Orange SPV M500 critical memory issue - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hi All,
Got my wife an SPV M500 to replace her old Sendo X smartphone but she is getting increasingly annoyed at it's seeming inability to mange it's own memory.
What seems to happen is that the device gets slower & slower & then pops up with 'critical memory - delete some files' but you can't beccause it doesn't respond & she has to soft-reset it!
Why doesn't this device close unused programs etc. when they are not needed instead of seemingly continuing to use memory until it runs out - I can't believe that it was designed like that!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - she's on the verge of returning it!

Try a task manager.
e.g. magic button for free

Many thx, will give it a go!

switching operator ROM without changing operator

Hi guys,
I am currently using the orange spv m500, I upgraded radio rom to 1.13 and the last orange update for the 1.12 rom.
What will happen if I choose a rom from another operator (e.g. tmob)? How do I get the setttings from my current provider back (GPRS, MMS) ? (only settings! not interested in all the programs, I will reinstall all necessary software manually; it's still windows :? )
Will there be any software installed from the rom of another operator? if so, will this prevent to set my orange settings back?
Thanks!
By the way, why are there barely any custom orange roms?
No problem at all, just backup your current rom. Flash with the new rom, prevent ext-rom from starting or go directly for BIG Storage & apply the setting cabs for gprs etc.
Cheers, M
Ps. Dutch how to's are available.
which cabs from external storage
great, big storage it probably is! Hoping the new rom will also work with the extended bluetooth stack from this forum.
besides that, it gives me the opportunity to get rid of the horrible fonix voice dailing app.....completely useless with a long contact list....
fonix voice dail: "would you like to update your contacts?" NO! "please speak more clearly"...NOOOOOOO! (....people in the bus staring at you....     )
anyway, does anyone know which cabs from the external storage are absolutely necessary for orange?
The one thing you really need is the Orange network settings. Get a copy of WinCE CabManager (>10 trial executions) to view what's inside your Orange cabfiles. Usually the name says it all. Then after an upgrade you can easily decide what to load & what not.
Besides on BIG Storage a hard-reset its all it takes to get rid of an unwanted Orange program. So make a list of things you wanna keep, execute the ext-rom cabs on look what it gives you. Gambled wrong? Hard-reset & start again, doesn't take so much time as long as you don't install other third-party apps during this process.
Cheers, M

Quick way to speed up your wm5/6

Hi guys,
My Jasjam (Hermes) has loads of apps installed. (My 2GB SD card is full) - almost every app you can think of!
It has really caused performance issues having so many applications installed, after I restarted it, it would take a few seconds to display programs once Windows button pressed. (same with settings this would take 4 seconds first time after restart)
I tried all reg speed modifications, memmaid/pocket mechanic, many restarts etc, not much difference.
Then I backed it up, (spb backup) done a hard reset, (the phone was then lightning fast without anything installed) restored the backup and now so much faster and more responsive - I dont know why but this worked.
I'm very happy now and thought I would share this with you as I have been searching the internet for the last few weeks for a solution.
Well 150 people have read this, has anyone tired it and got similar results???
To me it is like I upgraded from a Pentium 300mhz to a Pentium IV 3GHZ over night!!!
i doubt many people have that many apps installed in the first place
It's quite normal - OS have to "read" every icon from every executable or dll. As workaround try make some folders in Windos\menu start like "multimedia", "connectivity" etc. and move some shortcuts into them. U can also use program like Wisbar Advance that can overide start manu and cash icons - in Your case it will eat some serious amount of RAM.
In my case using backup after HR always makes my device slower. It was the same when using Sprite Backup and SBP Backup.

Palm Treo 500v - Can you turn off or replace the Vodafone skin?

Hi there,
does anyone know if you can turn off or replace the Vodafone Skin on the Treo 500v. I'm sure they were thinking it made it easier to navigate, but it's overkill and clunky. there's no way that I've discover so far to get to the normal Windows Smartphone interface.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Can you turn off or replace the Vodafone skin?
i am on for that too please help us to close this menu system or if any one has some kind of rom update to upgrade to the palm rom
it would be the best
thanks
That's what I'm dreaming about too! It's ridiculous to have a wm device without being able to use wm menu/UI. The bad thing, apart from being uncomfortable, it creates 2 extra processes in memory!
Perhaps it's possible to switch the Voda UI off with some registry edit; I've been looking for the key(s) responsible but didn't succeed... Otherwise the device is really good, what a pity.
It'd be nice if some guru could help us.
hi guys,
i'm into the device despite its shotcomings, (very slow, can't allocate web key) its a fresh approach to WM device's and hopefully will be supported with firmware updates.
any tips on speeding up the device would be appreciated
mac
hi remacca, have you tried this?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE
change limit from 16384 to 32768
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\STORAGEMANAGER\FATFS
change cachesize to 4096
Also, killing the tasks/processes after using applications helps to maintain the speed
It doesn't look like we get any advice for now. May be some kind soul will share a generic Palm 500 rom?...
Does anybody know whethet the SDHC Driver works in this Palm 500v? It will be very cool if Treo 500v can use 8 Gb MicroSDHC..
no sdhc support according to pdadb.net info
About turning off Vodafone skin:
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\Enabled = 0 (DWORD decimal)
That should do the trick, it is supposed to remove the skinapp and it worked with my Samsung-skinned SGH-i620.
Give it a shot!
GeT a Treo 500
There 2 Version to this phone the vodafone branded 500v and the standard one The Palm Treo 500 maybe you could get the unbranded ones rom and flash it . Its Kinda like the motorola v360v and n0mal v360 it als0 was simalar u could flash with either firmware
Dear My_Immortal
HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin\Enabled = 0 (DWORD decimal)
Tried that, it only changes the phone in-call skin. Thanks for trying to help though.

I installed Smarttoolkit (freeware, http://e-natives.com/) to avoid the Vodafone launcher in combination with a nice skin from http://smartphone.kleinweder.ch/downloads/index.php.
My Treo 500v now feels a little bit like a smartphone again. Still not perfect. I hope we can get an unbrandend ROM very soon.

Too bad, Smarttookit makes my Treo 500V very instabile. Had to remove it, back to the Vodafone skin
I'm also looking for waste free 500v,
there are some new issues?
start using side button
thought I'd post it here as there's no specific thread for 500/500v. By default single press of 'side button' does nothing (how stupid), here is a simple registry tweak that will let you get some use out of it:
navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\KeyMaps
change value for the key 197 to 2 (Quick List) or 3 (Key lock).
Not many options, I know, but at least something. I mapped it for the Quick List since it's a lot easier to hit side button rather than reach for the top power button.
my treo has vodafone rom but is sim unlocked, i don't know how got unlocked, i buy it second hand, if anyone whants the rom let me know

Is there a way to get the storage v program allocation slider from wm2003 back?

Hi,
Well as the title says I find it really annoying that the slider in the memory panel has been taken away. I had one in windows 2003 and it was very useful and helped a great deal with the speed. I store everything on a memory card anyway so I might aswell allocate all the available memory to programs, I know this will have a huge impact on the responsiveness of the device.
I'm sick of how slow the hermes is. I had a choice of ppc's and i chose the hermes because I thought it would help..it doesn't. i was better off with full screen keyboard, i refrain from opening the keyboard because it locks up when i do. even after a hard reset and it only has 50% resources free.
I met a girl on a train a couple of weeks ago and she gave me her number but as i'd been listenin to music the thing locked!! it seemed to take sooo long. i had to do a soft reset, it was so embarassing. has anyone else had bad moments like this? i remember another time i was on weekly parade ( im a reserve soldier ) and my phone decided to turn itself off silent and it beeped, that got me in trouble.
so has anyone got any other tips to speed up my phone? should i research different roms? does the performance vary much? im running schaps 4.31, and i refrain from flashing as i cant afford to brick it but if it will help, ill have to learn how to do it again.
p.s. is tcpmp still the best media player? i need one that supports the most codecs and formats. i'm tryig to stream stuff from my winows home server. is there any plugins for whs?
any help with the above would be greatly appreciated. sorry for going off topic a bit, maybe i should've made 2 seperate posts.
thanks
1. the only way to use RAM for storage is via RAM disks. They, however, may be wiped upon restarts. See my related articles.
2. TCPMP is pretty old; CorePlayer is way better in many respects. Check out my multimedia-related articles.

applications keep auto closing..help me, please..

Hello all...
I am at an end here, frustrated and very sad..
No, now really the problem.
I've searched high and low for this problem, and really can't seem to find a solution.
I have a htc Tytn, or hermes.
If I haven't performed a reset in a couple of hours, when I run an app, like NEtfront, or Messenger, then for instance go to write a text message, the tytn closes all other apps.
This is starting to become very annoying, especially since I am also running s2u2, and s2p.
If s2p is running, and s2u2 locks the phone, after a couple of seconds s2p auto closes.
Really tried everything, this is really bugging me out, anybody had or has the same issue?
Please, please pretty please with cherry's on top, can anybody help me?
Running on Schapp's rom, 4.22
Using quickmenu, want to use x to really close apps, maybe that's related, but problem is also there when use x to close is deactivated.
Running SBSH today screen plugin (Ilauncher) as well, but also with task manager function disabled..
This is getting so annoying, someone please help me!!
It's probably closing them because of insufficient program memory.
Solution Found!!!
It's been a long and tiresome search, but I finally got to the root of the problem
Tried different roms, same result.
Tried registry keys for HTC Taskmanager and autoclose memory threshold as found in this forum, no result..
Finally I found out it's Oxxios closeapps causign my programs to autoclose.
I used it to cleam my memory every now and then, and used it as the run on unlock for A_C brilliant S2U2 tool.
So basically Closeapps would run the instant my TyTN booted...
Now what I found out, is though you do nut run Closeapps activally, after it is used once, it does something to your memory and WM..don't ask me what...
It seemed to be closing programs unwanted.
Now that I removed Oxxios closeapps, my mobile can run multiple programs without isuues.
When I run it once, back to square one...
Oxxios hibernate does not seem to do this, so I'll try using that if I want to clear some Memory..
So everyone with the same issue, spread the word.
It can be HTC Tasmanager (registry values for autokill and memory threshhold, search this forum for exact details)
AND\OR
OXXIOS CLOSEAPPS.exe
if you run it once, it will close your apps untill next reboot...
I did not know that, and it caused a lot of frustration..
So hope I can help out some other frustrated users..
Take care, and thank you all for your input oin this, glad I got it sorted...
That has got to be the dumbest explanation I've ever heard.
I don't have CloseApps installed ATM and WM6 still automatically closes background tasks when it needs memory.
