Three (NEW) SIM in XDA - General Topics

Just wondered if anyone has managed to use a Three SIM in the XDA?
Until Three recently sent me a new SIM my XDA worked happily with the old one. The new one doesn't work though and I'm forced to using my Motorola A920.
Regards
John

I seem to remember reading that 3 have done something clever to stop new 3 SIMS from working in non-3 phones... People were buying PAYG 3 SIMs and then using them on 2G the whole time to take advantage of the cheap phone calls... even though this meant that they were roaming on O2 the whole time and costing 3 loads of money!

Thanks for the reply.
You're absolutely right, but in my case I just wanted to use my WindowsCE based XDA phone instead of the Motorola A925 which 'personally' I hate.
My 3G package includes 500 minutes of free calls across networks and of course in using my XDA all calls were being routed through O2 so it's understandable 3 taking the action of changing the SIMS.
Hope someone can come up with a workaround!
John

Pope is correct. The company blocked any SIMs being used for just roaming on o2.

Best data tariff?

Hi all,
Been browsing the web for a couple of days now in the minefield that is mobile data tariffs.
I guess many people on here use the data facilities on their phones and was wondering what the recommended ones were in the UK?
I don't want mega minutes or texts, but lots of data !
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Don
Get a Three mobile broadband PAYG dongle and us the SIM from there. That's how I do it and it works perfectly.
Dual sim?
Thanks Carphead - I'm already 1 step towards that as I have one of those dongle things - you don't get rumbled by using it in a phone then? Don't see why it should make any difference anyway.
Do you just carry two sims around or have you dual simmed the phone?
Thanks again!
Don
As it's a PAYG Sim is the most I ever leave as credit is £5 then I top up to £15 on the day I need to. If 3 ever get nasty about it or rumble it then I've only lost £5. I have a Tytn II / Vario III and I have WMWifiRouter installed on it. So I never carry the dongle if I need to access the internet via a laptop I start WMWifiRouter and away it goes.
I don't make many phone calls or send texts using the Tytn II at the moment because my main phone is on another contract. But when that contract runs out then I'll be using it as my main phone. I've used it a couple of times when the battery has died or reception has been bad.

[Q] Living in Europe for 3 months, what are my options besides ATT ripping me off?

I'm studying abroad in Florence, Italy for three months. I was thinking of putting in a pay as you go SIM card or something of the likes. How can I still keep data on my phone and what not? What are my best options over there?
Thanks!
Europe has a very different way of charging for calls, when you call someones cell phone you get charged. Data rates and phones rates are higher than the US. In Europe different frequencies are used for data so while you have a world phone you will have limited ability data phone. Use your Wi-Fi for data.
So what to do? First check AT&T's ripoff rates and remember people in the US will not be charged long distance. Google Italian rates. Tell AT&T you are traveling and you would like the SIM unlock code. If they won't then Root your phone.
Your best solution maybe swapping SIM cards back and forth, Italy-US.
Remember the SIM card cover is also the antenna.
Have a great time.

+1, I'd unlock it and use another service while traveling internationally. Maybe prepaid if it's a short period of time?
in my experience, if you tell AT&T that you are going over seas and wish to use a pre-paid card then they will give you the unlock code.. I have had them do it 4 different times for phones i sold to overseas buyers.
Then you might want to get a dual sim card holder, but im not sure how well they work in the inspire. That would make it easy to switch between 2 different sim's without having to remove the cover, etc..
Since I travel some I got curious about dual SIM card holders. Two web sites are of the most interest: simore.us and magicsim.com. It appears simore sells magicsim under it's name. From what I have gleaned the product to buy is magicsim 28th A for the Inspire or the simore equivalent.

T-Mobile $60 unlimited plan

Hi,
I have moved from the UK to the USA and am using a tmob sim in my UK sensation.
Was originally using the $2 per day plan with unlimited 2g data but decided the $60 30 day plan with 2gb of 4g data would be better so I switched.
However, although my account confirmed the switch, when I tried to access the internet, I couldn't and it said I needed to refill my daily amount. Tmob customer services were clueless so they credited me back my money and switched me back to the daily plan.
Would be interested to know if anyone else has experienced similar or it actually worked for them. I am wary of trying it again if it definitely doesn't work.
I am on AR HD 6.7.2 if it makes any difference.
Thanks!
Hi, uhh... T-Mobile is dumb. I would recommend going to a kiosk or a T-Mobile store. I've had many problems with them over the last 5 years, especially as newer phones with newer plans have been coming out. I find it better to go there physically and have them change it.
Oh yeah, welcome to the US!
That's why I did it online and didn't call them. It was only when I called them that I realised they were clueless!
Does the straight talk AT&T sim work ok with a UK sensation?
It should work if your unlocked but I don't think 3g will work. Idk compare your radios to at&t radios

The quality of online support has a wide variate. Probably try again with another guy.
The AT&T also usin GSM network, so the sim should work.
On T-mobile network the 4G connection theoretically would not work, because it requires a device with 1700MHz support. The AT&T using the 1900Mhz. Usually the european smartphones can use the EDGE maximum. I have used a HTC HD2 for 1 month on EDGE. Not baaad, but far from the satisfaction.

AT&T Micro SIM?

First let me start this post by explaining my situation.....
I am on my parents AT&T family plan as a $10 add on dumb phone. Previously I have been using other networks (T-Mobile) smart phones to get around having to pay for a data plan. This has worked for the last several years but I have just now upgraded to a phone with a micro SIM (Nexus 5 if course).
Now to the real reason I am posting...
Will AT&T give me a micro SIM without a smart phone plan? I'm not quite sure, but I am fairly certain micro SIMs are only in smart phones. So logically they would require a data plan to get a micro SIM. I have already cut my regular sized SIM to fit, but I botched the cut a little and while it works I'm afraid it may end up falling into if the tray and getting stuck inside the phone.

I wouldn't worry about it falling into the phone. The tray should keep it where it should be. But you can always go to the at&t store and ask. Just don't give them your name and number until you know they won't charge you. Otherwise you could ask for a new Sim card and try the cut again.

Since AT&T doesn't have a full IMEI listing of Google's Nexus 5 in their databases, it' unlikely that they care or would bother to check - you just won't have access to mobile data - roaming or "home" since the account or line isn't provisioned for it - I used to have a line on Gophone but now keeping one on T-Mo's PAYG only, and, T-Mo doesn't recognize or "identify" it as a Nexus 5 under "My Account" - I just get redirected to the Data Plan web page to sign up or switch plan. WiFi on the N5 functioning well & I'm using Talkatone to call out while sitting in the living room.
Can you request a new micro-Sim over the telephone & switch your line to it instead of making a trip to the store, have your "folks" call - if necessary, you can pop the new micro-Sim into an full-size Sim adapater, and get it activated/working on a "non-smart" or dumb phone first. Then, move it to the N5 to use - those of us with multiple GSM unlocked phones do the moving around all the time and AT&T WS really never give me any hassle, you just won't have access to unpaid for Mobile Data, whether it's 4G LTE, 3G/HSPA or + or 2G/Edge, etc. etc.
Or if your current Sim is truly screwed, order a Sim cutter online, bring an old dumb phone to the store and ask for a new regular Sim and then cut it using the Sim cutter they are less than $5 and they are really easy to use. I've cut quite a few without any issues

I don't know personally since I use LTE. But from what I hear the imei doesn't register. I would take anything the store says with a grain of salt. They want to charge you more if they can.

nexus 4 was detected by at&t
nexus 5 will be as well, especially since it'll be sold by t-mobile (t-mobile phones are detected on at&t, the two carriers probably share IMEI lists)
some people have luck by first adding a data block (no MMS though) on the line while using a dumbphone, then switching SIMs (but you'll need to keep that data block)
I don't think they share lists. I have been using a LG G2X for the last three years without them detecting it. Even when they did detect a smart phone (used a HTC inspire for a while) I just popped my SIM in my old flip phone called them up, gave them imei from the dumb phone and had the data plan dropped.
Sounds like I just need to go to an AT&T store and try my luck. Think I will stick my SIM in my old phone before I go.

If u don't want to ask for a new Sim just cut your dumb phone full size down to a micro (see YouTube). Whether they change your plan is a gamble based in on the imei. Since they do not sell the n5 like tmo and sprint then chances are it's not on their list as a smart phone.

go read this thread. a lot of t-mobile phones are detected... those who aren't are either lucky or didn't get caught in the sweeps

If I use 3g sim card on this phone, will mobile data not work at all?

Not even at slower speed? AT&T said that mobile data doesn't work because it's a 3g sim and this is a LTE phone.
I use a 3G sim in my d821 and 3G works fine

So you just popped the SIM in the phone and it works, or did you need to make some modifications to settings?

I don't know specifically about AT&T network, but that sounds like a load of BS!
I've used a standard SIM, a few years old, so before 4g existed, which is data enabled in my N5 and have happily used 2g/3g/H/H+.
Only last week did I upgrade to a 4g contract with new SIM

Of course it's load of BS! We called again, asked to speak with a supervisor, but there are 4 people ahead of me, they immediately gave me a $30 credit for the data plan and sending me new SIM.
Still, that's BS, it should work without any problem.

yep i did. I'm using the phone in singapore on a 3G plan and there's no modification to any settings needed (at least for my case). It should be the same throughout, the most would be having to set up apn and stuff.
Can someone explain, how this simcard bs goes in the usa? I realy try to understand, but the more I read about these data, 3g, 4g/lte posts it makes the less sense to me.
I have a 4 yours old sim card in my nexus, I made that to micro sim size by a microsim shape and scisors, and all 2g/3g/hspa,hspa+/4g/lte works witouth calling the provider for a new sim, or change some apn settings. Even if i go to austria I can get 2g/3g...lte with data without any problem with my simcard from hungary.
So how it goes in the usa?

people, especially ill-informed consumers, get lied to by customer reps (or the customer reps are ill-informed themselves)
remember, two of the four major carriers (Verizon, Sprint) are CDMA, and they (used to) have total control over their phone selection... you can't bring your own phone to their service

I agree with you on the ill-informed consumers. This is my daughter's phone and unfortunately I am out of state this week on business and could not make the call to AT&T. My wife (who made the call to AT&T) and daughter do not have the same knowledge that I do and I know for a fact that they were given false (to say it nice; BULL****! to be politically incorrect) information and they have to leave with it until I find the time to call AT&T and "remind" them gently that I am out of contract on four lines, or until the new 'free' SIM that AT&T mailed will arrive.
