Unbranding - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hi
Problably lots of people already asked this. Believe it or not, I searched the forum and i didnt sow that many information about it. I have a mda compact customized with t-mobile software. Basacly I want to take the T-mobile Stuff out, it dosnt even let me set up a gprs account for another operator.
Any help would be thankfull
Ivo

your best bet would be to get the device unlokcke, ( see the unlock tool in the general section of the forun for the unkocl all in one tool) and then upgrade the rom with that of an imate's or qtek's
hope that helps
Jim

Hi
thanks for quick reply.
I unlocked it already. Its just the t-mob crap i want to get rid off. where about can i donload the roms ?
thanks

found the solution ...
just upgraded it with an original firmware and the no_id file
thanks for the help
Ivo

...and where can i find the original firmware and the no_id file? :?:
I would like to have my Orange m500 clean too! Only with the applications i'd like to use.
Can this only be done with installing those extendedRoms? Its very difficult for me to find a clear tutorial about this.
regards

The ext-rom brands your magician. When you want to get rid of it just
- make a backup of calendar, contacts, tasks etc.
- hard-reset
- folow initialize procedure on screen
- soft-reset as soon as you get the standard WM background & before the customizatiin (=branding) starts.
You need to do this last step after every hard-reset unless you go for BIG Storage & completely wipe-out the ext-rom & get a storage folder of 27Mb instead of 7Mb.
Instructions for BS are to be found on the forum. No need to search for a special rom, you can do it with your current rom.
Cheers, M

thnx @ oltp
I'll give it a try

Any UK MDA T-Mobile upgraders here?

I have MDA on T_Mobile UK and would like to upgrade to the latest rom but am confused by so many posts and different lanuages.
Could anyone just tell me
1) How to back my rom up incase of problems
2) How to get the latest english rom with the patch for more memory
3) How to install it
4) How to put all the t-mobile settings back ie GPRS etc
TIA
I have an MDA Compact from T-Mobile UK and I upgraded with the Q-Tek 1.11 ROM doing the rounds. I forgot all about the ext rom, but after I upgraded I restored a full backup I had created using Sprite Backup. I asked on this forum if restoring the backup negated the ROM upgrade in any way, but no-one seemed to know. Anyway, all the T-Mobile customisation came back and there have been no problems since.
AS soon as I can get a proper T-Mobile ROM I will upgrade with this.
hi mate after you restored your backup did you still have the qtek rom on the phone?
Yes. I get the qtek splash screen when I reboot, and if I go to 'Device Information' I get this:
ROM version: 1.11.00 WWE
ROM date: 03/14/05
Radio version: 1.11.00
Protocol version: 1337.42
ExtROM version: 1.01.128 WWE
Hi
Thanks for the reply how did you do the update was there any error messages that need to be ignored?
Also going to use sprite backup later have you got any tips?
Thanks
Not really - the whole thing was completely painless for me. Just follow the instructions to the letter.
Sprite Backup is great - I get it to automatically backup my PDA to an SD card each night so I always have an up-to-date backup.
Is there a trial version of sprite backup of do I have to buy it?
What instructions did you follow would be good to just do the same as you as it work rather than me stuffing it up.
Thanks

cool whats your phone like now? is it any better?
My MDA Compact is really no different after the upgrade - it would be useful to know exactly what should be better. I still can't send files to it using bluetooth.
Last night I re-did the ROM upgrade but this time I reinstalled all my apps and only used Sprite to restore documents etc. rather than the whole system. I think this is a better way forward, although on Sprite's website there is a section on how to correctly use Sprite Backup to restore after a ROM upgrade - have a look at http://tinyurl.com/dhzrp
I downloaded a T-Mobile UK CAB file which adds back all the T-Mobile settings without the garish pink colour scemes.
The instructions I followed are in this thread http://tinyurl.com/863qt - as you work through you will get an idea of what to do. In there somewhere I seem to remember someone posted a simple guide.
I have a qtek s100 rom buymobiles.net or something like that.
I used the program to hack your own rom for Extended storage - made a safe backup first to keep on my PC, just in case, hacked the ROM, flashed it back on the phone and it worked fine. There are a number of error messages that come up, but they're all to be expected, but do follow the instructions carefully and they'll put your mind at ease.
After the flash, you get 27mb of "Storage" instead of the previous 7mb. I've got a 1gig card so it doesn't make much difference to me, but it's useful, and worth doing at the start so you don't have to re-install everything if you do bite the bullet later and apply the hacked ROM.
The hacked ROM will be a copy of your own ROM, so nothing will change ROMwise, however, I foolishly overlooked the fact that that space comes from somewhere, in this case it wipes out the intellidialer and some other gubbins. I had no backup of these, but forunately it's all stored away on the XDA developers FTP. Someone more informed than I can correct me, but I think the only files you really need to reinstall are the intellidialer. Also squirrel out the cab that contains settings for your network, orange, O2 etc (i haven't found these, they're on XDA developers somewhere bu i forgot where! Drop me a line if you find them...)
Once you've done that - well, your phone is pretty much as it originally was, but with a bit more storage for free. not a bad thing.
I would flash the ROM and then reinstall rather than doing a Sprite Backup/Restore, since the registry will be in a very different state after the ROM flash. However, i don't think it'll do any harm.
Sprite Backup is certainly worth getting hold of, and keep a copy of your backup on an SD card and your PC in case your phone gets 'half inched'.
Hope that helps.

Try this site for uk gprs network settings
http://www.buymobilephones.net/smartphone_setup.ihtml
Hope this is hat you were after???
also......pls could you tell me .....
what rom version did you use for your upgrade?
how does the phone benefit from upgrading, in terms of "real world" use?
can you upgrade the storage to the stated 20+mb without upgrading the rom version?
can you use any rom from any country from any model and network or do you have to find an exact match eg UK T mob MDA compact?
sorry for the million questions...i have been reading this site for days and have ended up dazed and confused....
riz- there's a tool that will modify any normal rom to the extended rom version.
Extended Rom provides you with a pseudo "Storage Card" called "Storage". if you check the control panel > system > memory > storage you should have about 7mb. Using the extended rom hack, you will hack 27mb, at pretty much no cost to you; this is very useful for storing backups, installation files, photos etc, or anything that you never want to lose, since this space is usable by you, but won't be lost if the phone runs out of battery at any time (unlike the phone's normal memory, that will be wiped if there's a prolonged loss of power). Although using a big SD card is an even better way to do this, it's useful to get teh 27mb for free if it's available i think.
To get the 27mb, find the tool in the upgrading magician forum to hack any rom to bigrom http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22582&highlight=anansky+rom.
Then, use the backup procedure described on that page to copy your own ROM from your phone to your pc. (you'll need an SD card and a card reader to do this). make a backup of that file
Then, use the prog to hack your own rom, then flash it back to your phone. Then your phone will have exactly the same rom as it had before, but better. You will lose some of the guff that was there before, but as i said perviously, this can all be downloaded from XDA forums.
So, I heartily recommended this just for the convenience of being able to store backups etc securely etc..

thanks for the very indepth instructions... still a bit scared to try it ...only got the phone yesterday....prob wait another hour or so...he he he

Are there any notable differences between your old rom version and the 1.11.?? I hear the 1.12 has been received with mixed reception…
thanks
Thanks for the cab settings!
Yeah, I guess you might as well patch directly to 1.12, although it's annoying that there's no update history etc to show what's been "improved"!.
I've just bitten the bullet and ordered the ebuyer SD wireless card (£26 delivered, 50% cheaper than ebay!). Hope it's ok, quite worried about it. But, when i did the Big Rom I had this in mind - although my main card is 1gig, obviously I'll have to pop it out to use the sd. so, I can keep essential apps in the 27mb, rather than feeling cramped in 7mb. Makes sense, no?

MDA on O2
Hi there,
I have just bought an unlocked MDA compact but can't get it to work on O2!
Can anyone help me?
Cheers,
Evan
I have an unlocked MDA connected to Tesco Mobile (actually uses the O2 network) and it works fine.
What exactly is the problem ?
Stu
Stu,
Thanks for your reply.
The MDA that I have seems to be unlocked as I have it on Orange at the moment, but, when I put my O2 sim card in it just says that there is no service!
Evan
The only thing that springs to mind is that Orange is on a different frequency to O2 so maybe you need to check the network preferences to make sure that it is set to automatic.

Few question about upgrading W2K3 to W2K5

i've heard that WM2003 in himalaya gadget can be uprade to WM2005, it's very interesting and i going to try the uprade, but i have some question about the upgrade, my question is:
1. what's the risk during upgrading? could my device occuring some permanent error?
2. what's the consequence of this? will my device working slower? or working faster?
3. if i don't satisfy with the WM2005 can i downgrade back to the WM2003 OS?
please help me by answering my question
Response:
1. the device may fail, but you can restart the whole process entering the device in bootloader mode and upgrading (happen to me once)
2.Your device will work Faster but sometimes (at boot sequence) will be slower.
that's the price you have to pay. Other thing is there is no MMS in WM5 (dont work for me) and some camera issues, that can be fixed. But is more eye-candy than the WM2003 or 2003SE.
3. If you aint satisfied you can go back to 2003SE just putting the device in bootloader mode and then making the upgrade using a WM2003 ROM (the nbf file)
One thing: Tofclock and Buzz (thanks guys!) are working hard to bring us one stable, better and faster WM5 ROM, so be quiet and wait like me
Hi guys,
I ve also heard that after you upgrade to Wm 5.0 the phone vibratin wont work, is that true?
what else then?
Thanks
Hi dickyw,
my vibration on my Himalaya works perfect...
Hi Guys,
Can anyone help another dumb newbie?
I upgraded my Himalaya to W2k5 OK from the O2 exe file, but I now want to downgrade to 2003 SE.
The folder I am trying to use to downgrade is WindowsMobile2003SE_XDA2_2.20.00CHS-translated.zip
Himaupgradeut.exe gives:- Error 120 Country ID error 1-1-8-n-1
HimaupgradeUt_noid.exe gives:- Error 103 ROM image file not found
XDA image tool gives me:-Unsupported file format error for NK.nbf
I have:-
Boot loader 1.06
CE image 1.72.00
Extended image 1.72.181
Radio image 1.17.00
Am I using the wrong tools, the wrong ROM or an incorrect procedure? I'm doing this for a friend so it's getting very embarassing. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, Mike
Another issue to aware of when upgrading to WM5 is that you need to also upgrade to Activesync 4.1 as 3.8 won't work any more. Given that AS can be very tempremental it may take some time to get the sync link back up and working to your satisfaction so if your data is cruitial to your work then backup, backup, backup and upgrade when you have a few days free to dedicate to ironing out any wrinkles.
Then also xbackup doesn't work in WM5 so you are left with options like buying the latest Sprint backup soiftware (now WM5 compatible) or relying upon your PC Outlook to be your "backup data" (NB I use the Outlook free "backup" util to back up my pst files on exiting Outlook as double insurance).
Regards - Mallow1
PS I upgraded and v glad I did. Had a few AS issues but eventuall got there (took a lot of reading of forums and As battles, but worth it in the end)
cnimike,
One assumes that you have unzipped the zip file first before trying to reflash? If not try that (say use winzip). Also try reading the wiki as a guide to what to do (seee link attop left of page).
You are also best o use the HimaupgradeUt_noid.exe as at least it avoids the first error (esle you'll have to edit the flash files first and recompile them which is straight forward but if you are a noobie it's a step that can be avoided by using the "...noid.exe") and if you haven't unzipped the said file doing that may well sort out your second error.
Get back to me if you need more help.

I would suggest getting a hold of Sin's merged version (details in signature) or XDA2JoJo's version. Simply flash the ROM and you are there. Elsewhere, SIN has set out the steps in the most detailed fashion you are going to see outside a software manufacturer's manual.

ERROR 011: EXECUTE REMOTE COMUNICATION PROGRAM ERROR

When I try to upgrade my i-mate JAM to a new special ROM from Kichen after a step this masage apears "Cannot execute the remote comunication program. Plese make sure that the USB/Serial cable is properly connected.
so guys plz help me urgent
Does the same error come up when you flash with a shipped-rom which hasn't been changed?
Does your device respond to any commands from the update program? If so, what happens on your device?
And what did you change in the rom?
As you probably guessed: I don't know an answer to this & i'm trying to figure out what is different in your setup compared to a regular update.
Regards, M
Thanx 2 reply
No dear every thing is OK When I try to update with shiped ROM it works 100% no problem. When I click in my computer the device is located and opens software installs nothing abnormal every thing is as usual, But when I try to update it with special ROM (got from Kichen that I like very much) the folowing masage appears
I guess that romkitchen isn't compatible with magician :-(. You can try to put in the GetDeviceDara.exe from a shipped-rom in the appropriate romkitchen folder, maybe it helps. Cause I love to see this working.
Good luck, M
Let me do it
The rom I got is for windows 2003 SE so I think it should work, now let me act your advise then i'll inform you.

The same problem i have
I try to update one of my friends i-mate JAM in a dfrent PC but the same problem I got. I think the rom is not compatible with JAM. Do you know another ROM to work on my JAM like available in Kitchen???
Well I haven't experimented with RomKitchen & don't know what you want to achieve with it. Ext-roms can be edited with bal666's tool too & there are loads of different (not edited) ext-roms @ the ftp.
& of course there's the BIG Storage hack, with which you trade in the ext-rom for an enlarged internal Storage folder.
Haven't seen anyone yet who really edited the CE image :-(
M
Yes I tried but...
I tried big ROM but in 3rd stage the folowing masage appears "card incilize error" When it tries to back up ROM on SD card. I have MMC not SD Now may be this is cause or somthing other. Have you updated your device with big storage rom & is it OK???
If so I'll try again
I downloaded the ROM form this site http://www.romkitchen.de I updated one of my friends PPC from this site's Rom its performance is 50% increased. but mine (JAM) is not going to update
I did it with a patched shipped-rom :!: Follow this link & I think you should be able to manage http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
RomKitchen is also on this forum, but I think it's for other devices. You can find it in the wiki.
Cheers, M
Ok let me do it
Thanks dear let me download and check it. One thing that my JAM is from i-mate & there is T-mobie ROM, but its for Magician so should I do it no problem? Will I be able to reload its shiped ROM that I have already. sorry for my broken english
Yes it's no problem to use another magician rom, use maupgradeut_noid.exe to bypass country id error. To flash your current shipped-rom back just follow the same procedure.
Be carefull to backup your current ext-rom cabs though, they do contain some operator specific settings for eg gprs, voicemail etc. You need to install some of them instead of the TMO ones present in the TMO 1.13WWE rom. You can use WinCE cabmanager (available on trial) to have a look inside the cabs & decide wich ones to use.
This is my list of the Dutch TMO 1.13WWE ext-rom cabs anyway:
BlueTooth patch:
BTHUSB_PATCH_AKU26.CAB

How do i convert Stock T-Mobile to O2 Equivalent

I have searched read and looked all over the board.
The problem very specific.
I have a stock MDA Compact with the T-Mobile Software installed.
I want to convert the phone to its O2 equivalent with all the bells and whistles.
Whats the best way to go about this?
Is there a UK O2 rom i can simply upgrade the unit with?
What extended Rom software do i install?
Thanks.
Backup your important data, hard reset your phone, and let the phone have its OS reinstalled. As you just finished the security (pin) setup page, soft reset your device (e.g. when it pop up a window saying that it will install etc etc software).
Get the O2 ROM from the xda-dev ftp, and install everything in the Exetended ROM, and you should have your O2 eqv.

I got the files from the ftp yes. Unfortunately the Extended rom is read only, how do i edit the attributes?
i can also install from an SD card, but i want to have these files permanently in the ext rom.
thanks again Hanmin
You should execute the O2 cabs from your sd-card. Or permanently flash you rom with the O2 rom to get them in your ext-rom. The ext-rom is read only & can only be written by flashing your rom or turning it into BIG Storage. To flash your rom to O2 you need MAUgradeUT_noid & the description from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
Regards, M
Doh, of course how could i forget, the very definition of ROM, read only.
Well i executed the Autorun from the SD Card, but its installed all the T-Mobile stuff again, (which still resides on the ROM).
I would execute the cabs individually from the sd but im not sure which are meant to be installed for my network.
After a few errors running the upgrade previously your instructions have now worked.
albeit i had to put the phone in bootloader mode after step 5 and before step 6

How do i go about this? ( ie Keep the ext_rom )
I gather its the same as flashing a big storage ROM to the phone excepts the nbf will have the O2 files i want instead?
Thank you all for your time

It's only possible if you find a dumped rom or a shipped-rom which is the version as the one you had before. Maybe your provider has a shipped-rom on its web-site? Or take a look at the ftp and maybe you're lucky to find one. If you find a shipped-rom it's easy, connect via usb & start the exe file. If you've got a dumped rom you need to change the header of the downloaded with your own device's header, write everything to sd & have the bootloader update the rom.

The have the autorun starting files on sd, you need to edit it a little. It got hard-coded path & filenames and some instructions to prevent userinput (thus locking the keys & keyboard).

Now you got me puzzled. Do you want the O2 CE-rom or just the ext-rom & keep the TMO network settings? Cause the CE-rom isn't much different for all providers, it's the ext-rom that does the customizing & changes the network settings.
So if you want an O2 ext-rom with TMO network settings I suggest you first write down your TMO settings for gprs, voicemail, mms & sms & then flash it to O2. You might even try to update the ext-rom only. It's possible to update to radio by supplying the radio.nbf only to the romupdateso I think it's possible to update the ext-rom by itself too. Can't remember the nbf name, but nk.nbf is your CE-rom & that makes only one left, isn't it.
You can use WinCECabmanager (10 trial executions) to see what's in all those cab-files.
Good luck to all of you, M
I think frantyk meant that he wants to keep the original t-mobile (mda compact) ROM while installing the customization (ext rom), such that the 'OS' is relatively the same while having O2 stuff in it.
Anyway, I think if you downloaded the correct O2 ext rom, you can install everything one-by-one manually, it shouldn't give any conflict. I'm not sure why, when you run Autorun, it install t-mobile stuff, probably the autorun is pointing to the ext rom.
You can unlock the the wizard ext rom unlocking cab, delete everything in your ext rom (MAKE A BACKUP FIRST), and copy the O2 stuff in. You should able to 'lock' the ext rom back in place. Then hard reset your device, you should have everything, including O2 stuff installed. I unlocked my ext rom before, but I can't remember if this is the one I used. --- IMPORTANT --- I've unlocked my ext rom with this cab before, but my device is a HTC Charmer, which is very compatible with Wizard. I'm NOT SURE IF IT WORKS ON MAGICIAN. You may want to look around the forum to find a ext unlocker for Magician, just to be safe.
The Magician ext-rom can't be unlocked, only flashed or turned into BIG Storage. Though I think you can flash the ext-rom only, the safest way it to flash the whole rom with an O2 shipped-rom. This will be the only way to get the correct ext-rom being executed after a hard-reset. Indeed the autorun contains a path & is unusable from sd without changes.
BTW not many people want the O2 stuff, I guess it's about network settings only. Which are on the web too, can't remember where :-(
M
What i want is the Standard CE software (ie no branding what so ever) which i think i have achieved with in flashing the phone with Shipped ROM WWE_11300_550_11200 - although it has the Qtek boot logo.
Im also using some of the Cabs from Extended Rom O2Mini_WWE_1.11.922
Why does this Ext_Rom not have and network auto config for O2 UK? Where can i get and Auto config cab for UK O2?
I want to use the phone mainly with an O2 Sim card, so i need al the O2 settings for GPRS and that, 2nd priority is having the T-Mobile GPRS settings cab for when i occasionally change chips but this is less essential that the O2 settings.
What does WWE stand for? My guess was XXEuropean?
Thanks
OK, unbranded CE is either the mentioned QTEK or any BIG Storage rom. Don't worry about the splash that can changed very easily.
WWE means World Wide English.
The network settings can be found here http://www.cctvsafe.com/support/phone_settings.htm

Dopod and re-flashing help please!!

Hi, I have 3 questions:
1) I've looked around a lot, but can't seem to catch hold of a chinese language for my vox...Its called Dopod rom right?? Where can I get the files and instructions??
2) Does a ROM (when dumped) contain absolutely everything that is on the phone and if flashed on another phone will be a "duplicate" of original phone??
3) I've found the wiki on how to dump my rom, but how would I be able to re-flash it onto another phone??
Thanks guys
Wow somebody who actually read the Wiki before posting - nice
1.It's on the ftp. But look at the stuff that is written in the Wiki, about no Wifi and so on.
2.Nope it isn't it's only the operating system and all the software that comes with it! So no contacts or appointments or other files you put on. When you do a hard reset, you would see what all comes with the ROM! (but don't do it, it'll wipe all your data)!
3.You would have to put it into the kitchen and try to cook a new ROM out of the dump, but look around on the ftp first, there are a lot of shipped ROMs, yours is probably there too!
I can't seem to locate the Dopod wiki... But are there ANY ROMs that can handle chinese text without sacrificing the wifi function??
In terms of the shipped ROMs folder - I couldnt find my one and besides, I'd like to have one with all my programs on. So where can I find easy to follow (I'm a newbie on all this) instructions on cooking and creating a ROM??
(Is this thread the right one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337066 ) ???
Thanks for your help
