Skype driving me mad! - General Topics

I use skype on my XDA IIs and as I travel a lot I find it a cheap and easy way to chat to my kids.
The problem is that every time I turn on my phone or it gets any kind of message or connects to my wireless router to sync with my laptop I get the following message.
'cannot execute \storage card\skype technologies s.a. 1.0\skype.exe'
Thing is there's nowt wrong with the storage card, now I've uninstalled skype it still says that. I even bought SK Tools to try to rid myself of this but it remains and the damn thing means now I wake up to a flat battery every morning.
Can someone point me towards the file I have to edit to stop this and of course a suitable editor. I am guessing the initial problem was caused by me installing skype to the storage card.

Anyone?

hey! maybe you should look again into the "Notifiy Que" in SK Tools. Look attentively at every entry there and remove everything that has got to do with skype.
Alternatively you may reinstall skype, do softrest (take attention not to run the skype app after restart!) and uninstall skype again via SK Tools --> Uninstall App

Quappo

The PDA2k seems to be slow in initially picking up the Storage Card on a power on.
People who use MP3 ringtones from their Storage card have the same access problem.

The SD drivers are known to be slow at both reset and power on, there is a definate lag - this is documented by WebIS (the Pocket Informant people) and Spb Software House. It is recommended that anything the can be considered a system service or which interacts with the Today screen be installed to the Main Memory.

Gernal Questions about the XDA*

Hi,
My first post
I am thinking about jumping from a P800 to the XDA2 or the New XDA3. I dont know much about how you memory works in these phones.
If the battery goes flat, what information do you lose? Only the internal memory? I have no idea?
The magic question, should I wait for the XDA3 or just get the XD2? I do want wifi, but I dont want a SD wifi that hangs out at the TOP, is there a SD wifi that fits in nicely. I cant seem to find one.
If I do buy the XDA is there anything I need to knwo first that would drive me away?
Also, si there any difference in buying a MDA2,XDA2,I-mate???
Thanks for you time.

You loose unsaved data, i.e. elements you were editing at that specific time. Any saved data (contacts, calendar, ...) will remain. I think after loosing 100 % of its data, you may loose saved data and settings. For me that is not too much problems as it is all sync on my PC. When I leave for very long period. A soft reset will restart your XDA nicely. A hard reset will put it back as your ROM was originally when you loaded it.

These are all the same hardware. Only the ROM will change. But as you may load the software in the extended ROM , the differences are meaning less.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for the quick answers. So you save about the battery when it totaly dies you lose your settings?
So you saying its just like a PC, you pull the plug and you lose anything that you are working on, but if you were to save this, then you have no problems, right?
Ive never realy had a PDA.
thanks
Hi
I have just changed from a the loved p800 to the XDA 2 and I have to say there is no major difference at the start but you can do so much more. the battery is not a big problem. you get 72hrs so thats good but you get a backup battery so this will store you settings and work untill it runs out.
over all the XDA 2 is much better I find to the P800 with more functionality.
the 802.11b card has to stick out of the SD slot as currently this is the areal and if it is to be in the phone then it gets low signal.
if you save all your stuff to a SD and make sure you back-up with the pc you will have no problems.
Zaken,
So you save about the battery when it totaly dies you lose your settings?

Yes, but only the settings you may have entered manually, such as GPRS settings if not provided in the ROM, and generally any modification in the feel and look.
Now, as R1KDE is saying, it'll be 9 months that I have my XDA and it has never happened to me. Should it happen, to would take me about 7-10 minutes to re-enter modified settings (GPRS, owner info, Check POI settings...
If your relatively new to PDA, the key thing to remember is that your PDA will synchronise with you laptop to save a copy your data (not settings) for what ever is most updated such as contacts, telephone number, address, Excel spreadsheet, World documents, calendar, tasks, favourites ,.....
I have never lost a single data with my PDA

Actually, tanguy is wrong on this one. All your data and applications are stored in RAM. Now, when the battery level falls below a certain threshold, the OS will disable the Radio (Phone) part and also disallow turning on the PDA. In this state, the remaining battery power will hold data in RAM for another day or so. After that, i.e. when the battery is really empty, you will lose all data and applications - unless you enabled the special "save to Flash memory" feature for contacts, tasks, notes and appointments.
However, the normal way of working is that you synchronize your device with your PC every day (by just putting it into the charger cradle), so most of your data is automatically backed up to your PC. And there is also a backup facility built into ActiveSync (the sync program that comes with the device) that allows you to make complete back-ups, and of course restore these back-ups.
So, I would say your data should be pretty safe.
Oh, and of course there is a small "emergency" capacitor that will hold the RAM data while you change your battery or SIM (to access the SIM, you have to remove the battery), so this is not a problem either.
The magic question, should I wait for the XDA3 or just get the XD2? I do want wifi, but I dont want a SD wifi that hangs out at the TOP, is there a SD wifi that fits in nicely.

I don't think such a device exists, or can exist - simply because the manufacturer cannot predict how much RF shielding the housing or components around the SD slot will generate; so, if the Wifi SD card fitted "nicely", as you said, it would have to have an internal antenna, and reception would likely be rather poor.
If I do buy the XDA is there anything I need to knwo first that would drive me away?

Not really, I am quite happy with mine. You should be aware though that it still is a PDA with phone functionality, and not a smartphone. This means that some phone functionality may not be as smooth and seamless as you may be used to from a phone. However, imho, having a phone, camera, MP3 player, navigation system, stopwatch, ebook reader, torch light (well, at least bright enough to find the key hole of your front door ), calculator, alarm, contact manager, calendar always available easily makes up for this.

The hardware and operating system is identical. The set of applications vary, but nothing really important. Pick the cheapest one![/quote]

Hoops! There is a lack of clarification as I'm right and your right too!
You will loose all data, applications and application settings loaded in your RAM. For my case I have found all the applications I needed in LumpySpephan kitchen and have them loaded in my XDA ROM (expect for TomTom Navogator as it's too big).
Thanks tadzio for correcting this to avoid confusion and wrong understanding of PDA's
hhmm.. this ROM and RAM thing is confusing me a little, I understand the difference, READ ONLY MEMORY and RANDON ACCESS MEMORY, is that correct.
But I know nothing about writing to the ROMS. Do you need a special device to do this ro can the XDA itself do it!
I think I need to do some reseach
Thanks for you help you guys have been most helpful.

Well, admittedly the naming is confusing. Wherever you see a reference to ROM, mentally replace it with "Flash Memory".
Flash can be written to, but it's much, much slower than RAM, and can only take a limited number of write cycles (not enough to be used as RAM, but far more than enough for holding your data, so don't worry!), so it's not used as main memory, but only to store data that doesn't change too often.
The main difference, from a user's point of view, is that data stored in Flash will survive a totally flat (or removed) battery.
To store contacts, appointments, tasks and connection settings in Flash (so that they survive a flat battery), you don't need any special programs. On your MDA/XDA II, just go to Settings -> System -> Persistent Storage (I hope that's the correct English translation of the German "Dauerhaft speichern"), and check any of the boxes on that screen. Note that this is specific to the Himalaya PDA; others, like iPaqs etc, use different mechanisms.
Cheers
Daniel
On the English ROMs they call it "Permanent Save".

My DIY Tornado soft reset tool!

Okay, here is the story... Sometimes I just want to soft reset my Tornado to close those "unclosable" apps like MSN Messenger. So I wrote this little program to help me. Now I don't have to turn off the phone and turn it on again just in order to do a soft reset.
I'd like to share it. Haven't been tested on Tornados other than mine. Use it at your own risk.
Just extract the exe from zip, copy it to your Tornado, run from File Manager... you can also create a shortcut for it.
B.T.W, It DOES NOT work on Windows Mobile 2003 platform. So don't bother to try.
It's updated. No more stupid ARE YOU SURE question.
Few question asked (ok ? Yes ? are you sure ? )
But work ok for me
Maybe turned OFF Button and turned ON Button will be shorter don't you think ?
Thanks anyhow
edit : on the second RUN less question Asked. Only one actually "Would you like to Soft reset"
I guess other question was the Win Mobile 5 things when you first run a new APPZ 8)
Bonjour. It's updated.
I just made it for fun.
Planning to add scheduled reboot function. So it can reboot in midnight, and you get fresh memory for a new day.
Any other ideas are welcome!
If you are havign trouble making registry settings place documents and mail on the storage card because boot-up doesn't find the card fast enough, then maybe soft reset will help.
I will try. Thanks.
Well, I believe CeleTask free memory function is more than sufficient
You didn't understand me, but I think I was wrong anyway.
There are times when you try to place certain system folders on Storage. But when phone boots, it tries to write that data before it recognises the storage card, so it creates the folder in system memory again (I think in Application Data instead of original location).
My thought was that if you could make a registry change immediately effective without theneed for a bood sequence, you could have your data on the storage card.
However, recent reading tells me that for registry settings to take effect, the system needs to be powered down. So no good.

Homescreen

HI. I´d love to have the s730 HTC home screen on my Vox. Does anybody know where could I get it?
Thx
Ditto that! I also have a 710 and would like the 730 homescreen/theme
Same here
We have tried to use the extracted files posted here earlier but it seems there is bunch of stuff missing...
Any new extraction or guidance would be helpful as well
The file posted here can be extracted : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1732690&postcount=4
I've been able to use HTC homescreen on my vox but I can't get some things to work like the favorite people application and the weather part... In fact only the clock works
Unfortunately I don't have time to look further into it, but it shouldn't be too difficult for the geniuses out there
wont spb mobile shell give a similar home screen?
Isn't it only for pocket pcs ?
It´s done.
HTC Home Screen for HTC Vox :
Found in this Forum under HTC Tornado. Works fine on my VOX. Be sure to install to the device!!! when you install it to SD Card Phone crashes at boot.
Thank you very much Gregory for this great theme.
Truplaya
Edit: Seems the phone sometimes crashes when you insert the sd card. without sd card it boots fine... Maybe someone knows why and can fix this error...
Before downloading you have to notice that this cab can cause a crash and you have to hard reset the phone.
Gah. A hard reset is now needed all because of that cab above this post.
Total crash, stuck in reboot cycle.
A warning to others.
(installed to device, not storage card of course)
Update: Seems that the cab did something to the phone's MicroSD support. Or something. I can boot the phone without having the storage card inserted. Any idea what may have been changed? I'm guessing something in the registry, but not sure really.
Same problem to me schlinkey. But i can boot without sd card and insert it when booted. I added a notice above about the problem. Sorry that you had to hardreset your phone.
Did the Plugin worked for you when you boot without sd card?
I can take some screens of my phone (Vox) with HTC Plugin tommorow if wanted.
Took some pictures this morning.
It's alright, a hardreset now and then keeps the phone running smoothly
When I managed to boot the phone (without having the SD inserted) I uninstalled the plugin. The error remained however, so ended up with a hardreset anyway
All working again now!
Got it installed on my Vox now, currently uninstalling look alike themes and stuff that I no longer use to free up space on my phone now. Thanks for getting the New HTC Theme to work on the Vox. Just ned to get weather plugin working now. I've also got an annoying problem where my Vox with my T-Mobile Sim in says that I am Roming and the carrier plugin says thatI am connected to T-Mobile UK. I'm in the UK and using a T-Mobile UK Sim.

No problem with the Home screen, but I have had the reboot problem with the SD card for ages.
I did manage to get it to boot with the SD card in by doing various things.
When I first had the problem switching to flight mode before a reboot fixed the problem. The after installing some software it would only reboot with the SD card in if I first ran SK tools to clear duplicates in the notification list and selected a home screen which did not access the SD card (including the MRU list) such as "Windows Simple".
When I installed the Office 6.1 update the problem appeard to go away.
Then I installed Facade and so far have not managed to get it to boot with the SD card inserted.
I guess I could uninstall Facade - but I want to use it.
A Hard Reset is too drastic and I don't want to try that - easier to remove the SD card than to spend all day re-installing everything on my phone - no gurantee it will work anyway.
I suspect its a problem with the SD card driver as I have read that later ROM versions fixed the problem.

I thought about that - not tried it - I assume it would back up all the registry settings along with the files.
But if I do a restore, I assume it would be back as it was before the hard reset, including the cause of any problem.
Although I suppose it might allow for some experimentation, with the ability to put things back to how they were before any changes were made.
Can someone who has used it give some comments on how useful sprite would be in these circumstances.
Hi all! Has anyone experienced the "My People" application stopping working after a while? After I installed it, it worked shortly, but now when I try to open it, the list flashes quickly, then disappears. This is from both the Home screen, and through the Start Menu. This has happened both times I've installed it. Any ideas?
Thanks!

IE keeps locking my Kaiser up.....

I have re-cooked the latest official HTC ROM, however it is pretty tame and doesn't (I don't think?) contain anything that should lock the whole thing up. However I am suffering IE issues where the phone is just locked and inoperable, the only resolution is to soft reset - it is really annoying.
I am using IE over my broadband WiFi and other stuff seems to works OK (Windows Live sync, 1-Calc currency download, Office Communicator 2007). If I launch IE and the click one of the favourites it starts but inevitably 'locks' when the 'Opening' begins.... Sometimes the page starts to load, but then locks, other times it just locks as soon as 'Opening' appears.
Andy
I think it's my customisations....
I have IE set to use the Storage Card for everything and I think it's this that is causing the issue...
This is what I have set:
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"Cache"="\\Storage Card\\Temporary Internet Files"
"History"="\\Storage Card\\History"
"Cookies"="\\Storage Card\\Cookies"
The folders are there and there is stuff in all of them.
I have just deleted the settings from the registry and reset and it now appears to work OK
Is this a known issue with the Kaiser and IE/Storage Card?

That is definitely your issue, it's a known cause of IE lockups to put the cache on your storage card.
In the future, these kind of questions should be posted in the Kaiser Software, or General forum, and not the Rom Development forum. Also, it would probably have been a better idea to just post this question in the thread for whatever rom you were using or a thread about this issue if you could find it, rather than creating a new thread.
Glad your phone is working now.
I can also confirm that storing, cache, hsitory, etc. on the storage card is the issue. I also use Tiny Twitter, and it would NOT update anything, with all the "store this IE stuff on my storage card" settings. Once I changed that back to main memory, all was right with the world.
Thanks for the replies & confirmation

WM6 (Boom) on G4 Crashing

Hi All,
I installed WM6 (with Boom logo) sorry was a long time ago, and cant remember the Official ROM title.
Been working great for ages, but over the past few days its been crashing (freezing, followed a few seconds later by screen fading out with various coloured vertical lines) and the only way to reboot is remove battery and start again.
There does not seem to be any pattern to when it crashes - sometimes minutes, but ran all weekend without a hiccup.
I have tried Axios CloseApps 1.40 to get rid of everything running that i dont need and this hasnt helped (crashed immediately the confirm screen came up once). Also run Reg Cleaner to see if that helps, cured a couple of issues but still crashing. Did have overclock at 240, but turned this back to 192 and still falls over.
No new programs installed recently... hadn't been sync'd in 80 days. Tried syncing aswell....nada
Anyone with any ideas??
Many thanks for any pointers
Nod
Just remembered - TNT Rom
Sorry - brain fade tonight!

Sounds suspiciously like a memory issue. It's possible you've somehow gotten your Extended ROM corrupted, but that's not very likely. The more likely issue is you're simply out of memory from loading too much on your phone, or (and still more likely) you don't clean out your phone periodically as you should.
D/L this and run it on your machine: ClearTemp. This will clear out temporary files, and remove dead links, etc. from your phone that are taking up space and helping nobody.
Hopefully you have DotFred's Task manager. Run it, go to notification manager, and delete all duplicate notifications. (See his feature list for explanation.)
Another suggestion: Use Advanced Configuration Tool to change the default locations of pictures, video, and documents to your SD card. If you're not using an SD card...get one.
If you already do these things, I apologize for preaching to the converted, but these seem like the most likely fixes.
Another slightly more painful solution would be to back up your PIM data and your personal files, and do a Hard Reset. This would strip away all your customizations, and remove all programs you've added, but it would also put your registry back in pristine condition, and scrub your memory of any buggy material.
Hi Myrddin,
Thanks for the advise...
I have used Clear Temp and looked at the TaskMgr, but did not know exactly what I could clear out or not... clearing duplicates and Scripts reduced the notifications down to 83 from 367!
Runs quicker if nothing else
I haven't a great deal of files on it, running a 2GB card which has TomTom on (program runs from card) with Euro and UK maps, and plenty of room for pictures etc which I save on the card anyway. Oxios states that i have 15ish MB free, so didn't think capacity was an issue. Have moved what little I had left over to the card.
Will try a Hard Reset as last resort, but noticed two things today - had a small piece of plastic under the SIM card (which is now removed) - may have been disturbing contacts with SIM.
This got me thinking... it seems more often that not when I put the Wizard into my Car Cradle (handsfree speaker/charger) it crashes. Could this be a battery/power connector issue? (no problems when I connect to PC via USB).
Many thanks
Noddy
PS Dont worry about preaching to the converted - even the converted need help occasionally!!

That sounds bad. Yes, I think it is possible you have a connector issue. I doubt you have a battery/power issue, otherwise. Do you have problems syncing the phone to a computer? If so, that would be the clincher for a connector problem. Otherwise, it may just be a less than stellar cradle connector.
Your SIM card debris issue doesn't sound related to this, but may have been related to your other problems (though I think this is unlikely).
Think it might be slowly dying :-(
Hi Myrddin
I think I have come to the same conclusion unfortunately.
Performed Hard Reset in the end which I thought may have fixed the problems, as no crashes for a few days, but then it happend again. DOH.
There are no problems when I connect via USB, and the Cradle is an official TomTom version and seems in pretty good shape. My wife's Wizard does not have this problem so I'm assuming it's my Phone and not the cradle unfortunately.
I think I am left with three courses of action
- flash an upgraded OS (6.5) to see if that improves stability (however the TNT build's I understand are pretty rock solid anyway)
- or take it apart and see if "anything wobbles" probably screen connector seems most appropriate as when placing in the car unit the only real way of pushing it in is by the front half of the top otherwise the SD card pops out or I hit the power button (my fingers aren't the smallest!)
- or purchase a new phone (I know I will probably get flamed for this, but the Glofiish X800 looks OK for circa £200)
Ho Hum. Thanks for all your help
Nod.
