a stupid question? - General Topics

Perhaps it should be a stupid question .... but, what are the alphabetic characters on the 1,2,3 ... phone keypad button made for ?

SO you can easily tell which numbers to dial for 1800HOTDUCK

advertising phone numbers in the form 1-800-Hotduck is almost not done in Europe, and thus unknown to some people

refering to yourself ?
inquisitive idiots like u that why u replied to the questio?

Maybe if your english was better, I could figure out if that's a question or an insult. if it's an insult I must say you have a lot of nerve. this being your second post. ( the first one about how to add 2% to 200  )

Ah ah ah, very funny M4io.
Advertising phone numbers in the form 1-800-Hotduck, like M4io said, are not done at all in Italy, and so they're really unknown to me, but I'm very curious.
Could someone explaining me how it works, please? Could I have, for example, a "1800jeanluc" number as a personal telephone number?
And if a letter is the third letter on the same key, does one have to press the key multiple times as with a T9 writing method?
Many years ago there ware rotary dial phones. Does one have to rotate the number multiple times to reach that third letter?
Thanks to everybody,
Rudy.

you just replace the letters with the number of the same key.
thus 1800jeanluc = 1-800-5326582 the fact that there are more than one letters on one key makes it easier to form a word of an existing phone number

thank you. very interesting.
I'll try to do of my best to bring this method in italy ( till now unknown ... incredible !)

i cant believe it
1800MACDONALD
1800KFC
1800FREESEX
all these numbers are not recognized in italy and people are unaware of it

you must believe it!
here nobody knows how to do with that silly letters on the keys. all our telephones have them and nobody asks himself what are they for!
I'm rather unluky, my telephone is 5700102 and ... nothing to do with the zero

you know it was U.S who started 1800 numbers i guess and the most numbers used in U.S are 1800PHONESEX or any other crap like this and after that came 1800MACDONALD 1800KFC 1800PIZZAHUT and all stuff....

mhhh if one could choose his own number ....

Problems with Unknown caller

Is there any software or anything else for that matter can display the callers number even if they withhold it
I dont think so. If it isnt sent then you cant do much about it, there may be something that interrogates the exhange but I havent heard of it.
There is a piece of software however called Smart Filter, that lets you reject almost any variable of call, i.e. any with-held, or any not found in your phonebook, or any user in your phonebook you wish to set up etc.
Not the same as what you want, but it might help...
So where do you get this software from?

Thanks for that.

My apologies for not including the link.
I just thought that typing "Smartfilter Pocket PC" into any search engine was easy enough that anyone could manage it.

Someone somewhere must have cracked this, it's to clever for me and would not know where to start, surely everybody want's know who are ones making these type of calls and love to fire back to them with knowledge that they don't know how you found them.
Come someone from must be able to work what to do.

Many GSM providers offer such a service (identifying anonymous callers), called also "anti-CLIR". Check with yours, but registration is in general rather costly.

WAp sites - please help

I have an XDA 11i - -was on contract but I use ao2 pay as you go SIM card .
I can make and accept phone calls, and send recieve emails etc but I can only view a couple of web pages ie BBC home and Google ( only images!)
and they are both WAP sites.
If I try any other site it just says CANNOT CONNECT.
To get a bit of news I have to use the following
wsp://news.bbc.co.uk/mobile/bbc_
Or for weather i use
wsp://wap.weatheronline.co.uk/02
Can you suggest another way of connecting or any other wap addresses ?
Glad of any help
please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!
please dont ask the same question in more then 1 of the forums
and when you do please dont bumb them all
I tried other forums BECAUSE there were no replies - seems acceptable to me .
What does "bumb" mean anyway?
bumb mean pumping ones thread to the top of the forum
and the problem with posting more the one place
is that maybe nobody answer because nobody know
if everybody just kept posting when they dident get an
answer as fast as they wanted the the all the visible
posts would be the same questions
What does DK mean at the side of your location ?
Are you intentionally using WAP sites or are you trying to access the WWW?
I'm afraid despite your several posts and despite your bumping of all of them, it's still not clear what the exact problem is.
It being full of typo's and spelling mistakes doesn't help make the question particularly clear, either.
Please tell us exactly what the problem is. Do you mean to use GPRS instead of WAP, cos I don't know of anyone who would use WAP over GPRS nowadays.

Hmm if only the flag gave some clue....
I find your tone insulting !
I am dyslexic - which means that I have problems with the written English language , grammer and punctuation .
I do , however, consider other people's thoughts and feeling before I write nasty remarks.
I shall find another , hopefully more helpful and considerate site to use from now on.
Your comments have left me feeling angry and upset but just remember WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND !!
Hmm, ever so slightly over the top.
I am sorry if it offended you, but if we cannot understand the exact nature of your question, how on earth are we supposed to be able to help?
If you had read my reply without the mad-goggles on I did not make nasty remarks, but merely pointed out that as the original post had mistakes and typos the meaning was hard to work out.
It being full of typo's and spelling mistakes doesn't help make the question particularly clear, either.

We are not at school and this is not a Correct English Only Language forum !
I spent years at school suffering at the hands of people like yourself.
If you are so clever you should be able to decipher my jumbled ramblings.
Also , call me sensitive but I find this posting..
" Hmm if only the flag gave some clue.... " insulting.
I know many people who are dyslexic so I know all about the condition. I also know that the vast majority who post on here who don't spell properly do so because they can't be bothered.
The flag comment was separate and in jest. If someone had directed what I said instead towards me, I would have laughed and thought "doh". It was posted in jest as the wink was designed to show - and for that matter as an attempt to tell you that I was not making a offensive remark related to my previous one.
DK, plus it is the Danish flag that says Denmark when you hover over it. It SHOULD give some clue...it's a national flag afterall.
To be insulting insulting is to be offensive to somebody, or to be insensitive; to show contempt, etc. I said (paraphrased) "I don't know what the question is as there are lots of spelling mistakes and typo's. Please clarify what you mean" and "hmm if only the flag gave some clue".
You're quite right, we are NOT at school or in the school playground. Inferring I would bully people with conditions such as Dyslexia is the ONLY insult in this thread. Don't attempt to tar me with a brush, thank you.
I no longer wish to discuss this, I am profusely bored with it.
Zincubus................what planet are you living on mate........I could retort with other insults but as I am now confused at to exactly what now constitutes an insult - and for fear of you assesing my post as bullying and threatening, I have decided not too. I would take your own advice and find another forum, but would tread carefully, as people whom try and help with advice FOR FREE dont often take kindly to threats and insults - Quoting you ' what goes around comes around' - Do you sell pegs and read tea leaves? should anton.valleyman now be twitching as you spike and prod his vodoo doll......and by the way, a sense of humour is a good idea too; as using forums as a form of indirect communication, wit and the occasional sarcasm is to be expected, not a personal insult to the receiver of said humour! As a greater man than me once said 'Chill Dude'
From all decent and kind people on the forum, Zincubus has left the building.

PS. I hate to pick people up on spelling, but you're English (I presume), and this has to be worth quoting (from Blackadder's Christmas Carol):
Ebenezer: ... [Baldrick gives him the card again] "A Merry Messy Christmas." "Christmas" has an H in it, Mr Baldrick.
Baldrick: Oh...
Ebenezer: ...and an R. Also an I, and an S. Also T and M and A... ...and another S. Oh, and you've missed out the C at the beginning. Congratulations, Mr Baldrick! Something of a triumph, I think -- you must be the first person ever to spell `Christmas' without getting any of the letters right at all.

Sorry for the bad title of my thread
I recently joined to this great forum hoping you'll solve my problem
I just bought that damn O2 xda mini S mobile (for me and my social situation a very expensive mobile) with about 12 months of my total monthly salary
I thought that I've already entered a world of new technology!!!!
I don't know what is wi fi for? and don't want to know
I don't know what is the radio version update for what? and also doesn't intended for that function?
all I wanted is to read some books , apply few calendars , perform some tasks , and that's all
I was shocked with a damn hanged device.
an incoming call with hanging , a SMS hangs my device.
and you still talking about great device with GPRS and a great wi-fi?
what is that where is the functionality of this stupid device as a moooooooooobile?
I tried many OSystems and no improvements
Not the manufacture's one , Not any of that forum ?
My question is . Is this a true mobile?
I don't think so.
Sorry for my bad english
Is this a question? Then yes.
ok im just going to say you shouldnt check this post for a couple days because other users are going to flame the hell out of you.
Now, there are things that we here at xda-developers have done to our phone to make them work very fast and become very reliable. I suggest that you look at some other posts and try to figure things out.
There will be a picture of your phone and then there will be different sub-forums, please just look.
You could at least type "what is wi-fi" into google, it'll will tell you the answer in less then a second.
But getting back to your post, im running Wm6 on my HTC Wizard, and it's incredibly fast and reliable.
so what are you trying to get across that you don't like your phone? And what do you mean about deceiving us.. who are we( this thread) deceiving. You posted this in the Wizard Mobile 6 part of the forum but you don't mention anything about WM6? so I dont understand what your trying to get at except that your unhappy with your device which I'm sry for but this site has done nothing but wonders for me and i thank everyone for helping out esp with my questions that are sometimes dumb.

I do not have any problems with my phone!!! Do you know why i dont? cus i took the time to research about my phone and read what can be done to it to make it so much better. Yes when i first got the phone with the T-mobile rom, i was abit let down, but that is cus the rom was badly made. But i am now running WM6 and it is running faster then i have ever had it, and i built it myself use a kitchen, so it is how i want it not some company.
Can i just say that the phone goes for about £200, I could have got you a Good PDA for less that will "read some books , apply few calendars , perform some tasks". And that you dont know what WIFI is and dont want to know, just says alot about you!!! I would just sell it to someone that knows What to do, and go back to using call boxes, (thats if you could work that out)

It must be a joke. You buy a 12 months pay PocketPc and you don't even know what it does ? How old are you ? Why do you need "such an expensive" tool ?
One more question : How much did your Wizard cost ? I am just curious.
One more thing ... Why did you post this thread and What's it's purpouse ?
A. It's a complaint ? To who ?
Or
B. You're just getting bored, so you said ... "Hmm...why don't I post this and see how many fools waste their time writing "Wtf is wrong with you" messages ?"
C. You were ... just furious about your 12 months pay investment so you began thinking it's time to find somebody to blame.

I will answer your questions . I hope your all questions
First answer I'm 44 years old
2nd I bought that device to help me in my job as i'm a doctor and have many
references , cases , calendars , and my patients' tasks, etc.
by the way the OS now in my device is your Xplore 1.1
In our country the mean monthly income is about 80$ (not me of course)
and this device costs me about 440 $
3rd question yes this device turns me mad as I surprised with it hanged and lost my incoming calls and sms
I tried everything I could and later I entered this forum may be I found an
answer to my problems
It doesn't matter to me if Wi-Fi , GPRS are excellent or not as these are not
of my importance
at all I thought I finished carrying my lab-top everywhere and replaced it with
a mini laptop with but unfortunately I finally carry a hanged device
I have one question to all of you
How many time you soft reset your device/day ?
Me at least 10 times a day.
Hope I answered your questions.
Thanks to all posts
0 times a day.
And you're a "doctor"?
Oh christ.
Most of your problems come from junk 3rd party software....

Removing the HTC predictive text thing?

On my original Orbit, the predictive text was the built in WM one (even after the WM6 update), but on the Orbit 2 it's the black one which isn't the WM6 one but presumably is the HTC replacement. However, I don't like it. Partly because I type a lot of texts from my PC using Pocket Controller Pro to type directly into the message. With the HTC predictive thing, if I type at normal speed, it drops characters, but the original Microsoft WM one doesn't. So now I have to type v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y, which is a PITA.
So that's a long winded way of asking whether I can switch back to the Microsoft predictive text.. thanks!

Still nothing. "Is there a specific google search I should try which will give me the right answer?". If you've got a point to make about looking up answers then you're not making it very well. Perhaps demonstrate that the answer is out there and easily found by showing me what I should be looking for. Stuff like "remove polaris xt9" "remove touch cruise xt9", doesn't give me any site that tells me what I need to know. Presumably you know different, so let's see what you've got.

What a twat! If you know the answer, then share it - or even better, put it in the Wiki. Don't post three times on the same topic, just to tell the OP that he should Google for it - especially when it patently isn't intuitively obvious to find.
(I too would like to get rid of this Predictive Text mode, and I too am unable to find it using search engines - and yes, there are other search engines than Google.)
Besides him being a twat in other posts, he's got a valid point here.
RTFM, it's in the user manual that came with your HTC Polaris. Read it again, it's easy to spot.
Go to your keyboard options and select the specific keyboard settings... his hint about XT9 should be all you need by now.
By the time I finished typing this post and went back to thread listings I saw this:

search and you'll find.. Most of it is already posted (besides the various hardware bugs this type of device is suffering from )

Printed (official) user manual, recieved whith the polaris device (you know... little black book whith "manual" printed on the cover), page 56-57... detailed description of the XT9 settings, how to reach them, and which one does what...
Also on page 52-53 (viewed whith Foxit), the same pages can be found... So please next time use the search tool (yes, it can be used in pdf readers aswell)...
Whith my (almost) every post, I provided you whith info... but I'll make something obvious clear: You can't have the old WM word suggestion back (unless you can cook a ROM whithout the HTC XT9)... you can only make it behave like the "Classic" one, but nothing else. For that you can find a detailed description in the manuals.
Also the SIPs provided by HTC, are buggy as hell... if you haven't noticed already...

Really? But according to you, I should RTFM for my answers. Why suggest that if it actually doesn't solve the problem? Have you realised now how your RTFM suggestions were actually unmerited? Has the penny finally dropped that from day one, whilst you were pontificating from your high horse, you were actually talking utter ****e because you hadn't read the original question properly? I think so.

Since you can't prove a negative, how can you be sure that it can't be done? There's probably loads of things that people think can't be done until someone discovers a registry setting or some other way of doing it.

Yeah, well it's perhaps about time you used *your* head and read the posts properly before going off on one and acting like a spoilt little twat when you were actually *wrong*.

Post me a single link where this question has been asked before and which has reasonable answers that are conclusive either way (ie, which would lead me to not bother asking the question myself). Let's see what you've got for once.

LOL! So if a "related", but actually *different* question is asked, that's not allowed is it? You don't half talk some utter crap. Oh and FFS, learn to spell "with".
Hmmm... nice argument there, nicely dissected my post, but it still doesn't explain your lazyness. RTFOP, yeah well... wasn't question about getting the original Word Completion back? Because HTC's version drops characters? (btw... Which SIP are you using?)

Also the SIPs provided by HTC, are buggy as hell... if you haven't noticed already...

Also 2 words (xt9 polaris) in google turned up this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2082504 so you might be able to get what you want eventually... and I still belive that the manual should have been enough... not for removing it, but for making it more useful for you (or even finding what caused the problem)

yes, there are, but theres a reason for google... you see there are 2 search tools on this forum, one of those is the internal search engine, and the second one is Google... also Google has mapped more of the forum than any other search engine, and the results are more up-to-date...

There is no laziness, not from me anyway. You on the other hand didn't read my OP properly and you thought my question was a simple one where the answer lies in the manual, hence all your RTFM pontificating. You were wrong, but you've yet to acknowledge or apologise.

Yes indeed it was. And what in the manual tells me how to do that? Nothing. So what was with all the RTFM crap?

Riiiiight .. and in those messages you told me to "RTFM" and "Google", neither of which have come up with a working answer. I haven't found one and neither have you. If they were good enough, then how come you haven't come up with a working solution either, huh? Yeah, there's been a "road of discovery", alright, but it's not been the one I asked about...

LOL! I only said that in my last post, and if you hadn't botched up so badly and got on your high horse in the first place, then I'd have had nothing to comment on. Clearly you've got a bee in your bonnet about people posting FAQs (so much so as to include a whine about it in your sig), but on this occasion you got it wrong and were way too eager to jump on someone's back that you simply didn't bother to properly comprehend what was being asked.

Well firstly I'm amused that you would come up with this, despite telling me in your last post that "I'll make something obvious clear: You can't have the old WM word suggestion back". Sounds to me like you haven't actually got a clue what you're talking about.
But I've already tried that and it doesn't work, not on my device anyway, it makes no noticeable difference. TBH I was then a bit worried about installing a cab that turns out to make no difference that I could tell, but dissecting the CAB meant it was easy enough to ensure its changes could be undone with confidence.

Well you're wrong again. The manual doesn't tell me how to restore the WM6 prediction, which is what I asked for. I knew this before I even posted the OP. If the manual was enough, then how come, after all your bleating have you still not managed to point out a working solution?
Next time mate, learn to read the OP properly before making botched assumptions and then acting like a sanctimonious arsehole. You'll only look like a little twat in the long run when it's pointed out to you that you were wrong and have absolutely no basis for your whining.
The manual is useless to me also. I went into the Input mode and disabled everything, but it still suggests word, adds a space, etc.
I prefer to use the Block Recognizer and it continually adds spaces.
If I want it to suggest a word when entering a calendar event, it does not suggest a word even if I turn on the option to suggest words.
Basically, it does everything I do not want it to do!
I did some searches also, but I really did not get any useful results other than the basic text shown in the manual.
It's not my fault that you can't consider the lack of information in the manual and in forums as information in itself.
No info in the maunal, can't restore it to default (whithout tweaking).
CAB's not working, can't restore it to default (whith tweaking) - also according to your last post you found that already, so there is another (older) thread dealing whith your problem (at least partialy).
You don't have the knowledge to restore it, if you had it you would have restored it already.
In conclusion, you can't restore the Original one. How am I wrong?

Funny... that should work properly... have you tried any other ones (3rd party)? If you did, did the XT9 work correctly? (I'm just asking because I use Resco Keyboard, and didn't have any problems whith the XT9)
The best thing you can do about it is to wait for someone comes up whith a solution, but I don't belive there will be one, just newer versions of XT9 that (maybe) works properly. Or try other ROMs (like the upcoming Polaris Project ROM, or bepe's), and hope one of them has the XT9 working properly, or has the original.

There's a lot of information on this site that isn't in the manual. There's information on other sites that isn't on this site nor in the manual. Sorry, but I don't consider a lack of information as a sign that something can't be done. Imagine where we'd be if everyone gave up so easily, nothing would get done.

Manual. Remember, it's "the little black book which has 'manual' printed on it", so I was told - not "maunal". And if you know that there's no info in the manual, care to explain why you kept bleating "RTFM" at me? Wrong again weren't you.

You're wrong because you told me to RTFM when (as I already knew), the answer to my question wasn't there. You were wrong when you suggested I was being lazy. You were wrong in your original misinterpretation of what I'd asked, leading you to give wrong advice. You were in a wrong position to get on your high horse because I actually wasn't guilty of anything that you were pontificating about. You were wrong to suggest that the answer lay in a Google search because you've yet been unable to come up with it. Oh, and you are wrong each time you put "whith" instead of "with", despite me already pointing this out to you.
That enough wrongs for you?

I haven't tried any other keyboards at this stage, no. It seemed sensible to attempt to restore the original before moving onto other alternatives.

Thankyou, some reasonable opinion at last. I'll also investigate what I can do to restore the WM6 predictive text by comparing my Orbit WM6 image with my Orbit 2 WM6 image.
So how do I remove the predictive text thing then?
