Hermes.... Universal... or M.A.G.I.C.??? - General Topics

Hi guys,
I currently have the Xda IIs version of Blue Angel, running on the TuMa 1.3, but it seems like time for a change. I'm currently considering 3 options: HTC Universal, HTC Hermes, and Advance TC M.A.G.I.C. (I know it's not HTC, but...)
Details on M.A.G.I.C. can be found at:
http://www.advancetc.com/MAGIC_technical_specs.jpg
Thanks!

For me, it's gonna be Hermes. I had a Qtek 9000 (Universal) for a week to play around with, very nice features and the screen is very good, but it is far too large for me. I come from a Magician, so the Vario was the best option for me now in terms of size. I am very happy with it, so Hermes (with same form factor) is definitely the successor to my Wizard. Same goes for M.A.G.I.C. far too large for me, although the specs are astonishing. And since this phone is the first ever made by that company, expect lots and lots of flaws, poor support etc etc.
Have you seen the thread on the other HTC devices due to come out this year? Some include GPS, others the same specs as Wizard but much thinner etc etc. if they all make it to market here, it's gonna be a hard choice, but for now I am aiming at the Hermes.
If size is not an issue for you and neither is money, I would go for the Universal any time. it is available now, there is good support from this community, the specs are very good and ROM updates are frequent.

Eh...you forgot the winner - Atom!

Ha ha, sorry for that. But for me a keyboard is very usefull. Willing to give it up for a GPS, but Atom does not satisfy my needs, sorry!
Ideal devices all depend upon personal preferences, so Atom is no option for me. But if you don't need a keyboard, Atom is definitely a good option!

I don't think you should count on getting that M.A.G.I.C. any time soon! We really have no idea if it is good or not, and it wont be out for months.

M. A. G. I. C., but .......

bloggy.

Koksie, my previous PPC was a BA with hardware keyboard. I have found that I type a lot faster with PhonePad and T9 on the Atom (HTC version, ripped from a Wizard ROM) then I ever did with that BA keyboard!

I find that I use the hardware keyboard more than I could ever have imagined when I had my Compact! On the Compact, I hardly send sms messages, because of my hesitation in using the phone pad or the on-screen keyboard. I just couldn't type fast enough to be convienent! With my Wizard, I just slide it open and type away! Well, every one has his favourite input method, that much is clear! Well, if you don't need a keyboard, better go for Atom or Prophet, since they combine a small form factor with great specs. Or wait for the trinity, which also look very good.

Best PDA nowadays?

I tried the search button but couldn't find my answer.
My XDA II is having some "age issues" and I'm planning on replacing it.
But, what is the best choice nowadays? What is the best replacement for my XDAII? I'd like a similar one but with WM5, better camera maybe, WIFI, BT and a powerful but stable processor of course. I’m using Tomtom navigation on it as well.
Thanks for the advice.
Hard to say. I'd say, right now, either the Wizard or, if the price difference isn't a problem, the TyTN. I wouldn't myself get the Universal - I have both the Univ and Wizard and prefer the latter in everyday life.
Or, if you don't mind the need for manual import, the new VGA Gigabyte i128 (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=273825 ).
Finally, you can wait for the O2 Flame / HTC Omni, they're hopefully much better than the Universal
Thanks for the quick reply Menneisyys, I'm looking into it.
TYTN looks promising..
Hello,
I would say that the best choice at the moment is TyTN. I have one and I must say that this is it. I have had also Universal for some time so I've compared them and for me TyTN is better. Maybe the processor is 400MHz but from what I've heard Samsung has better architecture that Intel. For me it's enough, besides I must tell that Universal sometimes had some lags (probably the reason is VGA screen). You can compare technical details and besides VGA screen (and eventually the processor) TyTN has better tech specs. It's smaller, fits in your pocket without problems (Universal is really much bigger, i can send photo of these two lying to each other if you want) and i prefer the keaboard of TyTN as well. I must say that I'm very pleased with this device
i dont want the slide keyboad and the thickness it adds so imho
Trinity is what i would get

id say wait a lil while

It is hard to say what is the best pda it all depends on your usage and what qualities you prefer in pda. I would say HTC Artemis/HTC P3300/O2 XDA Orbit is one of the best. It has integrated GPS, pretty compact and very light for Pocket PC, decent screen, good phone functionality and good battery life.
that samsung is not a phone though it's more of a microlaptop
and i know as soon as i get a device with gps

will hit and blow gps out of the water

v.v good point well made
Hi Rudegar, long time no see.
Thanks to all of you for the inputs.
I think I narrowed it down to TYTN or Trinity.
Next stop is E-Bay...
Thanks again.

Galileo is still some way off becoming operational - I should worry about it just now.
If you want a one hand phone, you should definitely look into a P525 by ASUS. The benchmark tests are amazing. I'm getting mine in 2 days.
My Universal is over a year old and I still love it. I don't think that for me the TyTn is a replacement for the Universal. I simply love the large VGA screen and the keyboard, though this comes with a downside of large size. However during this time I never felt that it was too large not to be pocketable.
I will wait till a device comes out with a large VGA screen and a qwerty keyboard.
But as we all agree these are personal preferences. I do a lot of work on the Planmaker spreadsheet and a lot of browsing using Netfront and so a good screen is probably on the highest priority.
Regards
I use mine mostly as a phone, planning of agenda's, calculations, tomtom navigation, Aviation navigation and utilities, camera and some utilities from programs I installed on it.
My XDA II did just fine but I miss the WM5. Rotating screens and stuff and the fact that is starting to show some defects (sound disappearing, self soft reset...)
I want the same PDA but up to date..I think I got a pretty good idea of what I want now. TYTN, Trinity or XDA Orbit.

Eten Glofish X500+ Support?

Does anyone here have an eten x500+? I am thinking of buying one but want to make sure it is supported here because I would like to be able to customize it like I can with my Wizard but cant seem to find anything on the forum on it...
This website, obviously, is mainly devoted to HTC devices. With that said, my boyfriend has the x500. He is using the WM6 upgrade for it.
Eten uses a heavily modified ROM on their devices. They have TONS of OEM applications that replace the Microsoft ones in addition to removing a fair bit of WM6 standard items. The device is touchscreen only and I think it sucks because I've yet to use a decent SIP for WM since MS dropped JOT. Also for being touchscreen only it doesn't seem to be as sensitive as my Mogul and you can see the plastic move when you touch the screen.
My bf bought it when it was the thinnest and lightest WM5 device. If you want a thin and light WM device, I recommend a Smartphone. I used to have a Moto Q and would recommend a Smartphone over the glofiish.

Thank you for your input. I honestly prefer devices with a querty keyboard anyway. Do you know of any VGA devices with a querty keyboard and also a 400mHZ processor like the x500?
PS - Glad to see there are actually women on these forums and its not just a bunch of guy nerds.

Toshiba G900.

(Just the first link off google, personally these guys are tools I thought the difference between smartphone and pocket pc was pretty clear - guess not).
Anyway no HTC device with a VGA screen and qwerty keyboard exists. Unless you consider the HTC Advantage or the old HTC Universal, which I dont imagine you have in mind, ergo, the Toshiba best suits your criteria, but like the Eten is not directly supported by these forums.

A nice phone overall but the screen is kind of awkward looking... It has the width of a QVGA device but the height of a VGA device. Strange but neat looking. Thanks for the suggestion and the quick reponse.
I take it there arent many other VGA phones and other than the Advantage, none made by HTC. I suppose I will just wait for a while. Eventually they will have to come out with something smililar to the 8525, MDA, or WING that is VGA and still has the querty keyboard.
The screen ratio of WVGA is actually desirable as it is CLOSE to the Golden Ratio of 1.6 (the device ratio is actually 1.7). To read why it's desirable, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio

Help!! Polaris, or Kaiser?????

Hi , cant decide which of these phones to get. I'm getting either on 02 uk, anyone help me to decide which is better? (orbit2 or vario III).
Thankyou.
Stu.
kaiser got keyboard
poraris got fm radio and is suppose to have a mouch touchflow'ish screen
Yup, it's pretty much keyboard versus no keyboard. If you don't need it, save yourself the bulk and get it with a flush screen.
Touch Dual
I um'd and ahh'd bought the Kaiser (loved it) and just 2 days ago got the Niki, suffice to say the Kaiser is going on eBay (well i'll give it a few days more).
The niki vs the kaiser, lacks wifi, gps and full keyboard.
But, its so so sexier and cool, feels good and is awesome.
depending how much I can be bothered to spend I was considering a Nike. The polaris looks sweet (Next generation Artemis??) but the one thing id miss is a hardware keyboard.
Kaiser should be coming into its own soon with the driver situation looking a bit brighter but Baring in mind the next Hermes/Kaiser type device wont be that far away methinks (TyTN III?).
"The polaris looks sweet (Next generation Artemis??)"
well it looks kinda like artemis but under the hood they are not related much
polaris is pretty much as stated the same hardware as kaiser without the keyboard
and with fm radio
htc dont truely run families like that
some may look kinda alike
and others may have 100% the same insides
.....
This Dutch tech news website has cought some info about the driver issue not being fixed with drivers, but with patches to boost performance. They do however mention that it all comes from unverified sources, so it could be just some rumour, but it could be true aswell.

Should I get the HTC Polaris or wait

I used to have the Imate Jamin and actually learned to like the phone althought it wasn't quick enough for me in the first instance and subsequently the lack of GPS. I waited in anticipation for the next version which I think was the HTC P3600 but that only had the Texas OMAP 200 Mhz similar to the Imate Jamin. Hence I didn't want that.
Next in line was the HTC Polaris which was way high on my list but then the iphone was released and I was so smitten by the screen that I thought I wanted a really nice screen next and looked for a VGA screen. Among all these I ended up with the Eten X800 which, for all its high specs, has very poor end user experience. Its too slow, simple as that. I was so distressed that I wanted to return it but was threaten a 30% repackaging fee by Expansys. So I settled with it, played with the ROM and now am using it with Windows 6.1
I think I've become accustomed to the slow speed of the phone rather than it becoming quicker with the new ROMs. It actually has a Samsung processor running at 500Mhz but with just 64Mb RAM. I suspect the VGA screen, without a graphic processors takes too much out of the processor.
Now I'm basically too tired of waiting for a miracle software upgrade and would like to get a new PDA, one which is properly functional. The HTC Polaris is actually the only one on my list of to get. How is the experience like, I want a really quick and responsive unit. But sometimes people's experience are hard to understand. There are as many good response on the EtenX800 forum which so so surprising given my experience.
Is there any new PDA coming out soon. I really like VGA screen but not at the expense of the unit's speed. Thanks for the advice
WTF ?.... Don't question it.... Just get a Polaris !
I work for O2 and I use it to kill off all of my iPhone owning collegues.
It's the best device I've ever used.
It's highly customisable and some of the applications that some of the developers in this forum are coming out with would certainly give OEMS's like HTC, Apple and M$ a run for their money.
I've asked my wife to place my Polaris in my coffin if I die.

Which one to take: HTC Touch Diamond 2 or SE Xperia X1 ?

Hello, guys ...I was looking for a site with dedicated members well grounded in technology, and pda areas and finally found it.
Just registered here and have my first question. Im getting a smartphone. Suppose I prefer WM based pda-s, no matter the fact I have never had one before. So now I'm wondering which one to buy. The choice is between these two : HTC Touch Diamond 2 and SE Xperia X1. I don't know any of what their hardware parameters mean (processor, memory and etc.) or which one is better. That is the reason why I'm posting this now. To myself I suppose it would be better to have a hardware buttons, D-pad and qwerty keyboard like X1's but really like the more fingertip oriented TouchFlo on HTC. Well, I know from the forum that I can have it eventually on SE X1, so the SE Panels are already taking advantage over HTC. However, X1`s camera performance is way too low and it doesn't have an accelerometer which I think would be rather useful despite the fact the screen rotates when the slider is opened. Have read many reviews and watched many videos with both devices but still can`t decide which one to take. I need my future phone for surfing the internet, skype (mostly using wifi), music, videos and also entertainment like gaming cause everybody get bored sometimes and it's good to have some cool and glossy games... Well. that's from me so I'll be really thankful if you share your opinion and give me a piece of advise.
P.M. - My apologies if I've made some mistakes in the text but English is not my native language...
Welcome to the forum
I really don´t like the design of Xperia at all. I would choose it just because the keyboard
Hi, check out the Diamond 2 section of this forum for more info...
Check out Diamond 2 Spec, you should be impressed
You should ask yourself if you need/want a keyboard on your phone or not...
I would say buy the Xperia and flash a ROM with Manila on it, this is the fingerfriendly software of the diamond 2.
How about Touch Pro 2?
Well, the more I read, the less I know which to take. The question really is do I need a hardware keyboard and its answer maybe is "yes".
About the touch pro 2...I have taken it into consideration but Im sure it going to be pretty expensive when it pops up. In addition it's kinda of bulky and bigger than the X1 and even heavier according to the official info on it. I'll still continue to look around and keep an eye on this forum and the sections about D2 and X1 and have my decision in the very last moment - I'm getting one of them at the end of the next month so I still have some time to think about that. Yet, I suppose X1 would be my new future buddy Thanks to all of you
dont buy X1, coz its kinda poor built and laggy, i have a good experience in wm, and thus far after using X1, diamond, wizard, touch, omnia. I find Omnia to be the best, fastest, and fully working it has all the decent features and its 5 megapixel camera with flash actually works, but it doesnt have support on this site. I will recommend you to see several other brands other than HTC before zeroing on any device.
