I have an i-Mate (XDA II) (Himalaya) running Windows Mobile 2003. I want to upgrade my operating system.
Should I wait for Windows Mobile 2005 (will it work on my PDA) or look for Windows Mobile 2003 SE?
Thanks
Calli
2003 Se, the SIN merged rom is recommended.
DONT use 2005 unless you want to have 9meg storage only, lose all the ram, and have most programs not work. Other than that its nice.
2003 SE 2.20 is great, but bugged because of translation. I used it for ages.
The 2.02 and 2.06 have issues each, so the merged SIN rom seems the best stable bet.
Ive tried them all.

Thanks Pyrofer for the advice.
Where can I get a copy of 2003 SE, that is easy to install?
Thanks

Calli, I have just installed the SIN merged rom and it works great on my imate. Give it a go.

I have an HP iPaq rx3715 (WM2003), which I used to sync with ActiveSync 3.8. Never any problems.
Nowadays I also have a MDA Vario (WM5), which can only be synced with ActiveSync 4.1, so I installed 4.1. Synching the Vario is no problem.
Now... The problem... I can no longer sync my iPaq.
The iPaq needs ActiveSync 3.8, the MDA Vario needs ActiveSync 4.1.
There is no way to have both versions installed on the same PC. I tried.
I even tried to install the different versions on seperate XP accounts. Didn't work either.
In theory I could install 3.8 on PC1, and install 4.1 on PC2.
The problem with that is that the PST-file is located on PC1, and not on PC2. For security-reasons it is not possible to run a copy of the PST on PC2. (Besides... It wouldn't not be a very handy workaround.)
Now... How can I sync the above two devices on the same PC, with the same PST-file?
Anyone???
AS 4.1 includes 3.8 in it.
When you sync 2003, all icons etc become old type - I do it everyday - sync my universal and sync my Benq p50
No issues.
Well.... My rx3715 won't sync on AS4... But AS4 is needed for the MDA Vario... :|
Anyone else any ideas?
Why do the iPAQ need AS 3.8? Alls WM2003 Devices are working with AS 4 too.
Hello Sjaakman!
Unfortunately, i don't know an alternative way to sync a PPC with a PC, but I can tell you that I've successfully synchronized a rx3715 with a PC running XP SP2 and AS 4.1 many times, infect I even managed to sync a Dell with WM 2002 with the same PC no problem.
I suggest you make sure you have the latest version of AS and that the installation is clean. It is possible that while trying to install the previous version you somehow damaged the current installation which is why it wont sync.
Good luck!
I tried and I tried and I tried.... And I could never get it to work...
I just now tried a clean install of AS... And what do you know... It works
Thanks.

Not sure how you got it to work.
I was never able to get my iPAQ h6315 to sync with AS 4.1. After struggling with it a while, I noticed that in fact, Microsoft states the following on the AS 4.1 download page:
- ActiveSync 4.1 is the latest sync software release for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices.
- For customers using Windows Mobile 2003 or 2002 powered devices, please continue using ActiveSync 3.8.

I just wanted to add that I believe this statement means you don't need to upgrade unless you have a WM5 device.
If any one is interested I can tell you from experience that I've successfully synchronized devices with OSs WM2002, WM2003 / SE (including iPaq 6315), WM5 and CE 4.2 (not PPC) with a clean install of AS 4.1 and no tweaking done. So far it appears to be completely backward compatible.
Just for the record: I am not trying to defend MS. But if you have a similar problem to the one mentioned in this thread, you should check the AS installation before breaking your head trying to find another solution. The problem could also be on the device side, and may be solved by hard reset (not pleasant but effective).
Can any one explain the difference between CE6 and crossbow? and emebeded
I saw a Evaluation kit (platform builder) is freely available
www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/eval/trial.mspx
Hi there....
ce6 is the fundament of crossbow (wm6) like ce5 in wm5 ....
embedded is winxp ... you can just make an winxp for devices they doesn't need much drivers.. like cashes ...
Also, CE5 (and CE6) are used for embedded OS for things like in-car navigation systems, where the end user never sees the OS, only the apps designed to run on it.
I am not sure if WM6 is built on CE6.. I think it still uses the 5th version kernel.
the windows mobile 6 being release as crossbow is actually built on WM 5.2 which is basically a shell for CE 5.
CE 6 will be released as Photon (prolly WM 7)
What's the oldest/slowest device anyone successfully ran WM6 on? Just wondering.
prolly the wizard...
I have had WM6 and WM6.1 running on a Himalaya

By far, the HP hx4700 (aka HTC Roadster) is the oldest machine running WM 6 ....
WM 2002 ---> WM 2003 ---> WM 2003 SE ---> WM 5 ---> WM 6.0

HTC Typhoon (also was 2003>2003SE>WM5>WM6)
The Motorola MPx200 probably also qualifies:
Smartphone 2002 > 2003 > WM5 > WM6
In fact, from WM5 onward there is insufficient ROM in the device itself so half of the OS has to go onto the memory card. Thankfully it takes full-size SD cards though...

As far as I know, the hx4700 cam with WM2003SE when it was released, not 2002 or 2003FE.

Per the topic of this thread, Anyone knows?

Probably. I use applications made for Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5, and both work fine. Windows CE is backwards compatible for the most part, so things that worked on CE 4.2 (WM 2003) and 3.0 (PocketPC 2002) probably work on 5.2 (all 6.x builds of WM). I don't know what CE version WM7 will run, probably CE 6.x.
Hi everyone!
I have installed Office Mobile 2007 amd previously installed/uninstalled Ofice Mobile 2010 on my vox with default winmo 6.1 os.
I face this strange error:
Can't find 'pword' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct andthat all the required libraries are available.
for word, excel, ppt.
I havr .net 3.5 installed. Pls help me.
Prior to the recent hard reset, Off. Mobile 2010 worked like a charm.
Pls help.
try with Office Mobile 6.1 for SMARTPHONE ~ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333383
