Bluetooth/GPS - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Accessories

Thanks to towa, orinoco,sweeney,JoseF,domloff,blinky99,...
But I still have a problem ...
After the installation of "MyTry2.zip" incl. all reg-mod's i don't receive any data from the gps-module.
The bluetooth-manager recognize my gps correctly in SPP-slavemode, but sometimes it will lost the connection.
In the doggingstation the connection will be lost in 2,5 min.
TomTom224 is proper installed.
But TomTom-gps received no data from holux-gps
After 2,5 min the connection will be lost.
I try it with:
"NMEA 0183v2 Bluetooth" and "BT Serielle Schnittstelle COM7:"
"SIRF Bluetooth" and "BT Serielle Schnittstelle COM7:"
"EMTAC Wireless GPS" and "BT Serielle Schnittstelle COM7:"
"TomTom Wireless GPS" and "BT Serielle Schnittstelle COM7:"
(PPCGPS208 (TomTom) gives a message: "No GPS Engine. Please re-install")
... anyone with an idea?
Thanks ... mtc

Can any one please help me.
I'm trying to get my XDA II working with a bluetooth GPS receiver. The XDA II does bond to the bluetooth GPS receiver. However when statring TOMTOM it does not work. I have tried to all the setting and com ports without sucess.
I have been informed that there is currently a bug which the manufacturer is working on.
Could some one please help me.

To save me 2 (or more hours) which value was wrong?
Thx

I was told that O2 solved XDA II Bluetooth SPP problem for GPS, source disclosed the Bluetooth GPS tested is EMTAC CRUX II / BTGPS unit.
Hope they will posted the upgrade soon, somewhere.

In the XDA section of MY-XDA.com:
"Upgrade for the Xda II will be available soon."
Let's hope it's very soon.

Hi Surur,
... sorry, but i lost this damned piece of paper with the correct value on it.
But ... i remember the wrong value is in HKLM\Software\Widcomm so
i backup my actual registry and reinstall my complete "old" registry entries including the wrong value.
After that i delete the whole entry in HKLM\Software\Widcomm and import again the "widcomm.reg" (MyTry2.zip). --> it's working!!
So if you have the same problem like me, your problem may be solved in
this way.

XDA II TomTom 2.24 and Holux GR 230 Bluetooth GPS -PLS HELP
I have an XDA II and I am unable to use TomTom 2.24 with my Holux GR 230 Bluetooth GPS. I have already done the following:
Upgraded to TomTom GPS 2.09
Installed the Pocket Bluetooth Tools (and created the Bluetooth com port)
Tried various settings in TomTom GPS as there is not a listing for Holux GR 230.
It seems as though the GPS will communicate with the XDA II, and shows that it picks up satalite signals. When I start TomTom Navigator, the Blue GPS light on the receiver flashes to show that it is transferring data, but TomTom Navigator states GPS position unreliable.
PLEASE PLEASE can someone out there help me. If there is a solution, please explain in basic terms / step-by-step as I am far from an expert on PDAs.
Thanks to anyone out there that can help.

Have you taken it for a drive? Many gps systems will take ages to get first fix from new and will take even longer if static, go for a drive and see what happens, it is helpful if you click on the gps/status and see how many sats and how many red lines you have.

TOMTOM 5 LOCK UP USING BT GPS

Don't know if anyone else here has tried this workaround at all?
Using the remove programs in settings or activesync, remove Tomtom Bluetooth GPS Support (or whatever it's called).
Instead of setting up TT5 to use "Other Bluetooth GPS", set it up to use "Other Cable NMEA GPS".
Set the GPS Baud rate to 9600 or 19200 (both work fine for me).
Then set the COM port to "Bluetooth Serial Port COM6:" (or whatever your outgoing port number is for your BT GPS device.
The only downside is that you have to turn BT on manually before you start TT5 but it doesn't disconnect BT when it exits.
Used this setting on 3 different roads which lately caused me no end of lock-ups and not once has it happened. I think the problem is with Tomtoms bluetooth support drivers, constant problems with them since TT3.
I've only used this for 3 days and 400 miles but everything seems to be fine up to now, including traffic...........we'll see.
TT5
Did your TT5 load onto the XDA with no problems?
I have an XDA IIi and it loaded on no problems at all.
I have an XDA IIi and it loaded on no problems at all.
Great suggestion. I was getting really fed-up with TT5 and about to give up on it. Just back from France/Switzerland where it kept freezing, useless.
Simply uninstalled the TT GPS Support as suggested and used the existing BT Partnership with the TT Receiver and hey presto ... TT running smoothly again, shame I'm back in the UK on roads I know!
Does not work for me. But well worth a try.
This is doing my head in now £200 worth of TomTom software and dongle and unusable with the phone on!
arh help please
I have a problem with my XDA11 whilst trying to upgrade my navigator 3 software to navigator 5......
After I load the main program upgrade and then try to install the map disc one my pc ( desk top XP Profesional os ) it come up with tempory folder full, does'nt say if it it the pc or the xda11.
I have gone into all the temp folders on the pc and emptied them and it had not resolved the problem and I cant find any in the search function on the XDA
Any ideas??
Its a genuine copy of the Tom Tom software as well and there are no contact details on there sites including e-mail links
Regards Lee
there are known issues with Bluetooth device support using TomTom5, i was advised to use the 'Other Cable NMEA GPS' option when connecting a non TomTom bluetooth GPS unit.
also, i connected at the baud rate recommended by the manufacturer which i think was 9600, this worked fine without removing any parts of the software but meant manual switch off of Bluetooth in my MDA after use.
in addition to this, the Bluetooth connection issues with non TomTom GPS units should be resolved in the 5.10 upgrade, just installed it and re-paired an MDA3 to the Globalsat GPS receiver...it now auto switches off Bluetooth after use and the connection can be made using 'Other Bluetooth Receiver'.
another bonus of the 5.10 update is the keyboard shows on the display without having to use the hardware keyboard on the MDA...lovely.

Thanks for the link dont know how I missed that....
Only problem now is when I tap Start etc there is no Run command to enter the %......% command line
I tried the search in explorer option with no results any ideas?
Sorry I'm not the brightest lamp on the planet
you are tapping Start on your PC right?
maybe the 'Run' command has been disabled or does not appear in your Start menu because it's been disabled.
are you the Administrator of your PC? are you running XP?
you may have to go into 'Control Panel', 'Taskbar and Start Menu', Start Menu tab and choose 'Classic Start menu'
trying to cover as many bases here so you can make some headway without too much back an forth as i'm signing off now....if you can get to the 'Run' command on your PC then you'll be able to solve the problem and proceed with the fix from the TomTom site.
good luck.
I have had so much trouble with satnav on pda's, especially with bluetooth that although I have xda 1 with wired gps and spv M1000 with bluetooth gps I have just boght a Mitac Mio 269 dedicated gps system. It has a 2.5 gb hard drive, 500 megs for mp3, the whole of europe, which is millions of miles, preinstalled on the system. Comes with remote and different mounts and has sd card expansion. Obviously it isnt any good for phone calls or word processing etc but it gives me peace of mind when travelling as I have zero sense of direction and very little patience. I still leave my other gps in the car though, as a backup.

Crusin-thru' I can see why you have gone your route its a lot less trouble I just use mine now as a back up phone because I spend a lot of time away from home and just simply use a Nokia 6680 on 3G.....
Also since I stopped using the XDA11 as a phone the pda doesn't keep resetting itself every ten minutes like it did!!

it happens to the best of us...had to think about it myself, instructions on the TomTom site could have been more specific saving many people a lot of time...but you dont always realise this until you have to follow the instructions yourself....glad you got it sorted now.

Bluetooth GPS on HTC Mteor and TomTom

I've tried everything that I could find on the net but nothing helps... Maybe someone here have a solution for this problem.
I have installed TT on my Mteor and it (seams to) work fine. I have successfully paired my Mteor with a bluetooth GPS receiver (Holux GR230). But TomTom is not connecting to the receiver and sends a message 'GPS device not present'.
So... anyone? Some tips? Something that solves this problem?
Thanks!
Have you set an outgoing com port in the Bluetooth manager? - this is the extra step needed to get the serial port profile selected when using WM2005 devices.
In TomTom on the GPS status page what is the yellow / blue disk doing (top right of the screen) if its spinning it is communicating, if stationary you have a setting wrong. If it is spinning take it all outside and wait for upto 20 mins for the GPS receiver to achieve a first fix - after that it should be much faster - Mike
Which outgoing port number should I use?
One that's free to use, then select that port in tomtom.

BT GPS COM port not showing in TomTom

Have just installed WM6 (JW 2.02.02 WWE) and everything appears to be fine except for the BT com port in TomTom Nav5. Have paired the BT GPS, set the outgoing port (COM0) but it doesn't appear in the list of ports available in TomTom.
Is this a known issue or have I got to set something else? Have also tried the External GPS manager in 'Settings' but that port doesn't show either.

I've had the same problem.
What I've done about this, is I've added a Serial port profile for the GPS device. Then went into TomTom and the port was in the list. This port has worked fine.
Tried setting External GPS in the Settings/Connections, to share it, well - TOUGH, does not work.
So I have a working TomTom and I gave up for now about the sharing stuff...
Try setting port 8.
I'm not interested in sharing it (at the moment).
Can you explain what you mean by 'added a serial port profile'?
I've set up an outgoing com port in settings > bluetooth > COM ports but it's not seen by TomTom

I must have tried all the ports that were available but none of them show. All I get is the standard TomTom list: -
QCT Data Interface
Serial Cable on COM1
COM7
RIL on COM6
Infrared Port
Ir on COM3
and of course non of those work either.

Exactly where you wrote it, in COM ports.
Then I've selected "Other Bluetooth GPS receiver" as receiver type in TomTom 6, and here's what I have:
COM5:
QCT Data Interface
Serial Cable on COM1:
COM7:
RIL on COM6:
Infrared Port
Ir on COM3:
COM4:
COM5 is my attempt to share GPS which is failing so far, so disregard it for here (but I'll try COM8 later). COM4 is the Outgoing Bluetooth port and that's the one I selected.
I must admit that I honestly don't understand why this setup works for me. I expected to put Incoming port number (a common for all devices) there, but obviously didn't have it.
Hmmm, that's strange. What you have is exactly what I used to get in WM5 but it doesn't seem to work in WM6? I'm also on TT5 so that may be an issue?
From what I can see, the 'QTC Data Interface' is the GPS sharing port and is actually COM9, installed by the OS. But it doesn't work!
Frustrating............!
I'm also getting tons of memory leak by the looks of it.
SORTED!
Feel a bit stoopid. Checked the version of TT5 and it showed 5.0. Upgraded to 5.21 (which is what I thought I installed) and bingo! Com port shows and works.
Thanks to all who made suggestions.

Man, my TomTom is version 6.010.
Just in case, it's available.
put in External GPS the program port on 8.
then you will see com 8 in TomTom.
connect it in TomTom and after that change the program port back to none and hardware port on 8.
problem solved.
I've had this problem on a Mini S, Exec, Vario II.
Some times just removing TomTom and re-installing it seems to work. On several occasions the correct COM port shows up in TomTom. I honestly don't know why. It seems a bit random.

I know, but the old TT5 maps won't work with 6 and I've got quite a few that don't come with the Europe disk.
solution to tt gps connection problems
hi everyone with this problem,
no matter what your setup is vario, xda, dell, tt5 or tt6, tomtom gps or other GPS try this method (it does bloody work) :
STEP 1 : INSTALL TOMTOM5 OR TT6
You do this by copying the CAB files from the CDROM using JasJar or using SD card o any other way
STEP 2 : UPGRADE (THIS IS NOT ESSENTIAL, ONLY DO IT IF YOU HAVE A NON-HOKY COPY OF TT)
http://www.htcclub.net/storage/ppcupd510.rar
or just overwrite patched version of main executable file over original
also having this install on some vario 2 may also help BTHTools1100.
STEP 3 : ACTIVATE THE GPS CONTROL PANEL
this is hidden option but if you use this wisely you will take control over your GPS but in many cases this is reson why tt sometimes works sometimes doesn't.
Fire up a registry editor (eg http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml )
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MASCHINE\ControlPanel\GPS Settings
Delete the DWORD marked "hide"
Add a DWORD called "Group" and give it the value of "2" (dec)
The GPS panel will now show up in your connection settings.
STEP 4 : INSTALL TOMTOM
1. Establish a bond with your GPS and select the checkbox for serial access.
2. In BT, select the OUTGOING port to 8. (optional: make it non secure if available)
3. In the GPS control panel, select the GPS program to 0 and make sure that the hardware one, is set to None, also you should pay attention to 3 tab and allow windows to manage it - for now, you don't really want Bill managing things as it is recipe for disaster.
4. Start TT and the GPS settings, select another bluetooth GPS, and you will see COM 0 free. Select COM 0 and close TT5. (if you don't get the port go back one step and check 3 tab)
5. At the GPS control panel again, now select COM 8 (before we set it up at 0).
6. At BT: select OUTGOING port to 0.
7. Back again to GPS control panel and select NONE.(and now is the right time untick 3 tab option and stop auto managing)
8. Finally start TT and it should connect automatically. Wait for a couple of seconds and click the GPS settings and you should see it has connected.
Congratulations
well, in case something didn't go well start from scratch - reset your software restore your registry and reinstall as much as you can get back to factory defaults using hard reset and etc.
I know this is is in bits available elsewhere but this is more complete and little bit more up to date, but there is still hundreds of people looking for this.
THE SUMMARY
I've spent many many days looking for solutions, registry and web and all sort of tools to solve this, but this method works the treat - and it does make perfect sense - I suspect the reason why this is such a problem is timeout. windows is not a good platform - and it is locked by ms and all sorts of legacy issues. Obvious reason is tt doesn't load quickly enough and and detecting correct port seem to an issue so if you follow instruction you will see that sulotion is guiding your software to speak with 3party hardware having windows in the middle
good luck
Paulius - Excellent instructions and they work just great.
However....For me it only works one time. By that I mean after I turn everything off and then want to use it another time - it again cannot see the GPS device - and I have to do all of the above again.
Do you know why the settings are not retained? Note; I have unticked the the stop auto managing option already.
Hope you can assist.
Paulius - Excellent instructions and they worked fine but only the first time unfortunately for me.
i.e the next time I want to use tomtom - i have to go through all of the above again as it cannot find the GPS again.
Have you come across this before. Note: I have done exactly everything you have instructed above

I had the same problem.
Luckily I had a backup of my TomTom installation.
It all comes up to the navigator.cfg file inside the Navigator folder. I copied the old one over and did not enter TomTom's GPS Setup menu anymore.
All I did after flashing was to just pair my BT GPS receiver and start TomTom. One needs to wait 5 seconds or so after the main screen opens, until the GPS is found. Do not try to select the receiver in the settings menu!
This happend on both my devices (BA and UNIVERSAL) after installing a WM6 firmware WITH the GPS Manager in the Settings.
Cheers,
vma
Thanks VMA - I understand.
Did you setup an outgoing port though in Bluetooth?
reply to nsm
hi nsm, sorry it took this long to respond, I didn't know the solution to your problem.
However, after few gliches with my pda's I think I can add to the list of thing to go wrong.
First is WM itself sometimes causes problems - so before you do anything else turn it of and on again - it did happen to me in the middle of london and I come from Lithuania well, it can be good fun navigating through canary warf without gps - aim for tall buildings :-D or away from them.
Second is once you followed my original instruction do not go back to gps settings menu, because after this you will have to start again from begining.
Third - is do allow minute or few for gps to lock onto satellites - especially if you are in doors or between buildings. Once in Crete it was quite hard to find satellite signal because of a mountains and I had clear sky view to one direction - but as you drive especially bigger cars, metal body will block signal.
Fullproof recipe is to have two units, if possible for one of them use bluetooth separate gps module as this will allow you to place both gps unit and pda screen in ideal locations for satellite signal and driver.
Fourth - this is boring and can take a lot of time, but may resolve lots of weird issues. Follow my instructions and then you set your tomtom to use data transfer baud rate 4800, 9600 and etc do try all the options - from low to high rate, this means that every time you'll have to start again instructions from beginning. TT6 on some of my pda's prefers 56700, tt5 - 4800 and so on. give this some time explore all the settings.
And finally if you have stability issues check your pda memory limits - try not to push it to 90%+ on unit or memory car, best is to leave plenty on both, this may cause settings not to be saved and all sorts of bugs.
the practical advice is to keep selling and buying pdas till you find one which will do the job for you, Try ebay , but do check descriptions and guides and most important sellers rating! All pda, mda and nokia simbion phones I tried with enough effort will work but many many of them have issues with stability or are difficult to setup.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

Can't change hardware port and baud rate in external gps settings

I found gps settings on athena thread. it was: software port on 8, hardware port on 4 and baud rate 38 400. settings worked perfektly on my touch cruise. The differens was really amazing! It was first time i got fix in the building.
But it worked only 2 days. On the third day when i tried to get fix, tomtom or iGo didn't work at all. Then i checked hardware port og baud rate in external gps settings and saw that hardware port og baud rate settings in external gps were back to "none" and "4 800" - i just could not change hardware port og baud rate settings in extenal gps any more! Software port settings in external gps and software port and baud rate settings in tomtom and iGo still can be changed fine. Any ideas how i can fix it would be very much appreciated.
Try using GPStest.
Gpstest does not allow to change hardware port.

By default the GPS settings are:
Other NMEA
COM4
Baud Rate 4800
With Tomtom as well as with Igo you can set this manually
When i use settings: software port 8, hardware port 4 and baud rate 38 400, Gps works much faster, believe me! The difference is amazing! May be there is some changes in register to keep hardware port on port 4?
You need to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=330235 and read a little bit.
I have this problem too, but it's nothing to do with tomtom as I don't have that software.
GPS settings in Windows Mobile are locked to 4800 since I installed TrackMe. This may be a coincidence, and it may not be. I have uninstalled that software but the problem remains.
It been a while since I did some GPS programming but I specifically remember the NMEA specifiction REQUIRES the reciever to only send/recieve at 4800. setting it to anything else will usually end up the program recieving garbage.
Additionaly Im pretty sure that the hardware port doesn't actually allow you to choose the com port the GPS reciever is actually connected to BUT it tells the GPS intermediate driver what port the reciever is connected to (thus you can't change it if you only use the internal reciever).
Then the GPS intermediate driver emulates a com port (the software port) if a program wants traditional serial access OR the program can directly call the intermediate driver.
Personally I think you were just having a couple of good days reception, remember its not a guaranteed service and it is 40 year old technology now...
Same for Touch Pro: using the hardware port 9, and baud rate 9600 the finding speed increases (it will find satellites 10-20 times faster). But i also cannot change the settings. So, is there any registry value, which we can change?
if you cant change the settings how do you know how do you know the satellite acquisition times are 10-20 times faster ?

I am facing strange problem on newly bought Samsung Omnia i900 phone while running iGO8. When I use it with internal GPS it works well but when I try to change that to use external one it just quits! Strange, isn't it?
I want to use external GPS (which is Royaltek) because it give TMC information also on it. When I click on detect TMC it discovers Royaltek and then immediately iGO quits with no warning.
Anyone seen this problem before? Please suggest something, I bought omnia mainly for IGO8 and TMC combination.
iGO Version 8.0.0.41506 Jun 3 2008.

Use GPS port 2 from the settings and then in Igo8 settings ALSO choose the same port with baud rate 4800. Then it will detect it.Might take 5 minutes to lock the first satellites but after that it works like a charm
It's out there
Look at the expansys site under Igo8.
There is a guy on there who uses Royaltek TMC receiver (probably more now) and I think he will help you

Connecting external GPS/TMC receiver
I have Omnia i900 and a Royaltek GPS/TMC (RTG1001) , also GNS GPS/TMC (GNS5843) . If you want to connect external GPS/TMS device to utilise the TMC information, where it is free, you need first to add or pair it with the Omnia (or other PDA/Smartphone). With mine (as I don't know if others are different) the internal GPS is on Com Port 3. Go to start, settings, External GPS. You will then see that the GPS program port is 3, my hardware tab is set to COM9, the access tab has the manage GPS automatically box ticked. OK.
Now go to Start, Settings, connections. Pick Bluetooth, add your gps device, after turning it on (ensure FM aerial is in, put it by a window ledge or sit outside so that you get some sort of feedback that you are receiving signal). You will be presented with all BT devices in range. Your Royaltek will be seen as BlueGPS******, single tap the device and tap next. Enter passcode as 0000 (GNS is nothing/enter or 0000). On the next screen tap advance and tick the Serial port box, then save. Now, still in the Settings & Bluetooth, go to COM Ports tab, select New Outgoing Port, Select your GPS device you just paired with (BlueGPS****** or GNS for example) then tap next, choose COM2 (if available) and untick secure, then finish.
Now after you start iGO8 (NavNgo8) go to gps settings, go to GPS and untick GPS enabled, then choose Port 2 and Baud rate 57600 (or auto, the faster you can get the better), now tick GPS Enabled. You should see the top of screen display GPS driver is successfully conneted. Good! Now untick GPS Enabled again. Tap back arrow. Select TMC. Select settings, select Protocol Royaltek (or GNS if you have theirs), Port 2 & Baud rate 57600. Tick Start Autodetect. You should, after a short time, see TMC Hardware Detected. Tap okay. Now tick Use Auto-tuner. You will see it scanning like a digital radio tuner (TMC part is now working).
note that if you do not get any coloured scan bar....take out the aerial plug & 'rough it up' a bit to make better connection, even with a little abrasive material.
Now back arrow and tap GPS you will see that it has enabled itself. Back out all the way. If you are in a country that broadcasts free TMC there will be the warning triangle appear (depending on signal and events on-route or all etc). TMC doesn't work in the UK for igo8 but it does for igo8R3 (that is...the the new R3maps)
This seemed to automatically turn on the GPS section too. So the trick is to establish TMC before GPS.
If I'm wrong or made error ....Sorry! Mine working fine in landscape & portrait, with the appropriate editing of the data.
