I want to make my own phone tones and wondered.... - General Topics

1. What file types does the phone support
2. Where is it best to store them so that when I want to change my ring tone all available tones appear on the selection drop down list
3. Is there an editing tool I can use to create my own ring tones from the music files I have on my storage card
4. The available sounds to associate with receiving an SMS are not the same as those for the phone, why? and how can I add to them

1 as ring tones you can use wav, mid and wma
2 \windows\rings
3 i would do it on the pc doubt that there are many good audio editing programs for pocketpcs
4 sms and other nonring tone notifications only support wav and should display them in the dropdown list if places in \windows\

Thanks for all the help.
Obvious one, can I use any other folders such as those on my SD card
Fianlly, before I start putting files into the folder...I have just checked my Windows\Rings folder and it does not show any of the ringtones that appear in the listbox currently?
ie
fantasy
jig
mystic
The only one that appears is 02 phone.

you can if you edit the redestry but when the pda is off the sd is off and the gsm is on so when it rings it cant use any tones on your sd card

Thank You for the excellent advice.

Text Message Alerts

I added some ringtones to my phone and I can't assign them to text messages. The songs only appear under incoming calls. How do I get them to show up under text messages and e-mail alerts and stuff like that?

Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications>Notifications>Event>Messaging: New text message - then pick your sound (any ringtone that is in \Windows should show up)
Edit: Also any ringtone in \Storage Card\My Documents shows up for me also.
It doesn't show up under there...they only show up under incoming calls.
You need to store the ring tone in the \windows directory on your phone.
what format are the tones you put on?
The ringtones are in .mp3 format. I put them under /windows in the rings folder and they still do not show up.

Try putting them in \APPLICATION DATA\SOUNDS
This is where I have mine, and they always show up in the default lists that WM5 reads from.
I'm running WM6 and I have an AppData folder (no Application Data Folder) but there isn't a sounds folder in there. I tried making one but that didn't work either.
Anyone have an answer for this? It's bugging me pretty bad that I can't have my own text message alerts.
I just copied a SMALL mp3 file into the Windows directory in my Hermes, it WORKS, it allows me to choose the file for a text message alert. I just did it with a bigger file and it worked also (3 MB mp3 file).
What phone are you using? wm6 from who? Which rom?

Put it in your windows folder (on your phone)
does it have to be wav?
actually, i think it can be anywhere on the phone..i have mines on my Storage Card. and i see it in the drop down menu when i try and edit the ringtones.
2 place you can put the file: windows or root of memory card.
need not be in wav, mp3 also can
do not put it on your phone. put it in the root of your storage card. you'll be good to go.
or i think in a my documents folder on storage card. just so the root of storage card doesnt get all cluttery
but thats only for ringtones. for like text notifications it has to go into \windows
In the past, I've been putting them in \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones
I have a Fuze, I've tried putting the MP3 into the \Windows, \Windows\Rings, \Application Data, the root of the storage card to no avail. I still can not make the MP3 that I want as the tone for when I receive a new text message. Now, from what I've read on here I should be able to put it in any one of those spots and then go to start>settings>sounds & notifications and choose "Event" as "Messaging: New Text message" and the MP3 should then appear in the drop down box right? Wrong. I can however choose it as a ring tone for incoming calls, which I do not want.
Can anyone show me how to do this correctly or point me in the right direction? I've searched and read, but I still can't get it to work correctly.
It's only been 12hrs, but thought I'd bump this. For the morning guys.
I did this by converting the .mp3 files to .wma and placing them in the Windows folder. After a phone reset, I selected the new tones for Incoming Call and New Text Message alert.
I usually convert them to .wav files then load it to the storage card, shows up in the list with no problem.
The reason I put my tone/ring files directly into the Windows folder is that I read somewhere in the forums that placing the ringtone file on the storage card may contribute a delayed ring (for incoming calls) as the dialer accesses the ringtone from storage - which is what I had been experiencing.
After following that advice (and other tips supplied in the forum), I have notice a reduced delay between the first evidences of an incoming call and the start of ringing.
try putting them here:
application data\sounds
no need for a reset.
I do mines in this folder.
My Device > My Documents > My Ringtones
So I guess the problem is that for some reason my phone didn't recognize the 2 Mp3 files that I was trying to use and I couldn't convert them to WMA on my laptop. I found them as WMA (thank you google), put them in \Application Data\Sounds and it works flawlessly now. Thanks for the help.

Create folders in your sdcard named "alerts" "notifications" and "ringtones".

Palm Treo Pro notification customizations

I recently ditched my Treo Pro for a Fuze, couldn't get around that 320x320 screen anymore.
One thing I miss, though, is that the Treo could assign separate MP3 ring tones to email versus texts or SMS, and could differentiate between Known (in Contacts) callers and unknown and give them separate ringtones. My Fuze doesn't appear to do this. I can assign separate sounds to emails, but none of my custom MP3 appear in the list. There isn't selection for Known callers at all.
I tried searching for custom cabs on the Treo, but nothing in the obvious places. Isn't there supposed to be a text file listing where the programs to install are so that manufacturer/provider customizations can run after a hard reset? Where would that be located? I want to see if the Palm customizations will work on another device.
thanks for any help.
The Mp3s need to be located in My Device\My Documents\My Ringtones
They will then appear in all the selections
And if memory is an issue, and want to use the memory card, create a folder called
My Ringtones on the memory card, and put em there...
That's actually where I keep the MP3s, still no dice for email notification. All the default ringers are there, none of my customs.
I use almost every one of the same customs from the same folder for contact ringtones and they work.
I miss HAL telling me there's a message for me....
What about separate ringtones for Known versus unknown callers? I just booted up the Treo again to make sure I wasn't nuts and it can definitely do that.

Anyone knows how to change sms tone? I have tried to change but it still the default sms tone.

Welcome to forums,
Insert your desired new ringtone into windows main memory, or windows/my ringtones, or SD card/my ringotnes then select it from the list
Format normally has to be mp3
Good luck and enjoy!
