No service on XDA2s when in a coverage area while roaming - General Topics

Hello all,
This is a strange problem that I am having with my xda2s while roaming. Origonaly from the UKs O2 network I have taken a recent business trip to Trinidad.
No my way to trinidad I had a stop over in Antigua and Barbados, and in both places the GSM automatically picked up the network and i was able to call, sms and blackberry.
Apon arrival in Trindad i turned the flight mode off and all i got was a no service on the notification. i attempted to set it up manually by setting it to scan and the only network that it found was displayed as '374 130'. I tried to connect but a message appeared saying that it was unable to register on the selected network.
I took my sim card out and placed it in a nokia 6310 phone that i had on me and searched for a network. It found two, TSTT and TTO130. I could connect the nokia to the TSTT network but couldnt to the other.
I am a bit confused why my xda would not connect or even find the TSTT network that my nokia found, as the O2 website states that you need a dual band phone to roam in Trinidad.
I would gladly welcome any sugestions,
M.

here u go
Trinidad and Tobago Digicel MCC setting is 374 and MNC is 130. Bmobile MCC is 374 and MNC is 129. Digicel piggy backs on the Bmobile carrier signal and because of this competition Bmobile has defended and locked out certain attributes.

wm6 and roaming

just wrote bloody long post and pc crashed in internet cafe-
so gonna write a short one now.
i am running darkforce wm6-very stable does what i want it to do in the uk
howvever in stockholm at present and cannot browse internet or send/recieve email for what will amount to the same the problem.
the handset is obvioulsy unlocked and with t-mobile,but when abroad last year with different wm5 roms -no problems everything worked fine, have spoken to t-mobile who are about as much use as a choclate tea pot
1) when trying to connect to internet-it does nothing-if i force the connection and get it use the csd t-mobile -i get 'failed to dial' message
2) when trying to retrive pop3 email(no exchange server involved) get new message about extra charge as roaming and then it try to connect for a spilt second before displaying error syncronising
i can roam all networks pick everything up?
please help people
hello,
I've no probleme with data connection when roaming my provider is SFR (france) and roaming provider is proximus (belgium).
Have you trying with another roaming provider ?
as many as i can try telia, vodafone se ,iq etc etc
no joy-beginning toi think it is to do with t-mobile
also without stating the obvious, as and when i can find a free wifi-everything works
are you having prob only with your data connection?? back in uk (?) were you using 3g or gprs and lastly in setting/phone/ is the band set to wcdma (3g) or gprs
in uk had set data to auto all have tried every over type- but still does not explain why it worked seamless before -it either is something within the wm6 rom(i doubt) or t-mobile(proable)
but as i m traveling as soon as i get back i would like to get to the bottom of it.
It may not be your Universal - it may be your provider
Did you inform T-Mobile that you were going overseas? They need to activate international roaming on your account...
I've seen this problem before (working in a phone shop and all...), a customer from country xxxxx can't make\receive calls - because international roaming is not active on their account
Roaming worked on WM5, now not on WM6
Hi
I had similar problems. While Roaming previously (From SA (MTN), roaming in Mauritius (on Cellplus and Emtel) under WM5, I had no problems with SMS (text) or data calls.
Recently upgraded to WM6 (Laurentius' V7 VideoCall) and when landing in Mauritius last week, I could not send SMS(text) or connect data. It picked up the network. I did not test normal voice calls, since I usually dont make any while roaming. I simply used my sim card in a different handset for the week, but it was very frustrating, since Ive come to rely heavily on data access while travelling overseas (for email, skype, etc)

Could also be Radio Ver
Hi all, Could you all edit your posts and enter your Radio SStack Ver ?
And if you can remember what Ver you were on when it used to work on WM5.
As stated in the post, the 1.18 Stack had updates for roaming, I haven't had a chance to test it myself, could anyone provide feedback on roaming with 1.18.
Cheers,
Beast
dark force(excellent) and radio 1.15 will try upgrade as leave country in a few weeks
I roam between China, Hong Kong and Taiwan a lot. It appears data works better with some local service providers only. So what I do is when travelling to a new place, know which local providers data network 'roams' better with my China Mobile, by manually selecting, and trying, one by one, on the phone control panel, network selection part. Once I found one that worked, then I manually fix to that one.
Now everytime I travel to a different region, I just do, phone control panel->network->manual-> choose the known good one.
I hope this works in your situation and network providers.

using US phone (t-mobile) in Hong Kong

I didn't see any posts on the subject so I thought I would add my datapoint.
ask t-mobile for the unlock code before you travel overseas. once you insert the new sim then you can type in the unlock code and the new sim works fine. i was able to get my unlock code in few minutes from the store where i bought phone.
I first tried a Peoples prepaid card (China Mobile hong kong). Voice works fine but i couldn't get the data to work. Peoples is slow (2g) so i punted on them and got a Vodafone prepaid. works good. the daily price cap is $3 (USD) for unlimited data, which is fine for me.
There is one manual setup thing you need to do:
under Mobile network settings -> access point names you need to add a new entry
Name: smartone-vodafone
APN: smartone-vodafone
then scan network operators and select this one:
network: SmarToneVodafone
mobile network type: UMTS
if you go to about phone -> status then network and mobile network type should be printed out same as above.

Nexus S roaming problem with ICS

Hi,
I have a Nexus S I9023 with baseband I9023XXKI1
Provider is Telenet in Belgium, which is a full MVNO with its own MNC
When running any Gingerbread version, the phone works fine when going out of the country, and returning.
But with any ICS rom (stock or CyanogenMod) the phone will not be able to connect to any international providers, when my providers SIM is installed. But when I stick my providers SIM into another phone the SIM will switch over, after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and I can roam to any other international provider without problems, but the phone will not switch back to my own provider when I get back into the country. At this point I again have to put the Telenet SIM into another phone to force it out of roaming mode after which I can put it back into my Nexus S and it works again on my own provider.
I also tried with another Telenet SIM and had the exact same problem, so it is not a problem with the specific SIM itself. But when I stick in a non-Telenet SIM it does switch to roaming and non-roaming without problems. So it clearly is a combination of the ICS ROM with the Telenet SIM.
The only other thing I found is that the MNC code in apns-conf.xml is wrong for Telenet. It is listed as MNC=10 which used to be correct until sometime last year when everyone was issued a new SIM with MNC=05. But with a custom APN setup mobile data works fine.
If anyone has any idea how I could solve this issue, I would love to hear about it!
Cant Activate/Deactivate International Call Roaming on Nexus S.
Hi,
Same issue here, mine is Nexus S, running ICS 4.0.4, baseband version I9020XXKI1. I am not able to make calls in roaming. I spoke to my provider (O2 Germany) and they say that, I have to deactivate the lock (Lock to activate roaming). I haven't found any way to unlock this service. I have not tried what the OP has mentioned in his post (i.e., to put the sim into another phone and then try back in Nexus S). But I would like to know, how can I Activate or Deactivate the roaming lock ??
Thanks,
Cheers!!

The only roaming feature you can enable is for Data. This has no effect on roaming for normal phone usage.
You can change this setting under "System Settings" -> "More..." (under Wireless & Networks) -> "Mobile Networks"
Here you will find a "Data roaming" option, and possibly a "National data roaming" option
I have a Desire Z with Android 4.0.4 and Telenet for the cellphone also. I noticed I have to activate the romaing in Belgium to have the data connection which is strange as I'm in Belgium. Now I hear that they can be issues calling/sending sms abroad... I'll see when I'll be in Croatia.
I activated for the moment all the option (data roaming, national roaming) for the moment, nothing more strange than having the romaing activated and the 'R' in the network signal.
National Roaming seems to be needed on some phones, since the Telenet SIM swap last year to get a data connection in Belgium. On my own Nexus S phone I don't have the problem. But on my wife's SE Xperia Mini Pro (2011 model) with stock Android 2.3.4 it does have this issue.
The old sim used MNC=10, while the new SIM uses MNC=05 and it seems that some phones have some kind of issue with that.
MNC is the Mobile Network Code, which together with the MCC (Mobile Country Code) forms a identifier per provider.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Network_Code
I narrowed down the issue somewhat.
Basically my prior workaround that the SIM needed to be swapped to another phone to force the network to connect was false.
What actually needs to happen to force the phone to enter or exit roaming is to pull the battery.
Rebooting the phone, or shutting it down and rebooting (cold boot) does not make a difference, the battery needs to be pulled and then the phone will switch networks.
I found this by accident, because I was out of the country and it was as normal refusing to switch to roaming mode. Then the battery died and I connected power to the phone and booted it, and it suddenly connected to a foreign provider in roaming mode.
Getting back to Belgium, it again refused to switch back, so I verified it by just pulling out the battery and putting it back and the phone successfully was able to connect to Telenet again.
In other words, some component needs to be reset for it to successfully switch to roaming and back. This component does not get turned off when the phone is turned off, so the battery needs to be pulled.

[Q] Mobinil Egypt APN settings for Nexus 7 2013 LTE

I live in Egypt, My nexus 7 2013 LTE can identify Other GSM networks like Etisalat, send and recive data, meanwhile It shows no signal (no service message) with Mobinil network. I returned to the network provider, there's no problem with the service or the micro sim card.
I need to use Mobinil particularly, due to its wide coverage area.
Would entering APN settings manually for Mobinil would help? I need those APN settings for Mobinil also.
have anybody faced similar problem in any other country, how to treat it?
Thx
to address the problem more accurate:
My tablet identify the GSM network Mobinil, but it says (no service) and there is no signal.
any solutions?

trying to use a Japanese sim in on originally USA galaxy s5

I came to Japan after speaking0 to sprint about the possibility of using a Japanese SIM card in my phone. They said there'd be no problems I'll just have to unlock the phone before I left which was a completely doable thing by myself without their help. Now once I set up the Japanese sim I can make calls and text but have no access to LTE on my phone. Whenever I'm outside of Wi-Fi range I get a message saying mobile data connection could not be established LTE: ESM - 30 EMM - X I've called Sprint from Japan and tried to resolve the issue, they have walk me through the same steps three different times assuring me that the phone is unlocked on their end and never with a new result. Is there something that I missing it I need to address before I can connect for mobile data connection in Japan with this USA phone.
