The allocation of storage between System and 'Other files' has changed after the Mar'23 update.
Before the update, System was occupying 50.40 GB data. It was always this number for almost a year now (since the phone launched).
But after the update that my phone got in the 3rd week of March, this value has increased to 81.94 GB.
I haven't lost storage space. Just that the values allocated between these two categories have changed.
Can anyone confirm this on your device?
SOLUTION
I uninstalled updates to My Files app and restored it to the previous version 14.1.02.10.
This version reports the storage classification.correctly. System now has 50.4 GB as before and the rest goes under 'Other files' as before.
Check out comment #23.
Mine still says 50.30
Mine is 59.30GB.
61.23GB for me

Have you noticed if it changed from before? Or is this what you had before the update too?

I think, based on a very vague memory, that it has slightly increased from when I just got it

Slight change is okay. The issue is how the system has allocated some of the items. In my case, about 30 GB data is reclassified from 'Other files' to System. While I'm not 100% sure, I think these are the .apks files (apps backed up using SAI) that I have in a folder, which is now about 28.5 GB.
Mine shows 61.19

But at the same time "Other files" also occupies 30GB less.
Before:
System 50,40GB
+ Other 63,44GB
» Total 113,84GBAfter:
System 81,94GB
+ Other 34,95GB
» Total 116,89GB
Looks like some files have been moved to a system directory. While only "System" and "Other files" have changed, all others continue to occupy the same space.

My question is if you see a good chunk if files reclassified from 'Other files' to 'System'?

Yes, the issue is only of reclassification of files between these two categories.
I suspect .apks files are now showing under System, instead of 'Other files' that they used to before.

No, APKs are listed in "Apps". Apart from that APKs are no system files and accessible for any user in /data/app/*.

I'm talking of .apks format (split APKs). These are currently not counted under 'Installation files' which includes files ending in .apk (not .apks).
Apps are what you have installed in your device.

It doesn't matter what type of APK. A so called App Bundle (split apk) is nothing more than a signed ZIP archive containing multiple APK files. But at the end you have the app's source and installation file. These files - in case they belong to an installed app on your device - are ALWAYS stored in /data/app or /system/(priv-)app. These directories + all app data = "Apps"

You're missing my point.
I keep backups of installed apps on my device. These backups are taken with SAI and stored in .apks format. The My Files app used to classify them under 'Other files' before the update in March. Now they are (most likely) showing under 'System'. I say 'most likely' because the folder where SAI saves all the backups is now about 28.5 GB.
These are not counted under 'Apps' or 'Installation files'.

Why did you backup 28,5GB of APK files? I guess the most of them are available by Play Store and they would need an update once installed anyway.
What happens if you delete/move some files? Is "System" getting smaller?

I back them up just in case an update breaks some functionality. It is also done so I can access it if the app is pulled out of the market.
So I deleted the folder containing those files that occupied 28.5 GB. But after deleting, I see that only about 15 GB got reduced from System, while the remaining got reduced from 'Other files'.
So it is not doing the allocation properly. I guess the problem could be with the My Files app version 14.1.03.16 that is installed in my phone. It is not necessarily OneUI problem.
Hi, my system folder is 73.5G. So, why we have different numbers listed here? Is it because it's including the downloaded apps or just the bloatware included by Samsung and the carrier?

You haven't given 'Usage Data Access' to My Files app. So the size occupied by all installed apps have been included in your System classification.
Also, the value of System will be different for devices with different storage sizes, even if it they are identical in all other aspects and are running on the same build of the OS.
This has been discussed here:
Why is the OS (System) size different for different storage variants of the same device model?
I have seen that the space occupied by 'System' is different for different storage sizes of the same device. My Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra shows space occupied by system as over 50 GB. Mine is the 512 GB variant (Snapdragon). While I don't...

The category "System" is made up by
a) all partitions except /data
b) all directories and files on /data that are only accessible to the system, e.g. /data/system or /data/misc
The size of "System" may vary depending on how much data is stored on /data by the system. Mostly these are logs and configuration files.
Your installed apps (system + user) are listed as "Apps".
I'm just asking, does this do anything to the functionality of your device?

Is there a terminal command to make the system file partition larger? I have a ton of free space on my sd card, and I have removed all the apk files I will not use, that can be removed, but I'm still having trouble flashing an MM theme, because it's not allowing me to rename the .apk I need to rename due to lack of space in my system folder. It says I need at least 5g free to do the themeing, but I've read that most roms only give you like 125mb in your system folder?

Something isn't right there... 5g system partition is unheard of...I'm at a loss... I'd believe 5mb.

What theme are you trying to apply, and what are you using to do it (MetaMorph, ZipThemer, T-Mobile/CM7 theme manager?).
I'm attempting to theme my swype keyboard. With http://www.4shared.com/file/V0t2yy0a/DarkLimePlasticSwype.html
Using metamorph.
When I run the theme it says "swype.apk" not found in system/apps
Found out that this is because it's named com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk, So I attempted to change it using the terminal command
su
cp /system/app/com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
but it said "no space on the drive"
Coming from the HTC Rezound, I'm having some Nandroid issues on my VZW SGS3 (and questions):
1. On the Rezound, Nandroid backups were like four or five image files. However, on the SGS3, there's a \\Cynogenmod\backup folder with some image files and a \\cyanogenmod\blobs folder with a whole bunch of subfolders and smaller files. What is the difference? What does the blobs folder contain? Is it different because of the Cyanogenmod recovery or because it's the SGS3?
2. I had three backups from three different ROM flashes and when I try to restore any of them, they all fail with either an MD5 Checksum mismatch or some "unable to access" error. I tried the workaround of using the CMD line to rebuild the MD5 file, but no luck. I should also mention I renamed the backup folders because Nandroid puts them in folders dated in the year 1970 and I can't remember what backups were of what. Anyone else having this issue?
Thanks in advance.

wmaudio what program are you using to create your nandroid backups? I've been using CWM 6.0.1.0 and noticed the 1970 files as well. I've been using the Clockwork Mod Recovery app so I can name the nandroid backups.

Awesome response. Thank you very much. I forgot that you could initiate the ROM backup process from ROM Manager. The only downside is that it backs up to the internal sdcard rather than the external one. I'll check options to see if I can change that. I wonder if moving the backup to the external card will cause me to encounter the same issues. Thanks again.
I just checked my clockworkmod/blobs folder and it is full of I'm guessing hashed folders, which contain a hashed file name. I checked the date in a astro file manager and they were all modified 2/6/1970 as well.
Does anyone know the use of these files? Can they be deleted?

Most ROMs for the S3 are at least 550MB in size and can be over a 1GB. I checked the size of the dated folder and it's under 100MB, and the blobs folder is almost 2GB in size. Add settings files and other content created from general use of the phone, and that could theoretically bring a backed-up ROM to 2GB or more, so deduction tells me that I would recommend that you don't delete the blobs folder.

DO NOT DELETE THEM this is how cwm6 does backups now, just delete the main dated one from the backup folder and when you make your next backup cwm will automatically remove the ones from the blobs folder when it says "Freeing Space"
This is how Koush explained it:
New ClockworkMod Backup Format
TL;DR:
Don't delete /sdcard/clockworkmod/blobs
I've gotten a few questions about how this works, so I figured I'd make a post on it.
Basically, here's what happens:
The files being backed up are hashed (sha256, not that it matters). Then it checks for a file with the name of the hash in
/sdcard/clockworkmod/blobs
So, if the hash of the file was c5273884b90d490134e7737b29a65405cea0f7bb786ca82c63 37ceb24de6f5ed, it looks for /sdcard/clockworkmod/blobs/c5273884b90d490134e7737b29a65405cea0f7bb786ca82c63 37ceb24de6f5ed
If the hash file is found, it continues on to the next file. Otherwise, it copies the file to the blobs directory with the file name being the hash.
ROMs and user data, for the most part, do not change too much between builds and backups. So, your APKs, system files, etc, are generally only stored once. This saves a ton of space. Especially between incremental backups.
Some of you may be thinking "well, how do I delete a backup?".
First, never delete the blobs directory. This would actually delete all your backups by rendering them unusable.
Simply delete the usual backup directory, and the next time you run a backup, all the unused hash files will be automatically delete (a process known as garbage collection). The recovery will show "Freeing space..." while this is happening.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to clean up my phone to make it faster and free up some memory. But while I was looking for files and folders that can be thrown away, I wasn't sure about few of them & couldn't determine whether I can get rid of them or not! Here are the folders and files I'm asking about (they're all located in the internal memory):
1- (.droidga)
contains some unknown files like (gad_ds), (gad_gt), (gad_install), and some other files with the extension of (.p)
2- (iten)
contains only one file (iten_v2.db)
The following ones are located inside (Android/data) folder:
3- (com.chartboost.sdk)
contains a file (chartboost.cb)
4- (ly.font)
contains a cache folder with many different files
can anyone please explain what these folders are & if it's safe to remove them or not!
Thanks a lot!

These files and folders are generated by the apps that you have installed. If you want to delete unnecessary folders then use Android Assistant(18 Features) from Play Store and do cleanup. This will also give you a slight performance gain.. But if you delete these folders then again it will be regenerated by the corresponding app.
One more advice if you are rooted and find reduction in performance then Wipe cache from cwm from time to time this will also help you.
Hope you got your answer.
Thanks

Well I'm actually using another app called "Clean Master" & it does the job very well, but still these folders & files exist.
I know they're are not a big deal even in terms of the space they occupy, but the thing is I had tons of apps installed on my phone previously then I decided to do the factory reset few days ago. It feels much lighter and faster now, but even after the reset some folders created by apps I had before were not completely removed. I removed everything I know, but also wanted to go further and remove any other unnecessary files. I just wasn't sure whether the files I mentioned are system files or not.
& no my phone is not rooted.
Thanks a lot for the tips! :good:
Hi,
I have a 16GB nexus 5, i have 10,72GB of the 12,55GB available storage space used. Using ES file explorer SD-card analyses (a rough add up) tells me that i have 5,12GB of space used. After some browsing through my phone i found out that i have a double folder(same contents and size), 0 and legacy. Googleing gave that this is a so called sys link. However, when I go to the upper most 'layer' (device) i have a folder sdcard(with an arrow on the lower left corner which I assume means it’s a link) and a folder storage. In the storage folder I have a folder 'emulated' which is 10,40GB and a folder called sdcard0 which is 5,20GB.
In the emulated folder i have 2 folder, 0 and legacy, when I look at either one the folders it has 5,20GB, when I look at them combined they are 5,20GB. This tells me that they are links to each other(correct?).
Why does ‘emulated’ think that is has 10,40GB of data in it while it only has 5,20GB?
Is there a way to solve this or should I just transfer everything to my pc and format my data partition?
Thanks

Hi guys! I have an Xperia Z3 D6633 running on official Android version 6.0.1 with build number 23.5.a.1.291 rooted. My problem is that almost 5.0 GB of my internal storage is consumed by ".thumbnails" folder which I want to delete. I have searched some solutions and found out that normally people get some free space till these files reappear and in the mean time they can make this space useful but the case is different here. I have tried to delete this folder and all the containing files but even though the folder disappears for some time, I still don't get any free space even for a short time and the files start to reappear after some time. I don't have any Gallery other than the Album app and as it cannot be deleted, I have tried disabling but the problem still remains. I have also tried creating a new folder with the same name but the system would rename it to ".thumbnails 1" and another folder with the name ".thumbnails" would reappear . I had the same problem also with Lollipop on this device. I use FILE KOMMANDER, it is the system app.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Try MiXplorer from XDA (file commander isnt so good) then delete the .thumbs folder
Try Ccleaner from play store
Try SD Maid from play store
Try clearing data from Settings - apps - Media Storage (all your media will appear to be gone. It is still there but the phone wont see it until you reboot / download and run Media.re.scan from play store)
I wouldn't really know what else to suggest other than a clean install of your ROM even if it is stock as this seems like a bug

FYI .thumbnails folder will always exist to make android media work properly, easiest method is delete those folder (.thumbnails) then create file named .thumbnails
In my case I'm using es file explorer, best file manager ever for me
You should accept all consequences, app that using photo preview from Android Media will not show or buggy (ie. Instagram, Facebook)
