What should I backup? - General Questions and Answers

Hello, I have been struggling with an issue in my moto e5. I unlocked bootloader & installed custom roms. Then I thought I should go back to the stock rom & I did so. But after booting up, mobile data doesn’t work (No service). Auto rotation doesn’t work. Also it can't detect when I pick up my phone. But in custom roms, there is no issue like this! I flashed stock rom using rescue and smart assistant tool. I also did flash using fastboot commands batch file. But the issue persists.
Next I found that imei is lost in stock rom. So I installed custom rom, backed up "efs" from twrp, installed stock rom & restored the efs. I got my imei numbers back! But no service and auto rotation issue is still there along with other disabled sensors.
What else should I backup and restore? Or what should be my next steps?

One always backs up the whole Stock Andoid before flashing anything. Only blue-eyed people do not.

ROM Backup Question

Hi there,
I rooted my phone, and following the guide, from the recovery screen did a 'NAND' back up before wiping then flashing a new ROM. Am I right in thinking, the 'NAND' backup took a copy/image of my phone, I.e if I wanted to return my phone to it's original state, with the stock ROM from my vendor, I could just do a 'Nand' restore?
Thanks
Absolutely correct. Can be restored either from within Rom Manager or directly from Recovery.
Thanks Mr Gently,
So I'm guessing now that I've installed a custom Rom and set it up how I like, if I wanted to test drive a different ROM, I could do another 'NAND' backup, incase I don't like the new ROM, restore it back to how my phone is as I'm typing this, apps and all?
Precisely! It's a great feature to have, especially as you can have multiple backups and swap between them as you see fit.
Huzzah!A great feature indeed, thanks for replying.

[Q] "Unfortunately, IMS Service has stopped"

I'm having issues with my Galaxy S6. I used Odin to return to stock, and now I'm getting an "Unfortunately, IMS Service has stopped" error every 2 or 3 seconds. The phone is essentially unusable.
Other Galaxy phones have had similar issues, and I've tried some of their suggestions. I wiped Media Storage and factory reset the phone through the recovery. I tried to find the DRM app to wipe, but it's not there in the app manager. Does anybody have any suggestions? They are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Im having that same issue. I bricked my phone for about a week and I had just got the tar files to open and return my device to stock. Is it saying you have service? Ive been looking this up everywhere and have no luck with the s6 problem.

Why did you return to stock? If you are planning to return/exchange the phone, then you may run into trouble if it is unusable.
3 options:
1. Attempt to reflash stock via Odin and hope it fixes the problem.
2. Restore a nandroid.
3. Clean flash a custom rom.

i tried to reflash stock again and the same message kept coming up. i thought that restoring would wipe root so i dont know how you could flash a custom rom onto it. would you do that through the Odin program??

Android lollipop gives you the option to transfer your apps to a new device when you setup the new device. You are also given this option when you flash a custom lollilop rom, because the setup wizard will see this as a new device. However, you should always make a backup of a good working rom setup prior to flashing a new rom or any mods. When I say a "good working rom ", I mean a rom that you might possibly want to go back to, in case your next rom flash doesn't go well or it has major issues that prevent you from using it as a daily driver (which you won't know until you flash it, obviously). The stock rom is definitely a "good working rom", and you should ALWAYS make a backup of stock before flashing anything else.
Since you don't have a backup of stock, then you are stuck with Odin getting you back to bone stock, which apparently isn't quite doing the job. The only other thing I can suggest is flashing a stock rooted rom (eg, no mods other than root). But make sure you clean flash, which also means mounting & wiping /system in recovery. I forgot how to do it in CWM/Phil's recovery, but in TWRP go to Mount, tap /system then go back to the main menu, go to Wipe > Advanced and select cache, dalvik cache, data and system, then swipe to erase. Now you have a totally clean slate.

Ive tried looking online for software thats compatible with my carrier (cricket) but I couldnt find it. The way that I bricked my phone was trying to flash TWRP recovery on my phone. Cricket is through at&t and has the locked bootloader. I used pingpong root to root it but apparently it wasnt compatible with my phone. I'm kinda stuck.

I have never messed with Cricket phones. I know they piggyback on the AT&T network, but I don't know if the firmwares are different. You could go to a Cricket store and look at the display S6 to find out the exact firmware version, and try to find that on the web (posting in the AT&T forum might yield a faster response). But trying to flash TWRP was not a good idea. Good luck!
I was attempting to return the phone to stock so I could sell it. I flashed the Cricket firmware, and ever since then I get the IMS service error. I can't flash a new ROM because I unrooted through Pingpong Root. When I flash through Odin, I only flash the AP .tar. Would it make a difference if I flashed all 4 (BL, AP, CP, CSC)?

Yes it does make a difference to flash it into 4 different parts in case you have the entire firmware
Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here, i woke to this lovely issue, which was rendering my phone unusable. I use a program call YouMail for voicemail, creeps my friends out when they get to my voice mail. Uninstall this program after wiping every cache imaginable, voila, no more issue. I haven't tried to reinstall it yet since i need to get some work done. Hope it helps in some way.
I have the same problem after flashing the stock firmware thru Odin on my S6 from Cricket. I also tried Factory Resert and Wiping the Cache, nothing seems to help at all. I get the annoying message about the IMS service. I've tried clearing the cache from contacts, ims service but no luck at at. Is there any other ROMs out there for the S6 from Cricket. Right now my phone is completely stock and has no service. Any word of advice would help, Thanks !
Edit: I flashed the CSC file thru odin and it got rid of the IMS error but now I have no service.

Not an expert in any sense of the term, so ignore this if it's dumb. When the OP and others having this issue are bringing your phones back up, does the issue start prior to phone setup? Or is your Google account restoring some app that could be causing the issue?
it didnt solve my problem
I have the s6 edge though ..do i have to wipe and install the rom again??
Unfortunately ims has stopped working pop up
I noticed the spinning sync icon at the top my s7 phone. It was constantly trying to sync my messengers app to the cloud. (I tuned the sync function off an it seems to have stopped the annoying message from popping up. :good::fingers-crossed:

Motorola Photon q, no wifi nor bluetooth engaged

Good day everybody,
I am a proud owner of a modified Motorola Photon Q. It is my replacement of my well beloved Xperia Pro (in which the flex-cable between screen and board was too fragile).
I recieved the phone, and it had Cyanogenmod 12.1 on it, with working wifi etc. So it was good and well. Except, I like to start from completely 0 myself and choose my own most stable Cyanogenmod possible.
So I flashed a new recovery (twrp 2.7.1.2) and put the zip file of a snapshot from Cyanogenmod (12.1) on my SD.
No trouble on the recovery flash through fastboot, no trouble on formatting everything wih recovery and no trouble installing the .zip package. 0 errors during the entire process.
However, after the installation the wifi nor bluetooth go on. I tried flashing other stable/snapshot versions from Cyanogenmod but none seems to make my wifi actually work the way it should.
I am getting stuck here, does anybody have any idea's for me? This issue is happening on 10.2, stable and 12.1 both snapshot versions.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Flash stock with RSD Lite. Make sure everything works on stock before moving to anything custom.
Good luck.

Thank you for these tips.
I will give this a try, though it is my first time ever with RSD.
What if it does work with RSD? Will this change behaviour towards Cyanogenmod?

Possibly. You should always start with stock, and know how to get back to stock on any device you are going to flash with aftermarket firmwares. You need to ensure there are no hardware issue with the device before proceeding with anything aftermarket.

Well I am sure there are no hardware issues.
When I recieved the phone, it had Cyanogenmod 12.1 with wifi and bluetooth working. I, myself, like to start from 0 So I emptied the entire thing and re-flashed twrp and cyanogenmod 12.1 (snapshot).
From then on it did not work anymore, no matter which recovery or Cyanogenmod (only snapshot or stable) I try.
RSD is new to me, I am used to my Xperia Pro whoes stock kernel was an img on an XDA main ROM/stock list.
I do not have the stock ROM/kernel, since the phone was already modified at its receive.

I'm pretty sure that the issue is in the "no trouble on formatting everything" bit.
In recovery, you've erased your /persist partition.
As its content is unique for each device, it won't get restored by flashing a stock firmware via RSD Lite. That partition is not included in FXZs.
Specifically, you've lost your /persist/WCNSS_qcom_wlan_nv.bin and /persit/.bt_nv.bin files which are essential for working WIFI and BT. Among other stuff, they contain your device's unique MAC addresses for WIFI and BT.
You can check the content of your /persist folder. If it's empty, it confirms my suspicion.
To fix it, you will need to restore your /persist partition from your backup. If you haven't made a backup before erasing, you will need someone to provide you with his own personal backup of /persist. Then your and his device will use the same, no longer unique MACs...

I believe you have made my issue clear, I am very thankfull for that!
I can't find my /persist folder in Cyanogenmod 12.1 Snapshot which I am currently running.

AFAIK you can't. A rooted phone can't accept the OTA. You would need to Odin the stock firmware, update and then root again.

If you want to stick with the rooted stock ROM, my suggestion would be to backup your phone to the Samsung Cloud, then Odin the new ROM, then restore from the Samsung Cloud. You will get most of your stuff back, including screen layouts, widgets and apps.
If you use one of the fine ROMs by one of the XDA developers - they eventually usually come up with new versions that include the lastest bases, and many times, not every time, you can dirty flash it over your existing ROM and not have to restore much if anything. Of course, your experience may be different so make a nanroid backup via TWRP first.

thanks for the help, i will stick to the stock rom and restore apps from titanium would be better i guess.
I updated my rooted S8+ by making a nandroid backup with TWRP first and then flashing the updated ROM (which will totally wipe your device and remove root).
After that I flashed the TWRP recovery again, formatted through TWRP, and then flashed no verity/Magisk etc. I booted into the system normally once just to be on the safe side and check that everything was looking good.
Lastly, I went back to TWRP and used my nandroid backup and the restore function to bring back just the Data partition and my phone was completely restored. All apps, settings, wallpapers, text messages etc etc where restored with 0 issues exactly how I left them.
Keep in mind that the data partition will not back up user data on the internal memory like pictures, videos and some downloads. You'll want to copy the contents of your internal memory to a PC or external memory and then copy them back and merge them with the new folders at the end. :good:

Lost imei after factory reset and root

Hi guys,
I have a slight problem here, I was using my rooted with magisk and running lineageos17. Unfortunately, bluetooth wasnt working so I reverted back to stock, which fixed the bluetooth problem. I tried rooting the thing then with this method:
https://www.xda-developers.com/install-android-oreo-samsung-galaxy-s7-exynos/
Unfortunately though, this killed my imei. I tried restoring my efs partition with twrp; even tried reflashing the stock firmware, all to no avail, my imei is gone.
Is there any way I can restore it or have I turned my phone into a fancy paperweight now?
Would be cool if anyone could offer me some help,
best wishes,
derelektrischemoench
// edit: I managed to get twrp installed and was able to restore my twrp- backup which i had made before this whole endeavour and voila: the device is back online, has an imei and is able to connect to a network. Hell yea. Thread can be closed, I guess.
