefix"="UTP"
"Description"="USB To PC PopUp Service"
"Context"=dword:00000000
"DLL"="HTCUSBToPCSrv222.dll"
"DisplayName"="HTCUSBToPC Service"
May the Force be with you
