SD cards of doom - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Accessories

hi all i have 12 XDA 2 under the Qtek brand. And i have had stupid amounts of issues with sd cards. i have gone though over 30 of em.
im using the latest firmwares and im usign them for tomtom 3.09 and email attachments.
but i keep getting the SD cards dying. do most users find this normal?

i had a sandisk 256MB with my xda1 and that never gave any problems but were a bit slow
with my xda2 i had a 128MB sandisk card also slow
now i have a kingston 512 elite pro and it's fast and ok
never had a sd card die in any device
but sd cards have limited writes before they die but they have 1000's of writes before that

i have had many SD cards varing from dane elec. Viking. and kingston.
all of these are 512k and not (hi speed) just standard. but i hav e had to send so many back for completly dying. my supplier thinks i eat them or something

odd maybe there is something wrong with your xda so it gives them too much power or something
you mean 512MB right ?

Try Kingston. Mines a 256mb and I haven't had any problems at all. TomTom is fast (both version 3 & 5) and never had any die on me

I've also had a 256MB Kingston, which has been faithful in my XDA 2i.
I thought ok, time to get bigger, so put in a 1GB Toshiba, followed by a 512MB Toshiba.
Both of which are now DEAD!
90 quid, Mwaa... Bye bye!
I tend to agree with RudeGar - I would imagine that the HTC manufacturers didn't want the extra cost of a variable regulator to power the SD card, so if it negotiates a lower voltage, they are not able to supply it...
Linux just reports "block read error" when trying to access a dead card, Windoze hangs!
Anyone found a way around this problem?
Cheers,
Richard.

My 256 meg sd card today passed away, it was a viking I think and it contained my tomtom program and maps. I am glad it didnt happen while travelling as I get lost easily, anyway it has now gone to silicone heaven and I am heartbroken.
Anybody got a any cheap replacements :?:

My Kingston 256 MB is OK too, but now I'm very leery of upgrading to higher capacity... :?

yess it is
oh yes it is

dunno if this will help anyone, but i started with a regular sandisk 128mb, then upgraded to a sandisk ultra II 256, then a kingmax (not kingston!) platinum 512mb, then now a toshiba 1gb. All this on my xda2.
all have been fine except one time where i had a problem with the kingmax platinum, but i suspect that was because i dumped it in a card reader, and did some major transferring in and out of large files (movies, etc). Soon it would show a greatly reduced capacity in both my xda and card reader. Got cnetx's flash format, fixed & formatted it, and now it's fine, though i've since moved it to my digicam, and now use the toshiba 1gb.

I had a Toshiba 512 SD which completely died within a week now I have a Kingston 512 MMC+ had it a month and still going strong and very fast.

sd cards...
Hi all, I've got a maxell 128mb and a Panasonic pro high speed 512mb. My Maxell gave me a bit of a scare when i had my Xda2. All my data was wiped off !!! I inserted the card the one day and it was as empty as the day it was born. Took it back to Dixons and that was not much help. They said i can send it away to try and retrieve my lost data.
I cut my losses and formatted the card on my PC. No probs since
I am now using both cards in my xda2i and i've had no data loss.(touch wood)

I have been using 128 and 256 Ridata cards for 3 years without any problems. Also I have used a 512 Astone for the past 9 months for movies also without incident.
I always keep my spare ones inside a case and don't expose them to direct sunlight. They may be tough critters but you can damage them if they are mistreated.

MMC or SD
I have an XDA IIi (Well the Qtek version of it) and am going to get a memory card in the order of 512Mb for it. There seems theres been a lot of bother been had with the SD cards. Has anyone had any problem eith MMC's? Are there any disadvantages to using MMC cards (speed etc)? Can anyone reccomend a cheap SD card at this size that they have had no problem with? Cheers

EXPERIMENT: Add your SD Card to the Lockup List, XDA2i

Ok,
I believe the reason for the lock up when using an XDA2i and either TT3 or TT5 is soley down to the Phone and Not the SD Card!
This is a questionable statement I know! but please bear with my little experiment, it may be usefull!
Now the only way to get closer to an answer will be for each of us XDA2i owners to post the type, make and size of SD card we are using. This way we may find certain SD cards work and certain SD cards don't. (I think we will find the XDA2i locks up no matter which card is used, we shall see!)
This way any SD cards that do work can be tried and tested by others and if we do find 1 single card that does allow the XDA2i to fully work without lockups then we can all buy it!
I think what will happen is some people will report a certain SD card doesn't work and others will report the same card does work. This in my opinion will add this SD card to the list of not working. I want this experiment to be as robust as possible, I certainly don't want to go and buy an SD card that still causes lockups or makes the problem look like the SD card is the cause and not the phone.
Being a Corporate install or using Active O2 install makes no difference at all, both cause lockups, so this is simply an SD card list only!!
Let me start this off:-
Corsair 1GB (SD1GBA0506H3S3TWM) XDA2i Locks Up
I had a lot of problems with my new XDA2i locking up after about 1/2 hour of driving with tomtom 3 and 5. I have been using a PQI 512 Mini SD with adaptor from my c500. Swapped to a Integral 512SD and my XDA2i has not locked up since.
The company that i work for import's the Mitac Mio and most of the lockups we see underwarrante cannot be reproduced, after some investigation with local customers we are fairly sure that the sd cards are causing the problems
Kingston 512MB (o2 Active) - lockups, quitting & now defunct
128MB MMC (o2 Active) - lockups, quitting
128MB MMC (corporate) - no problems
Apacer 1GB 91.B1007.200 (corporate) - none (only 2 days old tho)
EDIT: TT5 locked up this morning with the Apacer 1GB card.
The MMC card is one my wife purchased for her phone containing Robbie Williams' Greatest Hits and that we now use in "emergencies".
KingMax Platinum 1GB -- cheap 'n cheerful -- been working fine for 4 months via TT3 and now TT5
KingMax Platinum 1GB -- cheap 'n cheerful -- been working fine for 4 months via TT3 and now TT5
moby memory SanDisk 2.0 GB no problem when phone radio turned off ie (flight mode) otherwise locks up!
A-Data 1 GB - locks up, pain in the ass
Twinmos Ultra 66X 1GB - works perfect
Verbatim 512MB - works perfect
O2 ROM, locked up all the time
i-mate ROM, been running fine for 3 weeks now.
Hi,
Thanks for the replies, Please can you tell me, on the ones that do work can you recieve GPRS Data i.e. Traffic whilst using the TT5 or TT3 Software.
I can get any SD card to work with the GPRS off its when I use TT traffic it freezes.
I'm especially interested in the Imate Rom upgrade for my O2 XDA2i, does this make it work fully when using TT5 and Traffic?
Cheers
Lee
Got a 1GB SD card with 'DANE-ELEC' written on the front.
Always had lockups with XDA2i since i got it out of the box and put this SD card in it.
Locked up with the original O2 ROM, and now with the iMate ROM.
If i remove the SD card for a few days, i get no lockups at all. Put the SD card back in, and XDA2i will lockup within 1/2 hr
Avoid this SD card like the plague
been though a
kingston 512
lexar 512
sandisk 512
all lock up so far
although i think it is down to the GPS because i can get it to work without gps but as soon as it's involved it locks up
Thanks for the replies keep them coming, I have noticed a few people say certian types of SD work, can anyone else confirm these SD cards work on thiers too?
I am still a strong believer that the problem lies with the Phone, I installed the Tomtom 3 Maps (North UK) on the internal memory of the XDA2i. (didn't even have an SD card in the XDA2i)
It locked up, so how can any SD cards be the problem!
Anyway that is TT3 not TT5 but it is related to both versions!
Thanks anyhow.
Cheers

There is an update to TomTom 5 to fix known problems with PPC Phone devices.
http://www.tomtom.com/support/right...n/uk.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3361
Maybe this will fix it.
Nope it doesn't fix it .......
well it does in a way my xda will work fine ,connects updates (the phone is a bit dodgy as well) but as soon as it hits the wired gps it all goes pete tong and CRASH ,even if the phone rings CRASH
Well, I don't have the issues since I updated the ROM, apart from sometimes it won't reconnect GPRS until I turn on and off flighmode.

With the XDA II (not i or s) and the SanDisk 1.0GB, I have a different problem. In normal use it is fine, but long file transfers or streaming video/music from it cause it to drop out (not literally!) It just loses the connection to the card. Removing/reinserting is the only solution.
Don't know if this is related, but the SD card type caught my eye.
I have just tried the very latest Sandisk 1Gb Ultra III SD card in my XDA2i and it locked up when using GPRS to download Traffic.
The SD card boasts speeds of 133x (20mbits/Sec) Yet this didn't work so I have still yet to be confinced that this issue is down to the SD card.

SD card weirdness

Hey all
I just bought an SD card from eBay and I'm suspicious that it's an original Sandisk card... My first concern was about the box being decidedly homemade looking (and the card itself wasn't in any vacuum sealed container either) - but now I find I'm having trouble with it as well.
I couldn't find out what size SD cards are supported by my XDA2i so I just went ahead and bought a 1GB one. However, if I transfer around 512MB onto it - it then informs me that the card is 'full'? But when it's formatted and clean, it shows free space as 998MB... What is going on???
Any help is very much appreciated thank you.
Paul
1024mb unformatted, around 998mb formatted is about right.
I have a branded SanDisk 1gb card, and it's fine, there's no difference in file transfer speeds or use than with my high speed PNY 1gb card.
Although thinking about this more, I have read a few reports of counterfeit flash ram chips that report one size, when they are in fact much smaller.
It's apparently been reported on ebay many times where people have bought 2gb usb flash drives, and they are in fact 128mb, even though Windows reports 2gb.
Maybe you should see if you can get a refund?
Is there any way to check to see if the card has been tampered with in any way? It doesn't matter what I do with it, it continually reports being a 1GB card until I put up to 512MB on it and then it claims free space only up to 512MB?
Paul
Incorretct SD sizes??
What file system have you formetted the SD card as?
What size files are you putting on there?
Remember that there is always a lot of wasted space when using small files...
i've tried two 1 Gig SD cards in my XDA 2i now and both of them have the same thing go wrong with them
Seems the 2i doesnt support 1 gig cards properly and sometimes (especially when transfering large files) stop functioning and/or slow down to crawlspeeds.
Alot of the time mine has reported being full even though it isnt. Eject it then insert it again to fix it but the transfer will be rejected.
The only reliable way round it is to transfer smaller files, try Zip'ing the files into smaller chunks ?
I have a pcmcia 1 gig card, its an ata flash type, it used to give me the gig storage until i formatted it on an ipaq, now i can only get 512meg, nothing i do can fix it.
I've formatted it as FAT and I've transfered 56Meg of ScummVM stuff onto it, the rest are large 3ivx files (which are between 50 and 150Meg each). Thing is that I also have a Dazzle card reader which gives the same results? Mind you that's quite old now I guess...

Mini sd 4gb

Hello, I've seen on Ebay a minisd of 4gb.
Is it compatible with Treo 750v? Anyone has tried it?
Hey,
Ive tried one in the XDA mini S it works in mine, but doenst work in my dads? think its something to do witht he contact length on the actual mini sd card, the longer the better. BUY A WELL KNOWN BRAND!
Actually I believe it has to do with the either the operating system's or hardware's ability to address 32bit file allocation tables. 16bit FATs only address (under normal circumstances) 2GB volumes. I believe official SD specifications require any hardware requiring more than 2GB to be SDHC (SD High Capacity) wich addresses volumes differently than none SDHC hardware/cards.
So in short, without having first hand experience to try it, I do not believe 4GB cards will work on the Treo. I'm sure, however, that someone will quickly come along and correct me if I'm wrong ;-)
I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289848&highlight=sdhc and then found one on eBay from the link on that page. I won my bid and just paid for it. I should receive it within two weeks, at which time I will try to get back on here and let everyone know if it works for me.
My phone is actually a (UT Starcom) Audiovox PPC 6700 from Sprint, but I would guess that there isn't much difference pertaining to the miniSD driver and what it can/can't read. Also, I can't see WM5 having trouble with the FAT32 file system, but I could be wrong. You *can* format FAT16 up to 4GB, but it is HIGHLY inefficient compared to FAT32 at the same size.
I just hope MS releases a driver for SDHC support soon. After all, miniSD still uses the SD driver. The only difference is physical dimensions, hence why you can put a miniSD card into the SD adapter and it works in SD card readers. The pin-out is the same, etc.
Here's hoping all works well for me. I want to be able to ditch my iPod and only carry my phone.
I have not formatted a memory card with FAT 32. I do not know how WM5 will handle FAT 32 but I know that SDHC has more to do with addressing memory than simply FAT structure. There are hardware differences between SDHC and non-SDHC.
The physical similarities between the SD cards will not make up for the fact that they are internally different. Just like a CD will play in a DVD player but not vice versa. An SD card will work in an SDHC slot but not vice versa.
4GB SD cards do exist but do not fall within legitimate*SD card standards. They may or may not work based on the card manufacturer, the host device, and the direction of the wind. Keep your fingers crossed and your receipts handy.
main question open again
So coming back to the main question,
has anyone tried the 4GB miniSD card (they are all HC, FAT32 formatted) on Treo 750?
I am waiting to decide whether to buy a 2GB or go for the 4GB and come to the same capacity level as the iPhone (4GB version!).
thanks

4GB miniSD cards and the Treo 750
I've got a 750v -- had it for several months. I was using a Transcend 2GB 80x miniSD card that worked just great. No issues with "disappearing", pretty fast read/write, etc.
I wanted a 4GB card so decided I would try a SDHC card from Transcend. It does not work in the Treo 750v. Works fine in my newest PC card reader, but no-go on the Treo. Figured as much, but wanted to try.
Then I bought another 4GB card (non-HC) from eBay that was branded Topram. It suffered the issue of not being able to see the card on the Treo without doing a soft-reset first, and it was very slow in writing to it -- like 1-2MB/sec from a USB 2.0 card reader. Didn't much care for that.
Just recently bought yet another 4GB card (again non-HC) from eBay. It was a generic card. I'm getting 3MB/sec write speed from my PC card reader, which is slower than my original 2GB Transcend 80x card, but not as bad as the Topram card. On the Treo itself, it's read speed is about the same as with the 80x Transcend 2GB card, which was pretty good. Overall the Treo feels about the same with the 4GB card versus the 2GB card installed, in terms of launching Tomtom or playing MP3s.
It also does not suffer any "disappearing" or the need to soft-reset the Treo to recognize the card. I've ejected it many times and put it back it, and have never had any issues with this. I'm going to stick with this card for now, as it seems fast enough and isn't causing me any grief.
This card is shown here: http://cgi.ebay.com/4GB-MINI-SD-SEC...QtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110080023472
So, that's my (long winded) story on 4GB miniSD cards and the Treo 750v.

I just bought a 4GB mini SD from MobyMemory.com for my O2 XDA mini S. The first card would not register at all with the device. I sent it back and the replacement now at least registers (as 4GB) but after loading any sort of volume of data on the card/device it locks the PPC up!
What BRAND of 4GB mini SD card did you get working with your "XDA mini S" (and did you have any problems once you'd actually started using it to store anything over a few MB)?
Tresend 4gb mini-SD card doesn't work with Treo 750...
stay away from ebay when buying memory(card, flash drive, etc...)
90% of them are fake. Although they might work just fine, chances are it'll crap out on u eventually.
WISH I WOULD OF FOUND THIS SITE EARLIER.
Yeah I just bought a transcend 4 GIG mini-sd for my TREO 750. IT makes the noise as the TREO recognizes it but it doesn't show up in file manager. I have formatted it with my USB SDHC card reader, I can only select FAT32, and it shows 3.75 GIG.
NO GO ON TREO 750 (CINGULAR)
-anyone have any ideas on how to get it to work?

how long have all of you had the 4GB mini sd cards? i have heard of people having them working for a couple of months but they die after a few months.
thanks
I need to know too
Interested in topram as it seems to have the best rep
Didn't work for me :-(
I bought a TwinMOS 4 GB MiniSD HC Class 2
Can't get it to work at all...
If anyone else has a 4 GB MiniSD working can you post the details of it? Cheers!
I am using two 4GB TOPRAM mini SD since one week ago and I haven't had any problems. I bought them in ebay to Kofkl and Erkirkland. Do not buy to Mobilemem (not reliable Supplier).
well i had a 2gb right now topram, kind of died i believe, the computer seems to see something but just hangs and then says i either dont have a device in, or get an I/O device error i believe :/
but i was really looking into the 4gb topram one, but also want to know who had one for over a few months working still as some people reported them to not work after a while??
and were are the other manufactures that have 4gb NONE sdhc :/ MiniSD

I'm glad to hear that your SDHC card is working well. What rom version are you running and have you done any tweaks to your device? Also, do you use the Windows Media Player on your Trinity? I'm just trying to track down where the problems could come from. Thanks.
I bought a 4Gb mini SD from mobymemory. It came with a nice little adaptor/keyring too.
Unfortunately it kept corrupting data from day 1. Files and folders being deleted, then named with strange characters.
To give mobymemory credit they got me an RMA very quickly and refunded me within a week.
In the end I went for a 1Gb card from Crucial (as was in a desperate rush). £10 with special next day delivery. Wanted 2Gb but they weren't in stock that day.
MobyMemory's 4GB miniSD is working fine with mUn's latest WM6 ROM(2.0.0.SE), filled it up with music and no problem so far(some user reported that MM's 4gb card worked nice until it was filled with more that 2GB of data, so, I decided to test that with mUn's ROM).
With a previous WM5 & LVSW WM6 rom(2.0.0.3) I had a few issues, a couple of 100% percent data loss events lol, it hapened whenever I stressed the card, i.e. listening to music while playing a game installed on the card, power off the device while still playing the game( or auto power off if the music was paused ) and powering the device on again.
My MiniSD 4GB memory card worked fine for only one month! After that My trinity stacked and had to to soft reset wich time I pushed the start menu, all this with the old ROM without GPS.
I've inserted in a card reader, and copied everything to a folder in the host pc, formated the 4gb card copied again everything to the card, udated the ROM and is workig very fine so far, until when????
Kingston doesn't work - SPV does not see it at all.

Defragmenting Memory Cards is completely useless There is no Harddisk Head running around on your SD Card, so defragmenting is useless. And: SD Cards only have a limited count of read/write cycles which will be reduced by defragmenting them.

corrupted my 8GB Sandisk Ultra II after 3 days of use.
The card could be read INSIDE of my Raphael but not on my PC with different card readers. This would be a minor problem but my Raphael also destroyed randomly files on the card too.
I thought the Micro SDHC Card was defective and send it back.
Now I own a Sandisk 16GB Card and it got also courrupted in like 2 days of use.
Some file from my *Notes* was thrashed and other files followed.
Raphael will try to open the file and then stay busy. After like 20 seconds a message containing "There is not enough memory " pop up... (150MB free ram should be enough to open a 2 kb Notes-file )
Wierd thing -> My *old* Sandisk 6 GB MicroSDHC Card I own for more than half a year now works flawlessly... (Till yet )
Someone here got the same experiences ?
Someone got some advice for me ?
I read something about updated SD sdrivers from member Tucan which he cooked into a german stock rom. Are they any good for me ?
Is there a Rom which should solve my problems ?
Help will be really appreciated !!
im sorry but the new memory you have must be fake, that explains why it works with your old mem, and why after sending it back, the same place sent you another fake.
Oh lord here we go, I just ordered my 8gb MicroSDHC card from newegg since the Fuze will be out soon I hope this isn't a common problem.
I corrupted my 8GB once, but by my own fault. I was in the middle of a transfer and was connected as a hard drive, not through activesync, and hit the power button which disconnected it from the computer. I hooked it up as a hard drive again, went into windows and reformatted the MicroSD... No issues from then on.

I ordered both cards from completly different places, so that is unlikely.
They did work normaly (some days) even on my PC, so I guess it is my Raph which corrupted them

Oh man. I have the 16GB Card sitting here and cant use it... I will try it in my old XDA Trion (aka Hermes) for the next days ...
Anyway thanks for your replys !
Someone else has some thoughts about the problem ?
Maybe it has something to do with all the powersaving *features* beeing enabled through -Advanced Config 3.2- and -Diamond Tweak- ?
Well I'm using the same rom as you and was using an 8gb Sandisk card until I got a 16gb Sandisk card and both work flawlessly I'm afraid. I have also applied the power saving tweaks you mention with no ill effect.
using 8gb for about a month now, no problems at all.
Oh, I should mention I've heard many people talk about how there were a lot of Tilts that corrupted MicroSD cards. It was a flaw from the factory, apparently affected a number of them. I wouldn't be surprised of HTC saw some of the same issues with the Fuze, knowing all of the issues they've had already.
My 8gb card works just fine.
For reference, I'm using an A-DATA Class-6 8gb microSD purchased from NewEgg. Cheap, fast, reliable, perfect.
16gb bog standard San Disk Micro SD is working fine at the moment.
Formatted using Panasonic's SD Formatter as I corrupted it before I even put it in the Pro.
my 8GB works fine too
Maybe if everybody posts the brand name of their cards we can determine if this has something to do with the issues.
I remember with my Hermes I had to get a specific brand and produced from a certain plant to not have any issues. I still have my Kingston Micro SD from the Japan plant with no issues.
Using 8Gb and 16Gb of Sandisk with no probs on my Touch Pro.
Hi,
I may be barking up the wrong tree here but are you sure you have not enabled the Encryption setting under Settings. This will encrypt the storage card so it can only be read from the phone. Removing the card and placing in a PC or Laptop would show up as corrupted.
I selected it by mistake once and it corrupted my folder tree and showed garbage.
Not saying this is what is up but is worth looking at.
Personally I have a 16GB SanDisk card in my Touch Pro and it been OK. Been running for about 3 weeks now.
John
maybe the cardreaders from youre PC are not compatible with sdhc.
This is redundand and it may be opinion but im looking into buying a class 6 8gig. Is adata reliable? What company is the best in your opinions for what im looking for. Fastest?

Sandisk. Always. Forever. For my memory cards at least
FYI...
I put a 16Gb Sandisk in my TP on monday (5 days ago)... not a single problem with it and no corrupted files either.
I was previously using my 4Gb Sandisk card from my old Kaiser... which also worked perfectly fine.
Had a Sandisk 8GB card in mine, no problems. Now have a 16GB Sandisk, no problems.
For me I'll buy Sandisk, and only Sandisk, for my memory cards.
I have the very chip you described in my kaiser (class 6 a-data 8gb) runs without a problem. I've never really had much problems with microsd chips but I gotta admit I got a little worries when this thread poped up not so much about the chip but the phone itself, I've never had a bad chip in my life bought about 20 or so thus far, the a-data does well in terms of speed nothing to be excisted about but for it's class and size it holds its own.
