So, I´m going to get a MDA compact rather soon (tomorrow or so) and I would just aks for your exalted opinions of what is useful to do to a new Magician, coming out of the package all new and unmodified.
I don´t even know what soft and hard resets are, and as I´m a german speaker by birth i would rather enjoy it if you would be quite graphical in your description of how to do what
I´m interested in anything that concerns optimizing the magician or changing the stadard appearence.

Quite a number of effective posts on this subject elsewhere. Try searching against my name for what I've got installed.
Essential:
backup software
bigstorage rom hack (gives you an extra 20mb of memory free)
1gb sd card!
sd card reader/writer
Cabinst
Then install lots of software. Always install all software to storage or storage card.
Soft reset is like restarting your pc.
Hard reset (hold down power and the little reset button at the bottom of the phone) will be like reformating your entire ppc. Only do this if you absolutely must. But backup often.
Install a task killer - try wisbar for a popular option. But it slows down your system. I use SmallMenu Plus.
For freeware check out this site: http://www.freecabs.de/
For many useful tips get "Spb Tips & Tricks". Don't spend much money on it if you have to, but it is useful.
Bigstorage is not for the feint hearted, but follow the instructions carefully and word for word and it'll work. It's best to do this before installing a ton of stuff, because it forces you to hard reset the phone; so BACKUP!

Hum... and this big storage rom hack... should you do this before or after udating to a new rom (and i got a 512 SD Card... isn´t that bad either, hu?)
And which backup Software/Card Reader/Writer would you recommend.
And Sorry, but the search won´t function, so could you just show me some of those Topics/Posts of yours?

hello,
I am trying to use destinator navigation software.
Unfortunately 2 error messages are coming up frequently:
map: your current map is erased or damaged
(I tried reinstalling a couple of times, but keeps on coming up quite frequently)
- not enough memory space, need to close down another application
(if I click on it still does not work)
I am using an XDA1 in the UK.
many thanks for your help in advance
Unfortunatly I canot offer any help, exept I am using Destinator 3 on my XDA II and have not had any issues.. I have noticed that GPS software does use fair amount of ram.
It might pay to take a look and see how much memory you have assigned for your device, not sure if the XDA I is the same but this can be done as follows:
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Try giving as much memory as you can for Program memory and see if you still get the same problems... if you do simply put it back...
Another thing you can look at is your SD card, I am using a Kingston 512MB SD Card and every now and then I loose my maps, ejecting and reinserting the SD card fixes this problem, I have been told by the users on this forum that it's a problem with the 512MB Kingston SD card and the XDA II device...
Hope that this helps...
navigationsystem problem
thank you very much for your reply.
I am using a 128 MB ingetgral SD card, which I have moved in & out a couple of times now.
Shifting the memory towards program always resulted in an automatic readjustment...
Still getting the same error message
if anybody has some new suggetsions, please let me know
Hi golf
I'm not too sure what else it could be, how much RAM does your XDA have left? I know Destinator (and other GPS software) does need a bit of RAM to run, unfortunatly I'm also new to the GPS game on Pocket PC so can't offer too much advice but I'll see what I can find for you...
If I remember correctly Destinator 3 used about 20-30 MB of my Program RAM on my XDA... I could be wrong but thats about what I remember it being...
Please could you send me all your RAM settings...
Start --> Settings --> System (Tag at the bottom) --> Memory
Allocated, In use and Free amounts for both Storage and Program... and I'll see if there is any thing I can see from those amounts...
Cheers!
I'll keep my eyes open for any other sujestions
I probably blundered upgrading my compact:
I read the page on a site where the whole procedure (which is the Word-file in the ftp's Backuptool folder) was explained. It stated that an SD card with at least 128 MB of space was needed for the whole procedure.
Since I had 132 mb left on mine I thought I could use that one, which was the one with my sprite backup file and games and sorts.
But the card remains unreadable for the Compact and XP. So must I really format it or is the some workaround to retrieve my stuff or delete whatever romupdate or ntrw did to my sd-card, leaving the data I had on it before the procedure?
Sorry to say this but your data's gone unless you get a program like undelete that can read data that's been passed over twice, even then I can't garantee that as I'm not sure if that process works on SD cards (I'm guessing it does). You will have to reformat the card to make it readable again first.
O.k. too bad. Thanks jimmy. It's not a huge problem, I've got my Compact for just about a month now, so nothing too important on it yet. Well If you consider an AOE campaign not really important
LOL, I know what you mean about AOE! When I got my phone I played it for hours and hours. Then my card decided to corrupt itself. One and only time it's happened, too. When I didn't have an up-to-date backup! Lost my game, I nearly cried! That happened 2 months ago and I still haven't brought myself to reinstall the game cos it would just frustrate me now!
My company just released a new addition of windows mobile (WM) based software. Before the release I decided that I would "anticipate" the release by purchasing an used HTC Mogul which the seller of the phone had installed WM 6.1 professional. Little did I know that my company requires 25 MB of program memory to be available when installing the software. I followed many of the suggestions made in other forum threads about "cleaning up" program memory but at best I couldn't get above 24 MB of program memory (i.e. oxios hibernate & MemMaid included). You can see how close I was, but I can't install this software without having ActiveSync running as well. Here are my questions:
1) Is there anyway to get the HTC Mogul program memory to be more than 25 MB? Total memory is almost 47MB. Does the system really take up that much program memory?
2) Is there any type of program that I could install that would show more memory than actually exists? Like a "Pseudo" program memory creating program.
What stinks is that my company requires you to activate your phone using desktop software while in activesync. My phone meets all minimum requirements but program memory. Anyone?
I suggest (though i doubt it's possble) you search for a CLEAN rom for your titan..
the cleaner the better
flash it and hope it will use less program memory.
about the fake app.. i never heard of one.
I used to use MobileSwap on my Dell Axim X51v. It creates a swap paging file on the SD card just like Windows does. That was well over a year ago, I don't know if it's still being updated or anything, but it ran on WM5 fine, should be ok on WM6
-crobs808
If you can't get a clean rom, why not just temporarily patch the program to run in 24mb rather than 25mb? It must be a hefty app to need all that ram, but does it really use 100% of the 25mb?
V
Please let me know where I can get MobileSwap
Please let me know where I can get MobileSwap. I searched the web, but could not find it. Thank you.
Although I have all photos, music, apps etc pointed to 'external' memory I am now getting low memory (<2MB) warnings. I have manaully purged (as much as I feel confident with) main memory and even uninstalled and re-installed programs to ensure that they reside in external memory. However when I search for files >64KB there are no files reported in main. This is driving me crazy and I need help before I microwave my HTC Diamond. Please, please point me in the right direction
The messages are probably not for storage memory but for either RAM or virtual memory. Close applications instead of minimizing them (the usual default). Get a task manager and see what's going on.
I hoped that that was the case however I have a RAM cleaner tool and even after running that and killing all processes I still have low memory. Is there any way I can determine what is taking up main memory?
you know one of my friends has the same problem with his samsung omni and i can't for the life of me find what is taking up so much room. he is pretty back to stock and we have tried everything. i tell him to return his phone as defective but he hasn't. is this a winmo problem that could be a bad code or is it just dumb luck that this has happened to an htc and samsung?
Calendar items, phone logs, messages reside in main memory too -- have you cleared those?
I do use the calendar and maybe clearing some of the old entries will help. However I do not use the handset as a voice phone, only data, and have no call logs or texts taking up space. I do use it for email so will check that too. That said it's currently using 83.36MB out of 84.56MB and doubt if the odd deletions will make a great difference. Is there a way of partitioning some of the storage card space over to extend the main storage area?
You can relocate \My Documents pretty easily with a registry change. You can also move your PIE cache (sk tools will help with this). These things might help. I thought the diamond had 4G of internal memory? Does it have a small main memory and then a large internal storage memory? I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with it.
You may want to install ClearTemp or something similar to clean out your temp and volatile folders. And you're sure it's not a ram issue? Do you have the problem immediately after a soft reset, or does it take a while?
I may have been leading you down the garden path. When I run the memory app' in Settings there are two totals: Storage and Program. In storage 82.7MB out of 84.5MB is in use and in program 78MB out of 111MB is in use. The Diamond complains of being almost out of memory shortly after it is turned on. Without a guide to follow I'm a little ill at ease attempting registry changes even though I have advanced config and PHM RegEdit installed. I will try ClearTemp if I can install it! Thanks for the help to date.
Does anyone know how to clear out the 'storage' area of the HTC as Opera is now refusing to run (not enough cache space...?) I'm facing the prospect of reloading the firmware (again) with no confidence I won't be back in this situation again in a couple of months
The out-of-memory warning message is activated after the ram memory is lower than a desired value .
The activation pattern and the threshold value are controlled by a set of registry entries under \HKCU\Software\Htc\TaskManager\
Can Play With It By Changing The Threshold Value In Registry.
Thanks for that, however at < 1-2MB of storage area remaining my problem is how do I recover storage capacity? I used ClearTemp and I now have around 7MB free which is much better though not ideal. Surely there must be a way of tweaking the storage / program balance through one of the toolkits?
I had the same prob few month back. The best way is to Hard reset > reinstall programs your REALLY NEED to internal storage except .net C Framework or Smart Protect etc... [install those types of programs to main memory]
The other way is
Buy SkTools if you dont have it
move things ie. programs to internal storage!
I select internal memory every time I install an app which further mystifies me. Now I can't get Opera to run.... it's just a year of break downs for me
Hey guys,
I've been looking for something I had on my wizard a while back. I had something that made my SD card appear as if it was the wizard's hard drive. I remember when I would look at memory, it would show under internal memory something like 2000mb as opposed to the standard 50mb. I've searched all around and was never able to find that again.
At the same time, I was wondering if UC capable roms are not the same thing...? Anyone care to explain exactly what that means?
Thanks,
Phil

Click to collapse
That would be WM5torage
WM5torage
Don't really think that WM5torage is what Cphil1 is looking for. WM5torage simply makes your Wizard's SD card visible as would a "pen drive" from your PC. It doesn't "tag on" the card's larger memory to the smaller internal one - which if I understand correctly, is what Cphil1 is after.
Cheers.
Well...
So far, no luck...
I still haven't found that app. I'm very disappointed that I flashed my roms without remembering that I had something like that!
Anyways, I still would like to know what is the complete definition of UC capable. Would it be a way to store program files on the storage card all the while running it from the ppc?
Phil
UC
Far as I know, and that's very limited indeed, UC stands for User-Customisable (Customised). ROMs that are UC capable auto-install a predefined set of applicatons located on one's SD. So basically, one can preconfigure the stuff one wants to have installed and "newer" ROMs would automatically read the list and install apps accordingly.
Hope that helps.
