Connecting XDA 2 to iPod - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Accessories

Hi
I have done quite a lot of research on this and I was wondering if anyone could say whether this would be likely to work or not. I would like to connect my XDA 2 to my 40GB iPod in order to use the disk space to watch videos. Here is the proposed method to get it all to work:
1. Buy the O2 XDA 2 Backpack:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=108741
This adds a CF slot to the XDA 2.
2. Buy a CF USB Host controller:
http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/subpages/cfu1u.html
This will enable USB host support on a Pocket PC device with a CF slot.
3. Buy an Apple USB sync cable:
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObj...6pxnLVl4Qv2bI6fKj1Me6AiUC/1.3.0.5.10.3.4.13.0
This will enable the iPod to be connected to a host through USB.
4. Install the appropriate 3rd party driver, I believe this offers the necessary functionality:
http://www.tjotala.com/hardware/storagebrick/default.htm
With all that in place I would then expect to see some or all of the capacity of the iPod available as a mounted drive on the XDA 2, provided that the iPod is formatted as FAT32.
Have I overlooked something or is it worth trying this expensive method to link the devices?
Ive based some of this theroy from a discussion on connecting an ipaq to an external hard disk here: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=305
Hope someone can help!

Can you get an external HDD for XDAII?

HI,
I've just recently got myself an XDAII and have found that I run out of storage memory easily. Is there an external hard drive available that I'd be able to hook up to the XDAII?
Also, can the XDAII act as a USB host to other peripherals (like an ext HDD or camera)? For example would I be able to download a pic from my camera via the USB to store on the mem card?
I appreciate any advice you can give me!
cheers

nop it's a peripheral itself and that cant be changed
of cause if you buy the backpack and then get the usb CF card it may be able to host
Thanks Rudegar,
I figured as much in regard to the USB host. I'll look into the backpack option though.
cheers
P
Check this out... So far I don't think the unit is shipping. I am hoping it will not disappear into the vaporware albums.

You would of course need a SDIO WiFi card too if you don't have one already.

VGA output?

Hi there,
I'm wondering how the "backpack for Himalaya" is working.
It has a VGA/TV output, whereas the bottom pins on the Himalaya don't have VGA out.
What do you think? How does the screen information "leave" the XDA, if there are only USB, RS232 and audio pins on the connector (according to http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/Connectors )?
All help and tips are welcome!
Cheers,
Tomiki
Hi
Are you sure such thing exists ?
I know that you can pipe-out video from Ipaq H5550 through special expansion slot.
Himalaya doesn't have such connectors (only standard charge/audio/usb/serial).
The only way to get video out from it is to encode it and send via USB.
Just like Microsoft's rdisp does. (crappy.. about 10 fps, and is hard on device's CPU)
Ugh, come ON people.
Take the back OFF your device, and wonder! wonder at the extra connector I just gave your in all its goodness!
That will be £5 for pointing out the bleedin' obvious thank you.
The backpack connects here, you remove the existing back panel to fit it.
And yes, there IS a vga out on it.
Hi Pyrofel,
The thing is: I have a Blue Angel, so I'm looking for something like that on my Blue Angel ) I thought the VGA is converted into USB and leaves the XDA II on the USB, so that the same could be done on the Blue Angel as well.
What do you think?
Otherwise thanks for tlling me the obvious, sorry I couldn'T check it out without an XDA II
Cheers,
Tomiki
i dont think the backpack connector under the back cover of himalaya
are usb
for the himalaya to have 2 usb connectors you could use at the same time it
1 would have to have an usb hub
2 would have to be usb master which it's not
No, the connector under the cover isnt usb
No, vga doesnt come out over USB.
No, ive not seen the vga for Blueangle.
This is a special port, like the expansion port on the old Ipaq models.
I dont ever remember hearing about a vga backpack for anything other than xda II, obviously it sold so well they didnt bother with it on other models.
I think there is an SDIO card with vga out. I dont know where I saw it, but im sure it exists.
well i have seen usb to vga box's
but that would require
1 the pda being able to act as USB host
2 drivers for the box for pda's
i would not hold my breath
Maybe I could take the Blue Angel apart to check out if there's video out or not.
Otherwise Margi used to sell SDIO VGA cards, but it's discontinued.
I think only the Universal can act as a USB host, not the Himalaya, Blue Angel.
Well, I don't know, if somebody finds out something, let me know

and people dont even seem 100% sure that universal support host

Hi robal...where did you get this information from?
I'm trying to modify the driver for the HP VGA-Out card for use with my iPAQ h5550 with PC-Card expansion pack plus.
The card came bundled with driver for WinCE2.1 only & meant for Jornada 600 series handheld PC using Hitachi SH3 CPU.
Anyone in this forum thread got any clue how or where I can begin doing that?
Any advice in the right direction is appreciated.
Thanks!

Well I have a h5500 and I can stick in a vga card (about $120 incl ir remote) and that gives me RCA as well as svideo outputs upto 1024x768. There are both cf cards (large supply) and pccards (I have the dual pccard adapter for my 5500 along with extra battery pack).
google around for a "pocket pc" "vga card" you will find many. But you need to get the "expansion sleeve" to make it work as the 5500 does not come with any cf/pccard slots by default. There *might* be a SD vga card out there, I havent looked as I have had a 1GB sd card in there for over a year and refuse to remove it

you can make anything a USB host if its a USB client, it just takes a little bit of hardware. More than a null modem however (which is what some people sell). and yes the drivers would have to be there, all in all I dont know that it would be worth it unfortunately :/
The USB host is also supposed to supply the operating voltage for the clients, that is why the wizard charges (I presume others too) that way. If you dont you violate the spec and your devices may not work. This would put a lot of load on the battery and possibly make it run considerably hotter than it needs to.

Thanks for the reply...I have the PC Card Expansion Pack Plus & the HP VGA-out PC Card but dun have the right drivers to get them to work.
Any idea if the bundled driver(meant for WinCE2.1 running on Jornada 600 series H/PC) can be modified to work on the WM2003?
Please advice.

Directly connect Smartphone with External USB Powered HD?

Just wondering if this is possible, and if so, which phones and OS's will support this. More specifically, will the Samsung Nexus S be able to browse filles off of my WD USB3.0 My Passport Essential SE 1TB?
i have seen something done in this regard where that guy used a "fake" microSD to act as one end of a USB cable. the other end was a regular usb port where he hooked a usb thumb drive. you might try to find it and see if it applies on your case.
only o2 flame can do usb otg
but slow in transfer rate as usb 1.1
I have a similar question. Can i somehow send pictures from a USB device to my iPhone? I really need to get those pictures on my phone. Is there a way other than using my pc?

[Q] USB stick plug and play

Hi,
This may be quite a retarded question but here we go anyway:
The Nokia N8 is capable of hosting a USB stick via the medium of a micro USB adapter. i.e. You can plug a USB stick using a micro USB adapter into the N8 and it will mount it as an extra drive displayed in a file explorer.
Is this possible with the Nexus S/Android platform at all?
Presumably drivers would need to be sourced somewhere, and some form of Linux based hack...
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Andy
i'd love to see that happen in the SNS
but from what we know so far, it's not yet possible
however the guys over at SGS, are already cracking in on the code, to hack it and make it work.
as soon as they get that working it should be simple to port it over to SNS, as the phones are practically the same

USB SDHC Card reader

Can anyone recommend a USB SDHC card reader that I can mount on my CM9 touchpad?
I've got the USB Y cable and can see the contents of USB sticks in Astro file manager, also managed to view the pictures on the memory card in my Olympus SLR camera. Unfortunately my other camera Canon compact camera doesn't support mass storage mode, so i want a SDHC USB card reader that i can plug into my touchpad to view the pictures on the memory card.
I've tried a couple of SDHC USB dongles and haven't been able to get them to work, i plug them in and nothing happens, no blinkning LEDs, no files showing in Astro.
So has anyone got this to work, if so can you post a link to the card reader you use?
Thanks!

Make sure you're file manager is set to show all/hidden files.
I use tiny Dane elec readers but any should work.
Make sure they are fat 32 format.

Yes it works
You need correct y and OTG cable and appropriate power source.
I managed to get astro to show the files on an USB Key, but when plugging 2 diff Card readers, and an SD card (fat32), although one of the adapters shows a led, USB storage remains empty under Astro...
any ideas?

I took a punt and bought another SD card reader from amazon and it worked!
In case anyone else is looking for the same thing it's called "Daffodil UCR03 Ultra Slim all-in-1 USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader" on amazon.co.uk. This reads my 8GB SDHC card fine. Cost me about £3.50.
Can't include a link as forum won't let me cos i'm a newbie.
Would this work with WebOS too? And does this need external power source such as a USB hub?
I'm a total noob at this and could use a for-dummies version of how to connect a USB SDHC card reader to the Touchpad (I only recently flashed CM9).
Specifically, I would appreciate if someone could point me towards the exact products I would need in order to set up a USB card reader for my TP. I assume that I will need (1) a USB card reader (such as the Daffodil product mentioned by obo789) and (2) a micro USB adapter of some sort so that I can connect the USB card reader to the TP (is this the "OTG Cable" mentioned)?
If so, is there a particular USB card reader and cable that people recommend?
Once I've obtained the necessary products, would I just D/L Astro File Manager from the App store? Would EZ File Manager also work?
Sorry for the noob questions. I searched this and other forums but could not find a definite answer.
All the details on how to connect are here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582771&highlight=otg
It just needed a 5 second search.
Thank you so much for the link. I kept searching for USB card readers and nothing came up (here and on other online forums). I didn't t think to search for USB OTG compatibility since, until last night, I had no idea what USB OTG meant.
Thank you again for your help and for pointing me in the right direction.
The two I got working were both double capped style, one cap for the SD card and another for the USB plug. One is branded Dane Elec IIRC and the other was a free promo item from Panasonic I got a while ago.
Anyone know where I can get a y cable in the UK?I've tried all sorts of searches on amazon.co.UK and eBay, annoyingly the ones linked from amazon.com won't ship to the UK

Hardware is one thing, I just purchased one of these 4-in-1 adapters linked in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31034220&postcount=35
But your issue may be software/OS related, also discussed in that thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30952816&postcount=34
or better yet: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/33033-otg-usb-insufficient-available-bus-toolthingy/#entry921673
IMHO: you need the USB unmout utility presented there. Try it if your USB flash drives ot USB SD card readers don't work. You might just have a "insufficeint bus power" response, which the utility can correct. I can now read all my camera & camcorder SD cards from a USB interface that failed prior.

That should work and would have a lot less cable clutter than the original set up. With that all you would need is any microUSB charger to power it. There is also one for sale that has a male USB connection for power instead of a female micro USB. With this it would be easier to hook to one of those portable USB chargers that use a full size USB port.

=== Review of Juiced Systems ACA adapter ===
I got this: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Multi-functional-Connection-Kit-Compatible/dp/B006MJZOMW
It appears to be a USB OTG ACA compliant device. Sadly it's for Galaxy Nexus Products and the full ACA compatibility doesn't appear to be implemented in hardware and/or software on the Touchpad with CM9.
1- It does function as OTG host port with the Micro usb from a charger powering the down stream devices. :good:
2- OTG to devices on USB/microSD/SD interfaces works well, but only one at a time for memory volumes (FAT32). Not sure if that's a software shortcoming.
3- Success with a wireless adapter for Logitec mouse/keyboard on USB. :good:
4- Haven't found an NTFS mount solution for Touchpad w/ CM9 nightly 0903.
5- It does connect to the Touchpad, but not with the HP folio case or any case as it's a close fit.
6- The ACA charging of the touchpad while hosting, or otherwise, sadly doesn't work as it was reported to function on SG2.
7- ACA indicator never lights up for charging or host.
Initial Result:
- At $20USD there are fewer cables, but full ACA charging doesn't work, which was my motivation to spend more.
- OTG to devices on USB/microSD/SD interfaces works well, but only one at a time for memory volumes FAT32.
- The physical connection seems a little weak to me. I almost feel like it could break off damaging the adapter, or worst, the micro USB interface.
Further tests:
- I want to check if the Wirless mouse/keyboard on USB can be used with a SD card in either slot.
- I'd also like to test of external HUB with devices further downstream such as self powered HDD and seperate USB Mice, Keyboards (for deskside use).
- Can anyone recommend a ICS compliant USB GPS & app?
Although this setup with: Touchpad, USB battery, Juice adapter, is simple and elegant, its pricy for features I'm not able to use (charging while host). I'm not impressed it will be rugged enough for field use.
Here is my recommended portable solution, which is also cheaper:
- HP Touchpad
- Battery soulution of choice <<< $4.25USD
- OTG host cable & power Y combo: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-H...i9100-S3-i9300-i9220-i9250-XOOM-/140825132367 <<< $6USD
- USB memory / flash drive of choice
(or other USB device that is ICS compatible with HP Touchpad)
:victory:
Will do
Im getting the camera tomorrow and the cables and adapter should arrive soon!
