After much screwing around trying to find a car kit, I finally remembered to check the most obvious place and bought the official O2 kit from Expansys. It arrives in a few hours.
Figured I'd ask if there is anything I should know about the installation or use of this kit. I've installed car kits before, and the photos look pretty standard. Any oddities? Is the stereo mute standard or reversed?
I think I've read before that this kit mutes the radio when the GPS speaks, is that correct? And if so, does it quickly un-mute when the GPS stops speaking? It could be useful if the mute/un-mute time is prompt.
installation is straight forward, i think the mute signal is normal, i have left mine disconnected now as everytime the pda made a noise it muted the stereo, is better just to turn radio down when you use the phone. i use tomtom sat nav and you can hear this okay over the radio unless you have it on very loud, which i don't when i'm using sat nav anyway.
Macca,
Any chance you could post some pics of the installation. I am just about order a XDA II car kit - although looking at the THB version at the moment, and still undecided.
Thanks
Rich
unfortunatly i have just changed my car and haven't installed it in the new one yet, i could take a picture of it i suppose in the car with someone holding it there, i mean it would look the same???
it maybe a few weeks before i get it fitted properly as it is an old merc that needs some work doing on it before i go putting stuff in it.
i'll put a piccie up in the next day or so.

im looking for some gps software that would be suitable for motorcycle use , i allready have a garmin gpsII and have made cable to conect to xda 2 , now im looking for software , any suggestions , how suitable would tom tom be? note xda mounted center of dash area.
thanks in advance
ia
I can't see why TomTom would be unsuitable, it works on-foot and in-car, has a very simple touch-screen interface for quick access.
I bought TomTom for my car, but I'm current driving my motorcycle full-time so I occasionally use it on my bike.
I'm using the TomTom Bluetooth and with the Bluetooth GPS unit in one pocket of my riding jacket and my XDA in the other it still routes OK when I'm on the bike (but I can only check it by pulling over :-().

TomTom should work fine on a motorcycle, unless you use a headset then the voice prompts won't be of much use though. If you haven't already sorted a mount for your XDA then take a look at Brodit's new waterproof PDA case and motorcyle mount. It's based on an Otterbox and is the ideal housing for all weather m/c use.

here you can find the same otterbox but with a beautifull premounted handlebar bracket...
I boutght it for XDA2 and it works perfectly for it and FZ6, with fortuna clipon in the front or in a bags......

I use my Qtek with a BT rikaline gps and tomtom3 on my motorcycle everyday. The devices are both under the transparent plastic cover of my tank bag, so the touch screen still works (despite some reflections, but still ok). For audio direction I use a wire headset installed in my helmet (BT devices I've tried will not play directions, only phone com.). I installed a 12V socket so I'm never out of battery. When I am on a long trip on motorways I can play some music so it is really working quite well. And this installation is easily removable, so I can use it in my car or elsewhere. That's it ! ;-)

I use a nice rubber band.
TomTom 3 does it for me
Just returned from my 5wk/9000km holiday on the motorcycle with the GPS in the tankbag and the XDA behind the tankbag window and TomTom3 giving directions in my helmet. Mainly for this I bought the XDA and TT and I was not disapointed at all.
It worked super; in the evening planning the route over minor roads -the only time I used paper maps- and next day just driving on the directions in my ear and on the screen leaving all my attention for the scenery and the road. Not only the navigation but also the POIs where great: gas tank almost empty, just navigate to the nearest gas station; time to stop for the night, just navigate to a camping.
1 minor disadvantage was the cord to the helmet for the audio which I regulary forgot to disconnect (luckily I had a spare cord). I hope someone will come up soon with a hack for the XDA to redirect the regular audio to BT.
Ronald
thanks for all of the above , ive decided to go with tomtom and i think ill go the extra way and get a bluetooth unit,
what do we think of the TomTom Bluetooth wireless GPS receiver , any good, is it worth spending any more on another model , whats the battery life like on this model, and can you run it off a 12v feed? and is it happy with the xdaII and whitch bluetooth stack?
prob looking at the below from expandsys

I've got a motorbike (well 125cc scooter but i ride it every day of the year and to every place i can). I use a gps unit and personally i wouldn't bother with a mount, the bike is too open for it and really would any waterproof stuff work properly or make it simply too bulky. Also, if the mount was to fall off (maybe not applicable in a car but alot more bumps and vibrations on a bike) then you'd risk breaking your xda 2, not cheap !
My setup is just the xda in its leather case with a fortuna clip on bt gps unit (which worked first time), i stick the xda in my inside jacket pocket and the small gps unit in my side pocket once it has a signal. Beauty of being bluetooth, i leave it at the window side to pick up a signal while i'm putting my gear on and then just stick it in and get on the bike as it already has a signal ! Genius!
I run a single headphone up through my helmet so i can hear the directions and after one or two rides you'll get used to how it works and not have any problems at all. Also the temptation to take your eyes off the road to look at the unti is too much and i wouldn;t like to do it.
There you go my 10pence worth from someone who does ride a bike and use a gps.
Oh also, i use navigon navigator after using tomtom3 for some time. Very fast routing even if you "forbid" motorways. tomtom would take an age to route big distances if i set this. Also has a nice tip of saying "take first ext on the roundabout onto the A4400" etc, which is good when your a bit uncertain as you can always check the big signs used by the goverment !

The Brodit Otterbox M/C solution is IMHO much nicer, the mount is a machined metal bracket with a quick remove clip to allow it to be affixed/disconnected from the mount easily and it has a cable out facility to allow connection of a charger or GPS etc.
See here .
Does screen toggle work with TomTom software? What I mean is that I usually use IntelliNav that came with my Belkin Bluetooth GPS. I toggle the screen off with a Media Player configured hardware button, and listen to the directions through the headset in the helmet (while the PDA is in the Pocket).
Personally, I don't feel like making a mount on the motorcycle for the XDAII, and I wouldn't want to take my eyes off the road to look at it either.
I've tried Mapopolis, but the voice instructions are HORRIBLE, and they've disabled screen toggling. The same is true with CoPilot Live Pocket PC 5.
It's absolutely imperitive that I can shut the screen off, and still have audible INTELLIGIBLE navigating instructions.
Does anyone have an audio file of what the TomTom software sounds like?
Do you mean the screen backlight? If you toggle this off then TomTom continues to work and announce direction changes etc.

I mean the power to the screen.. so that there's no light and tapping it does nothing. If you want to do me a favor to test it... In Media Player, go to Tools>Settings>Buttons. Then from the "Select Function" pop-up menu, choose "Screen Toggle"... press a hardware button to assign the function. Uncheck "Un-map buttons during background play." Then run TomTom, and press the hardware button to turn off the screen.
With Mapopolis and CoPilot Live 5, the screen goes off, but then comes back on right away. I hate it!!
perhaps anyone else encountered the same issue - i don't know any further with this:
after flashing the o2 xda mini german with the bigstorage rom from: ftp.xda-developers.com/Magician/BigStorage_ROMs/DE_O2_1.12.01.zip
via sd/boot-method the speaker doesn't seem to work anymore correct.
it seems like the speaker on the back of the magician is only working when a call comes in, but not for alerts, sounds or a mp3player like mortplayer or wmplayer.
also the speaker and the mic at the front of the mini aren't working.
so i flashed the device again with the original rom, but it isn't working anymore, also not with all the other available roms.
so i tried to adjust the preamp with no success.
let's see if i wake up tomorrow without a bell
I believe you have a hardware problem and has nothing to do with the ROM. There are threads and a PDF file showing how to dismantle and fix the speaker contact.
hmm i don't think so - why should it play the ring sound when someone calls? i also checked if it is the speaker on the back side which is playing the ring sounds - and: yes - it's the one on the back side
No sounds after just 6 months of use on my O2 Xda II mini!
Hi lindsche:
I also have the same problem - no sound coming out of my O2 Xda II mini EXCEPT for the ringtone for incoming calls. I have not installed any new software on my device and I have only had and used this device for 6 months! The only way I can hear anything from the device (including phone conversations) is through the use of the audio ear phones. I have been in contact with O2 Technical Support from the Asia Pacific Region (where my device was purchased) who have been suggesting all kinds of different resets stuff to no avail thus far.
By the way, where is the speaker located on this device??
Any advice would be much appreciated.
yeah, i think its hardware too, i had the same experiance with my wallaby (siemens sx56). The problem was from the audio jack. There is a small switch inside the jack that stuck so the device thinks that you are using handsfree. i tried to plug and unplug it but it make the problem worst. if been looking for the jack parts everywhere but couldnt find one. so when i got my new magician, i always plug and unplug the handsfree very very very carefully.
to upcityhighroller and lindsche: i believe your problem is in your audio jack. if you able to hear the ringtone, but not able to hear phone conversation and other sound, that means your phone thinks you are using the handsfree. best think you can do is check inside the jack with flashlight , make sure its clean and nothing stuck inside.
as per someone else's advice found in this forum, i tapped the device against my palm and the sound came back! i'm very happy EXCEPT now my power button won't work!! my temporary solution is to unlock the buttons so that I can turn on the device using any of the other buttons but now I also have NO other way to shut the device down! (I'm force to wait for 2 minutes of inactivity before it shuts down.)
Any suggestions??
Many thanks!
Not able to pick a phone call using handsfree ear phone.
Hi !
Bought O2 XDA mini, a couple of weeks ago....
I am not able to pick any call when handsfree is connected to O2 mini. I can the hear the ringing tone and listen MP3 too using the handsfree....
I have tried the handsfree on another O2 mini phone and is working absolutely fine...
I called the O2 service center and they asked me to do hard reset....
If it still does not work, they have asked me to give it to service center for repair...
I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem... If so, what is the resolution.??
kindly share your views... thanks.
-Raj
hey i had a simialr problem.......even i hard resetted but the problem persisted.....but when i charged my battery it worked fine...i guess our phone doesnt accept calls if the battery is below 20%
I was desperatly searching the net for a solution and did what you guys were talking about and tried cleaning the headphone jack, i recommend using an air compressor and while u have music playin in media player just gently blow air into the jack, and if that doesn't work try a little more air, the air seemed to clean most of the dust and whatnot that had clogged it, i just had to give it some firm but gentle taps with my palm and and it works fine now. Releived, as i was just about to buy a second hand replacement
Have the same problem with my Mini.
Couldnt hear and be heard during calls, brought the phone to the service center,
they replaced the hardware yet in the end they couldnt figure out whats wrong.
Im using 1.12 right now do you think it would help if i upgrade or downgrade my ROM?
Need your inputs on this guys!
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Finally I've managed to get one of those phones - as a replacement for my Exec (best phone EVER! IMHO) and here I am!
I really want to change ROM ASAP but I might have a problem with hardware so want to check that first before doing HardSPL
- is your speaker really quiet? To the point that you can't hear TT/hands free?
- while playing teeter does your back cover gets hot? (in area of the speaker, battery is cold)
- sometimes no sound while playing teeter (possibly other games but haven't tested that yet)
- can you hear "gsm noise" every so often from that speaker? (don't know how to describe it, basically same noise as from other speakers when phone is connecting to the GSM BTS)
I'm still using Official UK O2 rom
many thanks for your help!
Cheers
Chris
XDA Serra
Hello!
columb, I have had my XDA Serra for just over a month now, with changing of the ROM, I'm not sure if its entirely necessary unless you need the standard one for a particular reason! I do recommend downloading the youtube App and quick gps patch from o2 if you want to use gps. I use copilot live 7 and its really good, fab phone! I upgraded from a XDA II so quite a jump, similar to the exec not quite as good tho!
With regard to your problems, I'v checked these with my friend who has a HTC Touch Diamond, (the non o2 keyboard-less version) and his is the same.
- My speaker is not the loudest in the world but still very audible
- The phone gets warm on the back when doing anything intensive, not to surprising considering the processing power/graphics of the phone, and after combing the manual found that o2 say that it is completely normal, just warm not hot.
- I always get sound with teeter unless system volume turned down ( obviously) so not sure about that one (be aware system volume is still separate to ring volume as on previous windows mobile)
- I don't get any GSM interference with the phones internal audio on any channel, not sure about that one again. There may be problem with your internal speaker.
The O2 rom isn't that bad, I'v compared it with the HTC rom seems to be just as responsive, if perhaps not quite as good looking.
Hope thats been some help!

XDA Serra
I am also using Serra.
speaker is not loud but it is acceptable for TT with voice.
try search "audioparam3.csv" in the forum you may get louder volume.
And I saw a thread in the forum cut backcover of the phone to make it louder and sweeter.
EXEC has two (or three?) speakers and it is very chunky so it has excellent stereo sound quality. However I couldn't imagine how to use it as a phone. It looks like a laptop or a brick.
I feel that most customized ROMs here are better than O2 one and you can always burn it back to original ROM anyway.
backcover does hot sometimes. I guess that is RF Radio module near tweeter area
Same problem
not sure if it helps but i have exactly the same ploblem with my phone.
the digitiser stopped being reponsive so i took mine in for repair. o2 took a month to fix it they did a half asses job and put in a new digitiser bur left the glass laminate which is coming un laminated and has a washing up liquid effect in the middle of the screen.
anyway when they repaired it they also upgraded the software' last night i had to make a call in the car' not having paired it yet with the bluetooth stereo i used the loud speaker. after 10 seconds or so it all went quite. i toggled loud speaker off and on again. it came back for a few seconds and went again.
i also get pops from the speaker occasionally and can here the same gsm noises at the end of calls.
the phone never did it before the rma and software upgrade so its going back.
just thought i would let you know its not just you.
i think some of the earlier hardware has an issue with the latest O2 rom.
For some reason my phone decided to stop allowing me to hear the caller on the other end unless I have them on speaker or switch over to my bt device (though, the caller can still hear me). Has anyone experienced this problem? I believe the problem started this morning when I installed Skyfire (I received a message saying something about sound issues, but the warning went away before I could understand what it said), but I may be wrong. The main speaker works perfectly fine and I have no issues with any other phone sounds. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi, i have the same issue since i own the phone.
The speakers sold at gsm4world are only for the back of the phone, i didn't find a replacement "earpiece" (correct word?) by now. Since i don't use the phone for calling, that didn't bother me till now (my gf wants to use it).
Maybe i will dismantle the phone during the week to see if its just a cold solder. If i get the partnumber i'll post or maybe another member comes up with a solution.
Phone dismantled and tested
Well.
I dismantled the phone yesterday and tested the speaker. You can do so yourself by simply using a 3,5mm headphone jack. Cut the cable open, connect the shield to one side, the white one on the other side. No sound --> speaker broken.
Afterwards i connected my 3,5mm cable directly to the board an plugged in into the microphone-jack. Receive a call an you can check whether the board is ok. i could easily record the call so there is no problem on the board itself. I assume its a production error.
You can order the spare part speaker at gsm4world.us für 8$, other sites offer it for 25$ and more. It's listed for the Diamond but don't worry, should fit as my colleage owns a diamond and allowed me to check - looks the same and works flawlessly by connecting directly to my 3,5mm cable.
Unfortunately i live in germany so it will take a while until i receive it. If i finally get my hands on it i will post my findings (in any case )
So the speaker arrived and i can only say: IT WORKS!
get a diamond earpiece and peel off ALL of the protection, because it is 1-2mm thicker than the original one.
Thats it After 1 year of ownership my raphael can actually make a call!
After that it was directly taken by my gf
I want to use HTC Desire with Car Kit Parrot CK3200LS. The only thing stands agains this is MUTED Parrot's microphone. Pairing is quick and stable, I can hear person who I'm calling, but nobody hears me because mic is MUTED. The same story with every ROM.
Could somebody advice me where to look for solution of that problem?
What version is your Parrot CK3200LS? As Parrot CK3200LS seems to work fine for me, What roms are you using are they all with HTC sense?

Parrot's soft version is 2.12c (most recent), LeeDroid_v2.1a_A2SD, AOSPDesire_1.5.4, Neophyte_1.8, Stock FROYO, DeFrost_4.4, AuraxTSense_7.6.1. I've tried many ROM's - the same story.
What is your ROM, which works good with CK3200LS-COLOR?
I'm having a problem with the CK3100. Not every time, but quite often, when I hang up the phone, the display on the phone and on parrot indicate the call has finished but phone is still displayed in the dashboard and the radio/cd etc remains muted.
Sometimes, if I dial another number or take another call the radio will come back on but often the only sure way to unmute the radio is to durn the engine off, take the key out and wait 60 seconds before starting the car. This is quite inconvenient on the M25!
It also happened with an HTC-620 and, occasionally, an Orbit (Artemis) but never either of my Nokia phones. AVR mobiles who installed the car kit have been particularly unhelpful; their advice is to try another phone.
I wondered if anyone else has had this problem.

Exactly the same problem - not very often but you're right its damn irritating... As a workaround I've installed simple switch on the red +12v switched cable that is plugged in to the fusebox. This way I can quickly powercycle Parrot when that problem happens or turn it off when I leave car for longer periods at the airport. It shouldn't drain battery at all yet somehow it flattened my battery when I was away for 2 weeks.... and I'm sure everything is wired correctly...
