Question SOLVED: Edit Greyed out APN on Pixel 7 Pro? (No Root) - Google Pixel 7 Pro

UPDATE: FOUND SOLUTION IN 3RD POST BELOW!
So im rooted on my Pixel 7 Pro.
Im experiencing daily occurances where my phone goes into NO SERVICE.
Toggling data on or off doesnt work.
Only restarting the phone works.
Which brings me to this..
I have Visible wireless which is Verizon based.
Problem is I cant edit APN what-so-ever.
Its greyed out. So fine tuning my APN is off the table.
However I do have root and I do have access to my build.prop file (even though FX explorer wont let me mount to write which is another problem).
Does anyone know how to work around this APN block or point me in another forums fix?
Im on Factory Unlocked Pixel 7 Pro Android 13.

Try this app, and enable apn editing. If it lets you after that you'll be able to. But it doesn't work on Verizon, you can add an apn but only edit the name of it.

Thank you TotallyAnxious but I got a working solution that doesnt involve adding modules to Magisk and appears to not require root. I do have Magisk and LSPosed running but this is working on my Visible (Verizon) service.
Ok so Im on a factory unlocked Google Pixel 7 Pro Android 13 (rooted but that doesnt matter and neither does being factory unlocked) with Visible Wireless (Verizon MVNO) and my APN is greyed out. Apparently Visibles carrier update I have for 2023 didnt patch adding apn, they just hid it.
I just downloaded "MIUI Hidden Settings Activity" app in play store by "NetVor - Android Solutions" and opened the "Access Point" shortcut which opens up the hidden by verizon option to add APN and save it! I have my 2nd APN selected right now in settings.
I basically copied everything my carrier APN has except I didnt select "NR" under bearer type which is the 5G connection. It wont let you add "dun" for APN type for tethering/hotspot so I added it in all CAPS as "DUN" and it worked! Tested hotspot and it works great.
Now my phone wont lose service trying to connect to this stupid 5G causing NO SERVICE on my sim.
For many this is how you add APN for troubleshooting.
Important to know: Using this other app called "Network Type Switcher" by "Cracky" in Play Store allows Testing menu which is *#*#4636#*#* on your dialer to "select prefered network type" to remove "NR" (5G) as folks previously have been doing to stick to LTE 4G, however, if your APN bearer allows 5G (NR) then it will try scanning for NR band and when it finds it and cant connect (because of your prefered network type on LTE 4G) it will cause a mismatch and youll lose service showing "NO SERVICE". The only way to fix it is rebooting.
Make sure your Select Prefered Network Type reflects whats in your APN bearer.
In fact as long as you just remove NR (5G) from apn bearer then it wont even scan for it even if your "select prefered network type" allows NR (5G). So no need to change it. Just remove it from your APN bearer and itll stay on 4G LTE.
Removing NR (5G) from apn bearer was my ultimate goal and adding a new apn but If your goal is to just add tethering/hotspot with "DUN" (such as "APN type: default, spul,DUN") then thats all you need to do.
No need to change "select network prefered type".
If you mess up adding a APN and want it deleted just go to settings, network, sims, apn, select the 3 dot menu, reset to default and itll go back to what your carrier set.
I dont think you need root to add APN with this app above. It never prompted for root access and didnt require it. No need to modify build.prop since they just hid the add apn setting.

It's an app, not a module. It actually can work without root as described in the readme.

A: Preliminary steps that were done before leaving the US:
a1 – From Google Play store install the following apps if you do not have them: APN Manager Pro (81 Square), Phone Info ([email protected]), Titanium Backup Pro , ES File Explorer and Open Signal Maps. You may have to pay a few bucks for some of these pro versions, but they are required.
a2 – In Titanium Backup Pro, go to Backup/Restore, find and “long select” APN Manager Pro, and then select “Convert to system app”.
a3 – Open APN Manager Pro, select Insert APN, and input the data needed from your desired service provider (see note 1 below for help). When done, go to APN List and make sure your current APN’s and the new APN’s are both there. What I did was to leave the US with several options for each country I was going to visit already loaded into the APN list so I could be ready for several possible providers. At this point, your phone should still be fully functional in the US with Verizon LTE.
B: When overseas, I did the following steps to go from LTE to GSM:
b1 – Turn off phone, pull out battery and put in micro SIM from your foreign country. DON’T LOSE YOUR VERIZON LTE SIM! Turn phone back on and turn off Wi-Fi.
b2 – Use Phone Info app to change preferred network type "Global" (click on Device Information and scroll down to the first box to change). Some have reported that other choices were needed for their providers, so you may have to experiment.
b3 – Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names and select the correct APN. I believe that only APN’s that your SIM recognizes will show on this list. (If it’s not here, go back to step a3 and enter the needed APN data).
b4 – Reboot phone. You should have the SIM card working for phone and data.
C: To return to Verizon LTE:
c1 – Use Phone Info app to change preferred network to “LTE/CDMA/EvDo” (click on Device Information and scroll down to the first box to change).
c2 – Turn off Wi-Fi, pull battery and put Verizon LTE micro SIM card back in.
c3 – Power up phone (at this point you might be working properly already, and you are good to go!)
c4 – If needed, go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names and select LTE-Verizon Internet (which is my default here in North Carolina).
Notes and Troubleshooting Issues:
1.Below are several sites to check if you do not know the correct information. I cannot guarantee that this information is current. You may only need to enter some of this information to get data working (I did not try phone or MMS use). In some cases it may be as little as just the APN Name to display and the correct APN (sometimes referred to as GPRS APN), while other providers may require the user names or passwords or more for full functionality. Please report your successful requirements in the thread.

2.I highly suggest that you use Open Titanium Backup Pro and backup your phone apps and data. Go to Backup/Restore; then select the check mark in the upper right corner; then select RUN "Backup all user apps and system data"; and then select the green check mark in the upper right corner. Let this run until complete. You can restore any of your apps from here in the future.
3.I highly suggest that people use the Open Signal Maps widget that comes with this app, and install it in a 1x2 format on one of your screens. This shows exactly what is happening as far as provider, signal strength, and type of signal. This is where I could see that I got 3g, 3.5g and 4g service from time to time in Moscow and Helsinki. I keep this on my home page here in the US.
4.When using your phone in the US or overseas with a non-verizon SIM card, you have a constant icon warning in the notification bar referring to a "Non-Verizon SIM". If this bothers you and you want to remove it, the answer is to freeze or delete the app Setup wizard 1.0 (its icon is a red check mark with a magic wand). Using Titanium Backup, freeze or delete Setup wizard 1.0; or if you freeze/delete with AntTek App Manager, it is the second listed Setup wizard and contains 24.00kb. The app contains very little data in the database (three csv files with nothing of interest), and hopefully can be safely frozen. I have no idea why it is in the phone to begin with.
5.I also suggest learning the great features of ES File Explorer. If will allow you to easily get to your all your files (including system and root). Open it and go to menu>settings; then check "up to root", "root explorer", "mount file system" and "backup system app". Now you have full access and control of your phone files. The external card is found at /mnt/extSdCard, while the internal SD card is at /mnt/sdcard. You can set favorites to get to places you want to visit fast, and that is a plus to this file program.
6.Some phones have the option to check the following: Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network (if available)>then the first instance of Network Mode (before Access Point Names), and make sure it says Global mode or another choice that works for your provider (If not, go back to step b2).
7.Some phones have the option to check the following: Go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network (if available)>then the second instance of Network Mode (after Access Point Names), and make sure it says GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode), at least that is what I needed in Europe. Some providers may need other selections and you may have to experiment.
8.There have been reports of problems with the phone app crashing using the prior, more complex method. If this happens, try restoring your "com.android.phone" app with Titanium Backup. I'm still looking for confirmation that this fixes any issues, so please post to the thread if you have this problem and let us know if this fix works, or if it does not.

for the "Non-Verizon SIM" notification ===> it is ok i havent no longer the notification, Thanks
but for the GSM 3G network i followed all previous steps mentioned, i installed all applications requested but when i tryed to add new apn with APN Manager app it makes an error message "problem when creating apn"
i m unable to add new apn
in the APN list, i find 55 APNs all for are installed by default and i cant delete any one of them
i think that i should modify the system application related to that (to the APN) to get ability to add new APN
how can i do it so

Hi
after a week searching and making many tests, i finaly found a solution to get 3G on my Verizon SGS3 in Tunisia for Tunisiana APN
source : s3forums
Before leaving the U.S., you need to complete the following:
Root the phone with stock ROM
Use sprint.recovery.image for clockworkmod (others may work as well)
Load APN Manager app from Google Play
Load HiAPN Global app from Google Play
Load Ghost Commander app from Google Play
Load Dropbox app from Google Play
Load PhoneInfo app from Google Play
Back up APN’s to sd card through HiAPN
Edit “apnlist_backup.xml” found at sdcard>HiDroid_Net>HiAPN using Ghost Commander app (select DB text editor to open) and then edit to include your required APN information.
Use HiAPN to restore APN’s
Use APN Manger to see APN list and check that info for new APN is correct (APN manager cannot do anything else or it will crash)
Use APN Manager to check to make sure that APN for now is still set to LTE-Verizon Internet or EHRPD – Verizon Internet
Once overseas, you need to complete the following:
Turn off phone and pull battery and put in micro SIM from your foreign country (I’m using MTS in Russia, but was prepared for several other providers)
Turn phone back on
Turn off wifi
Use PhoneInfo app to change preferred network type “Global” (click on Device information and scroll down for first box to change).
Open HiAPN and select “Click to Autoset APN’s” or hit “Net” one change at a time until you rotate to the correct APN
Go to airplane mode for a minute (this helps reset the radio)
Take off airplane mode
Go to Settings>More Setting>Mobile Network and make sure that is not grayed out. If not there, try going back to HiAPN and doing the “Net” cycle again.
Check Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names to make sure correct APN is selected. (If not, go back to step 5).
Reboot phone, you should have the cars working.
Once back in the states, complete these steps:
Use Phone Info app to change preferred network to “LTE/CDMA/EvDo”
Pull battery and put Verizon LTE micro SIM card back in
Power up phone
Turn off wi-fi
Open HiAPN and hit “Net” one change at a time until you rotate to VZWINTERNET
Use APN Manager to check to see if it is set to LTE-Verizon Internet or EHRPD – Verizon Internet
Check Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names to make sure correct APN is selected. (If not, go back to step 5).
If for whatever reason these steps fail (Once back in the states), then do the following:
Reset phone to non-rooted stock, Go here for more info.
Do full phone reset,
Re-root
Re-clockworkmod
Restore ROM through recovery mode.

[Q] HowTo DISABLE LTE (AT&T)

I noticed today that in gaining LTE (already on an LTE plan with ATT, was using LTE on my N4 just fine) I lost the ability to DISABLE LTE and (more specifically) use wap.cingular as an APN. I've done reset to defaults, checked settings and compared to my N4, nothing. I can actually disable LTE, but even on forced HSPA+, I can only connect via PHONE, not WAP.CINGULAR APN. This is important as wap.cingular bypasses throttling and also does not count toward the throttle counter. Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I'll have to leave to Tmo which...is an option but a last resort.
SOLVED!
I found an Xposed Framework module called Wedymod. Link http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.wedy.mod
In this module is an option called "Do Not Prefer APN". After selecting this and rebooting, the phone obeys the APN I tell it to use (wap.cingular in this case). I'd love to pick apart this module and figure out how/what it's doing specifically if anyone else has the skills I'd love to see it done. Enjoy guys!

you can go Settings -> More -> Mobile networks -> Preferred Network Type Select 3G
Then under Access point names add a new APN for wap.cingular and name it AT&T 2 or AT&T Bypass Throttle and select and enable it
i dont see why you need an xposed stuff for this..

Actually I spoke too soon, it did NOT solve my problem. Upon further testing (deleting all non-wap.cingular apns) I still can't get a connection unless I add back pta or phone. Can you confirm what plan you're on? I'm on LTE Unlimited as my plan code and I CANNOT connect on wap.cingular over 3G. I can do it over 2g (not on LTE obviously) but the phone will NOT allow me to connect via 3g to wap.cingular. My i9100 has no problem with this.

[Q] Modifying APNs with 4.4.2 (NE1)

Hello,
I've been putting off asking the question as I thought that somebody else had to have gone through this already but I've had poor luck looking through the forum and Google hasn't been able to help.
I'll be traveling to Italy in the near future with my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (Build KOT49H.I535VRUDNE1). I would like to pick up a TIN or WIND SIM while I'm there, primarily for data usage. From what I've read, once I install the 3rd party SIM, I'll need to update the APN settings to get data to work.
Stock, it looks like the APN settings are uneditable. I rooted the phone with towelroot (if only everything were so easy) and then checked the APN settings to see if I could add another network. No dice.
Poking around on the web, it looks like in the past, people have been able to work around this by downloading build prop editor and adding the following two lines:
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
I gave this a shot and was surprised to see the APN menu gone when I went back into my network settings. Through trial and error, I determined that the inclusion of ro.csc.sale_code=LOL changes my Mobile Networks options from:
- Mobile Data
- Global Data Roaming Access
- Roaming
- Signal Strength
- Network Mode
- Access Point Names
- Network Operators
to:
- Mobile Data
- Data Roaming
- Network Mode (GSM is not an option in here)
- System Select
- Dial Up Networking
There is no option to modify APN settings there. Am I missing something silly? Did something change in KitKat 4.4.2 that has caused this approach to "unlocking" the APN settings to become invalid? Is everything really ok and I'll have access to the APN settings when I insert the italian carrier's SIM card?
I'm game for other approaches as well. At one point, I thought I saw an article that talked about setting up a pointer to the APN settings prior to updating the prop file but I haven't been able to relocate that.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Aaron
In the event somebody else is looking for the answer, I got my hands on a TIM sim card today, installed it in the phone and the APN menu reappeared and let me enter a new APN. Looks like the answer as of today for this phone is TowelRoot, SuperSU, BuildProp and install the 3rd party sim.
Take care,
Aaron

US Cellular SM-G920R4 Galaxy S6 APN Data Connection Locked to 3G

I have a US Cellular G920R4, unlocked.
USC has co-opted the data connection. For example, I can add an APN for Verizon and select it, but it doesn't work.
If you set the APN setting to default and remove all APNs, it dispalys a message that states that "APN settings are disabled for the current user profile."
Data is 3G by default.
Also, they've locked the browser such that you can not remove or even change the default home page, which is the USC portal.
How to I eliminate their default setup and restore the APN settings?
I was having a problem with this also and I was able to add a working APN by disabling WiFi first. You'll still see the APN settings disabled error until you add the new APN. You'll then be able to select the radio button next to the APN you added after it has been saved. It worked for me just now so I hope that helps you.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am glad the solution worked for you and, hipefully it will help others. The WiFi settings on my device were disabled. Sonim XP8 w/Android 10 apn issues/root

So for the long post but lots of information up front. I obtained an unlocked Verizon Sonim XP8 with Android 10 installed. It works with a Verizon sim as well as a FirstNet sim. I am trying to use a Visible sim in it. I've used this sim in an iPhone, iPad and Unihertz Atom without any issues as the latter 2 let me add the apn settings. The software on the XP8 is obviously from Verizon who locks the apn settings even though the phone is unlocked. The sim lets me select the Visible 4G network but puts in Verizon's apn settings instead of Visible and won't let me change them. I have tried various programs which fail to change the apn settings. One program let me add an apn but refused to save it saying my "user privileges" would not let me add an apn with the "dun" setting. I tried some one-click root programs (even though I didn't want to) which failed to root the device. There is no available dump for Android 10 to pull a boot.img from to modify. TWRP website shows no Sonim compatiblity and even when downloaded won't run on the phone so I cannot get the boot.img myself. I looked through this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sonim-xp8-root.3851187/ Being a newbie, I think I need to use adb in order to pull the boot.img but am unsure where it is stored and where I am supposed to store the xml files that I create. If I can understand that process better and get the boot.img to root with Magisk, will this even solve my permissions problem with being able to add the apn settings? Is there an alternative or is the only way to solve this to flash the phone back to Android 8 with the stock images off this website to get rid of the Verizon problems? I'd really like to stay with Android 10 if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Josh
Where did you get one with android 10? I have both the Verizon and ATT XP8s stuck on Android 8.1. I have had tickets open with Verizon for 2 months and they swear it is fully up to date with 8.1. It may actually be my APN configuration that is preventing the update.
I was able to get Visible working on my Verizon version by modifying just the apn name in the existing apn. I can't add new APNs on either ATT or VZW XP8s. Perhaps if you follow the other XP8 root thread you will see there is a method for rooting which gives you access to manually add APNs. I'm not sure if it works on Verizon model though...does anybody successfully have XP8 Verizon with Android 10 and root?

I used a friend's Verizon sim card in it and went to System->System updates->Check for new system updates and it upgraded itself to Android 10. What did you modify the apn name to in order to get it to work? I have 4 apn settings I was given for Visible. The apn settings in the phone however leave little room for modification.

Using my Visible SIM on my Verizon device, I have only 1 APN instead of 4. By changing just the APN NAME, (which is all I can change), I am able to get visible data working. No MMS/SMS/ADMIN APNs but full speed data.
My primary sim for this is a Verizon prepaid. Was your friends sim a verizon post-paid account? Also, do you have the appropriate 4 verizon APNs on your phone? Maybe the admin APN is required for the update. Any chance we could swap screenshots of our APN configurations?

The sim was a post-paid account. I don't have it in the phone right now. The only APN that shows up when I put the Visible sim in is named "Verizon" with an APN of "VZWINTERNET" MCC "311" MNC "480" APN type "default, dun, supl" APN protocol "IPv4/IPv6" APN roaming protocol "IPv4" I tried the root method in the thread I listed but when I type the command for the QSaharaServer it tells me the application is not executable even though I followed all the directions so I cannot even get the boot.img downloaded to begin the rooting process.

Just change APN name from VZWINTERNET to VSBLINTERNET.
unfortunately that didn't work for me. not sure if that's an android 10 difference or something else... i do notice that when the phone starts i get a 4GLTE symbol which promptly goes away.

Did the APN name save? If so try the following:
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Select Phone Information
Set Preferred Network type to "WCDMA Only"
Reboot and let it sit for 5 minutes without touching it to update it's settings.
It should automatically change but if not, Do it again and make sure Preferred Network Type is "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (prl)"
This got my VISIBLE sim on the right network along with the APN change.
a lot of the secret codes have gone away with the android 10 update hence the need to root. i am unable to change the network type through the typical menu and the dailing code does not bring anything up, just returns to a blank screen. The network is stuck on "LTE/UMTS/GSM" no matter what I do.
Were you able to root with android 10? I heard it hasnt been done as of yet due to the new android 10 features

Hello, can you backup rom android 10 to zip file, i can not update my xp8 OTA updae normally.
Thanks
So I had to get a ATT sim without service from ebay, stuck it in and instantly had a update i could do which brought me to the last update before android 10. I then had to do a complete reset before it would even say it had another update. That got me to android 10. then doing the time/date trick got me to the current security patch level.
Unfortunately it still blocks the second sim slot.
I appreciate the many work-arounds here and will look at getting a SIM from somewhere if needed, but is there not a more simple download / extract path? The unlocked XP8 I recently got is on 8.1.0 and would really like to get a tad more recent if possible. Many thanks in advance!
P.S. Got unlimited connectivity and a number from Mint, so at least a very functional device... have no need, so haven't tried 2nd SIM slot.
