Compiled list of safe to Uninstall/Freeze Apps for Galaxy S8

UPDATE: Attached an importable XML file to the OP, which can be used to disable the below services/apps in bulk, within BK Disabler.
Coming from a long list of Nexus and Pixel phones running pure Android, The Galaxy S8 is my first phone with TouchWiz. While I love the phone and Samsung's take on the UI, I've been on a mission to get the Galaxy S8 to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible in order to avoid unnecessary battery drain and RAM usage. I've spent a good amount of time going down the list of preloaded processes on the S8 and researching to see which ones are safe to uninstall/disable without hindering any day-to-day functionality of the phone.
To start, since I have the T-Mobile variant, I uninstalled/disabled every T-Mobile related app/process on my phone. Then, after reading up on all of the below processes to ensure they were not necessary and safe to freeze, I used BK Package Disabler to freeze these:
com.samsung.aasaservice (AASAservice)
com.sec.android.AutoPreconfig (AutoPreconfig)
com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks
com.samsung.android.app.watchmanagerstub *don't freeze if you use Samsung Gear*
com.samsung.android.email.provider *don't freeze if you use the default Samsung Email app*
com.sec.edgtestapp (EpdgTestApp)
com.sec.android.widgetapp.samsungapps (Galaxy Essentials Widget)
com.samsung.android.app.vrsetupwizardstub (Gear VR SetupWizardStub) *don't freeze if you use Samsung Gear*
com.sec.android.service.health (Health Service) *don't freeze if you use Samsung Health*
com.lookout (Lookout) *As explorer-10 pointed out, make sure to disable Lookout as a Device Administrator under "Settings > Lock screen and security > Other security settings > Device Administrators"*
com.android.printspooler (Print Spooler)
com.samsung.android.beaconmanager (Samsung Connect)
com.sec.android.app.sns3 (Samsung Galaxy)
com.samsung.android.app.mirrorlink (Samsung MirrorLink 1.1) * don't freeze if you connect your phone to your car via USB for Android Auto*
com.sec.spp.push (Samsung Push Service)
com.sec.android.app.SecSetupWizard (Samsung setup wizard)
com.samsung.SMT (Samsung text-to-speach engine)
com.samsung.oh (Samsung+)
additional T-Mobile related processes that I froze:
com.tmobile.pr.mytmobile (T-Mobile)
com.tmobile.vvm.application ( T-Mobile Visual Voicemail)
com.tmobile.pr.adapt
Lastly, to make my phone feel a bit snappier, I enabled developer settings (Settings > About Phone > tap "Build number" 7 times) and turned Window animation scale and Transition animation scale both to "0". The end result of all this is a Galaxy S8 that feels just as fast/snappy as my Google Pixel did.
I imagine I missed a few processes that are safe to freeze since my main focus was just on ones that were constantly running and draining battery/RAM usage. So please feel free to comment with any additional processes you've found and I'll update the list.
Thanks for the list

Wow! That's a huge list. You can confirm that every one of those are safe to uninstall/freeze without hindering any core functionality of the phone?
Some things are obviously without functiuon, but nothing elemental like the search engine (I found a list where this was deactivated)
IE: The default Mail app or Google Quick Search are disabled, some menu point within the assistance menu are not working anymore, maximum powersaving isn't working anymore (because the minimalistic launcher which is used by it is also deactivated)
Atm I'm looking for the Speech engine (the Mic icon left of the Space bar), because it seems like I deactivated this and I use it quite often so it's a little anoying
EDIT:
The AOD is one point I disabled because I prefer not to use it, but that is something which could be usefull to someone else
You the real MVP
Will freezing this one actually get rid of the forced bookmarks in the samsung browser. i hate that.
com.android.providers.partnerbookmarks
I can't tell you that, because i prefer Firefox on all my devices (Bookmark Sync is essential for me)
Regarding the Voice dictation problem: I found the app I deactivated which was responsible for it: the Google App. So if you use this app OR the voice dictation feature, you should let it enabled.
Another problem I ran into: Contacts an Calendar sync (to Google) don't work properly anymore with the Samsung Calendar and Contacts app.
Temporary workaround: use the Google Contacts App (you'll find it on APK Mirror) and Google Calendar, these sync fine
I'll try to find a solution for it, but for now I don't have the time for it and will reset my device to get it working properly again.
I'll keep you and the original Post of mine updated with the new infos

Yes. It also gets rid of the forced bookmarks in Chrome.
Its probably the most useful list I have found so far but for anyone to know whether they want to disable each service or not, they all need some sort of brief explanation of what they do. I disabled what i thought were obvious ones on mine (anything with bixby or gear in the name for a start) but there were lots that i left alone as i couldnt find anything on what exactly they did.

Agreed 100%
A brief explanation would be highly beneficial.
Would be useful if you could make the first post into an importable xml file.

How'd you get Lookout to disable via BK? I got a fall message asking to re-enable disabled apps and restart the app. Did that to no avail.

Are you referring to the list I put in the OP? If so, I already put a brief description in parentheses next to each service, wherever possible. Not really sure what else you'd like added to each line.

Great point. I exported my current Disabled Services XML file from BK Disabler and uploaded it to Google Drive. The OP is updated with this XML file.

It didn't cause any issues for me. I simply installed BK Disabler, ran down the list of apps/services I wanted to disable (including Lookout) and it disabled them all, no problem. I just double checked and can confirm that Lookout is still disabled even after multiple OS updates from T-Mobile.
Maybe try uploading the XML file I just put in the OP to see if that method works.

Weird, Lookout is not an option under Device Administration on my phone. I can't remember if I disabled within Device Administrator prior to disabling it with BK Installer. Nonetheless, I updated the OP with this bullet point for disabling Lookout in case anyone else runs into the same issue.

I appreciate this however I'm curious how much difference in battery life does this really make or is it more of a nuisance thing than anything else?

[GUIDE] Remove all bloatware from your Fire HD 10 (2017)

I've been doing a bit of tinkering and troubleshooting in order to see if the Google ecosystem can play well with the Amazon ecosystem.
This guide is based on some of the advice given on this thread, but I've customized it specifically for those Fire HD (2017) owners that do want to debloat their tablets while preserving their Alexa Hands Free, Kindle, Prime Music/Video and Shopping apps.
You can either choose to disable the following packages with Titanium Backup (it's my preferable method) or through ADB if you're already familiar with the Android Debug Bridge.
I didn't include the pm uninstall command in this guide because it's easier to restore disabled apps in comparison to restoring uninstalled apps. I feel that it's a big risk to uninstall packages and don't want to be held liable for any mistakes that you've done. You can, however, refer to the directions provided at this link if you do want to fully uninstall packages.
Requirements:
Root (This easy guide shows you how to root your 7th generation Fire HD)
Fire OS 5.6.0.0
Fire HD (2017)
ADB (Optional, this 'Lite' package is officially provided by Google)
Basic knowledge of ADB commands
Downloads:
Titanium Backup (optional, but makes the work less tedious)
Nova Launcher (optional, if you intend to replace the default launcher)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADB Commands to Disable Packages (APKs):
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# pm disable <name of package>
Example:
Code:
#pm disable com.amazon.photos
ADB Commands to Enable Packages (APKs):
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# pm enable <name of package>
Example:
Code:
#pm enable com.amazon.photos
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1: Install Nova Launcher: (Optional, only if you plan to remove the default Amazon launcher)
Use this guide to inject Nova Launcher into the /system partition
When Nova Launcher becomes a system app you're able to add widgets and access Google Now by swiping right on the screen
Step 2: Disable any of the packages deemed safe in this Google Sheet via ADB or Titanium Backup:
Open this Google Sheet
Contributions to this sheet are appreciated
Step 3: Clear Cache:
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# rm -r /data/dalvik-cache
# rm -r /cache/dalvik-cache
# reboot

you list the 3 packages that have "metrics" in the name. I saw that on an old guide and uninstalled one of them. The thing bootlooped. I could get into an ADB shell with SU and I reinstalled that metrics package and it miraculously started working again. maybe that's the difference between uninstalling and disabling, or maybe it's because I still want some amazon apps to work, like alexa, prime video, shopping, amazon app store.
I've personally disabled all of the packages that say 'metrics' in them and can safely say that I haven't experienced any issues. Alexa also works with the list which I provided. I facepalm because forgot to add that to the subject line of this post. Alexa is pretty damn useful.

Great, thank you for sharing. I was just about to do sth similar, because i also want to keep using Alexa.
Speaking of which, I see some packages in your list which I'd expect to possibly pose problems with Alexa if disabled or uninstalled, like weather, calculator or calendar.
Also some, like device.crashmanager, sound like they maybe shouldn't be removed.
Maybe just disabling them keeps some important ressources in place that would otherwise be deleted?
At least mistermojorizin's experience suggests an important difference between disabling and uninstalling.
You raise some good points. I'm very new to the Fire HD line (I personally own a Huawei Mediapad M3 and a OnePlus 3T) and had to root them in order to add in the Google Play ecosystem. And I wanted to make their tablets as close to vanilla as possible so my parents, that both have ZTE ZMax Blade phones, wouldn't have to adjust to the Fire OS interface. I consider you all to be more knowledgeable than I am with this line so please feel free to correct me if I've made some mistakes on this thread.
With regards to device.crashmanager, it's been suggested by some other Fire "debloat" threads that it's okay to be disabled. Below are the sources that I've used to come up with my list. I'll leave it to the community to look at the links and decide whether the packages are alright or not to be disabled. This thread is a living document which I'll fix whenever problems are pointed out.
I'm going to experiment with what mistermojorizin's said right now and see if all metrics can be disabled without causing bootloops.

Others maybe, I'm certainly not. I was just writing down my thoughts after checking your list, without being an expert on this.

I've personally disabled all of the packages that say 'metrics' in them and can safely say that I haven't experienced any issues. Alexa also works with the list which I provided. I facepalm because forgot to add that to the subject line of this post. Alexa is pretty damn useful.

Weird. I tried to uninstall three metrics packages a week ago and got into trouble. Wondering how you did it.
Hi guys, first of all thanks for the detailed thread
This is the more specific thread I have found for the fire HD8 7th generation but apologies if this isn't the right place for my question. I have been a while reading about the tablet, it's version, software and the possibilities for it.
I can see in all the threads the required version is FireOS 5.6.0.0 but I upgraded to FireOS 5.6.0.1 So I am not sure if my version is compatible with all the procedures here...
I thought the FireOS included was complete enough to use normal apps like Youtube, GMail, use chromecast, etc... So at this point I am disappointed and willing to install a different ROM. Is there any custom ROMs available? I haven't found anything
Thanks in advance
Hey @manuten,
I haven't updated my first batch of Fire HD's to 5.6.0.1 yet. Was this 5.6.0.1 a must have update? Were you able to get a glimpse of the changelog by any chance? I just got another Fire HD in my hands and will be debloating it soon. If you could wait a bit I'll have some updates on the Google Sheet soon. For anyone who has recently installed 5.6.0.1 could you please update my Google Sheet with new bloatware if the update came with it?
Thank you all!

So I have been searching for the changelog. I can see some release notes but they only say: "General improvements and performance enhancements" The also have a link for more information but that redirects to the 5.6.0.0 Release Notes. So there is not much information there, sorry.
Let me know if there any more information I can provide
Topic should say Fire HD 10 (2017), as the linked root method is only for the HD10 and does not work on the HD8.
So is there any word on if this is all kosher with 5.6.0.1

Jesus Christ, that made my life a lot easier- thanks!
Hi, bit of a noob question here but I've not seen it answered yet reading around these threads: On a rooted HD 10 (7th, OS 5.6.0.0) can we uninstall amazon apps and then install them from Google Play and use them without registering the whole device? I want to stay unregistered but still sign into individual Amazon apps such as Video. I followed the process on this thread (very clear, thanks OP!) using Amazon Music as a test - using uninstall rather than disable - reinstalled from Google Play and still got prompted to register device. Any advice?
I disabled a handful of apps listed here after installing an alternate launcher.
I tried changing the wallpaper after that, but there is no app or handler to do so.
What is the app/service that handles that?

I use Nova Launcher and I am able to switch wallpapers with that. If your lock screen is still enabled, though, and you want to change it, I believe you need to use Amazon Photos

Thanks that helped. The wallpaper change even stays if you decide to use a different launcher. I am trying out the rootless Pixel launcher and it's working well.
I do have another problem though. Alexa seems to be missing from my device. I made sure not to disable any apps/services that are required for Alexa according to the Google Docs sheet posted in OP. The Alexa app still exists on the device but there is no option to enable it to disable it in Settings under Device Options. According to some guides on the net it should be in Device Options right above Date & Time but it's missing.

All these comments are for 5.6.0.1:
If your device looks like mine, it should currently have two rows of four under Device Options:
[Wireless Network] [Airplane Mode] [Blue Shade] [Do Not Disturb]
[Bluetooth] [Help] [Auto-Rotate] [Camera]
If so, then you need to enable Alexa in the Fire's Settings app. It's on the left-hand side, fourth item down under "Device" (the top option).
Tapping that should replace the [Camera] in Device Options with [Alexa Hands-Free]. (Once you enable Alexa under Device, there will also be a toggle for Alexa Hands-Free under that menu.)
And if you've already done that . . . I'm at a loss.

You don't need to be a developer. There is no code involved in the above instructions.
Install "Package Disabler Pro" on your Smartphone.
This app list the real name of the app.
Example:
Vodafone Appbox = package:com.aura.oobe.samsung.gl
Delete it with adb:
start with developer options, then you have to do:
"adb shell"
"pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.aura.oobe.samsung.gl"
An other example:
Samsung Free = package:com.samsung.android.app.spage
"pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.app.spage"
Astalavista baby
The first time I saw this topic (that is, easy-debloat without using a rooted version of Android) was from this article, which is a bit out of date but explains the basic premise:
https://www.xda-developers.com/disable-system-app-bloatware-android/
If you're not familiar with the Google program "adb" this may be helpful too:
https://www.xda-developers.com/install-adb-windows-macos-linux/
And even some documentation from the authors of the ADB command:
https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb/
As you know, many pre-installed applications can be removed via Settings→Apps, as you'd expect. If removal is prevented then try using Google's Android Device Bridge command (running on a PC or Mac; I use Linux) using the adb command.
You're right to be concerned about what applications are related to a package disabled or uninstalled by any of these methods. An application may have prerequisites or corequisites. As always, use care making changes like this!
ExampleImagine you prefer Google's Contacts application, rather than Samsung's. As best I can tell, on Android 12, the Samsung Contacts application cannot be uninstalled or disabled by a novice user via Settings-->Apps. But what might happen if you could successfully remove Samsung's Contacts application? I tried this scenario and here's what I found: Samsung's Contacts application appears to be required for Settings-->Safety and emergency-->Medical info.
How did I test this? Well, it's possible to force a disable Samsung Contacts using a command similar to:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.app.contactsPackage com.samsung.android.app.contacts new state: disabled-user
If you now try to navigate to Settings-->Safety and emergency-->Medical info, you'll get a pop-up message saying something like:
Unable to open Contacts. Tap SETTINGS,go to App info > Permissions, then allowthe following permissions and try again:Contacts
This is why I think Samsung’s Contacts is a prerequisite for some services. Services which do need Samsung’s Contacts application’s services will notify you with a pop-up message, like the one above. (And no, installing Google’s Contacts application doesn’t help.)
In any case, if you're unhappy, you can easily undo what you've done so far with this command:
adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.app.contactsPackage com.samsung.android.app.contacts new state: enabled
Your phone should be none the worse for trying this example. But for fun, let's continue the scenario, Samsung Contacts can be uninstalled rather than merely disabled:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.samsung.android.app.contactsSuccess
However now it’s not possible to even navigate to Settings-->Safety and emergency-->Medical info. The item remains under the Safety and emergency settings, but it is not grayed out (a common way to know you can’t tap on an item), and clicking it doesn't work (no error message). So I think Samsung's Contacts application is a hard prereq for Medical info. ("Hard", as in "There's no way around it.") What's more, the Emergency contacts (also under the Safety and emergency entry in Settings) item doesn't work. So more than one feature isn't working.
If you change your mind you can reinstall the package:
adb shell pm install-existing com.samsung.android.app.contactsPackage com.samsung.android.app.contacts installed for user: 0
After a reinstall I'm pretty sure your phone is again working well. End of example.
I'm not an expert on this topic. And I don't mean to start a new discussion about this topic on this thread. I thought you'd like an answer to your question, with what I hope are specific examples and links. There's another (one of many, actually) active discussion, which mentions certain corequisite and prerequisite packages, by name, and why you might want to keep some. See:
[ADB] [NO-ROOT] Samsung Optimization Guide - A Better Experience
PS: At the end of my playing around I decided to keep Samsung's Contacts application, and hide it as best I can by using a feature in Nova Launcher Prime. Why? It was important for me to have my phone able to display medical info (allergies).

How To Guide Debloat LISTS - S22 Ultra Series

Hey everyone, figure i start a thread on apps/etc that can be safely disabled, so that we can dial on on removing needless junk from our phones.
I am currently running a Snapdragon S22 Ultra, SM-S908U 512GB (AT&T variant) so my list may vary versus other Snapdragon variants.
LIST BELOW, this is for SnapDragon users. There are some AT&T apps other Snapdragon uses will not have, each carrier has their own bloatware added. I may have missed a few or have a few added you may not have.
If you own a Verizon, T-Mobile, or Unlocked S22 Ultra, please PM me with a list of your running processes and i will attempt to create a minimalist list for each Snapdragon variant.
This is a work in progress; your feedback helps, as does that of any others with more experience or knowledge to share!
Your battery life will differ from mine depending on your preferences.
I have battery saving on, 70% max CPU speed on, 720p, fixed 60hz, 85% max charge, and some other misc tweaks i would be happy to share. I will update this post with all settings maxxed out in a few days (by end of March)
Instructions
Use ADB AppControl for ease of use, and simply create a text file in your ADB AppControl/presets folder and copy these entries and save as txt.
Enable USB debugging on your S22 Ultra
Load up ADB AppControl, on PC, connect S22 Ultra and connect in 'Cable Charging' mode.
Follow instructions to correctly connect your S22 Ultra (easy walkthrough, only needs to be done once)
Once connected properly, hit 'Load Preset' and load the txt file you made
Click dropdown in bottom right and hit APPLY
This list DISABLES Chrome, Google Assistant, DeX, Edge screen, ALL AT&T crap, ALL gaming related crap, PenUP, S-health, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, and some other minor 'features'. All are easily restored and i will separate this list with descriptors in a few days.

Just wanted to show you the nice Poll and that Iam a long time bloatware remover as well
But I recommend to use the lists above, as they are more recent and relevant.
Those lists are pretty aggressive and remove tons of features folks might use. Folks, don't just blindly use those without checking and knowing what you're removing.
Can we remove one SMS / text Messaging App ?
I can see Samsung Messages and Google Messages both. Why do we have two apps for the same purpose ?

Google's alternative for Apple's iMessage.
Why RCS?
With reliable global infrastructure and a consistent user experience, Google's RCS (Rich Communication Services) technology helps the mobile community deliver better messaging everywhere.

As far as I can tell, RCS is also on Samsung Messages, at least here in Europe (Slovakia). At least it seems to me that these "Chat features" are just that.
Do we have to use ADB console for this or are there some good (non-root) apps that can help with debloating?

currentoy using adb to debloat, so far huge battery improvement but also on day 3 with it ao that coincides with battery usage learning as well.
Still refining the list of safe to disable stuff, about another 2 days testing. Managed to get very good battery life, but that involved disabling some stuff... ATT sent me a 4G sim so i havent tested battery drain with 5G, and im using bixby routines to do some stuff like auto-kill apps at night etc. 720P, 60Hz (i dont care about 120hz since i dont game), CPU on optimized, and battery saving on. Wifi OFF, BT and NFC OFF, no facebook or other social media besides reddit.
Impressive battery life in this config. Snapdragon 512GB via AT&T.

Do you get any actual notifications pushed? I noticed with battery saving mode, nothing got pushed.
yes, and to the always on display as well. Im using Nova so i have it configured through there, works fine. Should get about 50hrs with around 9-11 hrs SOT in this config, impressed so far, my Note7's got about 10hrs with 3hrs SOT towards the end, initially about 18hrs with 4hrs SOT and that was also with debloating done.

[DISCONTINUED] Samsung Galaxy One UI - Optimization Guide
THIS IS A SUGGESTED CONFIGURATION FOR SAMSUNG DEVICES OUT OF SUPPORT/CLOSED I - RECOMMENDED SETTINGS To Start With - Factory Reset before starting optimisations - Factory Reset after every Major update (One UI/Android) - Remove SIM before first...

Guide will be updated later tonight.
Currently on day 6, 4 of which have been neutered, getting 50hrs avg charged to 85% max with 10hrs SOT. No wifi, all 4g.
Battery saving, 720p, 60hz, proc limited to 70%.
I will test with full res, adaptive hz, and 100% proc speed for the next two charge cycles and report back here, i expect approx 40hr battery life with 8hr SOT.
I dont game or need 120hz/wqhd+, so ill probably stick with whatever nets me the most battery life. Comfortably getting 2 daya of battery life is excellent coming from my Note7 that struggled to get 10hrs with 3hrs SOT after 5.5yrs.

Question "I have very little knowledge (about rooted devices). Which apps can I remove?"

Hello,
I am planning to use "Xiaorni ADB/Fastboot" to remove some applications on my rooted device. I would like to know which apps pose a risk so I can avoid deleting them.
We have installed "Odin" as the ROM and a friend used "DftPro 3.5.9" to root the device. Now, I would like to make several modifications.
Here is what I would like to do:
First, remove unnecessary system apps (I would like to know which system apps on the following list could cause "brick" and which ones can be safely removed)
Customize the appearance of the icons and layout on the home screen (I would like to create a minimalist layout)
Rename apps on the home screen
Install premium apps, regardless of the cost (I know this depends on my needs, but I would appreciate some suggestions)
Find a CRM project management app (such as "RISE CRM Project Manager") - (price is not a concern)
Find a budgeting app for managing expenses and income with statistical analysis and other high-quality features
Find a to-do list app that allows for keeping track of statistics and logs (such as Todoist, or any other recommendations for a paid app)

I read that some apps could cause a brick, as you mentioned, and I also read the comments. I am not leaving any personal data on my phone anymore and I am backing everything up to my computer and hard drive. I have removed many unnecessary system apps and am now working on the control panel, theme, and launcher. I am trying to create a fully personalized interface. Last night, I watched at least 100 videos on this topic, but my head is spinning. No launcher seems to be able to do exactly what I want. Additional apps are always needed, which consumes memory, CPU, and RAM. If you have any recommendations for a control panel, home screen customization, folder organization, renaming, theme, icon, and emoji customization, I would appreciate them.
"I installed 'vayu_id_global_images_V13.0.5.0.SJUIDXM_20230129.0000.00_12.0_global_8539d7eff5'. Actually, I responded a bit ignorantly earlier. I'm sure it's not much of a problem as long as we don't install too many fragmented apps that consume a lot of RAM and CPU. I mean that in that sense. For example, let's solve the issue with just one paid software or at most 2 software with that logic."
I need your knowledge and experience about the subject. I would be very grateful if you could help me. Greetings to everyone from Turkey, have a nice work day.
Use universal android debloater. It's way better for your use case, it will also show if something is not safe to remove and you don't need root, you can even have locked bootloader.
