I have the original XDA-II and have an upgrade opportunity in a few days. I was thinking about going for the XDA-IIi. I was wondering about a few points and thought maybe people here might be able to help:
1) The camera has been upgraded quite a bit, can anybody supply me with a picture taken from the XDA-IIi so I can see the quality?
2) Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 2nd edition - Is this much different from the 1st edition on my XDA-II?
3) I am moving to the USA in jut under a year, I know that 1900MHz works in the USA. Can anybody tell me if there is an advantage to having 1800MHz (one that is available on the XDA-IIs)
4) Are there any plans for another XDA release soon? i.e. should I hang on for a few months to upgrade?
Thanks,
Allan
hi,
I can comment as follows.
Wait for the xda EXEC (Universal/MDA4 other names) which is due out any time soon in the UK on carrier o2/Europe. Its a 3G phone, so may not offer the benefits/compatability in the USA over 'edge' etc. I suspect that the USA will realease a tweaked version to suit the carriers of edge.
The camera on the 2i is crap when compared to the 2. seriously. dont listen to anyone whom says different.
2003SE is nice, landscape mode etc, slightly slicker menus, but over all so little difference, again, wait for the EXEC (or MDA4 as its known in europe) Wifi on board is the only reason i got the 2i, and in some ways i wish i had stuck the the 2 and the wifi card, and saved some cash and waited for the exec.
Hope that helps, in a nutshell the 2i is so much the same as the 2 , i would wait for the exec/mda4.......
heres a link for a review, only differnce been that in the UK it will be known as the EXEC as mentioned above and will be in Black as is the 2s currently by o2.

spot on bryson
i wish i had waited a 11months before upgrading to the da2i
as far as i'm concerned the 2i was a waste of space
Roll on the Exec!!! I'm upgrading early from the 2i to it, as well...
Does anyone have any idea of the approximate fine for upgrading early? Is there one? I'm on a staff account contract if that makes any difference.
Cheers
Ant
The XDA Exec is massive its simply too big to be used as a phone anymore.
The Blue Angel is still the device to go for, 2s. Simply becasue it's smaller than the Exec, also has a qwerty keyboard, and will be getting a WM5.0 upgrade in the future. Camera quality is also better than the 2i.

dude no offense but which rock did you crawl out under from.. firstly no current htc phones are getting wm5 upgrades and the camera quality of xda 2s is far far worse than the xda2i camera quality....i know i have both of them....

Landscape mode, totally cool! Cant wait until I get one!
Landscape should be available on the XDA2 if they release a WM2003SE ROM
Will O2 make the update available for free?
Isn't that the most dreadful machine translation!!
Is that just me or XDA 3 screen looks a bit yeollwish compare to XDA2?

They already did a free update for the XDA2 which was WM2003SP1 (at www.my-xda.com) so if they did a WM2003SE update it would probably also be free. They might not do one at all, though.

Probably just crap photography. Most advertising pics are taken in a professional studio and then enhanced somewhat, while independant low budget review pics are usually just snaps in mediocre office/home lighting.
The SP1 release was free from MS to the vendors. The SE release is going to cost them money, plus implementation time, so I expect they will charge us. Typically I've seen this to be about $30, perfectly reasonable considering all the work it takes.
well if they do then it would still be easy to share it (but of cause illegal)
unless they got some new copyprotection like activation in xp

I don't think they'd bother arsing around with that. They'd probably bite the bullet and take the cash from those who hand it over. Then if you phone up for support with your XDA2 and they ask what your OS is, and you say 2003 SE, they say "Oh, sorry, we only have you down as having 2003. We can't support whatever rogue installation you've got." Not that you'd actually get much support for your XDA2 anyway..
I would imagine most of our warrantees are already invalid after all the unlocking & patching, though

IF you havnt seen this yet, you can pre order it from expansys.com, from any EU site and HK, CN, NOT AUS. Shame. Sounds like next month they say! Cant wait!
my 2 cents!
why isnt there a forum dedicated to the xda atom yet when its already been released?

Perhapse because it is not actually a HTC device?
I thought it was xda developers not htc developers...
I don't think that many people have the device to justify having a forum perhaps.
It's only officially released in a limited number of countries around the world.
I had the pleasure of playing around with my mates Atom- two things that put me right off were 1) the screen contrast- absolutely terrible and 2) considering it has 128MB memory, it is relatively slow and sluggish. Would definitely like to these things fix in the next ROM upgrade.
I just got my Atom and I can honestly say it isn't bad.
The Screen contrast is completely adjustable and it seems better than my XDA II.
Also it is slow however, it gets a lot faster when you remove all the crap out of startup.
Only been using it for a short period but I'm currently happy with it.

How do you adjust the contrast? I only played around with it for about 20 mins. Like I said it belongs to a mate.
i actually considered that its a quanta device and not htc but as the other poster said, i think the XDA part of the Atom has more weight than its company of origin.
i dont think its because its only been released in a few countries either.a forum dedicated to the universal was up even before it was released if i remember correctly.

But there are going to far less of these devices than HTC products since O2 Asia is the only carrier of it. The Universal was/is available in many variants by many carriers hence more devices being sold.
All the better if they do have a forum.

but remember, china is the most populous country in the world!!!
My 2 cents,
Simple fact is this forum is for people with these devices to communciate.
People with XDA Atoms will continue using the forum to communicate regardless of whether there is separate forum for it
A separate forum will make it easier to post in the correct location and stop clogging up the General Discussion, so regardless of who makes it and where it is available, it really doens't make sense not to have a separate forum for it.

I had the Atom for about a week now. The thing looks stunning but performs quite poor. The memory is is a big corncern for me as it's just too low, I've only got 6 Megs left in the storage memory and I haven't loaded half the programs from my Jam yet.
I'm a bit lost and don't know what to do with my Atom because I've also got the K-Jam on upgrade for £30 and it perform much better but just very bulky and not as good looking. I brought the Atom from Expansys and have about 21 days return policy on it.
I really want to keep it but it's such a buggy thing for £552!!
I would suggest not to go in for the k-jam instead of the atom as its WM5 which is the problem (slow) I had the k-jam for 10 days, it was so damn slow I had to get rid of it...I mean if I use the device without installing any other software (WM5 compatible) its fine but as soon as I put 1 or 2 softs its lagged terribly, so stick with the atom & wait for a ROM update...
Also try removing the start up program like the user mentioned above...
There are also registry Hacks to make WM5 faster.
Atom & Dopod 818 Pro (Prophet) are hot machines in Hong Kong market and users are actively arguing about their pros and cons.
However, seems like a new ROM for Atom has been release but only available through service center, even not seen in seeo2.com (official O2 Asian support page). The ROM version is 20051223B2WWE. The general response is the ROM make the machine much much faster and the radio (not FM radio) signal is improved as well. I don't have the machine so cannot verify.
For 818 Pro, we Hong Kong people hearing more and more negative feedback... seems like the bad things raise slowly to the surface, like bubbles in thick oil. On the other hand, a side track news: Dopod is not going to release ROM upgrade as fast as before because so many people do ROM hack. It's really bad news and make me think twice before going for 818 Pro. :x
Not considering the bad reputation and performance during Atom's initial launch, seems like Atom with new ROM patch defeat 818 Pro a little bit... :?:
For me, I have stopped and just wait, to see which device will have a dedicated forum here... if there is no resource and feedback from you guys and play with the device together, no matter how well the device, it's just a consumer gimmick and not compariable to even magician
I have the Atom for the past 3 weeks and I guess I am not overly satisfied with the product,
even though this is my first PPC , I am a regular reader of all forums and have been following all product launches ,
one fo the main reasons for me to go in for the Atom was WM 2005
but it seems the product as such has some HW issues especially in the sound front ,and Data Transfer rate ,
The speakes are just too bad for what is supposed to be a media center PPC and the USB Active Sync Data Transfer rate is at best OK,
I do not know how a ROM upgrade will improve poor speaker quality and the Data Transfer speed, I guess I will have to just grin and bear it
I will be doing the ROM upgrade next week , will give my updates once I observe the perfomance of the Atom after the upgrade
A few more Atom gripes
Apart from the poor response time, I also find the standard alarm function does not work properly. A quick test with the alarm set for 10 minutes ahead works well, but 6am the next morning does not sound at all, until you later go into the alarm section to find out why, and then it goes off. Any ideas anyone?
Also, my Atom turns itself on accasionally for no reason. No incoming call or SMS, no alarm set, no USB or bluetooth connection, etc. It just turns on and sits there. Any ideas anyone?
Also - another poster advised removing items from start-up. How do you do this? Does it require a registry edit?
thanks,
depressed_atom_user
No registry edit to take items out of startup, done it on both 2003Se and WM5.

My O2 12 month contract ended in January and back then I didn't see any new stuff from O2 so I did not consider purchasing anything. However when I saw the XDA Zinc, I was pretty much sold as getting that as my next phone. However, now the Zinc is no more (I'm in UK right now) and the XDA Trion (HTC Hermes) has showed up. On top of this, my uncle is also nearing the end of his contract and is keen on getting the XDA Mini S (after he saw mine) but may consider upgrades.
Now the things bugging me are these:
There's the O2 XDA Terra (HTC Herald 100) which really is a XDA Mini S in black and has WM6 and possibly a better keyboard and camera and some other tweaks BUT with a microSD slot. The big issue is when it will be released.
Then There's the O2 XDA Trion - All things considered, the CPU is clocked higher but it is an ARM4 core based one and truthfully the CPU is from 2003 (as far as I can tell, the HTC Kaiser will use the same chip and only really has a better camera and a new keyboard mechanism). But it does have a better keyboard and camera...not to mention 3G capabilties (which the Wizard and Herald and any other OMAP850 based device - correct me if I'm wrong - lacks). However it again touts the microSD slot and is using WM5 and not WM6.
Considering that I find my HTC Wizard adequate for most things and the only things that truly bother me are the lack of an OK and Windows key on the front (but I am so used to sliding out the keyboard a little and using it), the lack of WM6 (can be resolved) the camera's resolution (could I stick a HTC Herald camera module in the Wizard?) and SDHC compatibility (now this is something I need to double check).I also get the feeling the OMAP850 can trump the Samsung offerings at clock speeds greater than 200MHz (I run it 116 at times and it's still usable for me)
The main reason I got the Wizard back then was because of the keyboard and the Exec is simply too impractical for me.
The question:
With all the above considered and in addition to the major question whether the O2 Contract is even worth it; I might be better off getting a device from expansys and the like (in which case a wait is a non issue), which of the following should I do? You can introduce your own as long as it's reasonable.
For me:
1- Get a new wizard fascia to replace the currently scratched one and do the WM6 upgrade and just hold on for a new device (I might do this anyway).
2- Get an XDA Trion as soon as it's available; it seems better than my XDA Mini S?
3- Screw the contract; it's cheaper to get the latest and greatest off expansys or someone when it arrives.
For my uncle who doesn't have a WM5 device:
1 - Get an XDA Mini S?
2 - Wait a week and grab an XDA Trion?
We are all in the same boat.
I say get a Trion and put Mobile 6 on it. O2 will not have another out until december if their track record is anything to go by. They ave been pissing around with the Zinc for 5 months now, i know my friend works for them and had it in his hands befor xmas.
In that case I am going to tell my uncle to head to a shop and try them out first(I will definitely have a play around as well).
Given o2's uk track record, it's WW release + 3 months (why does o2 UK skip devices anyway?). I might get a Trion depending on the total cost but until it comes out, I think I should get a replacement body and screen protector for my wizard.
So im looking to upgrade my phone soon. I currently use a Sidekick ID (Yes yes I know). Been a long time reader of the XDA forums so im looking for some expert advice from well, you guys(the experts). From my understanding the Tilt and Wing are pretty much the exact same phone with different carriers with the exception that the 8925(tilt) has double the ram speed and a faster cpu than the Herald(wing) as well as gps. Anyway the OBVIOUS choice is (Or at least I thought it was) the 8925(tilt). I proceeded to do some more research on the phone and soon discovered the Video Driver\No Hardware accelaration problem on those phones which was a huge turn off for me once I found out about it. As far as the Herald(wing) goes, it is obviously alot slower than the 8925(tilt) due to the slow cpu ,and freeing up memory is something that seems to be more of a tedious task that you have to do every so often. A friend of mine owns a Herald(wing) and he uses the OpenTouch Rom by Ttrans1 which is awesome and is definitely better/speedier than the stock rom. Anyway it seems to me that no matter which phone I get, I am taking a loss in some form or another. So I am here to ask you guys, would I be better off with a slow phone WITH proper video hardware acceleration (Herald/Wing) or a much faster Phone WITHOUT proper video hardware acceleration (Tilt/8925). Any advice, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

But black looks better
.. wait .. why? Wait a month or two and use the upgrade on a newer phone (HTC Rapheal). Or, just upgrade to the HTC Dream if you don't mind an O.S. switch as it has the larger screen.
Trust me, you're going to be disappointed if you do the Tilt/etc and see the new ones out in a month or two at incredible prices (to compete with the iPhone's popularity and price-range).
Not sure if T-Mobile is getting the Rapheal, but AT&T should be getting it at the end of October from what I've been told. Obviously, T-Mobile's HTC Dream (G1) is releasing on the 14th of October I think (for $179 w/2yr).
Or even better, wait a little longer and you can get the HD!!!
That´s a real piece of work!
you can get teh G1 thats coming out next month. I currently have a wing and im really happy with it, but im selling it and getting the g1.

I second that!! The HD will be the ultimate device!
First off,Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. The general responses seem to be to wait for a newer/better device which makes sense and is the smarter choice Howeverm, the problem (which I failed to mention in my original posting) is that I need to decide within the next week because my job requires me to have a phone with exchange server email(Which I think the sidekick doesnt have and even if it does, the sidekick is not a very "professional" phone and I dont want to use it for work). After reading about the HD though I am DEFINITELY going to upgrade to it when it comes out, but for right now I need to decide between the wing or tilt as I can get either one for 150$. So anyone have any advice as far as those 2 phones go? I understand that they are more or less the same but they both have 2 different problems So I need advice as to which one would be the better choice FOR NOW given the problems they both suffer. Thanks
I figured I'd just throw this out there, I almost went for the AT&T Tilt but decided to forgo that and got the ETEN Glofiish M800. The Tilt and the M800 are pretty much direct competitors. The M800 has a VGA res screen so I got that . As far as I know, the specs were very similar.
There are some reported bugs with the M800, I've fixed all the issues I've had so far and all seems well.

Ive read up on the glofiish and while its a pretty cool phone it is outside of my price range. But thanks for the suggestion as I had never even heard of that phone before prior to you mentioning it lol. Unfortunately, My choice is only between the Wing and The Tilt
Im on orange and in my upgrade period. I was going to go to another network but i got a deal from Orange.
Please can you help urgently with what you guys would recommend.
Last week i went for the Blackberry 8900 Curve but i am used to touchscreens and told orange who advised i could have the below phones. Also i wanted the SE Xperia X1 but was told that this was "never" released on Orange due to not passing various tests and that they would highly recommend against it. I see on here that the new Xperia X2 is soon to be out, when that is i dont know and if it will be a normal non buggy functional phone.
Nokia E71 - not touchscreen though
Blackberry 8900 Curve - Not touchscreen, not 3G, 150 sms storage limit
HTC Hero
HTC Touch (apparently cant have the pro version??)
HTC Touch HD
Samsung Omni HD i8910HD - OLED screen doesnt last long??
Nokia 97
Toshiba TG01 - Review doesnt have much favour for it at www.techradar.com , phone is also quite big
Can you guys advise cos it will be a 24 month contract and i rfeally dont want a handset that will be a problem for all that time.
I have used previously the SE P910i/P990i and also the HTC tytn 2.
I liked the P910i thought it was slow and then i came across the P990i and was unhappy with its sluggish performance, buggy software, and constant problems inc bluetooth not wanting to work with all other handsets. I liked the SE P Series phones as they backed up my contacts/sms etc onto a pc so if i ever losty the phone i could retrieve it and as well as that being able to do a lot more with them than a normal phone ie programs and ability to save unlimited (as far as i could tell) Sms/Mms etc.
The Tytn 2 would have been ok but it really peeved me off a lot of the t, ususally from the touch screen not feeling my touch lol. ALso a key thing for me, it didnt backup the phone contacts or sms.
PLease could you guys tell me what is a good phone to get and also of any other recommendations as i have tried an dtried to look on goog;e and reviews etc but it seems i keep getting the wrong info or if it is right i get more negative reviews than positive. Its really frustrating me now.
I would like the following functions:
Touchscreen
Backup to pc of phonebook contacts/Sms/Mms
Ability to be able to save unlimited Phonebook numbers and Sms
Ability to be used as a satnav using the Oraneg (UK) nav software or possible other co
Preferable to have 3G capability
Intuitive GUI
Least amount of headache so no buggy software or not doing as told lol or real slow performance
I will use as a media device but as a bsuiness pda type when i can start a business.
I need to know in the next asap i had to tell them today but they have been pushed to tommorow.
Please help and if you need any more info please do ask. As far as i recall i think i have covered it all.
Thanks
Welcome to forums
I would go for Touch Pro 2, and in second place I´ll chose Tosh TG01
Uhh..hello Hero.
although this isnt completely relavent to your post
u say u want a reliable phone as you dont want a problem phone for 24 months
theres a clause in orange contracts thats states if you have 3 faults the same during ur contract then thy will offer to give you a different handset
it takes a while too argue but it works
after sending me faulty samsung omnias that kept failing (handset lockups) i told them i wouldr prefer a different phone as id rater not have a 4th faulty phone
one guy told me this isnt in the rules isaid id take it up with another department they said it is in the rules but they logged my three handset locjups as keyboard failures. so there fore i wasnt entitled to a ifferent handset
after only three days of constant *****ing they finally told me theyd send my a touch hd
the moral to the story, dont be scared to ***** and moan
After playing with my wife's HTC Magic, I would happily recommend the HTC Hero. Capacitive touchscreen, responsive OS, plenty of apps for download, "proper" satnav through CoPilot Live and decent location services.
If you're set on sticking with WinMo then the Toshiba TG01 isn't bad at all. Yes it is quite large compared to some handsets, but the raw speed is noticeable in general app use and the screensize would make satnav a joy.
Another one to consider is the Samsung Omnia B7610 (Louvre). Think of it as a Samsung version of the Touch Pro 2.

Lol Thanks
Pilot -
Thanks ref the isnurance advice.
I have been down this route and to say i was talking to brick walls or that getting water out of a stone would probably be near the mark lol.
Orange were adamant i didnt have a problem with my SE P990i and also didnt tell me about the 3 strike rule either.
I was a good boy and didnt ask for a different moidel for about 18 months. The phone would just trun the backlight on fo rno reason on and off, the bluetooth decided it didnt like lg phones etc, it would do soo many things that would peeve me off and to think that my old trusty P910i was thought of as slow, man that was like a Pebtium 4 PC compared to the lowly P2 status of the P990i.
Yeah, basically one day after having lost my cool a few times with orange i got fed up and asked for a different model phone (after like the 5th replacement and all the palaava to get it flashed with backup etc taking an hour each time or so as well as the time wasted and onconvenience. They wouldnt do it cos they then aftyer 18 months said i have to have had 3 faults with it. I said wtf, howmany times have i rang you, how many replacement have i had, they then said no actually you need to have reported the same fault 3 times and i said wtf again - i said i have had the same faultS for 18 months with at least 5 handsets fi the same model but they said well... it depends what WE have logged on our system and wouldnt you believe it they had different logged faults for each scenario. So i said send a new P990i and iw ill show fault on bluetoothe again, so they did and i proved it again an dthen again. SO 3 times and each of these times ie 5 before and twice later they tried to charge me 30 pounds as per conditions through my insurance with them. The cheeky so and so's. I told them 2 year sony gurantee they said no, rang sony with them on the line, they shutup but then said i had to deal with sony direct, referred them to consumer law which apparently they dont know anything about, so i reffered them to their lawers to ask such questions, each tikme i had to go through this ****e and they each time pretended they had no idea what i was going on about.
Anyway, i have only claimed once in like 13 years for a mobile phone through orange.
£5 x 12 = 60
£60 x 12.5 = £735 the bsterds
Thnaks pilot, i wish i had joined this site like a coupole of years ago man, i did se it but i thought no point, could have saved lots of headache lol with your advice then.
Thanks pilot

Main reason are 2:
1. It has hardware keyboard, for me is a must
2. Is HTC build so it will have better support on this site
