What's the best compressor? - General Topics

I am looking for a good compressor, better if it's free, to put a lot of auto-extract files (they should auto-extract and auto-execute after the auto-extract, all at the same time) in the XDA.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

the difference really is not that big imho

One of the best compressors is bzip.
But i think in this case it wouldn't work....

Want to donate Prophet!!!

I have a prophet which I have no use for. It is not in the best condition but is in fully working order. Comes from orange but is unlocked and is running one of the old i-mate roms...
Now i can't decide who to donate it to but if any of you have ideas I will gladly accept any suggestions.
I only have the handset as i bought it years ago.
I DO NOT WANT MONEY FOR THIS AS LONG AS IT GOES TO SOMEONE THAT CAN APPRECIATE IT AND WILL NOT TRY TO SELL IT ON TO MAKE MONEY.
if the moderators have any ideas - maybe a competition of some sort
kind regards,
krassen
P.S. - photos can be found at http://81.86.99.181/Prophet/
hope it goes to a good cause
to me! (joke - I don't need 2 prophets)...
give it to crestdelta he needs a new phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=5951314
or to netrunnerat, he's always looking for a cheap prophet for testing

Happily!
I already have a TyTN, but my father is jealous of it and would love getting a PPC!
EDIT: A competition would be a great idea, considering some might not be home 'till late and miss the offer.
EDIT 2: We (me or my father) would happily pay for the shipping
i'm sure some devs/cookers could use it.
i'll gladly take it off your hands & will pay shipping. Need it for the missus, she's been looking for a pda-phone since her palm t5 died.
please pick me!!
ta
No no no pick me!
Heheh.
up to the guy donating it, but i think it would be put to better use going to a developer than 'somebody's missus' ?
Yup, first, try to find a cooker that does need it so that he can release ROM's for it. That is, first, post to the Prophet Upgrading forum. If you don't find anyone or not any cooker / dev needs it, you can also think of me so that I can start publishing hands-on experience Prophet infos too.

Yup, experienced cookers / hackers / devs that would really like to release ROM's and other device-specific stuff for the Prophet should be preferred.

Yeah, some of these developers risk their phone for our sake.. it's only fair that they should be higher priority than those who already have a phone.
Menneisyys and Midget_1990 are good candidates for it.
They always have something good to contribute.

how about gullum or hma4? they're the best prophet rom cookers imho

Except they already have prophets
[+1] Menneisyys all the way. He has shared everything in so depth and loves to share his vast knowledge
So far we have two good candidates...
Menneisyys
Midget_1990
i wanted to get a few more good names and then make a poll and see...whoever wins it will get the device...

Let Midget_1990 have it if he plans to release cooked ROM's for it - after all, ROM's are more important for the general public than mere device-specific tricks & compatibility infos / reports I'd publish.
i'm not a cooker
I don't make roms
I don't really know what the Prophet is
I already have an Orbit
But I WILL swap you it for half a carrot, a turnip and a bag of frozen garden peas (although you will have to organize your own freezer van to ensure they arrive to you in a still frozen form..)
Sorry - its the wine talking.......I'll go away now......
I would be glad to get that prophet because I need to have a working phone during daytime for my work.... so I can only flash at might because I can't miss any calls from customers .... I get verry litle sleep because I have to do all my coocking and flashing at late hours
there is the best candidate ^^
(rom's are no problem btw )

Samsung Omnia and Cab files

Hi all..
currently, i am using Samsung i900 Omnia which is running WM 6.1. I downloaded some cab files to my phone. But i cannot see those cab files i have downloaded to my phone.
How can i solve that problem? I want to install some cab files in my phone.
thanks
While I am unable to answer your question, I do have one for you. Where did you get your Omnia? I'm in the US and am looking to buy one. Thanks, and good luck finding the cab files you downloaded!
well kenosis,
it just depends on where you placed your cab files.
if u used activesync, then u could simply use explorer to drag and drop you cab file onto the varios folder on the phone.
there are basically 3 locations you can place your CAB files.
1. my device - (EEPROM/flash)??. this is where my documents and most other folder are located. limited memory space, so use wisely.
2. my storage - 8/16 GB internal flash memory. plenty of spave to play around with. good idea to install stuffs here.
3. storage card - microSD card. use as u like.
hope this helps.
... and halorin, i believe for now it is only available in singapore. so far i'm pretty satisfied with my omnia.
www.ebay.com.sg (it's in English and a lot of people will deliver). Don't want to teach you to suck eggs but look out as there are a few selling SG$1000 phones with single digit seller ratings.
You can also try www.whymobile.com (another SG site) <-- proper online etailer.
BE VERY CAREFULL WITH EBAY USA <-- had about 5 or so on it
I found 2 yesterday that asked people to email them at the bottom of the advert. They then explain that they are changing there paypal account and that because of this they need you to use the "Ebay Protection Plan" system. This involves them sending you an email from checkoutsupport.com (which doesn't have a www.) asking you to forward the money to a Western Union Agent......
Suspect? I thought so! Also, to boot, when I challenged the guy via email he got VERY stroppy. So I reported them. No sooned I had reported these two adds, I then found a third identical advert .....
Finaly, you can also pre-order on Expansys. Should be available any day now.

Correct, its attached bia a bit of string.
Omnia/SE Xperia request
XDA given it is an htc only website wont open its doors to foreign brands. This is a problem because the new prolific phones will be from samsung and sony ericson. We should email the admins and re request some progress be made to accommodate those who have an omnia and future experia owners. The samsung Omnia request already got shut down by a mod. Please email your local admin and mod about this so that we all can mutually benefit by this
There IS a thread for the x1! It's in the "Other HTC Manufacture" section. As far as the Omnia, well..., it's not made by HTC. (Raphael is up,also. Thanks)

well is the x1 made by htc?
I would guess so, cause it's in the "other HTC manufacture" section.
double post
It was a rhetorical question doggy, Its a Sony Ericson phone. I just dont understand why some mods and admins are opposed tot he omnia if they have a SE Xperia forum.
You don't understand, I'm pretty sure HTC IS making the x1 for SE. I'm sure I read that somewhere. HTC is not making the Omnia. That's the difference
Ohh thats right I read that a long time ago, That was in the february articles. I havn't seen or heard anything else on that matter since then. But yeah, you are right my apologies.
No problem. Now, if only HTC and SE gets it all together...

Got a new WM after a few years, what's changed? Please get me up to speed!

Hi Guys n Girls,
Well I've been a member since '05 but haven't really played with WM's since the Magicians and Alpines. I've had a TyTn but didnt like it and didnt really play with it and then lost an XDA Orbit on the first night down the pub with it. I've been using an N95 lately.
I've just got myself a Polaris and it looks great! I used to love modding my other WM's but it's been a while and I was just wondering what's changed and what's new. I've had a bit of a read but just need some advice on what software to buy and what steps to take.
So here's a few questions I have:
What's the best media player?
I will listen to a lot of music and watch films while on the go. I used to use TcpMP I think. I need one that supports a lot of codecs and don't really wanna use more than one.
What's the best keyboard software?
I had SPB full screen keyboard and it was a lifesaver. Is this the best? I like the zoom fuction on the ipod keyboard.
Is SPB pocket plus still a must?
I felt this package covered bits left out by MS (such as the real 'x' close button etc.) Is it still recomended or are there other ways around things nowadays.
How do I get this touch flow stuff? It looks cool - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=y78EB0rahQA
I love the way things are more fingertip oriented. I think Apple innovated this.
Is there still a program to design themes?
Or where can I get cool themes? I like the dark styles and windows 7 looks nice.
Is ROM flashing still risky?
I've got the o2 branded ROM at the moment. I used to love trying the community's ROMS but I've just started a family and I'm real skint. I bought my Polaris PAYG and really can't afford to brick it. Mind you cooking ROMs was half the fun!
The best PDF reader?
I read a lot of PDF's and remember never finding one up to standard. Ideally it will be fullscreen with no need to scroll along the lines.
What else do you guys recommend I do to get the best out of my HTC device?
I've forgotten loads and feel like a noob again and just need some advice about what you guys consider 'must have steps'. I remember things such as installing the widdicomm BT stack as the MS one is crap. I use bluetooth stereo headphones (motorola S9s) for music.
Hope you guys have some pointers for me and I'm looking forward to playing again!
I'm off to the read the Polaris Wiki
Thanks,
Gareth
p.s. Oh by the way it's great to see this community has gone from strength to strength. It really has grown! It seems to be the HQ of the WM world now. Congrats!

You might want to read my roundups - they give you a definite answer to some of your q's (multimedia, Spb Pocket Plus when it comes to the IEM plug-in, theme management with the latest tools etc.)
Thanks,
I've just bee reading your sticky on browsers and I'm gonna take your advice and use opera mobile and flash package, i'm downloading the cabs from RS now.
I'll have a look for more of your writeups.
Thanks

Not really true - at least not yet. (Albeit, highly possible, given that at least game development for WinMo has almost entirely ceased in the last half a year....)
It's only at some categories that iPhone is MUCH better than WinMo (with much more SW titles); the most important being games.

Replacing my Universal...

Hello there, I'm planning to replace my HTC Universal after great 3 years of working! and I'm still pleased with it to be honest!
My new PPC should has a keyboard, so my question is simple! is the HTC Raphael the good choice to go with?
I know there is the SE X1 as another choice, but I think I liked the HTC more
What do you think?
so guyz...no replys at all?
I really like my Raphael and as far as i worked with it, i had no problems and would recommend it.
There are (of course) some bugs, but they can be fixed with progs out of this forum. So if u are not afraid of spending some time in setting up ur raphael this could be ur new favourite.
The keyboard is pretty good (for my opinion), the buttons are small, but i don't have a problem hitting the right one, even though i got thicker fingers.
If u have some specific questions just ask, i'll see if i can answer.
hi there
having used the universal and then using a hermes as a day-to-day device and now the raphael i can only say that im glad i bought one!
the size of the device is simply astonishing for what has been crammed into it
what do you primarily use your device for?
the universal is a well seasoned device with much support and it appears the raphael is heading that way too!
Thanx guyz,
No problem at all with spending time fixing bugz cause really I like these stuff and I enjoy searching and fixing...that's what kept me from replacing my Universal
good to hear that about the keyboard, cause I really need it and I think by time I should be used to it...
yup, the size is a great thing compared to the huge universal for sure I'm now a medical resident...so I will use it to have some books around me all the time beside its internet & phone cababilities...
there is nothin specific now in my mind to ask, but I got a positive impression in general and I think I'm gonna buy it soon
I'll get back to you!

Opinion needed

Hi,
I've been reading through all the information on the Universal and the various available ROMs.
I'm really impressed with the huge range of stuff available, but also not really sure which to choose.
I'm using a 64MB G3 Universal (UK, originally Vodafone, now on T-Mobile)
Just wondering whether anybody would be able to point me towards a really rock solid build? Some additional functionality over original WM5 would be nice, but reliability is king.
As I say, I've read through the lists etc (and got a bit of lost with all the variety), but far more valuable is a recommendation from somebody who has used them and knows which is least likely to crash.
Thanks in advance!
Tom.
