Newbie planning on flashing Vodaphone VPA Compact - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

I have just recently ordered the German Vodaphone version of the i-mate jam and should be recieving it within the next few days. I have been eyeing this forum for ways to flash it from German to English. I've seen a number of different threads, some quite long, and it seems as though the procedure for flashing has changed a bit over the months.
I'm a bit lost, so I'll write what I think I understand, and hopefully someone will come along and correct me before I make a brick out of my new baby
It appears that there are 3 sections to the firmware. The ROM the Extended ROM and the Radio firmware.
-I believe that the VPA comes with Radio firmware version 1.11 which I understand is the latest. That is language independent and can be left untouched.
-The ROM is the actual OS. I need to download an English ROM and MaUpgradeUt_noID, and follow this procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=19504
-The Extended ROM confuses me the most. I am guessing that this is where the vendor specific software is loaded (vodaphone *this*, vodaphone *that*, anything else that is not standard with WM 2003 SE) Is this correct?
If I flash the main ROM, does the Extended ROM stay intact? Do I loose any functionality? Are there any common pitfalls or any things to keep in mind as I try to do this? What's a worst case scenario?
If searched the forums but I've never found all of this stuff in an updated form all in one place. I'm thrilled to be receiving my first windows mobile phone and would hate to end up with a brick on the first day
Thanks in advance for any thoughts, info, or corrections to come my way.
Steve

If you flash only the main ROM (OS) yes your extended rom will stay intact.
From my understanding, if you flash the OS ROM that is the same version as your Extended ROM then you should have minimal problems. Eg. You have GER OS ROM v1.11 and Extended ROM v1.11 and you flash ENG OS ROM v1.11 – this should be ok because the extended rom has the updated patches for the OS ROM v1.11
But you may have software problems if eg.You have GER OS ROM v1.06 and Extended ROM v1.06 and you flash ENG OS ROM v1.11 – this is because the patches in the extended rom are not updated for the OS ROM v1.11
Therefore, if you want to mix and match, I think you just need to check that your Extended Rom version is the same as your OS ROM version then you should be ok.
I would recommend to backup your extended rom before doing anything, just incase you need the patches. Use Loadvdisk.exe to unhide your extended rom folder (located in root -\) then use activesync or fileexplorer to copy them to SD card or something.
Hope this helps.

Are original black Touches not able to be flashed with these roms?
yes they are... it indeed a bit confusing how he wrote it.
if i am using htc black and use the one for black and pure white, is there anyway for me to use pure white instead of the black one?

actually its not he who is confusing ... he wrote exactly the way is written in the htc website ( dopod asia )
Which one for italian htc touch?
I have the italian versione of htc touch p3450.
I tried to flash a rom but something went wrong.
Now it doesn't start: on the startup screen (smart mobility) there's written "OS 3.7.0.0" in red. It is stopped on thi screen and nothing happens.
I tried soft and hard reset but nothing changed.
Now i want to flash with its original rom and bootloader, but there's nothing on the htc website (i searched very well).
So... which of these ones i have to use? I tried them all but none of them worked. One said something about my device "vendor id", and so on...
Does anyone can help me???
If not, i can throw away my touch....
Thank you

OS version
Can anybody confirm the OS version in these ROMs? Is it 5.2.1933?
regards,
Does this work for the Sprint version of the HTC touch?
i have tried flashing the green version but it said invalid id after just two percent.... is there any way around this? thanks!
People we got work to do.
If these are for the new Touches with more memory we might run into some Pagepool issues.
I'll grab the white and make Big storage without removing anything this weekend.
Anyone else that's going to Make big extract and re extract. Change the Pagepool and see if it sticks
TOM_CODON we might need your know how of Using original XIP information on these for Regular Touch devices.
I woulnd't flash these to regular touch just yet.
But i'll post a big storage version of red version tommorow anyway for our new Touch Voque or whatever it's called, users. There's a thread in main.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342180
I think it would be a could idea if we petition a new thread for the new devices to save some newcomers confusion.
Whoever wants to take the risk can flash it to regular touch.
**** it flashed it anyway.
Extracts fine with Artemis settings.
Flashes fine.
I think as long as we don't touch the Different Pagepool values it might just run fine on Touch.
Just finishing Big storage for Blue version.
I'll upload all three tomorow.
I'll check out the Ext Rom later but first back to my own ****.

It should yes. And it does yes. But it wasn't intended no.
Don't forget to use USPL method from first Elf threads before flashing Big Storage versions.
I'll do a few test by using the regular Change Pagepool method to see what effect it has on the Rom.
If people are nice i'll consider making versions with 6 tabs enabled but first i have to check the HTC home Plugin version.
Euhm looks like new SPC rom's delayed again sorry
Well nothing new in Ext rom.
Only the slightly patched red version is different but green still had default HTC default theme. And i asume they all have.
This looks alot like that other Rom from before 5.2.1933
Which might explain something.

My ROM is the original 1.11.405.1B WWE, can my Black Touch work with this Rom? There're any improvement (speed, available space...) in this Rom compare with the original one?
Noonski!
I thank you for interest to these versions!
The original red version has caused in me a problem. On phone now it is not possible program soft-reset. Loading of system stops on splash "Smart mobility". Button Power gives the same effect.
Well to execute Soft-reset it is possible only a pencil(stilus).
After that, updating of another rom, does not help.
How to cure?
I am sorry for my bad English!

Well looks like the exact behaviour i had with that other pre 5.2.1933 rom.

Upgrade from one official ROm to another, though with a different language?

I have a Kaiser with a Swedish ROM and now that there probably will be a new official ROM soon (many hints of end of february) will I be able to flash the official ROM to my swedish Kaiser or will I have to wait for a swedish version or use a hacked official ROM (ie with language check removed if there even is such as check)?
Many thanks in helping me figuring this out.

i dont see why u shouldnt be able to flash the update (my guess swedish wont be able until summer) i you have hardSPL, if u dont have hardSPL (you still have the stock-rom) you will be able to flash swedish rom if you have a swedish phone.
The language is in the ROM, not the phone. If you flash an English ROM, you get English

Of course.
My question is: will a phone currentlt running a swedish OS accept me flashing it with a english ROM without me altering anything?
Or is there like language check that goes "if current os=ENG then accept flash, if current os!=ENG then don't flash"
I'm just hoping to be able to flash the updated official ROM without having to use any special tools, cooked ROM, or any other funny stuff

UK Vodafone Magic Root & Rom summary/help.

OK just spent a significant amount of time reading your forums and im nearly there just wanted some clarification on rooting and choice of roms for a UK Vodafone Magic as there doesnt seem to be one collection of advice for UK voda's. Here's how I think it goes please correct me!!
1. Root using haykuro’s method and files in the wiki. (Did read a post about uk voda users then having to flash a rom because reboot didnt work fully.)
2. Update the SPL according to the same wiki article. This is where its hazy!!! I am now left with a rooted magic with stock rom, (ie uk voda in my case.) an updated spl, allowing me to now do a full nandroid backup of stock rom or only a backup of installed apps only???? See where im getting confused??
If I then choose to not flash a rom to my Magic I am now running my stock rom (or a haykuro rom.) but with the added bonus of it being rooted, which in-turn allows me to run those useful apps available in the store, bluex, setCPU etc???????
God am I going mad!!

You and me both I'm in exactly the same situation as you, with the same decisions to make and same questions. I personally wouldn't mind installing a stock ION rom (or maybe the Japanese version since I speak English/Japanese) but essentially would like to know what you would like to know! Before I change my SPL though, I'd like to know if I can back it up.

I haven't rooted mine yet either.
As a vetran of WMO I am a bit confused, but basically I think you can't root and keep your original Vodafone rom.
To do this, someone would have had to have produced a rooted version of this rom and no one has.
you can install the latest generic ion rom rooted.
if you want to go back to vodafone you'll have to find the rom.
The other annoying thing is that you can't do a rom backup without rooting it .... duh!
if I am wrong, someone please correct me!!
As i feared!! so the rom for rooting your magic also replaces the system with the haykuro ion rom. So as yet there is now way of keeping/backing up the original voda uk magic rom. (To revert back to at a later stage or if you f**k it up!!)
So this now leaves us uk voda magic users with the question which rom to go for which has the same functions as the uk voda rom. Ive read about the main ones ion r3 lite, nk02s htc beta 3, the rodgers and most recently the hero rom. Sounds like the community is really geting going!!
I am looking for :
1. wifi
2. bluetooth
3. 3G
4. Google sync
5. camera (as ive heard some roms dont support it.)
6. market (once again some roms with problems.)
7. superuser (obviously.)
8. Location
9. Voice is a bonus but not essential as uk voda does not have it
OK so i want it all lol, So far the Ion r3-lite looks the most suited but i cannot confirm the camera works so come on you clever ppl help us uk voda's out!!
Thx

but it appears you need to root before nandroid
and to successfully root, you need to install ion, otherwise it won't boot
isn't this catch 22 ?
Thanks Brian im probably going to give it a go tomorrow and go with the ion r3 lite rom to start!!
But once again to clarify you just pointed me to a link showing howto back up the rom by using the updated spl and nandroid backup function, to do this your magic must already be rooted and as you stated earlier by rooting the magic you will therefore replaced the vodafone rom with the ion rom. So a backup at this stage would be of the ion rom and not the stock vodafone rom. Am I correct???
If I get stuck i will be sure to take you up on your offer or further help. Thx

OK colonel so you have a success you followed the guide at " http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting "

So you now have a rooted uk voda magic running on the original rom?? As well as a backup of the original rom, meaning that you can now flash custom roms to your hearts content with the reassurance of being able to flash back to the original voda rom if you should wish.

indeed - exactly as you say
I had no issue with the rebooting problem mentioned elsewhere
although I don't intend on running a custom rom yet.
I did it purely to get root access, inititially to follow superxnova's excellent guide to get other language fonts (I wanted hebrew):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480964
** Make sure you select the option to make a backup after the command typed in step 11 **
One other thing I would say, the instructions are precise until step 14&15
instead of doing step 14 & 15 I went into fastboot mode by - step 10 (then back button), typed the command in step 11,then pressed update. After update i selected reboot.
not sure if that made any difference as "home + power" does the same thing
3g Gone
Hi - i've managed to root today and to install the new some new roms - thanks to all of the wonderful advice here. One thing I have noticed is that I lose my 3g capability with any rom apart from my original vodafone rom. I'm not too bothered as I can restore from a nandroid backup. Would be nice to be able to use the SuperHero v2 build i've currently got working (apart from the 3g).
Thx.

1) i need to hardspl it so i can flash any other rom into my phone, flash the new rom that i desire etc.. and the important question is.. if i want to completely reverse my phone back to the original stock condition, stock hardspl / stock rom etc (like from the 1st day i got it, very very stock and original). I know i need to flash back the stock hardspl and stock rom and so on... So after all the flashing will my touch pro be like a really original stock touch pro??? Or will it be i am only flashing another rom but it is an original stock rom back to my device... Anyone understand what i mean???
2) Actually i need to ask about the radio thingy but i think i'd better wait for my 1) answer, cuz if i can't get my phone back to the original stock condition after i flash some wm6.5 rom in it i might not want to risk flashing...
Any advice are appreciated, thanks
hardpsl is a one time thing, once you flash it, you dont need to keep using hardspl to try new roms. when you want to revert to the original rom, just go to HTC singapore's site, under support, go download the rom. it will be the singtel wwe rom. if you're worried about warranty, there shouldnt be an issue, i reflashed the singtel rom to my phone before sending it to harborfront for repair, and there was no mention of me reflashing the rom, and they repaired my phone as required.
ps, you dont really need to read all 80 pages of the thread, just get to flashing. hardspl, then try the energy rom (thats what im using) and see how easy it is.
cheers,

new to Android and confused

Hi everyone,
I promise I´ve tried to search through stickies and and everything. But I´m still a bit puzzled. I just entered the Android world after I lost my 4th iPhone in a row (1. stolen, 2. downed, 3. replaced. 4. stolen). So now I own this Sensation EX and started playing around. I have to tell you that I´m having probs with all the abrevations and everything, but I´ll try to get my head in the game. I´ve already managed to root my device and I was looking around for what I could do with custom roms. Then I stumbled accross this "Radio" thing which seems to be what the baseband is in the iphone world. Do I need to update the "Radio" in order to get the latest roms with ICS working? How do I determine which version of what piece of software I do need?
I bought my HTC stock with no branding at all.
Hope you don´t mind me asking.

I never used an Iphone and I'm new to android, until now I used windows mobile but I can tell you one thing, more or less all smartphones have same "software". That is usually:
1. OS and 2. Radio
You don't need to flash radio in order to get custom rom or any other rom. In WM you could flash both at the same time (in one package) or separate. Separate was better because usually most of people wanted OS changes and you cold not brick your device (unless you did something stupid) but when you flash radio, you'll have to make sure you do the right things or otherwise you would end up with a very expensive brick
Basically, flash radio only if you are having issues with signal or dropped calls etc.
So, check the forum and find the rom you want to install, read the thread carefully and install that rom and keep away from radio if you don't have issues I mentioned above [if it aint broken, don't fix it ]
You will need the newest radio for the ARHD ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14192842&postcount=4
To update the radio follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412618
Radios on Android are totally interchangable and slightly region dependent. As in, some work better in some places, others work better in other places. It's more or less a trial and error thing.
However, the new ICS roms that are based on 4.0.3 will require the new firmware package which includes the new 11.x radio. If you're just flashing gingerbread roms, you can leave the radio as it is.
