Let my experience be a warning to others.
Have nothing to do with the xda exec, WM5 or Microsoft Activsync 4.1 until the software is sorted out.
At present it is all a complete nightmare.
I am now left with a very bulky mobile phone( I think although I am not sure of the bluetooth headset yet) with no contatcts or appointments and no syncronisation to my computer on which the Outlook file has been completely screwed.
I still have to carry ny trusty old xda II for all other purposes.

hi
Have you tried using the beta activesync 4.2?
Bryson
Sorry I'm not brave enough.
If an officially approved Microsoft released program can screw up all the firewall and netwrok settings and destroy my Outllook file god knows what a beta might do.

Of the 3 things that you've mentioned (e.g. xda exec, WM5 or Microsoft Activsync 4.1), I'm going pretty well with two of those (e.g. WM5 or Microsoft Activsync 4.1). So, lets put the blame on xda exec?
i would look around int eh exec's settings under AS and see if it was set to sync using usb to the computer in question

I would very much like to get that far!!
Re hanmin and The Brit
You must both be much cleverer than me if you have had no trouble with WM5 and 4.1. Could you possibly point me towards an idiot's guide please.
Incidentally 4.1 appears to work OK with my xda II running WM 2003 so I suppose it must be either WM5 or the Exec or both
Brian Leach
Brian,
It just worked "out of the box" without any configuration (other than ticking the boxes) or other messing around required.
In the office where I work there are 3 Prophets, 1 Wizard and a Charmer all WM5 and AS4.1 and nobody has any issues. My guess it's your Universal. :?
i'm using a universal .
with as4.1 and WM5
no problems here.
Just installed it and it works
and i sync 3 devices with it
1) compaq ipaq 3870 (wm2003)
2) Spv c500 (wm2003)
3) mda pro (qtec 9000)(wm2005)
It will be good if you could tell us what you are experiencing.. e.g. how you install your activesync, and what you see on the screen and what happened next..
I'm afraid it's a long story.
I first tried to connect with my laptop which had been happily syncing my xda II via AS 3.8 I think.
So I removed the xda pairing and then uninstalled AS 3.8.
I then installed AS 4.1 but when I attached the exec it came up as an unkown usb device.
I uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times but could not get beyond this. By the way I'm running xp professional sp1.
I put the problem down to the computer retaining some xda II settings.
I therefore installed AS 4.1 on my desktop also xp pr sp1 which is WAN to the laptop.
The installation went alright and the exec was recognised and installed.
I set up the syncronisation and all went well although at some point I got the error message relating to a too large Outlook file which did not seem to be a problem for the syncing.
However all this would only work if I turned off Zone Alarm which I was not happy with and at this time I discovered that I could not move any files within Outlook folders or download any emails from my Yahoo account, each problem being met by an outlook file is locked message and an error messaage which I discovered meant that the pst file was corrupt.
In the meantime I had installed a couple of programs which I discovered were not compatible with WM5. At this point when switching on the machine I got two error messages one relating to Theme Refresh and I noticed that most of the system settings icons had been removed.
I therefore did a hard reset whereupon the error messages disappeared and the system settings returned. The Outlook file on the computer was/is still screwed.
However on reconnecting the exec I received the unknown usb devise error message I had become to regard as an old friend.
Turning to Zone Alarm if it is activated it blocks all attempts to download emails even though the three programs required by AS 4.1 have been given access. My conclusion is that it has screwed up the network settings in ZA.
Since then I have reinstalled the xda II on my laptop using AS 4.1 I should add and the syncronisation seems to be as normal as it has been for the llastt two years.
I have spent a lot of time since then trrying to export the parts of my Outlook file which was not backed up ( admittadely only a few days with a view to transferring across the pst file from the laptop and hoping it cures the problem.
Sorry it's such a rant but you can see how much ttime I've wasted to get to a worse postion than I started from.
One other point how the hell do I execute the voice speed dialler or disable it.
Having paired my Jabra BT 200 with the exec whenever I try to instigate a call the voice dialler activates gives an error message about no voice tag and then dies. I then have to press the talk button with the stylus to make the connection.
As I said before to my mind everything seems to have gone backwards with WM5 although looking at the posts on this and other forums there seems to be a balance between those who are happy with it and those like me who wish they had never seen it!!
Sorry but you did ask!!!
Brian Leach
Re Unknown USB Device.
I was having this error when having partnetships setup for both the M2000 and M5000.
I resolved this issue by making sure that before I connected a device I went into the File menu (in activesync), click on mobile device and make the device you want to sync is selected. Then connect.
Matt
Have you tried installing Sp2 as someone suggested in another thread?
At the risk of becoming boring I am pleased to report that I am almost back to where I started last Friday!!
I was able to extract most information from the "locked" Outlook pst file import this into the pst file on my laptop then copy this file back into the C drive on my desktop. Result Outlook working normally, Hurrah!
Am I brave enough to try loading Activsync 4.1 and syncing again? Not for a while I think.
Re SP2 I'm not going there unless I absolutely have to! This does not include trying get this heap of rubbish to work. I will merely revert to the good old xda II and use the exec as a hopeless mobile phone until the software catches up.
Incidentally I discovered another problem yesterday. The memory usage has changed from the xda II I understand and it now seems unlikely it will be of much use to me as I am pretty much up to capacity on that device. Still only on the contract for another year!!
To suggest using an SD card for programs as I have seen on one review is obviously nonsense. My TomTom navigator maps take two 1gb cards and that is without the program so the machine becomes useless as a GPS device amongst other things. Not even heavy enough to make a good paper weight but not far off!!
Doesn't seem to be much of an improvement over the xda II to me.
Sorry rant over.

Pure madness, you refuse to do the basic necessary steps to get the device working, then rant that it dosn't work. priceless.
I want to use linux software on my PC, it says I have to run a linux OS, but I don't want to do that, so as the software won't work under windows XP, it must be ****. LMAO
Proof of my long term belief, there is nothing wrong with the Universal except the people who use it.
Guess what I use an Exec with WM5 and AS 4.1 with a fully working firewall and everything works.
Sorry don't agree.
SP2 is NOT a basic step. See the numerous problems caused by this so called upgrade.
I don't accept the linux/xp analogy. These are completely different operating systems not versions of the same.
I am quite prepared to take some time to set up a product but so far I have wasted about five days getting nowhere.
This is a consumer product available to the general public you should not need to make major changes to your computer system to make it work properly.
In addition I have used an xda II for over two years vitually problem free.
I am pleased that your exec is working fine for you, you are obviously better at computers than I am.
My point is that in every respect the exec is a step back from the xda II for everything I want it to do.
If you're happy with it fine but I am in the process of sending mine back so that I can get back to the work I am supposed to be doing.
Brian Leach
i would do some tests on other computers to see if it will work on them
i mean of cause as is not without it's issues
but i would make sure other factors dident interfear before i put the sole blame on AS and or Exec
usb2.0 vs. usb1.1 settings could be the issues
rights and left over from older installs
the usual suspect is often the os and or 3th party programs and settings
like had a xp install which would allways reboot without a warrning when an external usb device hd or sd reader or camera was connected
reinstalled and never saw that issue again

Ok, when SP2 hit the streets there were a few problems but with all the patches for the patch ( :? ) it's now settled down and is really stable. Do a full backup of your system and give it a try.
Thanks for the tips.
I am sure that what you say is correct.
It is almost certainly something to do with my particular setup, being a business network set up and administered by a reasonably competent but amateur computer man, but as it works just fine for me under SP1 I am reluctant to install SP2 just now to get a devise working which in all honesty is not as good as my xda II ( for my purposes I must stress, there may be improvements which don't affect me).
I blame myself for not doing enough research before taking the plunge. As everything I have read since indictaes that it is not the device for me.
In any event I am in the process of sending it back so it is no longer an issue.
Brian Leach
but if it is an usb2 vs. usb1.1 issue then you will have to make sure if you ever replace your xdaII that you dont just get the same issue
all new pda's are likely to come with usb2 from now on
Hello,
I've updated my I-mate PPC to WM5, trying various different ROMS.
Everytime I reflash, all of my contacts, appointments, notes etc stay on the phone. Also the software I installed before flashing stays in the system. Is this normal? How do I get it to completely wipe everything and put on an entirely new system so it's like a brand new phone?
Also, the storage size stays at 14.57MB, which isn't enough. Why isn't it making it bigger to say 32MB or whatever the Rom is supposed to set it at??
Sorry if this is all just because I haven't read the instructions properly but I can't seem to find the solution to these problems.
Cheers,
Tim
you format diskinchip from the bootloader
any chance of getting some more info? doing a search for diskinchip gives me nothing... really all I want is more storage memory than 14.57 MB...
Cheers
HELMI SP2
Hi there
Use the ROM provided by moeya. Helmi SP2! Great rom.
Itll automatically give you 30mb storage, instead of 15mb.
All th details to format the chip is in th readme, provided with the download!!

i-mate PPC to WM5
Hello Tim,
please note that the upgrade from PPC to WM5 is not possible in some cases it can run and get installed but in most cases it might damage the device main board and in this case the device will no longer works and also note that the windows mobile 2005 is not easy to work on the 2003 operating system like what the PPC got. and also about the storage size on the PPC its not enought because of the programs that get installed with the operating system of the PPC and take from the size of the actual memory on the device i hope you take the advice in conisderation about upgrading to wm2005.
Brad
thanks guys I've installed the Helmi rom and am very happy with it...
one thing that I wish it had, that other WM5 ROMs have, is a memory icon on the bottom taskbar. Is it as simple as a registry edit?
Also, holding the on button down doesn't turn the backlight off anymore - is there a fix for this??
has anyone managed to get epocrates installed and working on a WM 6.5 rom?
or is there someway to resize Thomson's Clinical Xpert for VGA screens?
I've recently flashed the stock ATT fuze rom to one of Da_G's WM 6.5 roms. It's fast, stable, and has great battery life (currently sitting on my desk after 26 hrs+ w/ maybe 10% remaining, which is a tremendous improvement from the <12 hrs i was getting). Everything is fine and dandy, but the most important software for me does not work.
Epocrates installs but does not perform the initial autoupdate. it simply stalls at the update screen. I've tried both the wireless installation and desktop installation and both do not work. Speaking to their tech support, I've found that WM 6.5 is currently unsupported. Anyone get this working on a WM 6.5 rom?
In the meantime, i've installed Thomson's Clinical Xpert, but it's interface was probably designed for QVGA screens so the drop-down menus are not navigable on my VGA device. how can i go about resizing the application for a VGA screen (either through modification of the CAB file or if there is any application that can alter the resolution/stretch it)?
thanks.
workaround in this post below
Having the exact same issue- any help will definitely be appreciated. I love the new 6.5 interface and would prefer not to go back to 6.1 unless absolutely necessary
Same here. I just spent an hour trying to load Epocrates until I found this thread. I like the WinMo 6.5 much better than 6.1, but unless someone can find a workaround I guess I will have to revert.

Same here. However, I did revert back to 6.1, still no luck on installing Epocrates. Even disabled the Microsoft encryption setting. Still no go.
what wm6.5 build is everyone using? i've so far only tried it on Da_G's 21198.
i'm really surprised that epocrates won't install on wm6.5 as i don't think very much has changed in the architecture from 6.1. the issue w/ epocrates is that it installs, but hangs during the initial autoupdate. the actual application is installed and can be opened briefly (i can see the the on top etc.), but the data itself is not there b/c it cannot be synced. when trying to install via the windows desktop installer, the autoupdate progress bar pops up and the download starts, but quits with an error about the autoupdater conduit.
if the conduit can be fixed/tweaked perhaps epocrates will work? has anyone tried moving files from a working 6.1 installation to an aborted install on wm6.5? i'd try to do it, but right now i don't have the time to rebuild my wm6.5 setup, which is also why i haven't flashed to one of the newer 6.5 builds.
for the time being i'm using Thomson Clinical Xpert, but its UI makes the application barely usable on my Fuze.

It's same with me. I reverted to 6.1 bcos of epocrates and UpToDate. epocrates wont install as e'one here said. UpToDate installs and runs but cant display the final pages. It seems to use the IE and the pages are stored inside .jar files. somehow it cant go inside the .jar files to display the html files. It says the pages are not available.
I hope these issues will be solved soon.
BTW, I'm using TESS Premium 4.3 by Aman in my Elf.
Same
Wow same here, that's incredibly irritating
i finally had some free time to tinker this weekend and i've got epocrates running on wm 6.5!
following my previous hypothesis, i flashed to an old 6.1 rom and installed epocrates and performed an update. then i copied the "essentials" folder from "Program Files" to my sd card. i then flashed to wm 6.5 (da_g's 21501 beta 4 kitchen) and installed epocrates. as usual, it could not perform the initial autoupdate. instead, i closed the update application, deleted the existing Essentials folder, and copied the Essentials folder from my sd card that was from the intial 6.1 installation to Program Files. epocrates now works! i didn't bother with any of the add-on components/programs as i mainly need access to Rx, Sx, Dx, and labs tabs. of course, you likely will not be able to update epocrates from wm 6.5 as the crux of the problem is the autoupdater module.
Post perhaps?
Hey just wanted to add my 2 cents saying I'm having the same problem. I'm using HTC fuze with Mystic ROM by vRC1.0 based on Da_G's 21500. It's also a windows mobile 6.5 ROM.
Anyhow I was wondering if someone could post a zipped version of the essentials folder that works, so I don't have to reflash my ROM twice.
anyone has idea about UpToDate thing in WM6.5. Eventhough there is a workaround for Epocrates, I'm still stuck with 6.1 cos of UpToDate. Any input/suggestions wud be highly appreciated.
EDIT: I found about UpToDate in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499741 but u hav to cook into ur own rom... too bad ..

+1 for me too... I too would prefer not having to reflash again.
My Essentials folder won't be the same as yours. It will have my preferred insurance plans, for one thing.
Clearly, this hack allows ePocrates to run. However, it doesn't address the lack of updating, which is really one of the important features of ePocrates.
Since ePocrates is the primary reason I carry a smartphone device instead of a plain phone, I'll be sticking with a 6.1 ROM for now.
epocrates and active sync
I was wondering if anyone using the work around has been able to use active sync to sync with their computer. Does it break if epocrates tries to auto-update that way through the active sync? Is there a way to turn off the epocrates auto-updater so you can active sync?
I was able to use the work around without flashing my ROM. If you still have an old phone, you can have epocrates with Windows Mobile 6.1 on THAT phone, move the essentials to the storage card. Then install epocrates on your 6.5 device with the storage card in, and it works perfectly fine for me.
But now I'm afraid to sync my phone with my computer. I NEED epocrates to function at work. I want to be able to sync as that's one of the main benefits of a windows mobile phone, but keeping epocrates has to be priority one for me.
BTW, I checked with epocrates support, and they said they intend to support 6.5; they just don't know when.
Working now!
its now working officially with wm 6.5
greets,
A couple of days ago I installed the epocrates Rx on my brand new HTC HD2 (windows mobile 6.5) thru the standard installation procedure, and thought everything was running ok, until today that I just realized it doesn't support scrolling (I have to open the keyboard and use the arrow keys -extremely cumbersome!).
Then I searched on the Epocrates site for support and found this:
Question
Does Epocrates support Windows Mobile 6.5?
Answer
Epocrates does indeed support Windows Mobile 6.5.
While installation through a computer should be in essence the same as installing to a Windows Mobile 6.1 and older device, installing directly to a wireless Windows Mobile 6.5 device is a bit different.
Open Internet Explorer on your Windows Mobile 6.5 handheld and navigate to the following web address.
http://get.epocrates.com/?action=all
Please note that "www." is not part of the above web address.
Select the "Install Now" button for "Windows Mobile 5 and later."
Please take note of where Internet Explorer prompts use to save the Epocrates installer file (Main Memory or Expansion card). It is called:
OTAUpgraderSigned.exe
Open File Explorer on your handheld and navigate to My Device, My Documents. You should see the "OTAUpgraderSigned.exe" file there. Tap on it to begin the install process.
Should you encounter difficulties, please contact Epocrates support.
Don't know if anyone already tried the above, if so, please give some feedback. Does it work?
Anyway, I'll probably give it a try later in the day. Let's see what happens.
I have tried as Lovanova tells in his messagge but it still does not work scrolling in my HTC HD2.
Sorry to tell that this way described by epocrates support doesnt work in HD2.
hmm, you re right.
Scrolling does not work on HD2.
Damn!
They could at least update their product flag ship as so little that it doesnt look like MS-Dos-crap ... they ve got good looking apps on the iphone with nice fingerscrolling ...
its so ridicilous
Hey guys.
How do I install 6.5 on my i780? Guide, anyone?
Few other questions:
-Is it stable enough to use?
-What will happens to my files and programmes?
-Is it fully supported by my phone?
Thanks
You can find how to flash on this forum in i780's threads, basically you need an xp pc, mirage, modem drivers and activesync.
-It's stable except for a mouse bug (when you move the cursor a little square appears on the screen)
-Flashing the device you'll lose everything (except for the files stored in the micosd card) but you can backup sms, calls, contacts etc (no files and no installed programs) with a software called pimbackup
-Yeah but it has the mouse bug (for me it's terrible, but maybe you can live with it)
Ah I see. I'll go look for the stuff and give it a try.
Also.. I heard something about bricking your device? Does this occur often?
Mouse bug shouldn't annoy me that much, since I use the D-pad function.
Thanks for the info
EDIT: I'm using Windows 7, but I can also switch to XP. I have the Activesync program for Windows 7, so would it work?
thanks too
The flashing program (mirage) only works under xp (there are some ways to use it on vista but i suggest you to use xp, i flash from a virtual machine under win7 x64 without problems).
Bricking the device is possible, someone bricked his device and some others people didn't. I hope you're not in the 1st group. This doesn't happens really often but the risk of bricking exists.

Hi to All..
Hope everyone is well.
If this question has been answer else where then my apologies to all.
I have an XDA Orbit that came with WM6(prob 6.1) and am wishing to upgrade the rom to 6.5..... I regularly backup the internal memory to MicroSD using Sprite Backup.... I backup ALL internal content so apps, registry and settings etc are backed up. Now my question is this... If I do a rom upgrade can I simply restore the backup file thus returning the Orbit to original state before the upgrade with the change being of cause a 6.5 rom and not a 6.1 rom.. I just don't want to have to reinstall over 250 apps if I can help it....
regards
Lohtse
Hi,
Yes you can restore your apps from sd card after flashing (of course taking out your SD before flashing!)
Just remember that some apps may not be compatible with 6.5, also 6.5 takes a lot of more RAM so be sure you have enough to run all you need.
Hope it helped,
Doing a full sprite restore is kind of a lousy idea, if you ask me, especially when upgrading from 6.1 to 6.5. How many registry entries from 6.1 will either useless in 6.5 or in conflict? Beats me, but it will affect device performance. What's worse, if you're not happy with the new rom, you won't know if it's the rom's fault for sucking or if it's your fault for importing a lot of bad registry settings. In some cases, I've read that doing a full restore locks up the pda, with a hard reset being the only way to get it going again.
You have 250 apps installed? Holy crap, that's a ton!!! All I can say is this: keep your cabs. If you have them all, you can have them automatically installed with sashimi. (If not, you can use sk tools to re-pack any installed program back into a cab.) I guess it may be worth it to try the sprite backup just because of the enormous amount of crap you've installed (no offense, lol). I would actually recommend that you try out Resco Backup. I haven't used it myself (have the demo, though). It allows you to do more selective restores than Sprite. Also, you can unpack the backup on your pc later if you find that you're missing things. It costs about 20 bucks, but it's really the only backup utility that I've ever been tempted to buy. I already own sk tools, and it does a good job of backing up stuff, but Resco sounds pretty sweet.
