Microphone not working via connector (DIY carkit) - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Accessories

Hi there,
I am modifying my MDA2 carkit such that it plays sound over the radio speakers and uses a separate microphone, now its only a charger and connector to my tomtom.
I managed to get sound working via pins 3-4 and 5. I connected pin 19 to GND such that it uses external sound while in a call.
The only thing I cannot get working is the microphone. I use pin 1 for the microphone and pin 5 for GND. I've tried it with several carkit microphones but none produce any sound. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Mm. I'm building my own car kit from scratch, and have been experimenting with it.. What you lack is power to the microphone.

BTW, a word of advice. With this power you will get your microphone input, but it is effectively short range (as in you have to speak INTO it to get sound, put it 1 meter away and you ahve to shout).
If you want better gain/sensitivity, it's time to build a simple microphone preamp/amp.

The XDA2 connector pinout

every thing seems to be the same
though there are differences in the sound output
pin 19 must be connected to ground for sound through the connector
pin 19 cant be connected to +6v or else the whole xda2 is not responding anymore
pin 1 (mic) must be amplified
going to buy a small mic ampliefier on 12v tomorrow
Hmm, considering people still use their XDA I carkit, i suppose it should work...
However, the audio i tapped from the bottom connector is dead too...
Only hing i can think of is that HTC rewired it so the bottom connector only gives audio if you ground Pin 19 (Car_on).
If your 100% on pin 3 & 4 being #ground, they might have made audio mono, and switched pin 2 & 3, audio out on pin 2 and ground on pin 3. For audio that would still work...
Btw the headset-out is filled with a rubber piece, not handy for quickly attaching an audiopug i'm tinking of cutting it, but that's a bit drastic for a temporary workaround to use audio-out...

maybe if i put +6v to CAR_ON it helps
the phone goes to speaker mode
maybe micfroon will work then to

so mic in would be pin 1
i think there is only a slight difference
audio was normally always been put through the connector

the 19 pin function is different
+ will block every function of this phone, so thats the problem with my own carkit, i have connected it this way

problem is now that i want to use a mic
when i connect a mic to pin 1 and GND, there is not sound
i know that pin one really is the mic, cause when i tap the tip of the wire while recording audio or test calling i hear ticks..
what kind of microfoon must i connect to pin one

In speakermode you dont't have audio trough the connector...
the connector is the same
the 19 pin function is different

I have the opposite problem, i want audio-out for a external speaker, but no ext. mic. (din't get one to work).
what kind of microfoon must i connect to pin one
One that doesn't want a wire to any power.
I bet one of an old nokai headset might work...
or what connection will let the xda2 go into speaker mode auto

i am sure
i have tested loads of micrfoons
from nokia headset etc
external sound source is the awnser
i connected a mp3 player and it records fine
now i just need to make an external sound aplifiar for the microfoon
and set pin 19 to GND then its all done
got some old nokia carkit
maybe i can mod it
You mean you got te mic-in to accept audio, but only from an amplified source like a MP3-player ?
Here on xda-developers.com the said the mic-in should't be amplified...
But, hey, they can be wrong to...
when i connect a normal mic (tested 4 different ones) there is absolute sillence
when i connect my mp3 player and turn up the volume then there is sweet sound
Ok, talked to the techie-colleage today :
Headset mic is a condensator mic.
pulls approx. 1V (from audio signal)
What we need is a 'spool'-mic, they seem to be a bit more rare than te condensator ones... these pull approx. 0,6V His thoughs where to use a small speaker and test if it will work as a mic. Then try a real mic...
Or get a velleman kit with condens.mic and amplification
On XDA2 pin2 is NOT GND !
I agree with last post, pin2 in XDA2 is not conected to GND pins 5, 16, 17,18 (all them connected)
When I ground pin2, a little beep (wav) is heard, but nothing seems to happen.
Can anybody point what's the use for pin2 ??
I'm trying to build my own car kit with no success:
I can´t obtain audio out whith or without grounding pin19
I must correct my last update.
I obtain audio when in phone mode, but not during playing waves or TomTom instructions. Even Ring Tones do not go out trough the bottom connector.
So is it a software problem ?
Can function of pin2 br related to this ??

myxda web page states that most of the accesories from xda1 will NOT work on xda2
PIN 2 IS ground, or the XDA 1 carkit wouldn't give any sound in combination with an XDA 2 !
The XDA 2 seems to give sound ONLY for phone be it through carkit or BT headset.
If that's true, and if that's the hardware on the XDA 2 then i want my XDA 1 back !!!

Solving MDAII carkit and XDAII carkit behaviour differences

On http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/Connectors it is clearly explained that the MDAII connector has following audio-related pins:
1 CAR_MIC_IN
3 CAR_AUDIO_R
4 CAR_AUDIO_L
With the original T-Mobile MDAII carkit ALL audio (phone & pda) is said to go via these pins
With the XDA2 carkit only phone audio (after accepting a call) goes via these pins.
Maybe this has also something to do with the switching of the in-car signal on
19 CAR_ON
:idea: CAR_ON is connected to +6V on the car charger which makes the phone go to speaker mode immediately when picked up or dialing.

When this pin is connected to ground, the internal mike and speaker are turned off, and audio input is taken from the audio input pin on the connector.

Can't believe no-one with a XDA2 / Expansys carkit is looking forward to solving these issues too . . .
I checked this a couple months ago when I dismantled my expansys car kit. I'm sure I found pin 19 is already grounded on the carkit. With regard to this part of the pin 19 description:
"...CAR_ON is connected to +6V on the car charger which makes the phone go to speaker mode immediately when picked up or dialing. "
"Speaker mode" in this case means the handsfree mode, where the integral xda II speaker is turned up to "distortingly loud" and the internal mike is used in call, similar to what happens if you push and hold the green/send button during a call. If pin 19 is raised to +6V, this will be the xda II's default behaviour with the phone function. This is so you could plug in a simple car charger that puts pin 19 at +6V and that provides only power to the unit (no mike, speaker etc) and allows you to make/receive calls through the builtin speaker and mike without having to hold the xda to your ear.
I feel that if pin 19 is grounded, all audio should be sent through the bottom connector and then into the car kit. Indeed, this is the case with some ROMS / software versions, but not in others. I therefore think it is a software/ROM issue.
I found with my uk o2 xda II, with both the launch ROM and 1.60.50 ROM I got the same behaviour - the unit did not send pda audio to the bottom connector whether pin 19 was grounded, raised to 6V or left floating. Yet other HTC Himalaya owners have reported things differently with different ROMS.
Firstly I thought this to be a s/w issue as well.
But then: The T-Mobile MDAII carkit seems to be working as desired no matter the rom version . . .
Could we get together a list of device/rom/carkit combinations with the actual behaviour in sorting this out?
ANYONE: pLEASE POST YOUR CONFIG HERE.

I am having an identical problem
Build: 13252 - 1.60.00WWE EXT. 1.60.50
I have an XDA I've been messing about with in the car to try to make myself an in-car kit and that was all going fine (Although the phone is now stuck in in-car mode, think i've blown something up ). For the kit I made there, +6v on pin 19 output all audio to the connector.
I then bought an XDA II and in-car kit, wired it all in and then tried to play audio through an in-car cassette adapter lugged into the headphone socket that's built in to my in-car kit. The phone outputs to the speakers fine, but the audio, (Mp3 and the like) won't go to the conncetor at the bottom. (Note that the in-car kit's jack socket is driven off the 22 pin connector at the base of the XDA II)
I'm dissapointed that it could be a softwaer problem, although surely someone somewhere must know a way to force the software into in-car mode constantly and playing the audio out?
Any solutions then let me know cos I'm really irritated that I've just spent £150 on the in-car kit only to find that it don't work yet!
Roll on the XDA-Developers Special Ed. ROM for the XDA II, I bet that'll fix the problem!

not sure how easy it will be to change the dll files over, anyone with some experience in doing this fancy having a go first and letting me know how it gets on? Is it possible to do? What do I have to do once I mess up the ROM on the pda by overwriting a dll file? Can I just hard reset?

Motorcycle Intercom (Autocom)?

After playing with the idea for almost 5 years I think I am now ready to buy an Intercom for my old bike (1984 BMW R100RS).
My intention with the intercom is to be able to speak with the pillion rider of course, but mostly it is to have the ability to use the features of the Himalaya (Qtek 2020), including:
• GSM speech (from both rider and passenger)
• Audio (directions e.t.c.) from the Navigator software (GPS Bluetooth connected – so there are no issues regarding the GPS)
• Audio when using it as an MP3 player
I want to connect the intercom with the 22 pin flat connector, because I also want to charge the phone, and do not want to have the troubles of connecting two connectors (round and flat) at the same time.
I have had a look on the page: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/Connectors. Instead of going for the DIY Car-handsfree, is it possible to connect the pins from the Himalaya directly to the intercom unit? The intercom unit it prepared for attaching phones.
Audio Connections:
As I read the description (and if it is possible to connect directly into the intercom unit) I would connect it as follows (since the microphone and speakers will be connected to the intercom unit, the following is the “virtual” connections through the cable into the intercom unit and onwards to the mic./speakers in the helmets):
Microphone:
Pin 1 – Line in
Pin 5 – Mic. Ground
Right Speaker:
Pin 3 – Left Speaker
Pin 5 – Speaker Ground
Left Speaker:
Pin 4 – Left Speaker
Pin 5 – Speaker Ground
Question:
I am not sure about pin 19 (CAR_ON#), but as I read it, it must be connected to ground (not the audio ground), in order to have all audio input/output come from/to the intercom. Is that correct?
Charging connections:
I will be using a 5V (7805) regulator, and connect:
Pin 20, 21, 22 – + 5V
Pin 16, 17, 18 – Ground (and maybe pin 19 – se above)
Question:
The “Power hookup” digram shows pin 15 (UDC-) should be connected to the ground, along with pin 17 and 18 – but not pin 16.
Pin 19 is connected to +5/6V, but the pin 20 is not.
What is correct in my case – the “DIY Car-handsfree” or the “Power hookup” diagram?
Summary:
Have I overlooked something (forgotten connections/wrong connections)?
Will what I have described work as intended?
Has anyone had any experiences connecting the Himalaya to an MC intercom?

I've just bought an Autocom unit and have laid it out for a dry run. I've fitted the speakers into the helmets and mike boons. When I attached my XDA mini s, I attached it through the headphone jack with a 2.5mm. Trouble is, when I receive a call, Ican hear them but they cannot hear me as it is in the headphone slot. Is there anyway of connecting the phone so that I can be heard, ie, via the mini USB slot.

i think you will find you need a 4 ring 2.5mm plug for the mini s. im not sure which does what yet but will be looking into this soon. i think though it goes from the tip to the body of the plug
tip audio (poss left)
ring 1 audio (poss right)
ring 2 mic
ring 4 ground (common to both mic and audio)
so if you are using a normal 3 ring 2.5mm you will be shorting the mic to ground thus it cant be heard.
All you will need to do then is patch them to the correct connections on the bike system.
Im wanting to do this for myself but im going to build into the connection between the mini s and the bike system a push switch (add the patch to get the talk button to fire up the voice dial) and copy the wiring on the mini s supplied headphones.

[Q] htc phone into goldwing sound system

I hope one of you wizzards can help me with this prob.
I am trying to wire my htc hd mini into the sound system of my goldwing. I use the satnav on the phone whilst on the bike, I can get sound through the headset in my helmet but can't get the mic working for making calls. I have made a piggyback lead with 3x5 pin 180 deg sockets and a 5 pin din plug to go into the system with.
I have tryed to insert a wiring diagram of the goldwing system but couldn't seem to do it, so hears a link to one.
And also a link to how the din plugs are wired.
I have been piggybacking from the din with grey tape shown going straight to the headset. Perhaps I should go through the amp.
I look forward to your ideas.

I've spent many hours on google trying to find a way to alter my voice during calls, in real-time but did not found any cheap or easy ways to do it so I came up with this idea and I thought it would be nice to share it with you guys.
You'll need:
Old nokia earphones with mic
Soldering iron
Standard stereo audio jack connector-cable
If you want to use it on Android, follow this instructions to rewire it: http://www.instructables.com/id/Rewire-Old-Nokia-handsfree-WH-102-to-use-it-with-A
Open the earphones with a knife or something to reveal the circuit like shown in the link above. Now you can see that there is a small mic connected on the circuit using two pins.
The only thing you have to do is cut the stereo cable and connect the two cables inside it as shown in the pics below:

Go to the configuration page of your microphone and under Listen tab check "Listen to this device" and select the audio output of your computer(where the stereo jack is connected). Now you can use your computer microphone to speak during voice calls.
Just search for a software on your computer that alters your voice and you are good to go. This one looks good: http://www.screamingbee.com/

This is kinda cool. I'm going to look more into this later, but on first impression I just keep thinking "So I can call people and sound like the guy from Scream?!" Do you have any video/audio recordings of how it's working for you or what it sounds like? Curious to know the difference and all that. Thanks for the heads up!
