XDA2s Keyboard - General Topics

Wrote the following to TOMTOM
Dear Mr.T.Tom
I have an o2 XDA2s
1) The installer of TTNAV5 gives me the option to install post codes to main memory, SD card or internal backup store. However the full postcode selection only works if I place the post code file into main memory. On my Pocket PC this consumes about 25% of my machines total memory. Please fix this so that I can locate the Post Code file on the SD card with the map data and free up the wasted resources.
2) TTNAV5 does not fully support my hardware keyboard, when I try to enter numerics the function key used generates foreign characters with TTNAV5 - please fix this. It sometimes works (when accessing the full post codes for example) but not always.
3) Because my Pocket PC has a hardware keyboard SOME areas of TTNAV5 do not give me the option of selecting a soft keyboard. It appears that the code which displays the soft keyboard icon checks for a hard keyboard and if present is disabled. I never use the hard keyboard on my PPC as it is too fiddly and furthermore - when the PPC is in its cradle and I am navigating in car I have to remove it from the cradle to use the hard keyboard whereas in TTNAV3 I could simply use the soft keyboard in cradle. Also removing the PPC from its cradle disconnects my wired GPS receiver! all very frustrating...especially when the hard keyboard is not correctly supported. The strange thing is that in other areas TTNAV5 automatically assumes I wish to use the soft keyboard ... odd logic there.
All together an excellent piece of software with 3 irritating little bugs which I trust you will fix as soon as possible.

Recived this back today
Dear Mr Littleton,
Thank you for your feedback
1. Our software developers are looking into this at the moment.
2./3 The software is detecting that there is an external keyboard.
This has been passed to our development team for them to investigate, At present we do not have a solution for this.
As soon as we do have a solution it will be posted on our support website.
In the meantime we thank you for your patience.
With best regards,
The TomTom Customer Support Team

...alternative...?
I have the same 'issues' with my TTN5 installation...
I wonder if anyone in the forum knows a way of DISABLING the built-in keyboard?
From what I understand, there must be a driver, hook, or DLL that can be altered to prevent its use (and more important) the detection of the hardware by TomTom...
The thing is, I wouldn't know where to start!
Can anyone else shed some light?
R.

I may be wrong - but my impression is that this is a specialized code shop. That is, tell them what you want to do and they will write the app. When you are satisfied, pay them $4.99. I assume they will make their money by offering that, and all other apps they write, for sale for that same amount.
Am I correct? What's the prize for sleuthing the intent of this (somewhat cryptic) thread?
Right!

It is impossible to have gps navigation without gps. It is possible to have a location based system using the gsm repeaters but this is not as accurate as a gps sytem.

Hi SP,
Is it for any type of software that runs on PPC? eg. maybe I want to have WarCraft on my XDA2, does it still cost the same?
Do I get bug fixes before I pay up? How about enhancement request?

Unfortunately, I don't have WarCraft source codes and I have no desire for re-writing the WC. I can propose you the terminal services client enhancement tool that will allow you to run your WC over the PPC device.
Regarding the type of software, it can be any software (even web-services, drivers and etc). Such big projects as games and other will have more reasonable prices and terms. Make your order first and then you will get the more exact conditions explained
Do I get bug fixes before I pay up?

Bugs-free software is guaranteed by 99,9%! On the other hand, you will receive two versions of the software. One is a preliminary test version to get your feedback on implementation and to amend your recommendations. The other one is a final version after which you shall make the payment. But if you found a bug, then the free fix is on the way to you!
How about enhancement request?

It's up to the technical demands. If your request requires to re-code the entire software, then you will be notified about such re-coding and it will cost the same sum. But if it is only couple of design or small functionality changes, then there is no fee charged. This provision is in effect prior to final version.

It depends on your preferences. If you prefer to deal with PayPal, then let's it be PayPal. You can use WM, EP, bank transfers (SWIFT/WU) or credit card remittance

First steps with WM5 for Palm User (on French)

Here is my post on French
and here a quick translation :
Well, the step is again crossed. I say again because I had made an attempt with Ipaq a few years ago and had quickly made a return behind .
But this time Palm with Tréo (750) under WM5 help me to cross the river.
Here thus the report of my first steps of beginner under WM5.
I write this Post because I will have agreed to find some contribution for beginners.
Certain points will seem to you very basic and even useless but if I had had them under the hand that would have helped me a lot to begin.
Installation.
Relatively simple to install.
But a problem was obvious dice the beginning: how to recover my data managed by PalmDesktop (8 years of appointments and contacts).
Well I needed to invest . I bought PocketCopy from Chapura. Main issue at the beginning. The transfer of my appointments did not pass. An e-mail with the log to the support of Chapura and a very complete response in 12 hours which allowed me to solve it (I really recommand this support ), but sad to have to invest 25$ just for a one shot.
Until there all goes well but I very quickly realize that synchronization is not highly reliable . (very often my PC does not recognize any more my Tréo). After bad issues I downloaded ActiveSync V4.5 (it is the preceding one which is delivered out of standard) and since that seems more stable.
After the installation you have on your PC an application which opens when you connect the Tréo to the cable.
It is possible on a simple click to explore ithe Tréo (simpler than under PalmOs)
Two ways of installing a program:
• downloading a exe file, while launching it on PC and while validating its installation on the PDA,
• downloading a .CAB file, copy it in the MyDocument folder in the PDA and while launching it in the PDA (with the file explorer of the PDA)
First steps:
Dammed, why PalmOne did customise its Tréo without taking account of the advantages of ease of use of these past Tréo models?
Where are the icons? Where are the buttons which make it possible to telephone, to send a SMS in some clicks without stylus?
Well, very quickly learned how to appreciate the menu to start and the button X which closes the programs (or rather very often minimizes them) but at this stage I am still very disappointed.
Finally I quickly wanted to recreate me a Tréo 680 like.
To build me MY Tréo.
The calendar: it is as bad as the one of PalmOs. Thus I wanted to choose a good PIM. I tested PocketInformant, Agenda Fusion 8.07, diary one, Agendus (never been able to install it). For the moment I retain PocketInformant.
Then I wanted to recreate me a true telephone keyboard with simple buttons (mute, wait, etc).
I found a track here. I then downloaded the excellent Memmaid program and all these accessories (I could recreate me menu with my own shortcuts and the possibility to simply make softreset (and hardware) without opening the small trap door which hides the button reset of which I fear brittleness).
With Memmaid I was able to unsinstall the standard phone’s functions of Tréo 750 in order to install anew Dialer which I have chosen here. Be careful the manipulations are a little it “hot” and you must all backup well before .Danger !!!
I maid so many manipulations of this kind that I completely crashed my Tréo 750 (no more telephone, no more synch). I have to make a complete reset (more than an Hardware Reset) (pressing lengthily on the red button + button reset then pad upwards)
All returned perfectly in the order. It is really well done.
Other customization:
There exists as a native a tool of assistance to the writing of the words which proposes at the end of some letters the appearance of words to be clicked. Quite practical except that the dictionary of words is incremented automatically even for not desired words (careful with the confidentiality) or with mis-spellt words. I found a small freeware very practical Dictionary Editor and well done to remove or add words.
Another point: it is not possible (or I did not find) to protect a note as under PalmOs what posed Pb to me to protect from the leading notes. I thus installed another small freeware well fact which manages and makes safe the significant data: cryptocard.
Here I am now. At your disposal for your questions.
Have a nice Sunday

Hi, I love the idea of this program. I got it to work fine with the WinMo start screen. But can't seem to get FpseCE to work with it. Using the same two phones (kaiser+HD2) am I missing something?
Tried assigning the hardware keys for use with FpseCE but with no luck, then resorted to pressing randomly with less luck. It's connected fine, thought I might have something set up wrong with FpseCE. Any help I'd appreciate, thanks.
Try to type in a text editor. If that works, which fpsece version do you have? I use the supporter.
To asign the keys in fpsece open the controller.screen and tap/double tap on the button you want to set (Do not press on the number!) Then ibstead of the numver on top of the button should get '--'. Then press your button on tge Kaiser and it should change to a number, thats it.
I've tried all that, I use the latest supporter version with Simon Mallions theme. Perhaps changing the theme back to default will help, i've tried everything else. Works fine with writing sms and word mobile, just fpsece not registering any key presses. Thanks for the reply, I'll try it again with the default skin.
I am currently reworking it. With a udp support, plugins etc.
UDP will allow to use it with your computer without bluetooth or use it over wifi if you phones do not have bluetooth.
I am currently fighting agains problems with bluetooth streams that may delay the Video Streaming of the other device

Hi SciLor,
congratulations for all your projects. They are really interesting starting from FuelBlaster to WinMoBlue. You are an "insane" genius!!
I have tried WinMoBlue on my Blackstone (controlled) and my PC (Windows Server 2003 sp2 bla bla bla .NET Framework 3.5 SP3) but doesn't run....
In this case running the PC part doesn't start nothing. In the event viewer this error: Generate Activation Context non riuscito per C:\Programmi\SciLor\SciLor's WiMoBlue Server Desktop\32feetWidcomm.dll
The server part on Blackstone starts but naturally doesn't find nothing to connect...
In reverse mode (PC controlled - HD controller) there is no way to take control too. In this case it the PC returns error about bluestack not supported.
As Bluetooth device i use a CONITECH DAKOTA Bluetooth 2.0 EDR USB Dongle Class1 based on Broadcom Widcomm driver v5.1.0.1700
Hope this can help you for future development. Keep it updated: it has many prosepctives!!!
NiceOne
Nice to know that you like my projects
I think the bluetooth driver I use does not support your dongle .
In the next version (which is under heaving developement and may come in the next weeks) I will additional support wifi, so you may try it over wifi l8er. The best thing will be, plugin support, not only keyboard input, but also mouse input. AND a video stream from the other device .
GREAT SciLor: YOU ARE GREAT!!!
I've subsribed this thread and so surely I'll test your next releases.. ;-)
NiceOne and Regards!
Any possibility of having it so you press a touchscreen button on the phone and it corresponds to a button press on the other device.
Example:
Phone has a picture of a NES Controller on it. Tapping the A button on the screen presses A on the controlled device, thus allowing it to emulate various gamepads.
I am currently recoding WiMoBlue to a Remote Controlling Software with Plugins.
Adding such an plugin will be very easy I will try to add it!
its an improvement for the touchscreen games. i'd love someone to connect a joystick or a bt keyboard
This sounds awesome, ill keep an eye on this, wifi will make it even better
It works!
Hi Scilor, I have tested it with sucess, but with a few small problems, some that I will report after more tests, and some are in the end of the reply. thank you to keep working on this project.
I've controlled my HD2 with a smartphone, the HTC S711 AKA VOX (winmo 6.1) and it works well with FpseCE, but unfortunately not yet writing messages.
Small problems:
1- Some hardware keys still works in the smartphone after connected and not in the HD2, wich was annoying becouse sometimes I've unintentionally closed the program in the smartphone.
2- the "Fn" key doesn't work.
Thank you and sorry if I wrote something wrong.

[Q] Switch between keyboard layouts

Hi,
I already read about the option to remap some keys by editing the keyboard layout file. Is it also possible to switch between keyboard layouts as you type (using a hotkey) - e.g. I need to be able to quickly change between Cyrilic and Latin keyboards.
Thanks.
I think you're talking about hardware keyboard.... But keyboard apps like swiftkey allow for 3 allow for 3 languages simultaneously.
Sent from my ICS Splashed MT4GS using xda premium
Oops haha double post
Hi indeed, I was talking about the hardware keyboard, if it is not possible to use both cyrillic & latin keys and quickly switch between them, this would decrease the benefit of the keyboard for me and I might decide to go with a non qwerty phone in the end.
Thanks for you insight though.

In this dev thread: Hardware Key Mapping | Flashable zips & Requests
...user Paitor has come up with and explained how to implement swedish language support for the hardware keyboard.
Given what Paitor has figured out how to do, it is absolutely within our ability to sit down and make exactly what you are asking.
All it takes is someone willing to sit down and invest the time into actually making it happen.
I would volunteer, but I have a lot on my plate already and realistically it's just not feasable for me to do this and keep up with my other projects on this device.
I will however be willing to take a finished keymapping and turn it into a flashable zip file and update the first posting of the key mapping thread with the result.
(and I always credit the author both in the installer package and thread post)
We still have to write in hardware keyboard language support for other languages, and I invite anyone else who wants to use alternative languages to read that thread and see about putting some time into helping us make that available for everyone. What you want to do is not exactly a small project, but pushing what we know to the next level is the reason for XDA's existence.
So, short answer is yes, what you are asking for is completely possible - you can make a key map file that has all of the keys in the languages you would want.
This is XDA, where you can get exactly what you need right down to the last little detail - if you want to put the time into making it happen. We'll be glad to help out where we can along the way.
--------
Edit:
If I were to tackle this project - this would be my approach:
Some apps, like Drocap2 or soundhound, pop up in the list when you have the Genius key remapped to 'search' and long press it. If there is nothing else that utilizes this shortcut function it will default to the only app that does ( in the case of a stock installation or on my ROM, voice search ).
So what I would do is write in each hardware keyboard layout that I wanted, then design an app that utilizes that Genius shortcut function to run - and the sole purpose of the app would be to switch between hardware keyboard layouts.
To me, that seems like the most elegant and refined approach to your problem without making one monstrously cumbersome key-mapping.
You could just press the Genius button to access the app wherever you happened to be, and then have it just show a menu as an overlay to swap between whatever keymappings you wrote in.
--------
My time is being invested in my ROM - then once that's set to my satisfaction, on to kernel work on overclock/undervolt leading into GPU work in conjunction with TV-out, and then on to bluetooth work for controller support on a Sense device.
These are big projects and very time consuming undertakings, so as you can see a project like this keylayout issue is a long time coming before I can get to it - but i'm happy to help where I can for anyone who wants to dive in and do.
Figured i'd throw out what my approach would be to give someone an idea on where to start - and while certainly not the only solution, is something to consider.
I think I have very good news for you!
There's a keyboard called "AnySoftKeyboard" (search for it in the Market and click Dev Website if you want more info) which supports hard kbd mapping (and switching bet layouts by pressing Alt + Space), they have a Russian language pack (Cyrillic & Phonetic), and it is all free.
I have never used it, but remembered coming accross it a while back and decided to check it out for you.
Hope it works
Hey guys, thanks for your replies!
I will definitely check this application - i am not sure it supports all hardware keyboards in general (or just the g1/droid as written in the description), but I will give it a try if I get this phone
And yes, I will gladly help in creating a layout for a Bulgarian keyboard. Unfortunately I cannot create an application for switching between the layouts myself, as I am not a developer.
thanks again.
AnySoft does work
Got my phone and installed AnySoftKeyboard. It does allow for switching bet layouts on the MT4Gs, but does seem a bit quirky so far... (that's with Hebrew & English, you might want to experiment yourself)

Question [G100] [fixed] Change physical keyboard disposition

Hi, I brought the G100 for the useful Ready For (desktop mode) feature.
I tried multiple apps and it's really easy to use
Advice : Opera has a default desktop mode ; I disable auto open link to keep in the browser instead of auto open the corresponding app (Google Drive, docs, sheet, youtube...) ; Parsec gaming is realy good to control my PC remotely when I need more features.
Anyway, the only problem right now is my physical keyboard. I'm French and the disposition is not right.
It's in azerty mode : that's good
But all other keys (1..0 &@!?:;.....) are placed like in qwerty mode. It's hard to write, especially for the accents éèà...
I tried 2 keyboards : logitech K800 with the dongle plug in a hub ; and a bluetooth keyboard given by my internet service provider.
I hope my question is clear.
Thank you
Clément
When you plug in a physical keyboard, there should be an option in your notifications about the physical keyboard, you should be able to make changes that way, or in the phone's settings.

Thanks, I can change the layout but the French keyboard or wrong (I don't know the other languages).
I ask in the Lenovo forum and as a bug report for Android 11 too. It seems to be an issue with Android 11.
Last news : "I'm happy to report that we will have improvements coming in a future software update. I don't have the timing, but it's coming."
I posted a comment on the Lenovo forum and there will be an update...
It's fixed with the last update
Hi, where do you "plug in" the keyboard??
