Use in the US and the UK - General Topics

Hi folks:
I went to the UK for the first time since I bought my MDAII last fall. I have the US T-Mobile service with unlimited GPRS. I was very glad when I arrived at Heathrow and I saw my phone signal "bright and clear". But I was surprised to also see my GPRS signal on and working!!!
I hesitated for a moment, and was too excited to hold myself. I decided to check my emails, and voila... it worked perfectly and fast. I am confused now since I thought that the GPRS access was driven by the APN setup in my MDAII. But it worked flawlessly for as long as I was in the UK.
I am a bit scared now about the charges for the data services (I also made and received a few phone calls). I guess I'll find out when I get my next bill.
Can anyone explain, just so I know, how is it that my GPRS worked in the UK?
Thanks in advance for your knowledge.
FMW

Roaming?

As crusin'thru says, you have roaming... my GPRS etc works too in the US albeit at quite a considerable cost... better to find a free wifi spot somewhere and 'net there instead.

TMobile Web\Tzones Loophole

While this may sound like me complaining, I do understand I ws getting away with not having to pay for internet.
Has anyone else noticed that the TZones loophole has been cutoff. At approx 1:30am MST this morning both my brother and I noticed that our phones stopped syncing with our exchange OTA. He looked in to a couple of things on the exchagne and couldn't find anything wrong. We both power cycled our phone and still nothing. I then tried to browse the net and sure enough I couldn't. I checked\double checked\triple checked all of the settings - wap.voicestream.com - 216.155.165.50 and still nothing. I posted a thread on Howard Forums and have received a couple of responses but not enough for me to think that TMo stopped the service. Maybe they are just doing some sort of upgrade\maintanence? Wishfull thinking. I guess if not I will have to pay which is not a problem. The nice thing about the "loophole" was getting Exchange to sync OTA. I rarley used it for browsing.
I too posted in HoFo about the "outage"...
I've been out of contract with t-mobile for over a year now, enjoying the "non-proxied" direct internet access for $5.99/month that they've been offering- but in my situation, there's no way I'd pay them $30/month for unrestricted EDGE-only access.
I've been a t-mobile customer for 10+ years, but I'm strongly considering jumping ship to Cingular--doing the math, I can go to them for $20 more a month instead of $30, get rollover, AND get 3G speeds (and services, in my area) on my 8525. Hotspot service is useless to me, since I have municipal wifi access where I am 99% of the time.
So, $30 more for EDGE speeds (and useless hotspot service) or $20 more for 3G speed? For me, it's a no brainer.
I am back up and running. I removed the "My ISP" connection and set up a new one under "My Work". I then set up the Proxy agian to use port 8080 instead of just 80.
I've done the same--however, most data-capable apps (gmail app, resco radio, remote desktop) don't seem to be proxy capable and fail to work.
Oh well. Direct Push is working, and PIE can browse the web. It was nice while it lasted.

With the way I am set up I can do both, email and browse. While the browsing seems to be limited to true WAP sites I don't really mind. I really only need to connection for Push anyway.
The same thing happened a few months ago. It lasted for about 3 or 4 days and then everything was back to normal.
I'm confused. Are you the guys that are back up and running paying at least $4.99 a month for data or are you getting completely free data access??

Personally I am paying $5.99 for TMobile Web (TZones) and yes I am back up and running.
I'm also paying $5.99 a month for T-Mobile web and I just checked and I'm back up and running again without having to change any settings.
I'm also paying $5.99 for T-Mobile web and I just checked and I'm also back up and running without any changes in my settings.

So you don't have the Proxy settings in? That is the only way I can get mine to wrk for both Browsing and Push Email.
i wish mine still worked.
none works with or without proxy, i had it working for a few weeks when i got my PPC phone, but now its gone, i dont think i have tzones but i do have unlimited txt/mms stuff (family plan)
Mines back to not working again either. They must be having some kind of problem with their servers because i I can't even get to the T-zones and even if they were trying to close some loopholes so that people couldn't access the entire net they wouldn't shut down T-zones with it.
T-Mobile Making a Big Mistake
I just found this thread. I have two plans with T-Mobile. One for myself (work) and one for my family. I have been with T-Mobile for a year. After coming from Verizon and Cingular. It's been a good experience.
However, T-Mobile's lack of either a 3G network or a decently priced plan is going to push me back to Cingular. I used a Wizard on T-Mobile for the past year. I paid $29.99 per month for their "Total Internet" package. The package includes unlimited Edge Internet and Hot Spots. The hot spot service is next to worthless.
Until T-Mobile offers a full 3G network, the price for unlimited internet on a Wizard, Dash, or Wing should be $14.99 (half what they are now charging).
Since March, I've been using a TyTN on T-Mobiles network. One week ago, I got a Cingular ATT card and Cingy's data plan for $44.00 and it is worth it. I'm crusing the web between 400 and 1000 kbps. On T-Mobiles Edge, I get 75 to 146 kbs. This is not worth $29.99.
I'd keep my wife and kids on T-Mobile and get data plans for two or more of this if the cost were no more than $14.99. That's all it's worth. I've talked to many loyal T-Mobile customers who are switching to AT&T for the same reason.
I hope T-Mobile is listening. They need to get their 3G launched and keep their data rates competetive until they do.

o2 Upgraded There Network? Orbit 2

Just a quick one for us Orbit 2 owners (or indeed any HSDPA o2 users)
Anyone noticed it seems o2 have upgraded their network?
I seem to be getting HSDPA connections everywhere, where I used to get 3G, 3G where I used to get EDGE and EDGE where I used to get GPRS so everything seems to have gone up a notch.
I don't seem to get GPRS anymore... just EDGE or above.
I only get EDGE at home though although 150-300k EDGE isn't exactly terrible on a PDA for free... and until BT get's their finger out it means 150-300k internet on the PC... what I'm posting this on!
Just quite chuffed!
i'd agree with you...
I've notice that i generally get hs now and i'm certainly noticing the edge symbol a lot more!
my speed has been great since i phoned up and asked to but increased. as suggested on this forum. just done a test this mornibg.
1452kbps Nice!
Yeh Same for me, I used to get only gprs, and occasional 3g, and now im getting Hsdpa pretty much everywhere, which makes youtube on the go brilliant!
Where are you guys from? I'm from Merthyr Tydfil in the south Wales valleys. Bit nervous of changing to O2 yet as I dont know anyone with an O2 phone to check what their 3G coverage is like. According to their website, only Cardiff and Swansea have 3G.
Some parts of Merthyr have 3G. Went up there in the car the other day and got 3G at the VW garage.
Got HSDPA in Abergavenny, but only 2G in Gilwern.
Still only got GPRS in plymouth. Still no HSDPA, but 3G in the city center
DNS resolution has improved markedly in the past fortnight in my opinion. Before I was waiting many seconds to connect to a page (resolve the DNS) but now it is much quicker.

Hi. Yes, I have to agree too. Over here in Northern Ireland, my coverage was very poor - only Edge available in Belfast - and I live about 20 miles away. Then about 3 weeks ago, I suddenly started getting 3G, and last week it changed - most of the time - to H. I checked te O2 website, to discover that there wasn't even any H apparently planned for here. Rang O2 to check if it was just a test, but they didn't have a clue.. Surprise, surprise..
Agree'd,
Great in Leicester, locks straight on to H as soon as I'm near... Very fast! And freeeeeee!!
Northamptonshire's main towns are covered, smaller towns are getting there!!
Still no upgrade in speeds here. maxing out around 128kbits/sec. Anyone have any great success with customer services, or is Emma in the Press Office Still the best way to get the upgrade. Has anyone's speed been upgraded without asking?
nothing haappened in Glasgow. If i live in some village with sheeps with nearest shop 15miles away i dont care. But Glasgow??? Probably they dont like weggies :-(

advice on O2 Germany ServicePlans, and where ha the wap-flat gone?

Does anyone one remember the 5€/WAP2.0 flat from O2-Germany like 2 years back?
I was abroad for a while and lost my orientation with all the service plans in Germany..so i wanted to ask in here for some tips.
I want to get an XDA Diamond with either Genion-M or Genion-L-Aktion..Direct-Push isn't that important for me, HomeZone is important, and I do check Wikipedia or Dictionary-Searches over the net quite frequently and write occasional emails on the go..O2 seems quite expensive in that respect.
Anyways, O2 doesn't seem to have attractive service-plans for mobile-internet anymore..from what I've found, so I've stumbled on the www.1und1.de 9.99€ Network-Service which includes a SIM and a full internet Flat for your phone which is quite excellent IMO..
Is there anyway to use the 1und1 proxy on your phone with an O2-Sim for the Network? that would be interesting ..
Or what are youre workarounds? data-plans and options?
I don't think so.
The problem is that you get charged for using the network, not for using the proxy itself.
1&1 uses the Vodafone network whereas O² uses its own (crappy!!) network.
Stefan
P.S: Why is 10€ for 300MB sooo bad??
isn't it 10€ for 200mb? its not so bad, also you get this MMS Email flat-rate..dont know how useful that is though..
I'm really considering the 10€ 1und1 SIM contract..but then the phone costs will blow up..and you dont get a homezone feature..
How far do you get with the 200mb in a month? enough for push-mail? and dictionary searches?

strange Fuze data problems

I got my Fuze last night and the problem persists. AT&T is looking into it but seems to have no clue.
I can use the 3g data network for the weather app, Tomtom but when I attempt to load anything via Opera or IE it fails.
BUT if I load Wifi, then navigate to google.com for example, then turn off the wifi, the 3g data network starts to work. If I close opera and reload it the 3g data network stops working again.
Any ideas?
Jeff
Which data plan did you have before you got the FUZE. I got my FUZE and the sales rep. who sold it to me took off all data since I opted not to go with the PDA package.
I called in and complained and the customer service rep. re-added MediaNet for me. Now I'm having the same issues you mentioned again. WTF is going on.
Just my two Cents
I would take it back and try another phone in the store. Mine works fabulous out of the box.
I had the iphone data plan. AT&T has a support ticket submitted but they seem to be clueless as to what is going on. I am signed up for the correct 30.00 dollar media net plan.
Who knows. They said they would call me back later today. I will let you know if they fix the problem. I have already done a hard reset and it made no difference.

For what it's worth, I had all kinds of strange data problems when I switched from my iPhone to my Tilt. Had to call AT&T several times before I got a tech who figured out that they had changed my data plan in one place but not another place so it was still picking up the iPhone data plan.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I unfortunately tried that already with no success. I probably have incorrect settings on AT&T's end in my account.

This is most likely the case. I am sitting in an area with full 3G signal and getting speeds of 20k/second. This is all after I switched to the FUZE from the Tilt which had a MediaNet Plan and now am on a PDA Personal plan.
This is Total BS.
Yes i have the SAME PROBLEM,
i used to have th $20 iPhone plan, because i had the original iPhone.
i went into the store and they upgraded my plan to the $30 Fuze plan.
But now i have the same problem, everything works fine on wifi, but when i go into Opera using 3G, it says
"ERROR!: The remote server refuses to perform the request"
and i tried using the Instant messaging application and i get "Request could not be complete (code: 403)
This is awesome. Back 2 years ago when they first rolled out 3G I would reliably get 900 Kbps on my TyTn. Now, here we are 2 years later and I can semi-reliably get 25 Kbps on my FUZE (when it decides that it wants to connect).
What area is everyone in btw?
In my area (Tyson's Corner, VA), AT&T's explanation is that there is "degradation on a few of the towers in that area". Take that for it's worth.
im in Miami Florida,
i have yet to call at&t, but i will in a few minutes
im having the same problem i got mines on nov 10 and i cant connect to opera or AIM over 3g

ok i just called at&t support.
and i told them my problem, and they noticed that i had the iPhone before i got the Fuze.
They transfered me to Technical support and they guy tried and fixed the network on the spot, but he said, that wat they needed to do is get the "iPhone" out of their network. Because the network still thinks im using the iPhone, so it uses a different type of data transfer.
He said this usually happens to ppl that have an iPhone and then switch to a "normal" phone.
He submitted a paper, that will get the iPhone information out of the network, and my Fuze should be working just fine in 24-48 hours, they said they will call me.

They just called me back and said the iphone was still listed in one of their systems on my account. So the iphone even in death haunts me. (ok it didn't die but I want to smash it)
She also said that my inconsistent data speeds are a result of an outage in my area that has been going on since the 6th of Nov involving 3 towers. They comped my data charge for the month so I guess I can't complain too much.
She said that she will call me at the end of the week to make sure everything is working. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
Jeff
I'm having the same problem in Opera. Opera works fine on phone reset. Howvere, at some point, it just starts returngin the error message "The remote server refuses to perform the request..." The strange thing is that Push email, and my data connection in Garmin Mobile XT continue to work.
Between this issue and the GPS not working (without GPS Test), the Fuze is starting to be a pain in the butt.
Workaround
I have the same problem, where X number of hours after a soft reset, my phone's data connection no longer works. Following some advice I found on another forum, I've gotten a work-around, but it's not great.
The theory was that the phone's data connection is releasing it's IP, and the phone doesn't know it, so it's trying to reuse an expired IP. Pressing and holding the end call (upside down phone) button for a few seconds by default, terminates the data connection (color wheel comes up when this process is started). After that, internet seems to function again.
Anyone have a better resolution to this?

[Q] Nexus 5 - UK - Vodafone - HSDPA Connection Issues?

I've got my Nexus 5 and its great and all that but I find it cannot get a decent hsdpa connection on vodafone. My old Galaxy Nexus had no issues but the Nexus 5 is stuck with an E data connection?!
This is on a new SIM.
Anyone having issues?
I've heard nothing, either here or on the OcUK forum, which is almost all UK users. Have you looked on the Vodafone forum?
I'm on Vodafone too, got the 5 on upgrade so they gave me a new sim too. I can connect alright to 4g, it's a bit flakey where my home is (outside the m25) but fine at work (inside m25 but not central london, sort of south west!). When I'm connected it's pretty fast.
If anything though, I noticed when I lose 4g it tends to shove me onto 2g and not 3g :/ Check the coverage you're supposed to get on http://www.vodafone.co.uk/our-network-and-coverage/uk-coverage-map/ then if should be ok (as it worked before for you) give them a shout.
Could either be vodafone being rubbish (happens to me a lot anyway) or a dodgy phone.
Edit: attached a screenshot of my current download/upload speeds- they're not that brilliant, it seems to vary a lot. the best i've seen is 26mbps down.

Hi Ordered another on Vodafone 4G and just got the phone and sim 30 minutes ago. I noticed the Signal was showing as LTE prior to downloading the 139MB forced update and then when it restarted it was showing 4G, So could it be the case that This is the same handset in the states or at least the band setup is at software level ?
Also The Speed I am getting on 4g is really disappointing because I was looking forward to getting more and also, I disable my Data connection but noticed that Wifi even though showing as connected is not able to browse the web or do anything data related. This is worrying.
Attached is my speedtest, I will be doing further test at every hour and will post the results as well.
Also the Postcode where I did this test is given here : TW8 9AX

Haha, that's weird, you're not far from where I am. I'm currently in TW16. I just tried it again, and got 22.21mbps down and 14.91 up. I've never seen an upload speed as fast as yours but obviously we care about download more!! weird.
When I'm at home though (GU24) the 4g is a lot flakier. in fact the signal full stop has been dropping left right and centre last night, it was fine the first couple days but last 24 hours have been dodgy. I can't work out if it's the area or the phone. On my N4 i had to force it to 2g cos the 3g was so bad, so I even tried that with the N5, but the signal still kept randomly dropping then reconnecting. Frustrating. Don't know if it's phone, vodafone, or both!

Got switched over this afternoon to 4g, in the City London very fast, when I was walking home done another speed test hitt alomst 47 down and 15 up. Already chewed through 700mb today, setting up phone from scratch. Anyhow impressed so far, in pay monthly contract for another 3 months will then decide who to sign up with.
