ASSOCIATING FILES - General Topics

I have put a midi file on my XDA. How do I associate it to play with Windows Media player? I opened up Windows Media player but there is not a "File Open" facility.
Thanks.

Voice Command - Default Player Problem

I am using Voice Command 1.5 for PPC (O2 XDA IIs) and recently had to do a re-install. This time I put BetaPlayer on before Voice Command and now BetaPlayer activates when I ask it to play a music track. Previously the Windows Media Player would play the music and I cannot figure out how to change the default player for Voice Command!
Of note - It is not MP3 file associations as this still points to Media Player not Beta Player (Clicking on an MP3 brings up Media Player). Also, when I state "Next Track" with Media Player active it changes track ..... very confusing!
I feel that the activation of Media Player is contained in some form of ini file for Voice Command as I have searched the registry for some link to Voice Command and Media Player but been unable to locate this. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most grateful.....
Found it!
It isn't .mp3 file associations it is .asx association (Playlist).
A simple edit of the registry with PHM Registry Editor soon fixed the problem!
I had the same problem, but my other offending player was mortplayer..
now this solution may work for you so here goes.
1....i uninstalled mort player first because mvcommand tried to call each time i tried to call an artist mp3 file.
when yo try to use mvcommand again to call the artist, an error "voice command.asx" would be displayed. mvcommand actually places this file in a temp directory on your pda's memory.
2.......i then used Gsfinder+ a freeware file explorer program to associate the file asx with "windows media player file" by doing a file open... choose program method,
3 now open the asx file, this will load the media player...close it
and try the command to load an artist from mvcommand.
it worked for me.
if your probblem is related to video files the same procedure may work for that too, but am not sure if it will save an wmv or avi file to the temp directory.
Good luck

wma ringtones with PocketZenPhone no more

Hey everyone
I need some help with my XDA.
I can no longer play wma files as ringtones. I could a few days ago.
Im a registered user of PocketZenPhone and I used to have different wma ringtones on different profiles.
Now none can be played.
If I use Pocket Music I can play .wma files but if I go to "Settings --> Sounds & Notifications --> Notifications" and select any wma file, even the build in ones and press play I hear nothing. The strange thing is that I can't even leave the "Notifications" menu.
Each time I press Ok it returns me to "Incoming Ringtone" I have to force to go to Today screen to leave this menu. If I select wav file for ringtone its played OK.
I checked out the forums and the net and found some references to Windows Media Player file associations.
I removed all audio progs and even removed any registry key concerning wma files. I created new association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player does nothing or most of the times it gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again"
What the hell is that? Media Player version is 9 built 14053.
All my ringtones were and are in the \Windows\Rings directory
Registry looks OK
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wma only has a (Default) String value of WMAFile
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMAfile has association with mwplayer.
Any suggestions.
P.S. Sorry for the big post. just tryed to give as much info as possible.
Wma ??
Does anyone has or had similar problem that can help?
i got that problem..
i got that problem too.. mine i uninstalled pocket music.. then it went fine.. i guess all your wma files was running in pocket music.. that it won't play with windows media.. that i didn't get.. coz if a file is associated it still should and can play.. try it if it works...
You are right wma files were played by Pocket Music but not only did I remove the association and unistalled it but also restored association to Windows Media Player. Still no joy though.
Same problem here!
Well, sort of... The thing is that SOME .wma or midi files don't work as ringtones anymore but some others do.
I also use PocketZenPhone.
Weird...
Media Player error reproducing wma files.
Can anybody more experienced with XDAs help us here. The Media Player error when playing wma files from a file manager can be replicated by anyone here?
The firt one plays but the subsequent ones produce the foll. error:
X in red circle, and,
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again".
Is sometheing wrong with Media Player installation?
file association
The key is making sure that the .wma is associated with windows media player. you have to go into the application and un/select .wma to default to windows media player. you can also do this with a tweak program, but its best to do it within the actual applications. otherwise, you will hear either nothing or a warning beep in place of the selected file. This will also hold true for any ringtone program you may have.
I just got this problem too. Tried to open a file through explorer and nothing is set as the defult player for wma files. Any ideas how to set them back to windows media player? Is there a simple reg key that can be changed?
Edit: I installed pocket tweak, but when I go to choose a program it starts in my documents with no way to go back up a level to get to the windows folder (where mplaer.exe is).
Edit 2: I did a soft reset and ringtones worked again. How strange.
Media Player error message on wma lpayback
Well "davidleecpowell" if you read my firts post you will see that not only have I removed association from oher audio player but also completely removed the software except media player. Also re assigned association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file

Its very strange indeed and the last thing want to do is YET ANOTHER HARD RESET.
Suggestions anyone?

How to create Media Player PLAYLISTS?

Hi all,
I'm trying to create or to copy my playlist from the computer to my Magician, but I couldn't! I don't know how to do it.
If I copy the .WPL from my PC to Magician, it doesn't open. When I'm using the Pocket Microsoft Media Player 10, my library have a lists of Playlists, but it's always empty and I don't know how to create one.
Can anyone help me please?
The playlists hold a definitive list of where a file is stored. If you have the stuff in "my music" then the files will be in c:\Documents And Settins\ (Username)\My Documents\My Music, and as such all files in the playlist will be listed in this location, and as this location does not exist in the device, it cannot find the files. You also need to copy the actual music files across, not just the wma files (Music files are mp3, wma, etc.)
If you want to use the device as an MP3 player, you should really get a storage card to store the music on.

I think you got me wrong. I already have a Storage Card and about 100 WMA files. The Library on MP is OK, but I have no Customized Playlists. That's what I want.
Got it?
Thanks!
Ok as to making playlists in Pocket Windows Media Player, i have no idea. i just had a look at my universal and i cant see the option.
Hoiwever, in the program that i use instead of WMP (Pocket music from pocketmind.com), you can make, view and edit playlist easily, plus it has a nice today screen plugin.
so one can not make new playlists in windows media player
The Pocket PC version of Windows Media Player does not allow you to create or edit playlists. But there is a freeware program for it!

"My TV" in Media Player

How do you get files to show up in the "My TV" area in media player? I've tried renaming video files with all kinds of extensions but nothing works.
Answer
Your need windows media center edition then you can transfer your recorded tv. You might be able to convert mpg or avi to either dvr-ms or wtv then use Windows media player to sync it with your phone.
Thanks sandrobber. So are you saying that I can't just change the extension to say "wtv or dvr-ms" and have media player update the library and have it be in there? I would have to use Media center to transfer the files over? Lets say I did that and the file is transferred to the phone and everything is okay. Lets say the file is named "conan.wtv". If I reset my phone or wanted to move that file to another phone can't I just copy that file to the new phone and have media player do a library update and it be in there?

WMP11 sync .WPL (playlist) to WM6.5?

EDIT: Figured it out. Besides, screw using windows media player. S2p, Nitrogen, much more finger friendly. Thanks anyways.
I cannot sync my desktop WMP11playlist to windows mobile media player. This is how I accces and listen to online radio streams. Within WMP11 i have created many .wpl playlists files of various radio streams. I would like to sync these playlist of radio streams to my windows mobile. I want to be able launch windows mobile media player and be able to play the radio streams saved as playlist. Specifically, I have saved a sky.fm radio stream as a playlist in desktop WMP11 and it shows as a playlist in my playlist folder as "sky.fm (80's).wpl." Under playlist in WMP11 it shows this playlist as "sky.fm (80's)." I select the playlist, drag it to the sync bar and then select sync with device. Less than a second later it shows "sync completed." However, in the corresponding folder in my windows mobile nothign shows and thus I cannot play the .wpl playlist file with windows mobile media player. It does not appear to sync the playlist.
I thought I would try to copy over my desktop playlist folder with this "sky.fm (80's).wpl" file into my windows mobile device and the storage card. In both place I see this folder; however, when I slect the file to play, It says something to the effect of no program is asscoaited with that file type.
Why is this? Does the windows mobile media player not allow sycning of playlist between desktop media player and mobile? Is it because the mobile version cannot play/recognize .wpl? If so, then why does it say "sync completed" on the desktop side?
Any help would be appreciated or workaround. Also, I am aware of other apps that allow me to access radio streams for my mobile, but those do not meet a requirement i have. I save radio stream playlist because they allow me to access them via 7MC (media center), WMP11, and was hoping windows mobile media player. Thats my end goal.
Well, found the answer. Apparently windows mobile media playter cannot not play .wpl playlist files of streams that the dektop version saves.
