Quick thinking in power failure - General Topics

Just a quick tip for a half decent light if you ever have a local power failure!
I had a power cut at about 3am just while I was online surfing :?
I found a flashlight with dead bateries :x
So I turned on my XDA2 pressed the camera button and set the camera settings to: Effects and selected negative.
As it was completely dark the screen was bright white and it gave me enough light to find some candles
Just wish my PC ran on Candles

Seem to recall coming across an application once called "Lampe" that was dual function - one button turned your PPC into a Torch and the other button turned it into a mirror!

turning off the XDA EXEC

Hello
How does ont turn off the XDA EXEC, i dont see any off button. the power button just turns the screen backlight on and off.
the reason why i wanted to know what it was is because i am porting my number across networks, and 02 told me to turn off my phone a number of times during the day, so that it could go into a boot up process.
There is no real way to trurn the device off, but what they will be wanting you to do is disable the phone section (do this by turning on flight mode, or by clicking on the green connections manager in the bottom and click on the phone button. Click the phone button again to turn it on.)
Start -> Programs - Wireless Manager -> All Off (This switches of the phone.
Then use the phone on/off button at the top of the screen there, to switch it back on and force your SIM to re-register with the network, which should have the desired effect your after.
Taking out the battery is the only real 'off' button.
thanks for the replies dudes
did you try holding the power button as well? that works on my wizard
not sure if it's true for all wm5 though
i held the power down button for some time and it blanked teh screen. when i held the power button again for a few seconds the screen came back to life, but this time there is no "back light(?)"
how do i get back the "back light(?)"

There remains a bug, it seems, that sometimes prevents the backlight from firing up when starting the device.
It used to happen on my XDA2i and still happens on my Exec.
I usually have to get it in a good light and go to settings and move the brightness slider to get it working.
Turning off the device, I find, is actually achieved by pressing the power switch before closing lid.
I find I get much more out of each charge if I do this rather than just close the lid.
That of course turns of the PDA functionality of the device. The radio (phone) service is still disabled via Flight Mode.
somehow i double posted...sry
thanks for the reply
i guess by pressing the power button, the pda goes ito some sort of sleep mode, since it does not boot up later, correct?
when it is charging up using a usb cable connected to my pc, the backlight is turned of, and no amount of pressing buttons seems to turn on the backlight, is that correct?
i checked out the brightness level sliders, there are 2, the
1. on battery which is somewhere in between
2. on power which is "slided" to the left, is that its correct position?
you will probably find it will selfboot at midnight.. this appears to have been intentional in the design of all the XDA's.
Thia can be a nuisance but it is probably to do with reseting timers. alarms etc
The backlight is configured to be on/off during external power and on battery in which ever setup you choose.
The actual levels you set it at are your choice ..
I set mine to be off after 5 mins on external power i.e. when charging except when i use tomtom and want it to stay on whilst externally powered.
On these occasions I change the setting before the journey
Your original question with reference to O2 making changes that required you phone to be off, in my experience, means not having the O2 sim in the device.
thanks for the reply dude
i think my questions have exceeded the remit of this thread. i will start another thread for the backlight questions

Toggle Screen/Backlight Application

I am looking for a stand-alone application which will toggle the screen and backlight which I can link to one of the buttons on my M700
Background: I am using the GPS for tracking on my phone. When I turn on the GPS & Logging I then turn the screen off using a short-cut from Pocket Power Manager.
Normally I would have to use the power button on the phone to bring the screen back BUT this disconnects the GPS so screws up and logs I am writing so looking to find an app which will purely turn the screen on (using remote control apps i can see with the screen off everything is still running there as normal)
have you tried holding the power button for 2-3 seconds?
in my htc universal it toggles the backlight off & back on again, without going into standby.
Mine doesn't seem to do that. Well it turns the screen back on but it also disconnects the GPS at the same time.

Backlight off/on when locking/unlocking Blackstone

Hi,
In lock mode backlight stays on albeit on a lower level, but still. This causes problems like:
1. it uses valuable battery power
2. maybe even more important: it is too much light in my bedroom (need a good rest).
Furthermore: the best mobile ever will be gratefull if we don't use the power button for switching backlight on/off, showing this by a longer button live.
The best solution would of course be if when locking/unlocking the phone the backlight would go completely off/on.
I can't find this combination of functions (un)locking + backlight (on)off on the forum. Any genius ideas?
Thanks

Screen went black, phone still working

My phone's screen stopped working whilst I was using it(1). Other than that the phone is working(2). Are there any general tips for how to get it working again other than "take it somewhere to get repaired"?(3) It's a Sony Xperia Z3, just over 3 years old and has been very well treated.
1) browsing and listening to music. the music played but the screen went blank. i've long pressed power; held power and volume up until the vibration; pressed the yellow button under the sd card cover.
2) led flashes. phone rings when phoned. pressing power toggles the screen between black and the very slightly not-quite-black you get normally when there's a "black" background on a site/photo.
3) seriously, i know that there are places which repair phones.

Question Strange screen flickering when Power saving is on

UPDATE:
I managed to record when it's covering the whole screen. Please see that two added videos ("Extreme").
Well I guess it's time to report to Samsung.
-------
Hi,
I managed to capture a strange screen flickering. In this video - just a small bar (and only visible when scrolling).
In all other cases - it covers the whole screen and the only way to get rid of it - turn off power saving mode (impossible if all screen is covered with this static) or connect to power supply.
This happens only when the Power saving is ON (in my case - automatically if battery goes below 25%).
Turn Power saving off and it goes away.
Any idea what's that?

If you turn on standard rather than adoptive display at the same time as power saving ?

Click to collapse
Well.. it's hard to reproduce because it doesn't happen often. But yes.. I could run a test (standard + power saving).
I updated my OP. Please see the videos when it covers the whole screen.
