Server Management - General Topics

I've been looking for a good tool to manage my servers with that doesn't require me to have to vpn in. I found one tool http://www.iadminmobile.com but the cost is a bit high for us to swallow. Does anyone else know of any tools similar to this that I could possibly compare to?

Well in this case, you can opt for the managed servers in the first place as their are many companies available in the industry such as Cloudways who can provide you the fully managed servers . To know more about server management you can visit cloudways.com/blog/what-is-server-management.

Think if he hasn't managed to manage his servers by now, I say he needs to give it up...since you addressed his post that was from 02-24-2005...

GPS Tracking on Windows Mobile

Hi all, does anyone know if there is any software available to enable some sort of GPS tracking functionality using your windows phone. As im sure a lot of you know you can buy the little boxes that take a sim card and have a gps reciever built in and you can track them on tinternet. Is there any software which will do this using a windows mobile device witha built in GPS surely this would be a really really good feature.
Obviously to have a web based tracking feature someone would have to offer the server side, even if the app just uploaded location details in some sort of useable format like lat/lon or something to ftp every x mins or hours or something would.
Would be willing to pay if someone can make this.
Thanks all.
Rob.

Sometimes i feel like my posts must be invisible or something, i never seem to get any replies. Maybe its my aftershave.
lot of things are there...search this forum.
I don't think so. I believe currently you can only track mobile phones via their registration with a base station, with varying degrees of accuracy.
GPS tracking still seems limited to specialist devices.

Indeed - I found that thred as well....
The link I left above refers to as software are where you will find a couple of GPS Tracking projects for CarPC's - one is planned to have a PPC client but if your that way inclined you could write your own and use that service.

file repository

So I was thinking...almost every contribution we are privileged to have are hosted in a myriad of locations (rapidshare, megaupload, mediafire, etc...) which have links that may or may not work due to loads, due to proxy issues, due to solar flares?
This lead me to a possible project idea. I have a hosting solution which may come in handy if you guys think this is a worthwhile idea...
basically this is what I can offer...
// copy/pasted from my monthly invoice
Bandwidth:
Total Bandwidth Provided: unlimited GB
Total Used So Far: 7.527 GB
Estimated Usage For Cycle: 42.151 GB
Storage:
Total Disk Space Provided: unlimited
Month Average: 33.4 GB
Currently Using: 36.1 GB
Estimated Average Usage: 35.5 GB (at end of billing period)
So as you can see, space and pipe are not of any concern to me.
Would creating a file hosting solution for all projects (themes, apps, random source needs, roms, whatever) be of any use? If so, how would you guys like to see this setup? If not, that's cool too!
I am completely open to suggestions
not sure if you ever herd of cydia, or installous for the iphone. It was a app that housed link to various apps and themes.
maybe something like that? gotta start with the server to host, then build interface.
-Brandon
of course I've heard of Cydia. I think that may be overkill but not something I am willing to rule out.
Basically I want to get a feel for if this is a solution that those giving back to the community would actually use. I know I know..if you build it...
So basically something like AndroidSpin already has? More direct link hosts would be great. Especially when new roms come out and the server is overloaded with downloads and your speed is crap.

Agreed. Offers such as these are very generous and often go unappreciated. AndroidSpin has this set up well with most devs onboard. Maybe PM SimonWalker and offer a mirror service, because as Know-Fear said, a hot release drops and the race to be first can cause bottlenecks. Or do your own thing. Whatever happens, just wanted to say thanks for thinking of us.

I completely forgot about androidspin. Setting up a mirroring service may be the best solution. If he has people on-board already it makes no sense to fork such efforts.
Shooting a pm off.
A mirror solution would be a good choice.
Most of the time we have very few issues, but lately we experienced issues with HostGator.
We are in the process if switching to a dedicated host.
We currently transfer at least 6,000gb a month, and host aroung 40gb of files.
A mirror that could help take some of this load would be great.
We'd need to come up with a solution to Sync the files between any mirrors as well.
This is already listed in the Open Community projects on AndroidSPIN as something to look at in relation to the Community Release Database Project that is currently underway.
You can find more here.

ROM hosting

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right forum for this idea, but I have a webhost account that I already pay for and get 150gb of space and 1.5tb of bandwidth each month. I host 3 tiny websites on it and have a crapton of space and bandwidth left. In an attempt to give back to the devs on here for all their hard work, I'd like to offer to host ANY ROM for ANY DEVICE on my webserver , free of charge , with no strings attached. My way of saying thanks for doing kickass work all the time. If anyone is interested, send me a PM on here or email me @ [email protected]

Make sure that what you host lacks proprietary binaries, otherwise you could be subject to C&D's.

Thanks for the heads up kind sir.
If that hosting is your generic $10/mo for all you can eat plans, forget it. After the first few roms start consuming some serious bandwidth, your host will find a way to get rid of you. Simply because, most servers have a global 2TB/monthly allotment - so offering 1.5TB to a single account is just plain overselling and are screwed if you use it. I'm pretty sure this is the case because you stated that the websites are small, so chances are you haven't hired your own dedicated servers for them.
Not having a dig or anything, really kind thing to do, just don't want you going through the hassle then getting yourself suspended in the process.

Its godaddy if that makes a diff.... I'm still up for trying
I was thinking of something similar. Give me a little more time to finish up my site. I host my own site from my living room. So I dont pay host fees. Might be able to help out.
Well, I have web hosting service in Thailand.
But it is for Local P2P not for web, so they not offer me an International Bandwidth.
Things I need just 600 baht/month for additional IP Address and International Bandwidth (not sure for the price).
I have 180GB Partition for storage something but I can offer it for storage.
PS. International Bandwidth maybe very bad because I didn't co locating at CAT IDC. The next things is I can offer an unlimit data transfer.
PS2. 34baht=1USD

[Q] modifying .apk

I am not a developer, while I seem to have more knowledge than the daily user, I do not have the knowledge base to attempt the project that I am curious about. I work for a local tow company as AAA tow truck driver. AAA has provided all its contract stations with an android device that runs an app that is basically a native interface for a web based portal for dispatching the calls. To make a long story short if I were to log into the web interface from my E4GT I can view the dispatched calls ok and the office seems to be able to track me ok, but the native app on the AAA device seems to be able to update statuses while the web interface doesn't seem to actually send the information. I got a hold of the native app apk file and it installed ok, however it asks for a user name that the web interface does not ask for. I assume that this is to prevent people (like me ) from installing on devices that weren't approved by AAA. I was wondering if perhaps there was a way to modify the program to skip this step and allow me to move right in to the log in. If anyone can point me in the direction of someone who may be able to undertake this project for me, I know several people who would rather use their own devices than the AAA device which we are held financially responsible for if it ever is broken or lost. If I were able to run it on my device I could toss their device in a drawer where it will stay safe until I need to return it. Please help. I included the .apk file if anyone is interested in giving this a go.
The likelihood is that modifying this original app in any way works break the law.
AAA obviously paid for the app to be developed and they will own the rights to it.
I suspect that your request breaks the rules of XDA.
The app was downloaded fire free with no copyright permissions agreed to at this location. (I tried to post a link but I guess in too new, I have it tho if you need evidence] therefore I would assume no laws were broken. That web page is the web based program and allows you to download the app without agreeing to anything.

You can post a link by sticking it in as clear text, with no 'http://' if you really need to.
Just because you are able to download it for free doesn't mean there are no inherent copyright and licences - you will often find them as part of the installation procedure.
OK here's the link. d3me.ersace.com/d3me/htmls/index.jsp
The AAA servers have been having issues over the last couple days so the website seems to be down right now. It actually has been making with really tough because all or calls are being dispatched late and customers aren't happy. But there were no permissions on the installation either. It installed fast and asked for a user ID that I'm assuming belongs to someone in their tech dept. That's all.
After that it should go straight to the contract station and driver log in.

The website is up again. Feel free to check it out. I've been trying to get a hold of someone from AAA to talk about getting me a log on, but I have no response. I can't see how they could object to me using software that they want me to use. I just don't want to risk the device that they are holding me responsible for. Aside from the fact that I don't want to carry multiple devices around. I don't want to break any laws, but there doesn't seen to be any restrictions on this particular app.

That would be implicit to the software as well, so I would assume that the 'accompanying materials' probably includes their restrictions of use.
Regardless, I can't see you getting anywhere without the username and password. I reckon that social engineering is likely to be more successful than hacking the app, but I may be proved wrong.
I'm finally getting some response from AAA, it was a handbook given during the training for the software. I have read through it and an struggling to find anything regarding the licensing or copyright infringement. I don't deny the ethical gray area that I am standing in, I am just trying to make my working life easier. If I can accomplish the task through the proper means by acquiring a log in of my own I will do that, I was just wondering if the same results could be achieved through alternative means.

Noboy was willing to help either here or at AAA, however; if you are a reliable driver that doesn't need to be tracked everywhere that you go, justmake sure that your dispatch tells you when they send you a call and the web link will work. It will even track you if you leave it runnng. But there is no alert sound. So if dispatch just sends calls and doesn't tell you, its no good. Luckily I have been able to just deal with it for now. I'm extra careful with their device, and hopefully nothing will happen. But the tablets...... that sems pricey.

To say "Noboy was willing to help either here or..." is rather unfair. Nobody here would have any benefit from modifying the application to do what you wished, even if they did want to get involved in the legal gray area, and you can't exactly expect a developer to simply spend hours or days taking an app apart in the hope of modifying it when there is no real reason for them to do so.
Your best bet always was, and still is, to go back to AAA and ask them. If enough of the drivers start doing so they may consider allowing installation on a different device - although they may demand the device by sent to them first for the installation so they can pre-enter the required log-on information.
not an insult.

My post was not meant as an insult, just a statement of fact. I always aknowledged the legal gray area, and more than understand why nobody would get involved. I guess I was hoping somebody might point me in the right direc, tion to accomplish the task on my own. I have since given up the task as I have stated already, and continue to utilize the various recources this site provides. I'm sorry you were offended, but once agan, it was not an insult. Have a nice day.
simple
Guys i know this is kinda a dead post but AAA locks the tablet to go to the one website only.. that is when you click on the "app" on the tablet, it is just opening the web page. its your shop number, password, truck id and user id.. no install needed.
If you install this on your own device (only some clubs allow "bring your own device") you need to enter the location url for your particular club usually http://spp.aaa.com/d3me*** where the *'s are your club number. Then you have to have an application username which is simply a password that gives you access rights to install the application. You will never see this on a club owned device like a cell phone or tablet provided by the club you are contracted for because it is preinstalled. So as "simple" as stated that is all you need on a club device but if you are trying to install on your device (which likely runs much faster and better anyway) then you need a club that allows BYOD to get the application installer password. (And no I wont post the installer password!)

iMessage For Android via Mac

Hi All,
Perhaps some devs could provide some insight into a project like this.
As we all know there isn't any very good solution for those seeking iMessage on their android devices. The best we have so far is an app that has an iMessage server middleman somewhere in China where all of our messages pass through with who knows who is reading.
I have an idea, as someone who uses an android and a Mac, I still have access to iMessage through my macbook.
Would it be theoretically possible to create an app that tunnels to your Mac's built in iMessage program and displays it on your android with an interface very similar to the iPhone? Obviously this solution will only work for those of us with Macs, but I'd much prefer something like this as opposed to what's available on google play (if it's still even there).
I can somewhat create this using a VPN server off my mac connecting it to my android but my mac needs constant internet connection (can solve this with personal hotspot beam off android device as long as you've got your Mac with you when you aren't near wifi), but overall this is tedious to navigate. There has to be a way to create this into a more simplified user friendly app.
I would be interested in working with/help with testing if any of you would like to undertake a project like this. Though I have limited code experience.
You will e hard pressed to find anyone to help with this project. Most that are skilled enough to do this don't use Mac and the last person that did got shut down by Apple.

So I guess that answers my question that it's possible. Funny how that guy that got his arm cooked by the apple watch still hasn't heard from apple, but I bet that guy got his C&D letter within hours of them finding out. Greed.
But If I can half-ass do this with VPN why would they consider it contraband to create an app? You could probably get away with saying it's just a niche VPN app.

Its not that it was a contraband app its that they are very strict on what can access the imessages. Can it be done? Oh Im sure it can. Will it be worth the trouble is the real question.
