Which xda to get? - General Questions and Answers

I have a requirement for a PDA which is connected to the internet and can connect to our business server.
I think that the XDA is the right one but want your opinions based on the following:
We will be using about 30mb of data each month, which network is cheapest for this and also voice calls?
Any ideas?

If you are in the UK I suggest that you speak with O2 Business Sales as they have done some good deals on handset price if you have high data usage.
I do not have any specific figures but it should be worth talking to them.

In the US, (a) you can't get the XDA II from a Carrier so I guess around here we'd recommend the XDA, and (b) T-Mobile will give you unlimited GPRS for $20 when you have a voice plan, $29 without. The $29 plan includes voice, but it's pay-as-you-go with no package minutes.

Best prepaid data plan in USA?

Hi all,
I'll be travelling to the US on business for one month, and I will be needing a sim card to put into my Tytn (HTC Hermes, quad band 3g). Does anyone know what's the best prepaid or one-month plan I can get that will give me unlimited data? I would really like to try out some of the broadband features of my wm6 phone (only edge in China, no 3g) so a plan that offered unlimited data on a high-speed network would be ideal. I'll be travelling to several states and many cities, so nationwide network is a must.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction, thanks!!!
i dont think there are any prepaid data plans in US, not that i heard of, only pre-paid voice/txt plans.
Hi, just in case anyone else asks this question, I was able to start an ATT Pick Your Plan prepaid account and then add the unlimited MediaNet for an extra $20. Medianet does give ma full www access. THe first couple of people I talked to said that i could not do this with an overseas credit card, was i able to use my bank of china card with no problem eventually. Also make sure that they add the medianet at the same time they open the account otherwise you will have to wait for 1 month to add the data. Also, don't tell them you have a PDA phone or they will charge you $40 for the exact same data plan.
Quality wise I am very pleased with the service, speeds are very fast and Google mobile maps is using GPRS to position me on a map with astounding accuracy...who needs GPS! Anyway, thanks for the help!
Hi,
Sorry for reopening this old thread, but I will be going to CA,USA in a while to and am used to having Mobile internet everywhere on my Touch Pro (Raph100) and from time to time tethering it to my laptop.
How did you go about getting the ATT sim card?
All suggestions are welcome off course.
PS:If I better start a new thread, let me know

AT&T and Verizon have prepaid data plans. Here is what AT&T offers on their prepaid data plans:
Daily – $15 for 75MB (20 cents a MB)
Weekly – $30 for 250MB (12 cents a MB)
Monthly – $50 for 500MB (10 cents a MB)
US carriers are still gouging. When I was in Ireland I got an O2 SIM card and they only charged 2 cents per MB.

Am I looking in the wrong place?
At http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...cell-phone-plans.jsp?wtSlotClick=1-004EHW-0-1 I only see:
0.01$/kB
or with 75$ charge, 200MB
or 19.99$ for a 100MB pack
or 4.99$ (!) for 1MB
Just FYI, here in Belgium (Mobile Vikings), I get for one recharge of 15Euro each month:
-1000SMS
-2Gig Data (albeit EDGE most of the time)
-0.24Euro per minute
Sadly, roaming in the US, I would be charged 3.5Euro/MB....
I think T-Mobile may have the best option going now

$1.49 for 24 hours of unlimited mobile web access. I don't know exactly what "mobile web" means or if it's limited functionality...
T-mobile is pretty good. You get t-zones for free (which is basically m.yahoo and m.abc), and then you get 200 MB of data per day for $1.49. My connections are slow (I use it maybe once a week), but that's probably due to my phone (ATT fuze) not having the right bands for 3G connections.

Australia, can you recomend mobile provider data package for Touch Pro?

Hi,
I am moving to Melbourne this Monday and need to get a new SIM and number. Which mobile operator has the best deals on data packages? (Preferably unlimited)
And which company is a good broadband/ISDN Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Melbourne? What are the speeds I can expect?
On a budget here... no company paying for me or anything so...
Thanks,

Hi VeenK, I don't know where you're coming from but you might get bit of a shock with our telecommunication costs. Our incumbent telco is unfortunately a rip off and this flows down thru other providers I would suggest looking at Vodaphone, 3, Optus and then of course the rip off merchant Telstra, in that order of bang for buck. Unlimited is unheard of here.

Once again, as above, other countries have a lot better value for money because of our monopolistic incumbent telco (Telstra).
I personally use and recommend "Internode" www.internode.on.net.
Once you know the address or phone number of where you are going to live start here: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ (Whirlpool is the broadband equivalent of what XDA is to PDA's )
PM me if you need any help.
Cheers TZB
Oh, and if you hadn't already guessed, I don't like Telstra lol (either does most of Australia except their shareholders).

Adding to that, cringepool will give you an idea of what's good for both mobile and fixed data services (you need to filter through the bunch of 14 year old know it alls)
Unlimited data plans as mentioned simply don't exist for mobile or fixed services. I guess it kind of makes sense that it's expensive given there is only 20 million of us on one of the largest countries in the world.
Enjoy your time in our fantastic (and best) city
I ended up with Optus, I only get 1gig per month but I don't use that much.
As mentioned there's no such thing as unlimited data packages unless you have a Blackbery or a Hiptop(Sidekick).
For about $80 a month I get $300 in calls, unlimited sms/mms, 1 gig of data. That's on a month-month plan so no contract involved.
You need to know the address of where you'll be staying to confirm if you'll get coverage.

What phones qualify for $10 T-Mobile Unlimited Web? or Carrier Alternatives?

I just got some crap from T-Mobile about how I cannot use a HD2 or a Nexus one with T-Mobile without upgrading my plan from the $9.99 unlimited to the $29.99 unlimited even though I bought the phone off contract. It's a T-Mobile branded US version so I'm wondering what kind of guidelines they have? The rep said that all smartphones have to be upgraded to $29.99 but I've been using my iPhone on the $6.99 T-Zones and just recently upgraded to $9.99 because T-Mobile "no longer offers it to iPhones", says the customer support. My sister runs the Nokia Neuron and I've tried it with a Touch Diamond and both iPhone 2G and 3G and those are smartphones right? I believe the Shadow and Dash use the same data plan?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out what kind of smartphone I can use? And how do they know what phone I'm using?
What alternatives do I have for a cheap unlimited data plan from a different carrier? MetroPCS and Boost seems awesome for offering a $50 unlimited voice, text, and web, but they're only CDMA.
it seems that if you are using a tmobile branded phone, then they'll tag you if you are not using the right data plan. for unbranded smartphones, they seem not to look too deeply into what kindof phone you are using, thus many people use their unbranded smartphone with the $10 data plan. the nuron is not considered a smartphone.

No, that's not how it works at T-Mobile.
If you want to use your HD2 on the $10 web plan you must change your apn to internet2.voicestream.com
Also, there is a new company that recently came out (a la MetroPCS/Boost) called SIMple Mobile (http://www.mysimplemobile.com/), which is a no-contract, unlimited kind of deal but GSM. The poster above me is right though. If your internet is set up to go via web2go, they will charge you the $29.99.

They are pretty cheap, but I believe that for $60 you can just go with T-Mobile and get 500 minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited data and be able to use any of the T-Mobile smartphones. Or, do as I did and signup for the $39.99 plan with Unlimited Texting + 500 minutes then for $10 add unlimited web separately for a total of $49.99/month. I'm using a Touch Pro2 with this plan without any problems.
With simple mobile can you use any unlocked GSM phone?
i neglected this thread for a while and i just found it. anyway, i did try internet2.voicestream.com but it was blocked (it just wouldnt connect to the internet, opera shows "page not found" type of thing). same thing with wap.voicestream.com. it wasn't running a stock rom either.
the folks at tmobile are full of it,I have an HD2 and have the 15.00 200meg data plan, they just promote the larger plan and you have to ask for something diff

Hey suicide - so I have been thinking about going this route with my phone. It would save me about 100$ a month, but I haven't because I have had varying answers when looking for whether or not web is unlimited or whether it will work. Do you have any insight here to clarify on the unlimited web?

Still sounds nifty
always gotta read the fine print
7. STRAIGHT TALK UNLIMITED PLANS CANNOT BE USED FOR: (1) access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or (2) any applications that tether your device to a laptop or personal computer other than for the use of Wireless Sync. I
for unlimited talk and text it's a good deal but their definition of "unlimited data" is useless
T-Mobile pre paid $50 unlimited plan
11. * Data Plans and Other Features. You will be charged for data usage on a pay per use basis unless you are required to maintain a data plan (“Data Plan”) as part of your Service, or as otherwise provided by your Rate Plan or prepaid data pass. Permissible and Prohibited Uses: Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your Device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, using your Device as a modem or tethering your Device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted.
AT&T Go Phone $50 unlimited plan
**Smartphone users: You may use your smartphone on all GoPhone plans. A data package is required to use any data services on your device. Pay-per-use data is not available on smartphones.

$5 for 10 MB
$15 for 100 MB
$25 for 500 MB
basically $75 bucks a month
Do you use this?
I am gonna do a little more research and see which would be better, ST or T-Mobile. I guess ST is atnt for pre-paid? If t mobiles allows data (web surfing) I definitely would be interested in that a little more. That thread I linked mentioned having to drop 200$ on a new Nokia. That hurts there.

no Im stuck in a AT&T contract, I pay about 90 bucks a month for unlimited talk/text and 250mb of data..... majority of my data I use is wifi thats why i went with the smaller data package
seems like out of the three if you want the data T-Mobile would be the way...
as far as dropping 200 bucks on a nokia I have no clue Im pretty sure you can find someone selling a sim card if that's the case

[Q] Best hotspot with prepay or pay per use?

I have t-mobile and it is great...as long as I'm near a big city. When I travel, in between big cities, I may as well toss this phone out onto the street as far as data service goes. I'm looking for information on what the best hotspot to get is.
Requirements:
- Not a post-pay monthly charge. There may be months I don't use it. Should be able to pay only when I want to use it. Pay by the block of bandwidth or pay by the day.
- Coverage almost everywhere. This probably limits things to Sprint, AT&T and Verizon. I hope there are other small carriers that piggyback on one of those networks that offer a good deal?
So far the best deal I have found is this Walmart "Internet on the Go" that uses the Sprint network for 3g. You buy a block of data, which never expires, and you use it as you need it. $10 for 500mb, $25 for 1.5 gigs and $45 for 3 gigs.
Has anyone found something better?
Wow thats expensive for the US isn't it? Or these prices are only because its "as you go" type?
Just for general info can you tell me what's the normal prices for a monthly plan with unlimited bandwidth (or is it limited to 3-5gig per month? After which the speed drops dramatically or you pay extra?)
Thanks, just wondering...
