So I've been contemplating and iterating on the idea of dedicating some computing power on a server for remote unlocking/rooting ect. In the past I've had great success doing so with a Pii and having physical access. But I've wanted to try to build something remote and really gauge the viability. If your a native Linux user then you know the pile of driver issues that come with attempting to run Windows VM's to do specific work on specific phones. And its with that I'd like to ask if any you beautiful people have some suggestions beyond the obvious to make this a viable option. Running a dedicated VM on the server specifically for this would be easy but again comes with all extremely annoying driver & serial port hurdles. Are there any docker images out there that could prove to be useful?
Right now the obvious solution to those issues is that when a friend or client needs something done they offer ssh access to their computer with the device connected so all of it can be completely circumvented. So that kind of simple functionality I'll certainly have covered. Looking into & getting answers for people won't be a problem remotely with a server setup properly but when it comes to things like unbricking or rooting Samsung devices anything short of physical access is basically a big big biggg time sink, with no gaurentee of any kind of solution in the end.
So what kind of advice/applications/different methods can you think up that might help bring the usefulness of this little experiment higher?
Also plz keep in mind this IS NOT being designed to offer For-Hire services, I'm just experimenting with the idea I'm finishing up a server build next week and have plenty of things I'll be using it for but I love to hack and just see where we can take different ideas, and this is one I've had great success with using single boards like a Raspberry Pii & one of my favs (just gotta mention it) is my cheap old little Apollo Lake Chromebook running Gallium Linux on it setup for the same plus Apple app suites. Two devices which cost me together less than 200$, actually all the peripherals probably cost quite a bit more than the devices. (well this was also when Pii's were still 35$ and THANK GOD i bought 5, but just FYI if you haven't heard that drought is ending very soon) So much fun and so damn useful!
Some brainstorming fruit :
unlocking/rooting devices remotely :
Server <----- Client Computer+---USB---+Device : Greatest Possible Chance
Full Rooting
Un-bricking
Installations
De-bloating
Tweaking
Server <--ADB server | Application (termux ssh ect.) |--> Device : Almost everything remains on the table IF device previously rooted
Diagnosing Issues
Tweaking
Almost all work on a previously prepared device
Rooting
Unbricking
Had to put in a pic of the Pii & Chromebook I use to do whatever random phone/tablet work my friends and peoples call me for. They're both old and beat up but astonishingly both function great still. Its Pii 3b+ and an Asus C423N - Apollo Lake (Celeron I believe).

I like the idea of ebooks, but i HATE HATE HATE the idea of ebooks being tied to a stores specific ereader. I should be able to read an ebook on any device that's reasonably capable of displaying documents.
So i was wondering if there's any tablets out there (7 inches or so) running android that I could install the readers for amazon/kindle, B&N/nook etc etc on?
I dont really care about it being e-ink or color lcd. They both seem good - e-ink great battery life and color shorter battery life but more uses.
I'd prefer to spend less then $300 if possible. Anyone know of any tablets that fit that description?
Nook Color...............................................................................................................................................................................
Google Search for "Android EReader" I decided to click on the shopping results and found a lot of Android powered readers.
Of course you could have taken the time to search or even just look over the first few post in this forum and found the answer:

I didn't ask if there were ANY android e-readers - i asked if there were any GOOD android e-readers - i.e. i was looking for some opinions on which ones people considered the best.
I know the nook color is also based on android, and I did look quickly at a thread about that on here. But there seemed to be some doubt as to whether the color nook will be root-able. I assume it will NOT as-is allow the kindle app to be installed on it. Which makes it less then useful for my purposes since i want an e-reader that can install all the e-reader apps from the big retailers.
I was hoping some people here had first hand experience with some of the available android tablets and had some recommendations for ones to consider (or avoid) to be used mainly as an e-reader.
Well played.
you're right, i apologize. What i typed in my original post doesn't match what i said in my reply to you. So let me rephrase now and say I'm looking for opinions on what would be a good android powered e-reader. Or actually, any tablet like device with the requirement that it has to be able to handle ebooks from the 3 major book sellers, and the battery should last at least 6-7 hours of continuous use.
I like the nookcolor, although I'll admit I have a bit of a bias (have one).

i thought the nook color wasn't available yet? I thought it was being released the first week of december? I actually looked at a thread talking about rooting it but since I thought it was released yet, i didn't think anyone had rooted it yet. Is it rootable?
thanks
I was one of many satisfied HandyShopper users. Chris Antos had made the perfect
shopping app for the PalmPilot, and I even went so far to that I bought a
Windows Mobile phone because Chris had ported HandyShopper to Windows Mobile.
But enough was enough. My next phone was to be an Android - but how could I
survive without HandyShopper? I couldn't, and I couldn't find an appropriate
substitute for Android - so I had to clone it myself.
AndshoBBer is the result - currently in beta. In some ways worse, in some ways
different but in many ways inspired by HandyShopper. I hope Chris Antos sees
this as a tribute, not a plagiarism.
You may download AndShoBBer from

good idea but not for me
My wife and I really need something that's able to import our massive HandyShopper lists. ToMarket's interface is a bit unpleasant for us, but until now it's been the only thing out there.
What an Android shopping list app, or indeed any modern shopping list app, needs is sync. I really need to be able to add something to our shopping list when I'm at work and have it show up in the app on my wife's phone when she goes to the market, or my son needs to be able to add milk to my shopping list after he's used it all up (again).
A nice touch is some sort of web interface so one doesn't have to type on a teensy keyboard.
I'll give this a try.
In principle I agree with your views on sync - but at the moment I am developing for my own pleasure, and with respect to "modern" this does not include my wife, so I have no personal need for sync, so unless I can do this in an easy way (or make lots of money )....
If you or anybody else has some good input on a library to use for web sync of Android SQLite bases please let me know - then I will look into it.
Anders
Thank you, andbb! I was devasted when I moved from an HTC Aria (WinMo 6.5) running Chris's HandyShpr. I am hoping your tribute to Chris comes anywhere close to his works, as I have been through a half-dozen disappointing shopping lists.
Again, thank you!

For those who might prefer a different approach, "OI Shopping List" (when combined with the "OI Convert CSV" plug-in) does a decent job with import of HandyShopper CSV files.
rShopping List
I used HandyShopper on the Palm for a very long time before switching to Android.
I couldn't find an Android app with the features of HandyShopper, so I wrote my own.
You might give my app rShopping List a try.
I sorely miss HandyShopper, as does my wife.
So why are we using a shopping list app that disappoints us each time we use it? Because it syncs.
These days I think syncing is a must-have feature for a shopping app. I need to be able to add something to our mutual shopping list when I use the last of it. My wife needs to be able to add something while I'm on the way to the store. This is so vital that we'll put up with an otherwise very disappointing program that manages lists in silly and useless ways.
I have yet to find an app with the utility of HandyShopper that syncs.
As I mentioned, OI Shopping List has many features that should appeal to HandyShopper users, including importing HandyShopper data. It doesn't currently sync, but there are some GSoC students working on sync this summer.
Hello, I don't really know if it's all right to post this kind of thread here but I haven't been able to find any other forum that seems like the proper place for my thread. I'd like to say sorry in advance if I have indeed posted in the wrong section.
Anyhow, me and a friend are working on a set of apps and a slightly modified android rom as our IT project this year. We are hoping to win a prize in the local competition which will be held here in Bosnia on 23rd of next month and then hopefully make our way to some international competitions.
I'd like to quickly go over our project.
HIVE OS is an "operating system" based on android for usage in school tablets. It contains some pre-installed applications such as: Notebooks, Books, Drawings... It synchronizes users' documents with the cloud allowing users to access their files from their personal phones, tablets, computers, etc...
As the competition draws closer we have started with writing academic papers such as the research paper. Some stats are required in a research paper. Some testing and data analysis. Thus, as a member of this forum I thought that I could get some interested people's opinions, let them test the apps and collect their feedback...
If you are interested in testing Notebooks, Books and Drawings apps and helping us with our data collection you can download attached apps and once you are done with your testing you can submit your feedback by filling the form over at feedback website.
Some points to keep in mind:
1 .We are 2 high school 3rd year guys. Our experience with android programming is pretty fresh. My friend only launched ADT for the first time as he began this project, whereas, I, even though I had launched it before hadn't been able to produce anything useful.
2. As these apps are intended for tablets, we didn't really put any special effort in trying to make them fit every screen (smaller screens). They should be fine on devices with screen similar to the one of the nexus 4 and higher...
3. Books app requires at least a single book to be present under /HIVE/Books in your sdcard. Otherwise, it will look empty. This is because these apps are supposed to receive their material by means of synchronization. I'll be attaching a zip file (Introduction to Trigonometry.zip) to extract there but if you end up having problems and can't make the app show a book, please skip books app in the feedback form. Thank you for your understanding.
Another note is that we hope you'll go easy on us. As I already mentioned, we are pretty new into android development. The data collected from the forms are going to be used in the academic side of things. Those who know will probably understand... It won't hurt if you give a 4 where you actually think it deserves a 3. We don't want to have graphs which will make it look like our apps suck.
Of course, this doesn't mean that you should go with all 5s. Fill the forms the way you think, but we'd be happy if you didn't give a lot of 1s and 2s...
Thank you for your understanding on this as well.

First off, this is by no means "a thing" as im looking for people who understand, support and might help me with this idea
"The Struggle is real"
for me choosing my next android device is a pretty hard effort as im getting disappointed by various points:
-illogical choices of design: even if i find a decent device to consider as my next one, there is always something that will make no sense to me and bug me, but only after i have purchased that device
-poor development due to unavailable sources: a major requirement when i choose an android device is that it has good dev support and my previous devices have proven this point to an extend, where a nice new android version comes out and the oem no longer supports it: the new version can be ported, but some things that were closed source only work properly in stock roms (which mostly suck)
-ridiculous oem pricing and their visionary software addons:
every device by big oems is overpriced and is bloated and promoted with things that often are not unique at all and can easily be used on every phone
of course the price depends on a lot of factors but in my opinion every oem device can easily be a 100 euros cheaper while still being profitable, as small
oems easily show
"The perfect android smartphone?"
-"supersize my phone, please":
of course also size is a debatable aspect of a phone as some prefer size while others prefer compactness
i prefer efficiency and for me that means a device that can easily be used with one hand, fit in my pocket and
does not waste a lot of surface not covered by screen
-"whith a small phone comes small hardware"
every oem releases a mini version of their newest flagship, but that mini version has exactly nothing to do with its big brother
there are examples where this might not be the case(xperia z1 compact), but then, there are other aspects that make that phone inconsiderable
There cannot be a device that is perfect for every user, but i think that most users can agree on a large amount of aspects that fit their needs, especially if they are powerusers
Conclusion: i would like to collaborate with people that have the knowledge of building distributing and supporting a project based on my idea: the devPhone:

If people ever wondered what those abundant permissions included in sunshine were for, it is in fact to intentionally brick your phone, track your IP address, reset your device and change your wallpaper to a whole lot of balony saying how hard they worked to make hacking responsible and costly and that they will not hesitate to take your only lifeline while you sit there and accept the fate that you will have to spend your pizza money on them and starve for a week under a bridge while people look at you in awe because they've never seen a homeless, beerless, computer geek.
Back to my point.
I have a rooted HTC One m9. I am getting into development. Can people help me with understanding what all the s-on feature restricts besides the band partition and any info we can dig up on that and maybe some on the reverse engineering on how HTC implements this feature? Links, source code, feedback, relative topics, suggestions, and furthermore questions are encouraged. Let's start hacking.
My devices are an HTC One m9 and an HP zbook 15 running Zorin (Linux) OS.
What can we do.
Let's bring hacking back.
Let's be a team of developers in one thread.
