USING STORAGE CARD AS MEMORY

Hey. I'm really new to this forum.. and please excuse me if i'm being ignorant at any time. Just bought a new XDAii Mini and realised that the memory is very less which makes the phone work very slow at time specially if multiple programs are running. So since the memory is only around 60mb or so... can't we utilize the space from our storage memory to work as memory ... basically.. can't the phone use storage memory to work faster... pls advice.
tried searching this forum for answers.. but i gave up.. any help would be appriciated. thanks.
if you've already installed programs i advise a soft reset.
-optionally install the big rom hack to get an extra 20mb of "storage" memory.
-then find a program called cabinstl to re-install all your programs to storage card.
-optionally use a program called memmaid to relocate various large dlls (support files) to storage or storage card.
v
After vijay advise, read this thread and I gurantee U could get at least 35mb free memory space on startup
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=16785
using MM to move the dll files to storage card, how much memory will that get you and also if hard reset, the dll will be back to main memory, correct?. Thanks

Confused... not enough space to install apps with Tofclock's AKU3.2 3.35a

Ok I'm totally confused so I hope someone can help me!....
Yesterday I finally decided to upgrade to WM2005. I tested a couple of different
ROMs and finally settled on Tofclock's AKU3.2 3.35a which was configured with :
64 MB RAM - 32 MB Page pool - 32 MB Ramdisk
My memory configuration appears as :
Storage Total: 14.54MB
Program Total: 61.23MB
Everything was working fine until I try to install a large app like Tomtom which
insists on installing some bits on the device and my 14.5MB of storage disappears and the installer hangs due to running out of space.
What I'm confused about is where this 14.54MB resides and why it isn't bigger.
I don't really understand the need for this Ramdisk stuff. Can I not just ditch the Ramdisk and install important apps to the device when they won't install to my SD card?
If I had no ramdisk wouldn't the applications I install to the device be persistent anyways?
So far I have installed Wizbar 2 and TomTom to the Ramdisk and I have already run out of space in the device storage memory.
Many thanks,
Laxity.
win2005 dont use ram for storage or programs or anything
it use flash
on 2003 it only used ram for storage and programs and application mem
and you had a slider to deside how much was for mem and how much for programs/data
so a basic 2005 rom give you all the 128MB as application mem
and only the 32MB in \Storage for everything else
ramdisk mean that the program make fake storage out of application mem
and let you install programs and data on it
I have installed the TofClock's ROM(exactly likethe one you installed too). I didnt have speed and storage problems because i installed ALL the applications to the "\RAMdisk".
your storage memory is for the \device directory like some \windows files and \My Documents.
install all your progs in the RAMdisk.
this is so far on of the coolest ROMs, i've been running on this for 4 days now.
BUT i have a big problem with this ROM: it shuts down at 24% level battery.

Cooked Version without Flashdisk or Storage

Hi!
Is there any cooked version without Flash Disk or Storage so that the major memory can be made available for programs. What I understand that major memory area for Programs can help a lot.
Anybody can guide on this or can help on how to cook a ROM without a Flash Disk / Storage area.
Regards,
Haque
It's already been done.
Try Cotulla ROM.
And please read the first post by Cotulla VERY carefully.

Hi, It's for a G3 device whereas I have O2 Xda Exec G4 device. I'll appreciate if anybody can guide me on to what can be deleted from an available kitchen like Tomal's or any other's to achieve a bare minimum state to run the mobile without the Flashdisk or Storage area.
Looking forward to be helped on this.

Just to qualify that you don't loose any of your program memory to storage or flash disk. i.e., if you get a ROM without storage/flashdisk, you won't have more program memory. The most you can expect on 64MB device is around 30MB free program. By getting vanilla version, this would only increase available space on flash disk (if you have one) - which is determined by the ROM builder. The xtra storage space is also only available as just that.
Best that I can see is luca16thebig's 1.4.5 vanilla with 33.28MB free program memory.

Thanx! But the problem with the Luca16thebig's 1.4.5 vanilla is that upon closing the programs it actually does not close the programs and these are visible in Task Manager. I have to manually close the programs from Task Manager. Second, the flash disk size is 22MB approximately, whereas I wanted a version without Flash Disk or Storage and the free available memory should be available for Programs or a portion of that for the Storage. See if you or anybody can guide me on this.

WM6 will minimise programs by default. Install WkTask. This is what is used in other ROMs to close programs and give the functionality you are looking for.

As I said this is incorrect. The 'free memory' will not be available for Programs. If you don't have a Flash Disk or Storage, that memory is simply then not used and not available. Both the Flash Disk and Storage make use of memory that you cannot normally access.

Hi!, I flashed my O2 XDA EXEC with the WM5 shipped ROM and then upgraded to WM6 Shipped version. I got a Storage area with around 10-12MB space. Upon flashing it to Tomal's WM61, my O2 Xda Exec start showing Flash Disk along with the Storage area. Thus I had around 22MB storage area in the phone apart from the main storage and Program Memory. I don't know if some of this space can be freed to make more room for Memory than the mere storage space. I have gone through the post you pointed out and I had a feeling that the freed space can only be utilized for the storage area and not for the Program Memory.
I am planning to get me O2 Xda Exec's RAM upgraded and hope that will resolve the memory issue.

Haque

you're right, it cannot be used as program memory but as mere storage, at least for now. upgrading your ram will do the trick... . regards

Hi! I was lucky to get hold of a friend, who actually runs a mobile repair workshop, to upgrade the RAM of my O2 Xda Exec by harvesting the RAM from Blue Angel. Now my mobile is with 128MB RAM. The process was hardly a 30 minutes job - removing the two 64MB Memory chips from Blue Angel and replacing the 32MB Memory chips on O2 Xda Exec and then shorting the pins as stated in Uni Memory Upgrade article.
I just wanted to know how much of the storage can be freed from the cooked vanilla or regular version and how?

Ya its not possible to allocate ram from another storage .... it was possible in wm2003SE . and universal actually shipped with wm5 so there is no chance to do that. unlike some devices which shipped with 2003, there are people who has extracted the drivers and has it working, see the following post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=490948
.... the only option for uni owners is to change the chip...
cheers
