Upgrading ... is it really Necessary. - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Guyz, i've been using my imate JAM for about 3 weeks now. havent had any problems with it. Running preety smooth it is. but i occasionally had to soft reset it because it got hung up on something (maybe it was processing something or ..) Anyways, i've read loads about this Upgrading of ROMS. tell me if it is really necessary. And if it really helps to upgrade, WHICH ROM VERSION is the best and STABLE. Please Help me.

Well it's not necessary to update the rom, don't know your version but it can't be very old, isn't it?
Check your memory to see whether it is running low on ram, start -> settings -> system -> memory -> main (1st tab). The right side shows the ram occupied by files on your device, the left side shows the ram occupied by running programs. A magician only got 64MB of ram shared by running programs & installed programs. & installing apps. to the default location decreases that amout rapidly. Also take a look on the 3rd tab (running programs), pushing the x button doesn't close programs it minimizes them. You can free up ram by closing them manually or by installing app like vjokbut (very small), spb pocket plus, battry bar & others.
If your system is constantly running low on memory & you got a lot of apps. installed in the default location, consider doing a hard-reset & start all over again installing apps to either SD or internal Storage folder. To choose where cab-files should install you can use cabinstl very handy small tool. & don't forget to delete the Internet Explorer once in a while by hand in \windows\temporary internet files or have eg memmaid do it & You can even store the cache on SD if you like with this pogram.
If this all doesn't help you can try BIG Storage. With this you enlarge the internal Storage folder from 7 to 27MB. Howto's on the board & in the wiki.
Regards, M

Is it not the other way around, the right side (Program) shows the running programs and the left side (Storage) is for installed programs? I usually check my memory after starting a newly installed program just to see how much ram it consumes and it's the right side that decreases in value.

Yes you're correct I messed up. The right side (Program) shows the RAM consumed by running programs and the left side (Storage) is for installed programs & other features in the \Windows folder.
Excuse me pls,
M

no problem man. nobody is perfect.

Ok,
First: ov all my phone specs are:
imate JAM
ROM ver - 1.12 WWE
RADIO ver - 1.12.10
PROTOCOL ver - 1337.42
EXT Rom ver - 1.12.167 WWE
Secondly: DO i need an UPGRADE ??
And: hmmm, BIG STORAGE.. well it increases my Interernal Storage to 27 MB .. and it helps to do ....... what ???

Your rom is OK & upgrade really NOT necessary. BS is nice to install apps on, no need. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Which files to delete to have more storage?

Hi there,
I have a MDA 2, 2.03a.64WWE 2005 ROM flashed with HIMA_DOC tool patched. Altough I did not install ANY programs on device, after some time storage memory shrunk back to 0.43 MB and device started to give that annoying low storage level warning . Anyone knows the reason for this and any opinions why did storage memory shrunk back to that level? Any ideas for solution?

Dr_Cikolata
Delete your browser cache and empty Outlook deleted items for a start.
This is really strange! by default, windows reset the memory level to 50% to storage & 50% to applications.
check the startup items, maybe there's a program or service running that causes all that shrinking..
clear up to 7 mb
Ok problem solved
I tought IE automatically empties the temporary files folder once in a while, but eventually it did not... 5 MB of junk deleted and back to normal life... Thanks for the advice...

ohh great! if u like to have a software that will clean all the junk files on u're PPC, consider MemMaid
Have a great day..

have I got a virus?

HTC TyTN + IGb micro SD
generally running;
SPB pocket plus 3.1.2
SPB Diary 1.7.1
Wisbar Advance 2.7.0.1
Last week I posted about memory storage v programme. After getting v confused about it i uninstalled some apps from the device and instead loaded them to memory card (was this right or wrong?). That left me with 12Mb of storage memory free, I figured that was fine and so left it at that.
This week my device reported critical memory space - storage memory down to 0.12Mb!!!
I have un installed several more apps which I like and use to get to 3.55Mb of storage memory available, but even this is dropping and I dont know why.
Q have I got a virus? How can I tell?
Q Can I tell what is taking up space in memory? If yes how? please dont direct me to the "find" large files as all it shows me is stuff on the storage card.
Q If I install programs to the storage card, do they still take up room in storage memory? If so what benefit do I get from installing to MC?
All help greatly appreciated
Pete
No such thing as a WM virus. Chances are a lot better IE cache ate it all. Try deleting cache files thru IE's menu.
You gain memory by installing to a memory card but if the card comes loose, pops out, you forget it, etc, you're suddenly without your apps. I don't install anything to the card and generally have no problem. You might want to do a search on how to put your IE cache onto the card, tho. That'll solve a lot more problems than installing apps there will.
Try TreeSize
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-treesize-v1-00-03.html
This allows you to check the memory in use on your device.
there are a few known wm virus's but never heard about anybody getting one
think they were just made to show it could be don
the market of mw phones / pda's is much too small still for virus's to find their way to devices

Difference between install under device and flash disk in Tomal rom

Hi guys, i have recently flashed my uni with the awesome TML v8.81 Rom, I noticed there is a Flash Disk under My device. What's the purpose of that? Could anyone tell me what's the difference between installing software under my device and flash disk?
Many thanks
id like to know this too, as it seems the flash disk removes 15MB or so of much needed RAM, what is the purpose of it, so far I have installed everything on normal storage, should I be installing things like Opera on the flash disk because it runs faster?
types of memory
Ok, quick resume of memory:
There are four types of internal memory on the Universal (the quoted MB are from a 64MB G3 uni):
Code:
[B]Storage Memory[/B]
Type: Internal Storage
Size: Usually 43.72MB with 40MB free (depends on installation of full/vanilla ROM)
What: Your main storage for all installations on your device (including windows)
Use: This where the device ROM (eg WM6.x) and other device programs are stored (everything under \).
eh? : This can be considered much like your C: drive on a PC.
+info: Get a ROM that has just about everything you want.
Getting vanilla ROM and installing apps in Storage is likely to use more Storage than if you get ROM that has all apps you require.
I never install anything here unless I have no option, or it's a Today item.
Some programs will use this as cache or temp storage area.
[B]Program Memory[/B]
Type: Program (RAM)
Size: Usually 48-49MB with 30MB or less free (this figure lowers with the more Apps that are run, an initial 12MB is eaten by Windows)
What: This is your available memory for running programs. Program Memory is also for used by Boot and PagePool (usually 6MB).
Use: The more of this you have, the more programs you can run, and the faster memory hungry apps can run.
eh? : This can be considered much like your RAM on a PC
+info: The Today Screen items will also eat up this memory, so stay away from "bling" Today items if you want other memory hungry apps to run (like route navigators)
NB. This memory is NOT eaten up or reduced by any other medium (ie, FlashDisk). 30MB free is great, but 20MB is usual running for a 64MB Uni.
[B]FlashDisk[/B] (only available on G3 according to wiki [I]- someone clarify?[/I])
Type: Internal Storage
Size: Can be 10MB to 30MB - and is made available solely by what's left by the ROM and given to you by the cook
What: Extra storage which is retained through a soft-reset.
Use: Store programs you always want available (ie, not on SD), but don't want in your Storage Memory
eh?: This can be considered much like your second hard-drive on a PC.
+info: If important, choose cook and ROM wisely, otherwise install such stuff on approprate SD/Storage.
The FlashDisk is where I store my messages and attachments (and programs like music/video players if cook doesn't supply them).
NB. This doesn't take up any Program Memory. It's either made available by the cook, or if the cook doesn't make it available it's wasted space that you can't use.
[B]ExtendedROM[/B]
Type: Internal Storage
Size: Is usually 9.96MB
What: Extra memory which doesn't survive a soft-reset.
Use: Anything you don't mind losing :)
eh?: This could be considered as a RAMDrive on a PC (that is, in that it's volatile, but not that it takes up any Program Memory)
+info: I use this for all cache (eg PIExplorer, Opera etc)
NB. Again, this is either made available or wasted space you can't use (see FlashDisk NB).
[B]Storage Card[/B]
Type: External Storage
Size: Can be anything (I have seen up to 16GB)
What: Extra storage for programs, cache etc. Always slower than any of the above. (NB. If anyone really interested, I can get you some values here)
Use: Anything that doesn't fit into the Uni ;)
Install apps here that aren't required by the system (ie, non-Today items)
eh?: This could be considered as any removeable storage on a PC (even an SD card!!!)
+info: Don't put anything here that the system expects to exist (eg, Today items). I use it for maps, music, videos and all apps not supplied by ROM cook.
I only have use one huge SD card, so I install all my apps on it. You may want to reconsider your installations if you use more than one SD card.
However, Cotulla created a ROM for G3 that combined Storage (not program memory)
.
Nice answer that!
Now here is where it gets confusing I own a G4 with Tomals Rom on it and it has flash disk on it, I always thought it wasn't meant to. It does work too. I keep other small apps on it, it seems to load as fast as main memory. SD cads have a small time lag on a soft reset, so anything that needs to load on start up needs to be on board not SD. I'm not a cook so i'm sure there is a good answer but I often wondered why memory can't be repartitioned over to ram instead of flash disk or storage?
Jay
Yes, I think that wiki is wrong. I'm sure it's the ExtendedROM that's only on G3, whereas FD is down to the cook.
Hardware constraint on Uni means you can't partition Storage (or FD etc) over to Program Memory (RAM).

Out of main memory....help please

Although I have all photos, music, apps etc pointed to 'external' memory I am now getting low memory (<2MB) warnings. I have manaully purged (as much as I feel confident with) main memory and even uninstalled and re-installed programs to ensure that they reside in external memory. However when I search for files >64KB there are no files reported in main. This is driving me crazy and I need help before I microwave my HTC Diamond. Please, please point me in the right direction
The messages are probably not for storage memory but for either RAM or virtual memory. Close applications instead of minimizing them (the usual default). Get a task manager and see what's going on.
I hoped that that was the case however I have a RAM cleaner tool and even after running that and killing all processes I still have low memory. Is there any way I can determine what is taking up main memory?
you know one of my friends has the same problem with his samsung omni and i can't for the life of me find what is taking up so much room. he is pretty back to stock and we have tried everything. i tell him to return his phone as defective but he hasn't. is this a winmo problem that could be a bad code or is it just dumb luck that this has happened to an htc and samsung?
Calendar items, phone logs, messages reside in main memory too -- have you cleared those?
I do use the calendar and maybe clearing some of the old entries will help. However I do not use the handset as a voice phone, only data, and have no call logs or texts taking up space. I do use it for email so will check that too. That said it's currently using 83.36MB out of 84.56MB and doubt if the odd deletions will make a great difference. Is there a way of partitioning some of the storage card space over to extend the main storage area?
You can relocate \My Documents pretty easily with a registry change. You can also move your PIE cache (sk tools will help with this). These things might help. I thought the diamond had 4G of internal memory? Does it have a small main memory and then a large internal storage memory? I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with it.
You may want to install ClearTemp or something similar to clean out your temp and volatile folders. And you're sure it's not a ram issue? Do you have the problem immediately after a soft reset, or does it take a while?
I may have been leading you down the garden path. When I run the memory app' in Settings there are two totals: Storage and Program. In storage 82.7MB out of 84.5MB is in use and in program 78MB out of 111MB is in use. The Diamond complains of being almost out of memory shortly after it is turned on. Without a guide to follow I'm a little ill at ease attempting registry changes even though I have advanced config and PHM RegEdit installed. I will try ClearTemp if I can install it! Thanks for the help to date.
Does anyone know how to clear out the 'storage' area of the HTC as Opera is now refusing to run (not enough cache space...?) I'm facing the prospect of reloading the firmware (again) with no confidence I won't be back in this situation again in a couple of months
The out-of-memory warning message is activated after the ram memory is lower than a desired value .
The activation pattern and the threshold value are controlled by a set of registry entries under \HKCU\Software\Htc\TaskManager\
Can Play With It By Changing The Threshold Value In Registry.
Thanks for that, however at < 1-2MB of storage area remaining my problem is how do I recover storage capacity? I used ClearTemp and I now have around 7MB free which is much better though not ideal. Surely there must be a way of tweaking the storage / program balance through one of the toolkits?
I had the same prob few month back. The best way is to Hard reset > reinstall programs your REALLY NEED to internal storage except .net C Framework or Smart Protect etc... [install those types of programs to main memory]
The other way is
Buy SkTools if you dont have it
move things ie. programs to internal storage!
I select internal memory every time I install an app which further mystifies me. Now I can't get Opera to run.... it's just a year of break downs for me

[Q] Identify where programs installed to (i.e Main Storage or Storage Card)

Hi all,
sorry if this has been posted already. looked around on google etc but to no avail.
i seem to be always running low on Storage space for installed programs on the internal memory. plenty left on storage card which is fine for installing games and other apps.
however for screen mods and themes etc i.e BSB tweaks, CHT etc. I always install on the phone memory, which is now running very low.
ive tried removing all cabs no longer in use or used rarley and still have little memory, plenty of spare memory under program but not in storage (on main memory)
so im looking for an alternative to the standard 'remove programs' function which will identify what cabs are installed to the internal memory and what is installed to memory card.
or alternativly a way or transfering some of the internal program storage over to the main storage.
this will save me having to do a hard re set to restore all storage space and re install cabs again etc.
im running standard WWE 1.48.405.2 Vodafone ROM, Radio 2.05.51.05_2 on WM6.5, HD2, any help is much appreciated, thanks, Batez
use pocket mechanic to transfer applications (which phone mechanic is able to transfer) from main memory to the storage card. This app is not free though but works a treat. Not sure if there are any free apps out there which can do something similar.
Thanks Mate
