Magician or Wizard - General Topics

I'm going to replace my sony T610 and palm E2 with one single device. Either the HTC Magician (128mb) or Wizard. : D
On the Wizard I like the wifi, keyboard, edge, not sure about mobile 5. On the Magician I like the smaller form factor, speed, standard sd card, price.
I read in mobile review.com that the performance is not so top with the TI processor turning at 200mhz instead of 416mhz of the Magician.

So whats your honest opinion, any regrets, are the benchmark tests correct, whats your real life experiences? or too early to tell...........

HTC Wizard

In case you missed PocketPCThoughts!
Pocket PC Italia has just revealed a bit of information on the HTC Wizard. Although it is subject to change, here's the buzz: Windows Mobile 5.0, GSM/GPRS (with EDGE) - Quad-Band 850/900/1800/1900MHz, a Texas Instruments OMAP 850 processor (interesting choice?), 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, a 2.8" QVGA display, Bluetooth, 802.11b Wi-Fi (rejecting earlier reports of this device having 802.11g), IR, a 2.1MP integrated camera with Flash LED, dual speakers, a QWERTY keyboard, mini-USB, and a miniSD slot. Here's a Google translation if you need it.
Yeah, it looks kinda fake, and I personally think it looks so IPAQ, but I don't care as long as it is an HTC device...
What do you guys think about it in case it's in fact true?
Yeah, it looks a bit fake, but the concept with the landscape keyboard is cool! I always miss my Keyboard while surfing in landscape mode. Landscape Keyboards have the advantage of leaving more space for the keys. I'd like to see it in this way.
But i've read of two devices: Wizard (without keyboard) and Galaxy (with keyboard).
no 3g or video conference though :/
nice that it have a blizt but it's bound to be a stealer of minuts
Nice specs, BUT:
-Mini-SD? What? Why? This doesn't make any sense. Why not SDIO?
- TI OMAP 850? That thing runs on 200 MHz. So then we have a device with integrated Wifi, but no way Skype can run on 200 MHz.
Seems HTC made a little error in the specs, hope they correct this and turn out a killer device.
BTW: of course no 3G, or the Universal would be in trouble in terms of sales. If this Wizard/Galaxy had 3G as well, what would there be for the Universal to compete on? Bigger, more expensive, but with the same specs and a less MP camera?
faster cpu and sdio and more ram and bigger screen
this device was ment to be a replacement for magic to limit the stuff to make it small
and it's not like other phone companies ever narrowed their range so they only had one 3g device
there are other things to change between devices then the network they are using like the specs you dont care for....
Are you guys sure there's no 3G? Note the camera lens upfront the device.. Only 3G phones have that..
the specs say EDGE
which is pretty much 2.5G
have yet to see any phones supporting both EDGE and 3g
and if it did i guess they would state it as specs
its looks ok, but it better have a fast processor, and a sdio slot? else it may be useless to me.
I found this one as the htc wizard :
The rumor that broke about this last week wasn’t particularly reliable, so we exercised an unusual amount of restraint (for us at least, since we are total gossip hounds) and didn’t publish anything, but a pic and some plausible details have surfaced on Howard Forums about the HTC Wizard. This one is supposed to be HTC’s new smallish Pocket PC Phone that’s about the same size as the HTC Magician/i-mate JAM/XDA II mini and have quad-band GSM, EDGE, 802.11g, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, and a QVGA quality, 320 x 240 pixel LCD screen. Will supposedly be out in Q3 of this year, possibly OEM’d by HP.

Check out Nokia 6630 and 6680 They are 3G as well as EDGE supported....
It looks yucky....I'm not gonna be swayed from my Universal!!!!

Any feedback yet on Eten M600

From all the specs I read, it looks like a great piece of equipment:
- quad-band (useful for me)
- 802.11 b/g (at last!!!). Wonder if WPA/WPA2 is supported, and PSK and/or 802.1x
-full-size SDIO
- Size looks to be between Magician and Himalaya (good enough for me!)
- BT 1.2 supported
- WM5.0...
So if anyone has anything to say about Eten in general and on the M600 in particular, I'd be glad to hear.
Cheers,
Hal

i was looking at one of these too. This looks like one sexxy handset!
not 4 me.
crappy samsung cpu, 64mb ram and useless 802.11g(it will take tons of energy if used)...
Qtek 2020i still the best.

I played with an Eten at Modaco.
Nice device, but fairly plasticy, unlike the aluminium sheathed godliness of HTC's stuff.
Nice to have the competition though. However, If i was going for a non HTC, I'd wait for the Atom = perkier.

Hal,
Do you know where this product can be purchased with a new abbonement in France?
mogwai
As an owner of imate JAM and after reading all that about the warranty on blue angel and stuff I am going forward and I ll be ordering an ETEN M600 this monday morning!
At least it has full size SD and it supports SDIO!!!!
As for the quality mentioned above nothing can be worse than the firming on JAM. Have you seen the battery cover of the JAM???? How many of you have a jam that its colour didn't came off? Mine is becoming grey after the silver has gone in the back!
Anyway as for the samsung processor just think that K-JAM has the 200MHz version of it while M600 has the 400MHz one and I ve seen some benchmarks on the net showing clearly that tha 400MHz Samsung is faster in many tests than the Intel 416MHz located inside my JAM. At least msmobiles in their recent review say that skype works flawless something I never managed to see on my JAM or my friend's PDA2k.
So I will make a small review as soon as I lay my hands on it sometime after 5th of December.
And admins please create an area for ETEN users too.
I've seen the E-ten m500 (300 MHz Samsung CPU) in action and must say that I was really impressed.
Scrolling of navigation cards (Navigon Mobile Navigator 5.1) almost in real-time.
You'll need at least 416/520 MHz Intel CPU to achieve same results.
Don't know about battery life though.
Sascha
Sabo M500 has exactly the same processor with M600 and its clocked at 400MHz. I also saw an M500 and it was really fast and smoother than my JAM. Let me get my hands on M600 and I will let you all know how good it is!
Too bad there is no keyboard!!
The missing keyboard is one of the advantages of my M600 for me!
M600 in FR and lack of keyboard
Ok, I confess, I couldn't hold it anymore: I bought a K-Jam WWE while in Dubai last week.
First impression: not slower than BA/HIMA running WM5 (I have both - BA has dead screen now...).
It is the right size for me.
I tend to hate the keyboards, having been on Palm since 1995... The BA keyboard was laughable! But the on on K-Jam is real cool.
Keep feedback on M600 pouring please, I still find it's a nice piece of equipment!
My 2c,
Hal.

M500 has a 400mhz cpu
I had (still have, in fact) a Magician (JAM) till about 3 days back when after careful comparison of the various alternatives available (I wanted a WiFi pocket pc phone that was stable and fast) I bought the Eten M600.
Compared to my friends K-JAMs and JAMINs this one is really stable and fast. I can skype away happily on the M600 while my friends struggle to start up skype on their JAMINs. I make calls on Skype while they listen to garbage trying to make one.
Eten rocks, and at a price that $150 cheaper (including a free 1GB SD Card) than the JAMIN its too good a deal to ignore. @ HTC - competition has arrived, and in style!

Which is better - Alpine or Wizard?

I am thinking about replacing the Alpine with Wizard for two reasons:
1. The Alpine camera is a complete abortion
2. The Wizard is smaller but has all the funtionality of the Alpine
I do have one major concern though - the CPU speed on the Wizard is only 200Mhz, compared to the Alpine which is 520Mhz. I am aware that the processors are different designs, so clock speed comparisons are not entirely relevant. I have found on the wiki pages a benchmark comparision between Wizard and Magician, but not between Alpine and Wizard. Can anyone offer a comparison?
Also, I would be interested in any comments on the Wizard's camera quality, or perhaps some sample pictures so I can see if HTC have done a better job on the Wizard.
cheers
cameras in all the HTCs are pretty bleh, to be honest. Try here for a review with pictures:
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-wizard-en.shtml
If you want a mobile phone that's also a decent camera, try the Sony/Ericsson K750i, W800i, W900i, or the Nokia N90 series, or... I forget, there's a motorola that takes decent pictures as well anyway

Htc Touch Cruise Unavailable-uncertainty About The Gps Chip

Hi
I was also waiting since 2-3 weeks the new HTC TC, I was intersested because it had everything I wanted (except a SIRF Star III chipset).
I'm asking myself now if I will not buy instead the new ETEN Glofiish X 800 who except a 2MPixels camera (in place of a 3 MPixel for the HTC TC) has not only a better GPS receiver (Sirf starIII) but also a much better screen (VGA 640x480 in place of QVGA 320X240) , a faster processor 500 MHz for the Eten vs 400 MHZ for the HTC and a better battery 1530 mAh vs 1350 mAh for the HTC.
And it seems that the ETEN will also be cheaper than the Touch Cruise....
What do you think ? ETEN GLOFIISH X800 or HTC TC ..? Wait or not wait ?
Christian

With respect to SIRF Star III, if you use Tomtom it doesn't support the additional capabilities of the chip (I contacted Tomtom for this), besides, the HTC Cruise got the fix much faster then with my MIO A201 wich has a SIRF Star III chipset. I compared these two PDA's to figure out the diferences with respect to navigation using Tomtom.
Although the X500 has a higher clock processor, it is actually much slower than the Kaiser/Polaris because it doesn't have a dedicated gfx processor - so all gfx processing (and don't forget its 640x480) has to be done by the main CPU which makes even simple things like scrolling very slow.

Kaiser and Polaris DO have a GFX processor but they DON'T have drivers for it at the moment....
So they won't be any faster until we can get those drivers.
Compared to my SIRF Star III gps receiver the Cruise is just as good. Get's a faster fix and has just as many satelites. No major differences there, so there is nothing for you to worry in that department.
The X800 is a nice device as well. It's also VGA which could be something you like where the cruise is qvga.
But! from what I've read it feels kinda slow. Mainly because of the VGA resolution and that there is only 64mb RAM in the device. There where the cruise has 128mb ram.
Also for the future the gfx processing might be something to consider. There where the Cruise could get support for it at some point the X800 will never get that. Take into consideration that it's VGA instead of qvga ánd only has 64mb RAM I think the Cruise is the better choice here.
At least that was my conclusion when I was thinking about getting the X800 or the Cruise. In the end I was 100% sure to get the Cruise and so far it hasn't let me down as well. I'm quite happy with it, only hoping on some better video driver support.

After long struggle with myself I decided not to buy any Eten (considered X500+, X800 and M800) due to small amount of available memory.
So I wanted iMate Ultimate 9502, but it seems not available in Europe.
Therefore, since I need GPS, HTC TC, even if it's QVGA... TyTN II is simply too heavy... and I'm not sure I need keyboard.

Don't be confused (or to confuse others) about video drivers and gfx drivers.
Kaiser and Polaris don't have proper video drivers (DirectX), but the dedicated gfx processor does function correctly for 2D acceleration.
And the X800 is very slow.

SLOW¡¡¡????
X800 IS THE SLOWEST PDA I HAVE USED, YOU MUST DO A SOFR RESET EACH 2 HOURS TO USE IT NORMALLY...

Got bored with my Kaiser and sold it....now what?

Who can recommend a good WM phone that is slimmer and lighter than the Kaiser?
Need the same CPU speed or quicker.
GPS not necessary.
3G not necessary.
Slideout keyboard optional.
Same size screen or bigger is a plus.
htc touch dual is the one you want. or touch cruise
Does it have to be a windows mobile device? The Nokia N95 8GB is really nice.
Doesn't have to be but I use a fair number of WM apps.

He said same speed or faster.
N95 uses a slower cpu (TI OMAP 2420 with only 330 Mhz).
The N95 is smaler but thicker than the Kaiser (21 mm vs 19 mm).
TDO
I'm still looking for something with a bigger screen. Haven't gotten rid of mine yet, but the move to smaller screens is just the opposite of what I have been looking for.
Good Luck with your search

It's better NOT to compare the 2420 to the Qualcomm 400 Mhz. The former is WAY faster than the latter - as has always been the case with TI's CPU's compared to CPU's running at the same speed.
Also see my chipset/CPU-related posts, where I've elaborated on all these issues.

Symbian S60v3fp1 has a lot of functionality built-in only accessible via third-party apps on WinMo. For example, I only needed to install Opera Mini and an MP3 call recorder on my N95 and I can already fully use it for my purposes. No tweakings, no day-long installing needed.
Specifically, what do you need?

Better not - before the Qualcomm drivers are fixed. Wait for the V900, the X1 or the MS808. Or, if Symbian isn't a problem, get either the Nokia N95-1, the N95 8GB or the N82 (they have cons and pros compared to the other so it's pretty hard to choose from them. I'd, personally, go for the N95-1).

Hi,
I'm also bored with my Kaiser, to be honest i'm just sick of it crashing, crappy video drivers etc. I'm waiting for this to be released, i've always had Sony Ericssons and never had any major problems.
