Camera BMP bug and fix - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

I was testing the quality of the camera after the QTek 106 ROM upgrade and noticed using the BMP format at XL size gave edges in images really bad jaggies.
Scaling by 50% gave a good image and looking closely at the image I suspected an interlacing fault. Turns out the odd and even scanlines have been swapped. A stupid mistake and one that HTC can very easily fix.
In the meantime I've made and attached a Photoshop action that will fix these jaggy images. JPG images don't have this problem, only BMP ones.

BTW: The upgrade makes the video recording of the camera work absolutely great, no more split images.

Hm... :? do not understand how to upgrade with downloaded file from this post? :?:

The attached file is not an update for your phone, it's an action for photoshop. You copy it to your Photoshop directory in "\presets\photoshop actions\".
Then in Photoshop select the menu item Window->actions (or alt-F9) and in the actions list you should see the "fix MDA Compact BMP" item.
After loading a BMP image from the camera you can select that action item, then press the 'play' button at the bottom of the actions window to activate the action.
This will fix the BMP image for you, after which you can save it.
There's no fix for this bug on the phone itself, that's why I made this Photoshop action to fix BMP images until such a firmware update is released.

thnx for the fix!
but why would you want to save as bmp anyways? does it yield better quality or retain more details? i think most ppl just save as jpg; they're probably pictures not worth quality anyways if they decided to take it on this phone

Thank you very much for your comments It really works!
Hey, do you now why .BMP photo doubles .JPG weight? Which one to prefer for best pic quality?

BMP is an uncompressed format, JPG has lossy compression, which means you lose image quality. Some noise and unsharpness is added.
Try taking the same picture in JPG and BMP format and compare them, the BMP image has noticable better quality.
Also, if you plan on editing an image, BMP is better. Otherwise you use JPG, edit and save in JPG again and get twice the quality loss.
With the bad quality of the camera any improvement in sharpness and noise is welcome

Yeah!
I`ve made some pics with my cam in JPG and BMP and now I can see difference between this two formats
Speaking the truth, I never had an intention to use BMP before...
You right - BMP is much more better.

Good to hear that you like the results.
When I have enough space on my memory card and want the best image quality I always use the BMP format. Drawback is that it's a bit slower to process on the phone.

hi I tried your photoshop fix but I got the ff errors.

Could not fill because no pattern has been defined.
I think mine got stuck in the middle of your set of actions...
I am left with four hidden layers (in this order)
pattern (filled black)
odd
even
background (with lock)
I am using Windows XP SP2 and Adobe Photoshop 7

That is strange. I'm using Photoshop 8 and Windows XP SP2.
Sounds like the creation of the pattern went wrong, if it turned out all black.
I'll have a look at the script to see where the problem could be.

Is there any app that doesn't absolutely destroy the image like this when zooming in? (Why the hell did Google do this crap...)
Any other solutions on the Windows side would be welcome too. (I tried printing to pdf, and printing to 17x22 scaled up, but still looks like garbage when zoomed in on the phone, yet perfect on my PC. Any other ideas?)
Following this subject with interest. noticed my pics from my nikon g11 looked like crap in gallery as well, while beautyful on my computer.
I thought it was just my pictures.
I couldn't understand it as they were taken with £700 Digital SLR.
Thinking about it now they are pixel perfect on my PC also.
Hmmm, disturbing this one.

Thanks, this works a little bit better. Unfortunately, I think this is just an Android limitation.
I did find however, that if I zoomed in on my PC, took a print screen, saved as another png, and then used pinch and zoom on the new image on my phone, it did not distort at all, finally. Quite a hassle, but I guess Android just doesn't like zooming.
It's asinine to load up a 2,000px X 2,000px image in it's entirety to dsiplay on an 800x600 screen.
The gallery probably downscales it to 800x600 size and zooms in on that temporary scaled picture.

Exactly. There should be no "temporarily scaled picture". The picture is *physically and actually* changed, which should not be happening.
Especially on this so called "Superphone", there should be no reason that it mutilates pictures so that pixels are completely destroyed when zooming in.
quick question that doesn't need its own thread.
I am trying to install the Nemo Player .apk
When I download the file it downloaded as nemoplayer.apk.zip So I tried in my terminal while in fastboot ./adb-mac install nemoplayer.apk.zip and it said it could find the file. I had the file in the SD card, and in my SDK folder. And I also tried astro, but that didn't work either.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Unzip it
So I've noticed that with Multitouch Gallery, the picture is the clearest of all when zooming in, but still distorts if it's TOO wide or very square.
It will always attempt to fit the width of picture in the width of the phone. So best bet is to have a picture that's very tall and very slim. A square picture or an extremely wide picture is the worst, and will look absolutely terrible when zooming in.
The fact that Google coded it so that it absolutely must fit width-wize, and then distort when zooming in, is absolutely stupid.
Bump, for that banding thread

IDEA : 4x4 level and tilt meter

If anyone out there wants an app idea.
Using the g sensor on the HD2 display two views of a 4wd.
One view (Top) is a rear view showing tilt left to right.
The second (Bottom) shows a side view showing its tilt front to back.
Requirements maybe skinnable and also a reset/zero button to compensate for mounting.
Basically as your driving the images rotate to show what angle and slope you are driving on.
That would be a cool app...

Well, actually this would be not a problem.
Development modifications are minor to make it portrait, but there is lot of work with graphics. Therefore I have to wait a long time for the graphics from my designer.

Well,it seems to have some memory problem. I see this kind of problem during development first version. The rotation pictures are stored separately in 162 position images in one bitmap. This bitmap is quiet large with dimensions 1250x2125. 125x125 pixels per one image,10x16+1x2 in matrix. 125sq is also reason, that the image is not VGA sharp. If I tried to have 250x250pix images, the bitmap was so huge, that cannot load into the memory and I had same problem. What's your free memory? Tried softreset before starting?
I also have the same issue.
No pretty Lada.

So I have replaced resources,so this is much smaller rotation image to fit into memory.

Froyo Camera jgp compression patch/disable

replace /system/etc/mot_ise_imager_cfg.bin with attached file
It is possible to improve the JPG compression of the camera, almost removing the compression. I have already written on the xda-devs, can someone come in handy here.
Take the file / system / etc / mot_ise_imager_cfg.bin, changes everything 41 01 44 07 41 01 XX to 44 07 01 and replace the phone. In sharp ones Jpg files will be 3 times more, about 1,5 Mega and visually clearer, because More information is preserved.

- Well, what do you think how many % did quality improve?
- And how many % did the data-rate/filesize increase?
The relation of these two factors is the only relevant thing here I think.

This patch doesn't anything....
It's only a simple change of exposition, only works with flash and something with normal photos witouth flash!!
Go awai lier...
Ehi guys the user Stalker1971 from telefonino.net uploaded 2 picture: one made with the standard camera app, the second one with the app "Pro zoom camera 5x".
I think the quality improvement is huge.
Take a look at the photo:
1 standard) less than 400 kb

2 Pro zoom camera 5x) 3,1 MB
http://img203.imageshack.us/i/mar320118593.jpg/
What do you think?
Kinda hard to compare if its not the same image, really...
Indeed. And ofcourse, a bigger filesize says little about actual quality.

Hi,
Here are sample of stock camera, vignette and Camera360:
Stock_camera...............................Vignette....................................Camera360
468KB..........................................1.62MB.....................................1.29MB
quality75......................................quality100..................................quality100
Tomorrow I'm gonna try to shot on the day light.
I prefer Camera360 photos but stock camera is working very well too. Vignette has some trouble with flash led.
edit:
Here are photos in day light.
1. Camera360
2. Stock Camera
3. Vignette
Vignette looks the best at the day light.
I have some trouble with this patch.
My stock program works well for 2-3 shoots sequently, but then it stuck with half screen with photo and half with grey color...
I noticed with my first vertical photo (turning phone clockwise) but after that it's happened almost every time...
Now I try go back with stock one.
Maybe something in file writing stucked the phone.. Someone have noticed something similar?
Edit: Maybe I've found the bug.. if I take photos in my room, the photo is around 800KB, but with external snapshot (more details, more colors = bigger file) I can reach over 1.4MB... I think the camera is stucking with files over that dimension. Maybe a bit higher compression will help.. I'll try.

Wow, thanks! I appreciate it.
P.S. I found a bug (forced close) in PRO so I am fixing it now. It will be done by tomorrow night.
If you have any question just let me know.
Thanks, I will do.
I haven't had any FC yet. The only thing I found was the first time I ran it, it couldn't verify the licence. I disconnected wifi and ran it again using mobile data and all was fine after that.
Thanks again.
That is good. FC will occur when images are in bad conditions such as bad focusing. It will not happen anyway.
I am using Google license service, sometime license checking is failed when imo network connection is bad.
Thanks again.
Thanks for your comment!
Good luck with your great app!

Hello, PRO is updated to the v1.33
1. Dubois method (which reduces ghost effect)
2. Fixed FC issue
Thanks!
Thanks for the update.
Just a bit of feedback, It works just fine, the only thing I have found is that if I select a large image (over 2mb), it is resized by the app which is fine. But if I select 'Auto Align' the process starts but then the app closes (sometimes with an FC, sometimes without). If I select a smaller image file, this problem doesn't occur and the process completes successfully.
Thanks, user feedback is always important.
So, I have questions because it is very hard to make same situation with different phone.
1. do you mean the problem occurs when you take pictures larger than 2MP from other camera app?
2. If pictures are larger than 2MP, Does app closing (FC or without FC) always occurs? or sometimes success?
First of all, I restricted picture size to 2MPixel (1600x1200) which is actually 6Mbyte in memory. So, for stereoscopy, at least two pictures should be loaded in the memory at same time. Furthermore, result 3D picture also needs to be loaded at the same time. Then required memory is 18MByte which is almost not allowed by Android OS.
So, I resize selected picture if it is larger than 2MP using BitmapFactory.decodeFile with inSampleSize. Then bitmap is transferred to C++ for faster processing (image matching, resampling, etc). My best guess at this time is that pictures resized by the Android function (decodeFile+inSampleSize) may not give enough number of matching points because of resampling method.
I will let you know when I solve this problem.
Thanks!
The picture concerned was taken from the gallery. I selected the same picture for both right and left. Having selected Auto Align, the close happened. When I select a smaller file (picture), it all runs smoothly.
The problem always occurs with larger file sizes for me. I haven't tested in detail but I think 2mb appears to be the limit.
If you want to try it yourself, here is the picture concerned... I purposely chose it as it was a largish file size (3.1mb).

I will fix it tonight and let you know when I am done.

[App][2.3+] - CameraParameters, modify camera beyond api

Greetings all, this is my first app, and first post on this forum (though I've been reading it for some time before i registered). I've written a simple camera app that lets you view and explore all the parameters for your camera. This app was meant to read, modify and display the results of various camera parameters, as returned by the flatten() method. It is not designed to enhance your images, but to let you learn more about the cameras attached to your device and their features.
All parameters that are modified are set using set(String key, String value). This seems to work even for parameters that take an int value, such as jpeg quality.
I would like some feedback, especially on the UI. The values to change are entirely text based, which takes up a fair amount of screen real estate. I'm open to suggestions or other ideas.
Notes:
Only landscape mode is supported
Pictures are saved to DCIM\Camera
Gallery is not refreshed immediately
Supported Camera parameters are dumped to a text file in DCIM\Camera when the app launches
Parameters that are named "<whatever>-values" are not added to the dropdown, as they are presumably just a list of what values are possible for a given parameter.
Hardware tested on:
Samsung Galaxy Ring
Kyocera Rise
Acer Iconia A100
Any feedback is appreciated.

Maybe it's a bug from my ROM/device because third camera apps doesn't show the image in screen. I don't have other device to test it, sorry.
I think the UI of your app can be upgraded, maybe you can rearrange all box and buttons to one side of screen.

Sorry, i don't understand what you mean by "third camera apps", can you explain it a bit more? You have a third camera on your device that appears in the cameras dropdown, but doesn't display a preview?
Click to collapse
I attached two screenshots of your app, you can see the param is always "none".
You can also see the black screen.
Yes, the preview is not displayed but I can take pictures normally.

I have an issue with this. My photos aren't saving to anywhere I can find them.My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Rush.
/storage/sdcard0/DCIM is the pathway my photos normally save to. Is there a way to fix this?
Thank you all for the feedback, I'm back from the holidays, and have resumed work on this project. There are some minor updates:
-"C!" (Capture) button removed and minor UI adjustments
-Selecting a parameter should now populate the edit text with the current value for that parameter
-Long press on the preview image to capture an image, or..
-Press the hardware camera button if your device has one*
-All images captured are now stored in <your device>/CameraParams. This folder will be created if it does not exist
-Camera parameters are dumped into the above directory, one "raw" unformatted file, and another one with human-readable formatting
*Press it rather quickly, holding the hardware camera button may launch a camera intent, where your system will load your default camera app, which makes things go ...bad.
Todo:
-Proper enumeration and selection of available camera devices
-User-definable storage paths, so you can save to phone, sd card, usb device, whatever is attached..
-Continued UI refinement
-Refresh Gallery/Media db after saving images
-??? What else is needed or wanted from a camera utility?
