Serious Problem encounted when Backup ROM image !!!!....HELP - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

After I successfully backup my O2 Mini existing ROM to the SD Card by the romupdate.exe. I used the ntrw.exe to convert the Image in the SD card to my computer. However, when i excute the command
> ntrw read backup.nb1 X:/
it return the followings..
>could not open backup.nb1 -- the volume does not contain a recognized file system. Pleas make sure that all requited file system drivers are loaded and that the colume is not corrupted.
I have tried other card reader (both 1.1 and 2.0) other computer and other SD card ( i am using LEXAR and Kingston 256 ) but the problem exists.
and the romupdate said the d2s command was success.
Why will it happen and
What can i do to fix this problem????
Thanks for your help....

You need to use a card reader and the drive X: should be the drive XP allocates to the SD card slot on your reader.
XP Assigns my SD reader to I: unless you have a lot of network drives on your PC it should be somewhere. The card needs to be in the card reader slot obviously and not the PDA.
I am also assuming that you are trying to write the Rom to your hard drive and not writing it back to the SD?

Hi there, looking at the dos screen you took, its telling you that you have already a file with that name in the folder. look, delete that file... and then try again... i had that problem yesterday. Now im struggling to upload the rom.

by wrong command also, it creates the nb1 file. so do DIR and see that .nb1 with 0 bytes will be there. delete it and try again!

SD Card problems after upgrading to 1.12
I posted this in the normal form but no one replied, I think this may be a problem causing my upgrading, so I post again here
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The SD Card used for dumping rom with ntrw could no longer be accessed by my notebook which was accessable before(I formatted the SDs already with my mini), it needed to be formatted, after I did that, and plug the SD into my mini, the mini couldnt read it and prompting the SD card needed to be formatted again!
So, I formatted it again with my mini, but after that my Notebook want to format the SD again, and the fight between them keeps going...
anyone encounter the same issue...there are some clues that I tested:
1. I got 3 SD cards, 2 for them used for upgrading and they occured the same problem, but the third one which is clean can be accessed by both machine
2. The SD cards(those with the problem) can be read by my PC's Card reader...
I know I could use the card reader instead, but I dont wana waste the build in one in my notebook and the data exchange between my Notebook and mini is quite important to me, pls if anyone could help me solving the problem, Many thx!
Hi, you must use ntrw in comand window ( in winxp run cmd )
Take ntrw.exe and your file.nb1 in roof directory.
Type the command C:\ntrw read rom.nb1 x: ("x" is your cardreader name)
Ignore any error message when you plug SD card into your cardreader.
After that you type d2s in next window, so on...
When finish you will have file .nb1 in your roof directory.
Hope you successful !

Problem with Rom Loading from SD card....

Hi, when I upgraded my rom I encountered a small problem. I have loaded the rom from my MDA to the SD card. But when I tried to use ntrw command, it just did not work. The command I used is "ntrw read Tmobile.nb1 i:". However, I just got the message "Usage: ntrw file drive:" on the screen. I supposed the problem is in the filename I used, "Tmobile.nb1". Now I am in the UK, and this is an English 1.12 WWE rom. So what should the file name be? and how can I get NTRW work?
I am sorry for the dummy question. I did search the forum, trying to find the answer to my question, but could not find any. Please help and tell me how to solve the problem.... Again, my apology for my ignorance....
I did a little research on google and found that the file name of the rom on the SD card can be randomly given. Therefore, the command I used "ntrw read Tmobile.nb1 i:" should have worked. And I am sure that the sd card is on drive i:.
Now I really don't know why I cannot load the rom from the SD card to my PC? Can anyone help....
My card is Sandisk 1.0 gb. Can that be a problem? When I tried to upload a rom file from my pc to the sd card, it showed: "unsupported media type"......
This is weird cause i've got the same problem "it just says ntrw write file usage" and i use a sandisk 1.0 GB card too.
I guess the software u using is corupted, try to download again in FTP but make sure use diffent one. Because there are many software with the same name, but some of it is not working perfectly.
Thx for your reply, mate!! Now I found the problem. As you said I used the wrong software. I simply use the ntrw.exe file from the upgrade guild folder. However, that one is not compatible with either windows sp2 or usb 2.0. I d/l the ntrw 2.0, and everything is fine now.
Thx for helping

If you have problems with your memory card in 80% of all cases the controller of your card is damaged and no software or card reader can help. You must separate the memory chip and dump the raw data to recover your data, look here: CF xD SD memory card/stick photo recovery
Repairing a corrupted SD card.
If the SD card is corrupted then it will be because it has boot sector errors. Download DriveRestore Professional and you can scan your corrupted card for errors... you can then repair the card's errors when the product is activated. You can download a free trial at: www.pcrecovery.com/driverestore
don t format in the name of GOD!!!
Please all keep in mind>>>> drive recovery pro is a nice solution, but formatting a hard drive is ok,and important.NOT A SD CARD!!!The continous files are different from the usual hard drive files!!
NO NEED FORMATTING!!!
In fact>>formatting an SD card lower the life time of the card with a good year or more!!Anyhow they made to survive only around two years!!!
The continous upload and erase sssions are killing the SD card.BUT FORMATTING IS TH BIGGEST KILLER.Check the experts, what they say???
Corrupted cards can be deffected from factory as wel,but drive check and restore is the best. The sectors are damaged, and not the fragmantation....
helios
Repairing a corrupted SD card.
DriveRestore Professional will not re-format a corrupted SD card. Formatting is NOT recommended as formatting will erase all the data on the SD card. DriveRestore Professional will analyse the boot sector (that ALL drives have e.g. FAT16 and FAT32 file systems on an SD card), it will detect errors in the boot sector and then repair the errors. When the card is repaired, ALL the files will be accessible and the card is fully repaired.
Sometimes the filesystem on the card gets corrupted. It can happen for example if the card was ejected while a file operation on it was in progress. When that happens you might have trouble accessing some of the files, loading times for some directories in file explorer may be very slow.
You can attempt to fix it using the desktop windows' built-in chkdsk utility.
Open up command prompt (start->run->cmd.exe) and type
chkdsk /X /F <SD card drive letter>
My SD card reader is X:\ drive, so i wold use the following command:
chkdsk /X /F X:
SD card reader is recommended, but probably not necessary because it should also work with WinMo's built-in USB mass storage function or wm5torage.
Under linux you can check/fix the card's filesysterm and in some cases undelete a file using fsck.vfat or dosfsck (single tool, two possible names). Refer to its help for more details.

I only recently became a (sort of) expert on this as I had a corrupted NTFS bootable partition on my macbook pro with a messed up Master File Table. Man, that was a nightmare.
Anyway, the answer to this question varies greatly depending on the filesystem and the type of corruption you have. Standard Chkdsk might work (the windows utility) although I admit I have no idea how well that works on flash removable media.
Other good options are TestDisk, and there are some other free options out there.
Depending on how important your data is to you and how severe the corruption is you may need to go with a paid application. This is what I had to do because Master File Table corruptions in NTFS are particularly nasty (although some versions of them can be corrected by TestDisk). I recommend GetDataBack which worked great for me.
In any case, try TestDisk out because its a very powerful tool and it is totally free. Read up on the documentation before playing around with it though, because you can cause irreparable damage to any one of your disks if you don't know what you are doing. Ideally make an image of your card using dd (built in linux utility, just type 'man dd' at the cmd line) before attempting to fix it so you can't do anything you can't undo.
hey i formatted my card using card studio in qtek 9100 it formatted 100 % but when i attached it on the card reader then to PC! PC doesn't show this cardddddd help meeee
Instructions
things you'll need:
* SD Card
* Computer
* Internet Connection
*1
If your aim is to repair a corrupted SD card so that you can use it to store files then proceed to step #2.
If your aim is to recover the files on the SD card without erasing them, proceed to step #5.
*2
Insert the SD card into a digital camera card slot and choose to format your card. If this doesn't work then move on to the next step...
*3
Place the SD card into your computers SD card slot.
Right click on the SD card drive letter IF it appears and choose to "format."
If this doesn't work, proceed to the next step...
*4
www.sdcard.org
You will need to go to the website
http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/eula/
Here you will download, install, and run the program to format your SD card. This is the most advanced step of the three, but most likely to work 99% of the time.
*5
www.cgsecurity.org
If you want to recover files ON your SD without erasing them, then you need to download and run the software on this site.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download
This is the best free software available for this type of problem.
thanks mr deimos for the chkdsk tip.this tip is way quicker fix than the programs mentioned in other posts in this thread
yeah, thanks guys for all your advice and help

Thank you for this, saved my uSD card after flashing a kernel messed it up!
On Linux you can try dd_rescue. It creates copy like normal dd but it does not abort on errors.
Copy card to file and then mount this file like drive
Thanks for the chkdsk /X /F
I just had a currupted sd card this morning and was banging my head until I saw this and it fixed it.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help for upgrading to wm 6.1 via SD card Flash

My USB Mini port seems to be damaged. I can charge the phone but when i connect it to my PC, the orange light lits and the phone gets charged but it is not found by my pc. So pls let me know how can i upgrade to wm 6.1 through sd card flash.
The solution is:
U need
ntrw ftp://xda:[email protected]/Magician/Tools/Backup_tools1/ntrw.exe
wm6.1 nb1 file http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=02c513f13b6fba677f7ec40ada4772a6e04e75f6e8ebb871
If the 1st method doesnot work then u need the backup of existing rom Click here to know how to back up ur exsiting rom http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BackupExistingRom
the hex editor http://www.hhdsoftware.com/Download/free-hex-editor-neo.exe
Method 1:
write to the sd card using
ntrw write Cotulla6.1.O3.nb1 F:
F: is ur sd card drive
There will be an error saying parameter incorrect. dont worry. Insert the card into the phone and enter the bootloader( Power+Camera+ SOft reset). A message will come asking you to press power button to flash. Press the power button and wait for complete flashing. in the end there will be a error that checksum failed . dont worry and do soft reset. Hurray u now have wm6.1 on ur magician.
Method 2:
If this doesn't work try this.( U should have a backup copy of ur old rom nb1 file.)
copy the first 416 bytes of ur old rom to the 416 bytes of the rom downloaded using hex editor
write the new rom to the sd card and install as in method 1.
It's not possible to install my rom via SD card.
Sorry, it designed for RUU flashing only.
I was wondering this myself...
Are you sure, Cotulla, that following this procedure would fail with your ROM?
Please someone try and if sucessful pls upload the .nb1 file so that i can write it to SD card and flash it through SD card. Thank you in adavnce
I can dump my ROM for you if you're willing to test to flash it.
please. i will try on my o2. thanks
Here it comes: click. Password is xda-developers.com.
the file appears to be too small only 23 mb . coutulla's rom was somewhere around 50 mb. will this work. i will try tomorrow as i am outside & donot have pc access
That's because of compression, the file itself is 63.7 MB.
I was planning to try this as well, but I don't have a memory card at the moment.
Keep us posted and good luck
As MusikMonk stated, this file is compressed and crypted with 7z. Haven't you heard of 7z yet? It's about time!
I doubt it will brick your Magician, since it's not overwriting the bootloader. Thus you can always flash you beloved old ROM.
While writing the file to the memeory card i am getting this as output.
NTRW v2.00
Removeable media
Cylinders: 0:120
TracksPerCylinder: 255
SectorsPerTrack: 63
BytesPerSector: 512
bufsize is 65536
WriteFile(): Cotulla6.1.03.nb1 -- the Parameter is incorrect
When i put the memmory card in my PDA and enter the bootloader mode only the screen with Serial and v.1.02 is there and there is no option to install press power button.
You must have done something wrong when filling your SD card.
I get that "press power to flash" message.
I hope someone will eventually try to flash that file... otherwise I made a lot of effort for nothing :-(
So does it work or not???
I used 1 GB Memory card. The Problem Might be because of than. Pls Letme know what memory card u used. Shold I used 64/128 MD card instead of 1 GB. Pls Help
64MB is a few bytes too small, 128MB is sufficient. I used a 256MB card... maybe the boot loader is unable to read much bigger cards... if my 16 GB card were empty I could give it a try... ;-)
I tried to copy the Cotulla.nb1 file on my SD-card, but it doesn't work. I used a 2gb and 128mb card...
I copied the ntrw.exe and the Cotulla.nb1-file to c://user/username. Then I write "ntrw write Cotulla.nb1 j:" in the black DOS-Window and press enter. j: is my SD-card.
Now there appeare some lines of text and I can wait about 3 minutes until there comes something about a wrong parameter...
But as I understand it, this should be no problem.
But the problem is when I try to take a look on the SD-card, there comes a window, that says that I must format the card. I cant open it... When I take out the card from the card reader and put it inside again, I can see what is inside on the card. But there is only one folder with the size of only about 130kb and no ROM...
My OS is Vista.
What am I doing wrong???
Magician boot loader does not expect any file system on the SD card, thus ntrw writes the OS directly to the first sectors of your card. When you insert this card now anywhere Windows does not find any file system and recommends to format. That is correct (as long as don't answer yes) and shows writing WM6.1 was successful (given your card is big enough and failure free).
To make clear: you shouldn't be to browse that card in Explorer when you wrote WM6.1 on it.
Ok but if I put the card out of the reader und back again I can browse the card and there is nothing except of an 130kb small folder...
And if I put the card into my magician on bootloader, nothing happens...
What could be the reason for that?
I tried with 256 MB memory card I am gettin gthe same message while writing to card.
NTRW v2.00
Removeable media
Cylinders: 0:120
TracksPerCylinder: 255
SectorsPerTrack: 63
BytesPerSector: 512
bufsize is 65536
WriteFile(): Cotulla6.1.03.nb1 -- the Parameter is incorrect
And when I enter the bootloader mode with the card Inserted I get the message:
SD Download
==========
Sections=1
Not allow
update!
But with the same SD card when i write my old ROM( whic i had backed up) I get no error and when I insert the card and enter Bootloader mode I get the message :
SD Download
==========
Sections=1
Press Power to Flash
This means that there is some problem with the nb1 file . So kindly someone try it and post the results
one more thing. The backup.nb1 which i backed up from my sd card is 243 mb big. So i feel that the nb1 file which U extract from your card should also of around the same size and not 65 MB. Correct me if i am wrong.
I tried to extract nb1 file after writing ur rom to my sd card. it is also 243 mb big.

[Q] How to format a micro SD card.

How to format a micro SD card.
I had a HTC Touch Pro2 16gb micro sd card that has about 14gb on it. It was starting to get really slow to copy any size file to it. so i copied off the full contents to my pc (with the micro sd in a card reader) and in windows explorer, did a right click, format, format fat32. I seem to remember the size wasn't exactly correct but cannot remember exactly. format went really quick and i started coping back over my file. the copy stopped saying there was not enough room. tried another format and now it says that there is just 241kb of size (my only option in the drop down), File Systme Fat is my only option, and Allocation Unit Size FAT is my only option. I do not have a Volume label. Any thoughts? Would love not to have to buy a new card.
Try to format in FAT32 once more and do full format, not Quick. preferably via PC

True that. Had the same problem once. What I did was to use a different SD Card reader and delete off the contents first before trying format (non-quick).
If that doesn't work, google for an alternative sd card formatter.
Download Ubuntu Live CD and run it w/o installing. Connect your Cardreader and start the Program "Gparted".
Now you can format your SD-Card in many Datatypes, maybe Windows is faulty at your Cardreader, but with Linux it should work fine.
Ubuntu Download: www [dot] ubuntu [dot] com/download/ubuntu/download
P.S.: If Gparted is not listed in the App Drawer, get it from the Ubuntu Softwarecenter by simply searching "Gparted".
Hi,
Here is a tool what will make formatting a SD Card easy. Just download this tool and select Full erease. Then it will be okay. Also partitions which are hidden are now ereased try it and let me know!
Tip: Search in google SD Formatter 3.1 and select the first link!
The SDFormatter 3.1 did the trick. Windows XP formatter had no options for Fat32 and only saw 224kb of my 16gb micro sd card. The SDFormatter 3.1 recognized the full 16gb. Not really sure about the options. Even though there are only three the FULL options did not seem to work at first but after the quick my card was formatted, windows saw 16gb, copied my data back and now my phone is good. thanks.
