[Q] Watching Videos?!

hi, anyone watch movies and that on thier phone? just wondering what the optimum video size would be to get a good picture and make it less flickery! and the best programs to use to convert the size of the movie?

Streaming or stored video files, basically you can use the same parameters and the same tools. I describe streaming only.
Use VLC to stream the video via Wifi or Edge to your phone.
An excellent client is Coreplayer (only 20 bucks)
On VLC set transcoding params like this:
video codec: mpeg4 (alternatively you could use h264)
video bitrate: 300-400kbs (wifi) ; 100-200kbs (edge)
resolution 320x240
audio codec: mp3
audio bitrate: 48-64kbs
container: ts (transport stream)
VLC can stream everything including live TV from TV/Sat cards and also from settop boxes.
If you wonna play files from memstick transcode your videos to files with the wifi parameters.

i used TCPMP with my vox oc'd to 252mhz
it can play most videos stored on my mSD (tv. eps and things of that sort) without having to convert
if i do need to convert, just make sure it's at 320x240

A friend is considering this phone as an upgrade and I'm also interested in finding out about how good video playback on this phone works. Can you install freeware codec packs to support DivX, Xvid and all the other common formats on it like you can with the bigger PDA-style phones? Is its CPU speed enough for it to decode the videos without stutter? Is its built-in player good enough or would I need a third-party app?

I tried it. I think the optimum is Divx or Mpeg4, 320*240 and 512 kbit/s with 44 khz stereo audio. It can be played more than 100 % speed. (TCPMP benchmark).

Depends. If you don't use H/264 / AVC, then, it'll work just great. With AVC, you'll need to stick to CorePlayer and not even then will you 100% frame rate with higher bit rates / resolutions.

how to convert movies ??

i am having problems with converting my file's with my DVD to PDA converter!!
once it's been done my window media player on my qtek9100 (mda vario/xda mini s) wont play the movie file???
does any one know the best format to convert to???
or know any settings the files should be in??
please help!!!!

the problem is media player only plays wmv and mpeg if i remember. most dvd rips are in avi format. if you still want to continue using wmp then you need the codecs
but, to make your life easier i would recommend that you use tcmp or coreplayer. it's an app that can play virtually all kinds of video files

It allows you to only rip the main movie if so desired and dis-regard extra languages.

I use DVD Decrypter and AutoGK to convert movies for playback with coreplayer....made a small tutorial HERE on doing it....the numbers I use are fine for 320x240 (QVGA) devices, probably best to double the filesizes and resolution for a 640x480 (VGA) device.
The movies are generally 2 pass XVid encoded with 128 VBR MP3 sound. Work fine on both software and hardware accelerated playback on the Hermes.

nice guide by the way....but since DVD decryptor is no longer supported it can not bypass the newer DVD encryption....so you'll constantly receive the error messages "Cylinder redundancy error"
Thats why you'll have to download and install the DVDfad HD decryptor from my post above which will bypass all dvd encryption on standard DVD's as well as HD and Blu-ray....to make a back-up of your legally bought DVD's of-course.
Also by default DVD Decryptor creates 1gb files when ripping the movie. You can go into , 'Tools', 'Settings' and on the ''IFO MODE" & "ISO MODE" tabs you will need to set "file Splitting" to "none". This way it creates a single 4gb+ .vob file which is the entire movie. Then import that into Xvid4PSP.
Xvid also allows you to import the multiple 1gb files and auto joins them to create 1 file just as in your guide also....
If original movie is larger that 4.74gb....Xvid4PSP also has "DVD shrink" incorporated into it which allows you to compress a movie to fit standard dvd.

play these files with coreplayer,nd if there is a sound lag u r observing,then goto coreplayer-preferences-advanced-down in the list there is an option for +/- av offset,set it to -600,also like done with advanced setting,once again goto preferances-video,try to change the video drivers from default ati imageon to other given such as raw frame buffer,gdi etc....enjoy

Use Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter (ver. 5.1.22.0305 or higher) and convert video with profile "BlackBerry MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4)" - set resolution to 320x240 or 352x264 (in "Profile Settings"). It may be appropriate and another converter with BlackBerry mp4 support and with resolution 320x240 or 352x264. This will give the best results for playback of video in standard Windows Media Player in HTC Advantage (I think it use hardware acceleration). Better than CorePlayer or TCPMP!!! Recommended for all! Complete synchronization of video and audio, smooth and excellent quality without lags.

Windows Meda Player video conversion

Hello,
Recently I've been struggling to watch videos on my mobile (HTC HD2).
Personally the best option for me is to convert files to mp4 (H264/AVC) and then watch them using standard Album provided by HTC. Unfortunately I have a problem with converting mpeg - TV recorded with my tuner (Compro E900F). The output file is just full of errors.
I noticed that the file is easly converted when sync with Windows Mobile Player. Unfortunately it is resized (smaller) and has to low bitrate.
Question:
1) Is there any way to increase WMP bitrate far higher than in standard settings (max = ~350 mbps)?
2) Is there any way to force WMP not to resize the videos?

[Q] Best format for music, size and quality

Can anyone tell me the best format to store thier music so that the files will stay resonably small but retain thier quality. I guess what I'm asking is, is there a better file format than MP3? I was storing a ton of music on my old phone's SD card, but since the Nexus S doesn't have the "extra" room an SD card allows for, I was wondering if anyone can help me to shrink the files to save space.
Also, I know, I can just carry fewer songs, so please don't put that.

there are better formats, but i don't think the stock music app actually supports them.
The nexus s does have 13GB of space on the SD card, i think that would be enough unless your one of the crazy people who spent $100 on 32GB SD card.

So how big are your MP3 files? Encode your MP3 to VBR 128-192kbps, they sound fine with good file sizes. If you're an audiophille, you'll have your own standards.

AAC uses a different compression algorithm, thereby offering better sound quality at lower bitrates. 96kbs AAC = 128kbs mp3 in terms of quality.
HE-AAC v2 is an advanced format of AAC that allows even lower bitrates, such at 32kbs.
Listen to this song encoded at 32kbs: HE-AAC+v2 (44100Hz [email protected]) 1.1 MB
Yup, the entire song is 1MB!

pretty awesome stuff there, do the android music apps support it though? stock, winamp, poweramp?

I am making a batch file that will automatically transcode any mp3 files in the current directory to HE-AAC v2 mp4 files. All you'd have to do is unzip it, copy the .bat file into the directory where your mp3 files are, then double-click the .bat file. I have it set for 64kbs for highest quality.
There are players available that will play AAC files in android, just search the market.
Also, make sure you edit the .bat file paths to the correct path of lame & neroAAC.

If you're really concerned with file size, 32 kbs is the lowest I would go and 48 kbs is a nice balance of size and quality.

I use ogg vorbis 192kbps which can yield very good quality sound, especially Android has native ogg support.

OGG Vorbis has been consistently proven to yield higher quality audio at lower file sizes than mp3, and about equal to or better than AAC. That's why it's part of Google's WebM video container format. Vorbis is supported by default in Android and is what I encode my music in (along with FLAC).
Windows doesn't support *.ogg by default (open standards aren't their thing), but this link should get you set up to listen on Windows: http://www.vorbis.com/setup_windows/

Ogg is better than mp3, but it gets hard to tell difference between formats once you get to 320kbps. Being open source, ogg benefits from improvements over the years while mp3 is stagnant and costs to include on device. But its well adopted and almost everywhere. Other formats may be better compression, but not well supported like mp3 and ogg.

Bah! No URLs for newbs. Google for: winamp preferences guide, and on that wiki page search for the text "force transcoding"
I was looking into writing an auto-transcode app/script for just this reason, but it turns out that winamp has one built in: I set the "Force transcoding of compatible tracks if bitrate is over __ kbps:" to transcode anything above 191kbps and when syncing music over it works like a charm. You can set it to a couple different codecs, winamp seems to include LC-AAC, AACPlus, mp3, and wav.
Note that these settings only appear when you have your device attached.

Each MP3 averages to about 3-4mb. I only have about 4gb worth, so not a lot, I'm just looking to obtimize space where I can. Is there a specific AAC player for Android that you would recommend?

If you care about audio quality you wouldn't use mp3 any way.
Use 160 its the best middle ground.
Un compressed aiff is best but 10MB per minute is to big for a phone

Im a big advocate of FLAC but size compression is almost non existent

All my music is in mp3 format and I was just discussing with my brother how to improve sound quality. I went to the vorbis site and downloaded "audacity" a free audio converter.
I chose a mp3 file I had which was about 10mb @ 320kbs. Using audacity I exported that mp3 to .ogg and it cut the file size down to 4.2 MB @ 165kbs. Does that sound about right? Does doing a simple export actually improve sound quality? Or just cut the size down.
EDIT: I did some more digging around and apparently converting to ogg from mp3 is not recommended rather to convert to ogg from a lossless format like flac or from CD.

320kbps is damn near lossless, you won't get much more quality from a lossless format.

Use I tunes to convert your music. It does a great job. mine is 192kps. Just about right for me for mp3. I'm just use to mp3. I will try ogg
