Having read everything I can find on unlocking my XDA2 and following countless instructions, I've come across another problem (apart from failing to unlock the XDA), and that is, with the unit in boot mode, I can't communicate with it from my Pc.Active sync reports a USB error every time. Someone tell me what I'm doing wrong please.

Hi,
After a mounth of problem caused by my mini-usb connector, I weld it this morning. But, I cannot sync it by usb anymore. I have to sync it by bluetooth. Anyway do you think there is a possibility to upgrade it with an SD card or another solution?
I thank you.
Hi,
My first thoughts would be..
"how am I going to charge the battery",
pointless pursuing an upgrade in the circumstances?!
STI
I don't see charging being an issue, as he may very well have power even if not data running on his connector, and even if that's not the case, there's plenty standalone battery chargers on ebay. Not the perfect scenario, but grab a second battery if you don't already own one and it's suddenly way better than tossing you uni.
About the SD card ROM loading...
I've seen a few posts on it, but I reckon the SD image is always created by dumping the current loaded ROM.
So, I imagine you'll need someone else so make you an SD image of the ROM you need/want.
As for the actual dumping of the OS, I never did it, so I can't really help you there.
It's not about the uni, but here's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=899768&postcount=8
Still, as I told you, I believe you'll need a third party to supply you with the ROM dump, and even then, be damn careful that you both have the some devices (i.e. both G3 or both G4) as it probably matters.
Take this as a hint in (what I believe is) the right direction. By no means I can guarantee that this is the only way to go about it.
Best of luck!
I have the same problem with my HTC prophet device...since i upgraded to wm6 , problem came when I activated Wm5torage
I can still charge it with my usb cable but nothing more...I`m looking to download an SD image backup from somebody
If somebody can help ...
I have the same problem, having replaced the socket it also just now charges and shows in windows as an unknown port. I have checked all the connection on the PDA motherboard and everything appears OK when measured with a meter. As windows recognises that there is a port there, it seems likely that the clock and data are available. If this is the case, it should be recognised. I can only assume that somehow the OS has become corrupt. This seems to be quite a common thing, and it would be nice if someone could throw some light on why this happens.
If the clock and data are available, meaning that the two computers can communicate, you should be able to reflash the device, since Bootloader mode circumvents the OS, and the RUU has it's own drivers for communicating with the device, evidenced by the fact that it shuts down ActiveSync to avoid interference.
Try putting the device into bootloader, then initiating a flash. If there's something, anything, wrong with the dataport, the RUU will be unable to flash. If the ROM Upload starts, the it will probably finish too without a hitch. And you'll have a new working Uni.
Also, it is not possible to flash via SD card, since the SD port can only be used with the appropirate drivers loaded, and that's done by the OS. Flashing is done while in bootloader mode, which circumvents all of the OS, and uses a separately stored on board program to access the main ROM, screen and dataport.
It is possible to flash a new Rom via the SD Card.
It does however require another device to dump the image onto the SD Card first.
Search the forum and you will find specific details on the procedure.
I believe Midget made a post about the process not so long ago.
Also could all peeps please keep these sort of issues in the upgrading section, you are more likely to get better answers there.
This forum is meant to be purely for WM6 on the Universal.
Cheers,
Beasty
Yep, here is:

Whoops sorry am getting a little off topic here. Anyway boot load will not work so port is probably faulty. Got a version of WM6 on it anyway, so will use as is.
Hi everyone.
After much searching I seem to have got nowhere. Can someone please help.
My mda compact 2 starting playing up yesterday, rebooting on its own, so I tried to install the upgrade from tmobile (ruu charmer). The upgrader stopped and my mda now has a screen that only either says serial v1.02 or usb v1.02.
I've tried rebooting it several times in several different ways without any joy, the screen just remains the same. I tried connecting to my laptop via active sync, but its like it doesn't exist anymore!
I'm about to give up after hours of trying to fix it, so any assistance in very simple terms would be much appreciated!
problem solved
Seems like my problem must have been too basic or too common for anyone to bother to help, so I did some searching myself throughout this site and elsewhere.
However, what I found was thoroughly misleading and unhelpful.
The error messages are also inaccurate and totally misleading. Error 274 might mean pc can't connect to pda, but it also means other things, like your using the wrong upgrade firmware!!. Having serial v1.02 or usb v1.02 on your screen does not mean its a grey and black brick(useless), its simply the upgrade mode screen.
Basically, I made an error in choosing my upgrade. I chose the wrong firmware package from t-mobile thinking what I had was a mdacompact 2, when it actually was just a mda compact. This error was the main issue, yet from this forum I had the idea it could have been a number of things.
One important thing to remember is adhering to all the instructions regarding the installation of the new rom.
Don't bother unless you do the following:
1) Make sure you have a good connection via cradle or usb lead when doing the download.
2) Make sure you close all unnecessary programs on your pc.
3) Dont touch either your pc or the mda during installation.
4) Don't give up after you read misleading rubbish on the web.
5) Make sure you download from the web the correct upgrade firmware!!(very important in my case!)
6) Active sync is not totally necessary during the process.(I turned off usb connection in its setting during my installation).
Hey
I have the same Problem
i tried updating the software on the phone but now i get that screen..
Im still stuck on what exctly to do, I've been googling it for hours!! HELP!!!

I posted the following item in the "Beginners instructions thread" last week, but only one person has responded. I am trying to repost again in the hope that more people will see it and that someone will have experienced this previously:-
I have read countless threads on this site and have finally decided to upgrade my O2 XDA from WM5 to WM6.
I have found the instructions for doing this, but have fallen at the first hurdle.
The mobile update utility cannot connect to my Wizard, (error 222). I am still able to sync with active sync, so my pda is seeing and being seen by the pc.
Is there anything that I can do to at least get started please?
P.S. I have tried downloading lokiwiz, but that doesn't work either. I tried searching google for it, but that only brings me back to this site.
Is it actually possible to upgrade or am I missing something really stupid?
P.P.S
I have now done a hard reset. The only thing that I have changed is the date and time. This is now an O2 Exec, completely as it came out of the factory. I am using Active Sync 4.5. Why can I not connect to the button rom?
im not too sure what your issue is but i think you will get an answer on ppcgeeks.com. i use this site and that one. you have a lot of experts between the 2 sites
Thanks aman1127, my main problem is that the mobile update utility cannot connect to my Wizard, (error 222). I am still able to sync with active sync, so my pda is seeing and being seen by the pc.
I have read all the warnings about turning your Wizard into a brick, I can't even get it to do that!
I have checked the help tab on the Mobile Updat Utility, but that gives me "error 404"
Is there a proper way to upgrade my device using software and instructions that are up to date?
I'll have a look at the other site as well. Many thanks for your help.
Hello this is my first post I'm writing because I'm having trouble putting Hard SPL
on my ATT Fuze. I have XP and I connect the phone to the computer and sync it
then open the SPL program go through the prompts then my screen on the phone turns off, the phone I believe also turns off and I get the error 260 a screen pops up on the computer saying it found new hardware. Any help with what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.Im kind of freaked every time I get up the nerve to do it and think I bricked my phone.
Did you install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 first?
Here is the link to follow steps incase you didnt see it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008
Hey thanks for your help after further reading I know I should have posted this in the right section and yes I have framework 3.5 installed I guess one question would be that I installed 3.5 to the computer do I install it to the phone? Also I have been reading the hardspl post I think one of the ideas is to first install the SSPL manual
to the phone is that correct? Then do the hard spl? If this is corect what do they mean by install it? run it? active sync? sorry just want to get this right
This is from memory - so if i miss something, sorry!
You shouldn't get any error messages when you connect your phone to the pc, regardless of what boot state the phone is in.
The manual jump SPL is to be used if your phone doesnt enter the correct state automatically from the RRU.
If you want to use the manual jump SPL, do this:
1) Connect your phone to the PC (ensure it can sync correctly - no connection errors)
2) Copy the SSPL_manual to the phone
3) (on the phone) run the SSPL_manual file
3b) Phone should now go to a blank black screen
4) Run the RaphaelHardSPL-Unsigned_190_1_3.exe on the PC
4b) Follow the PC on-screen instructions
**However**
you say that the phone turns black / screen off when you run the exe normally - this is supposed to happen. You shouldnt get an error here. (this screen off part is what the manual SSPL is going to do anyway).
**
If you still get problems, ensure you are connected to the computers USB port - not via a USB hub, take the SD card & sim out the phone. Maybe try a different PC, different USB lead - always make sure you are following the instructions very carefully - and if you still have problems, let us know & we'll try harder! - remember to tell us everything, if you try 2 leads - tell us! If you get something different, tell us what! You can never give too much technical info when asking for technical help - and the more you have tried, the more interested others become (we all like figuring out a problem!)

Thank you so much for your help just to give you an update either way I do it
Manual SSPL or just run the Hard SPL by itself the screen goes black and I know
thats what it is supposed to do. Just to clarify at first I did not know the screen was supposed to go black so thanks for that. Again either way it disconnects and a screen comes up saying it found new hardware from that point at first I was scared to do anything else but but eventually I just clicked YES install the hardware hoping that after I did that it would not disconnect but even saying yes to the Found new harware it would say it could not install any hardware and I'm stuck
from there still getting the error
Again I cannot say enough how helpful people have been even if I have not been able to get hard spl on the phone yet
I bought an 8T directly from OnePlus so it's not locked to any carrier. I intend to install a custom ROM on first use. I'd like to know the following before I unbox it:
Are there any steps required before the OEM Unlocking toggle is not greyed-out and before the phone will respond to the unlock command via fastboot?
I'm pretty sure I read a post a while back where the user stated the unlock command wouldn't function until he put a SIM card in the phone, or connected the phone to the internet, or logged into his Google account, or some such thing.
Does anyone with experience unlocking a brand new phone have anything to add? I've been following the 8T forums since before Mauronofrio's TWRP to learn all the procedures, but I don't recall anyone else mentioning issues specific to never-used phones.
The unlock toggle was indeed greyed-out when I unboxed the phone. Connecting to the Internet and completing the Android Setup wizard did not alter the state of the unlock toggle.
Actually, to be clear, I set up the phone first without Internet, then a few days later connected to the internet, but doing so did not make the greyed-out OEM Unlocking toggle suddenly accessible.
So at this point I'm not sure what's the issue... Does the phone need to see a SIM before it will let me access OEM Unlocking? Or does is require a Google account login? Or something else?
I found a comment on a non-XDA forum about a different type of android phone where the user reported that he had solved the problem by connecting to the internet and going through a minimal Google setup.
I gave it a try, only in my case I connected by ethernet cable (USB-C to Ethernet adapter), so it doesn't have anything to do with installing a SIM or turning on WiFi.
Then while connected I did a factory reset to re-start the android setup wizard. This time it took a lot longer to initiate the setup program and there were a lot more steps and conditions to accept along the way. Plus, there were Google terms and conditions to accept that weren't there the first time, and files I had to agree to download. :-( I disconnected before much else and rebooted. This time the OEM Unlocking toggle was enabled.
