Hey,
So, I've been trying to root a One Plus Nord CE2 w/ A.11 for the past couple of days, and have hit a brick wall. When trying to flash the Magisk boot.img to boot, fastboot prints something like "size too large". The patched file is around 100MB and the boot partition only 2MB. Being the noob, I am, I have 2 questions:
1st. Is it wierd that Magisk made the boot file much bigger than the partition it's supposed to go into?
2nd. If not, and "all" I have to do is resize the boot partition, is there a guide to doing this without bricking the phone?
Thanks in advance!

Yes - Magisk doesn't change the size of the boot image, so you're probably using the wrong image

This can be done in TWRP using parted, but I recommend against it due to the risk of accidentally removing a critical partiton, rendering your device unbootable.

Hey!
First thanks for the quick reply!
I'll try to look for the image somewhere else. I dowloaded the file from Oxygen Installer but have not installed it yet so that may also be the reason the size is different.
1 follow up question, from https://twrp.me/Devices/OnePlus/ I can't find twrp for this phone.
There is an unofficial version here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unofficial-twrp-3-6-2_11-0-oneplus-nord-ce-2-5g.4490091/.
If I still needed to mess w/ partitions on this phone, would there be a way to do so w/out using twrp? Like just using adb/fastboot cmds?
Thanks again!

TWRP has an ADB shell you can use, and you can use parted to resize partitions via your command line. More information here
Fastboot can also erase and resize partitions, but not all manufacturers implement these commands in their bootloaders
Either way...If you get something wrong, you'll brick your device, and I mean hard brick. I managed to do this to my Pixel 2 two days ago.
The safest way is to use TWRP itself to resize /system: wipe > advanced options > select /system > resize file system

Oneplus don't have 2MB on boot partition. If I'm not wrong it's almost the same size as recovery which is 100mb
Or it's 32mb
Also twrp isn't officially on their site because I'm no maintainer. But it's stable enough

Will get pixel 3xl by November 8 9. I am willing to test it for you.
ill have mine by 18th or 19th ill help out if still needed.
Mine is supposed to arrive today. I am hoping that root will be as simple as unlocking the bootloader, patching stock boot.img and flashing. I suspect that it'll be a while before we have a custom recovery though.

Doing this would be extremely unwise without a copy of the stock boot image. I would advise you to wait till the factory images come out. Which should be soon. If you bootloop, highly likely, you will have a unusable phone until the factory images get posted.
Well considering that I would need a copy of the stock boot.img to accomplish this process it seems like we are in arguegreement. [emoji6]

Has anyone unlocked the bootloader? That's all I care about (for now). Is it the same process as the Pixel 2 XL? I'm just curious if anything has changed with Titan being a part of the hardware now.

Your phone comes with a boot image.
You can patch the boot image with Magisk Manager. Which saves a copy of the patched boot image on your device. Then it needs too be transferred to a PC to be flashed in fastboot. My advice is still relevant. As soon as I have factory images, I will try and root.
I have mine. I'm willing to test whatever/whenever it's safe to do so.
I did enable the "OEM Unlocking" in the developer settings. It didn't come with a USB-C to USB -A cable, so I cannot connect it to a PC anyway.
I have phone in hand.
I would love to test, once the root situation has been figured out. Links to how to get phone rooted appreciated (I'm already aware of how to root it via Magisk (once factory image or standalone boot.img is released), and how to root via TWRP (once TWRP is released)).

There is no "standalone" boot image yet. It comes with factory image. Which should be out soon. The boot image is in your device. You can patch the boot image with Magisk Manager or sideload the Magisk zip. I would not do either of those until you have the factory image. If you bootloop, your device will be useless without factory images

No 2 the boot image in the device. Unlock bootloader.
Download Magisk Manager apk. Im about ready to unlock mine right now. In Magisk Manager select patch boot image file. It will save a copy to your device. Transfer to PC.
Fastboot flash boot image. You will bootloop im sure. AVB has changed with crosshatch.
DO NOT attempt this without factory image.
I will be doing this when factory image comes out.

Just "unlock" the other one is not valid for this one. Sorry, I should have mentioned that!
My apologies gentlemen. You do need a separate copy of the the boot image from the factory image to patch in Magisk Manager. Sorry for the wrong info. Actually it makes sense doesn't it.

I got my Pixel 3XL last night. Excited to get things going on the Pixel 3XL, coming from a Nexus 6P.
I was sad that the factory image isn't immediately available on google's site for this phone, and I don't want to brick it trying to install Magisk without a factory image to fall back onto.
In any case, woot, woot! Phone looks great and I'm going to transfer over my line today.
Cheers,

Has anyone successfully rooted their T-Mobile variant as of yet? My bootloader unlock token should be available in a couple hours, and I'm trying to decide which is the best method. I was thinking of going with patching the boot.img myself, however I can't find a full ROM zip of 9.5.5 (which I'm on now). The next choice is obviously TWRP...I'm just hesitant because of the encryption issue. Does anyone know if formatting data and then moving files back to my internal storage will allow me to decrypt, just as it did on the 6T? Thanks in advance

Mine should be here today. And I'll tell you my plan.
I'm going to try to flash twrp and try to get the stock img files from the unmodified slot. Then I will feel safe. To do anything
Well, I did it! I unlocked my bootloader and flashed TWRP! I then formatted data, and transferred the TWRP installer and Magisk to internal storage. I flashed both, and rebooted to recovery. Both files were still there, and did not get encrypted! Now, my wifi and sound seem to be broken, but I did see something about that somewhere else...now to find it, hah!

It did! About 10 minutes later than the time I applied for it Now, I rebooted to recovery again, and now I don't see my files anymore I guess formatting data DIDN'T fix decryption. Now to get my sound and wifi working again...
Figured I'd try formatting data a second time. It's worked for me on the 6T in the past
I think your going to need the boot.img to restore WiFi and sound.

Try flashing this patched 9.5.5 boot.img . The boot image has to match the same version your currently on. From your screen shots it looks like your on 9.5.5 so it might be your best bet in restoring your Sound and Wifi.

Hi, I just rooted my 7 Pro with the official guide video ( https://www.xda-developers.com/unlock-bootloader-root-oneplus-7-pro/ ). I've done all the steps correctly but when I try to boot into system on partition B, my phone goes straight back into TWRP Recovery.
The A partition works fine.
Am I supposed to use the A partition?
Mine does the same, I had to reflash twrp from fastboot on slot b to make it work.

If it's anything like the pixel it's really only made to boot the active slot. So I'm going to say it's pretty normal that you can only boot one slot they both share the same data.

Just a reminder for people who only read the oneplus 9 forum and not oneplus 9 pro one:
[RECOVERY] [11] [OFFICIAL] TeamWin Recovery Project
Introduction: Team Win Recovery Project or TWRP for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. We started from the ground up by taking AOSP recovery and loading it with the standard recovery options, then added...
forum.xda-developers.com
I tested it and flashed it on my oneplus 9 LE2110 and it works.
Again, as i always have to write to people.
Be careful, only do something you can undo.
Before you "Flash Current TWRP" do a full BACKUP!
Does said recovery perform full back-ups of partitions and restore features ?
Edit
I booted it up . Decrypts perfectly. Backed up modem just to see for myself. Rebooted back onto system . Booted twrp again and it found saved partition to restore. This makes life so much easier. Time to go get a full system backup !! Cool
Exactly. I'm super happy. Now the OnePlus 9 Is finally a good phone. Without TWRP it's just risky.
Im sure some bugs are still there but it looks very promising.

Hi there, I have a question:
When you have a new device, would the following work:
1. Unlock bootloader
In fastboot mode:
2.
Code:
fastboot boot c:\twrp.img
In TWRP
3. Install TWRP
4. Install Magisk
5. Reboot - then you have Root, TWRP?
6. Upgrades can than be done in TWRP by installing the files and than intalling again TWRP and afterwards Magisk?
Best
Axel
It appears you are asking. If I am incorrect, my apologies. With the 6t (also a a/b OP device)
The process I always used was
1) reboot to bootloader
2) boot twrp.img
3) install twro zip
4) reboot recovery
5) upon TWRP reboot, install magisk
6) profit.
Anytime I tried to go ahead and install Magisk in the same round as installing TWRP, it would install to the opposite slot making me have to do the whole process over again. Ymmv
XDA is Great, and, yet, at the same time: XDA is very challenging.
With so many able to contribute, and the lack of external editing capacity ( unlike SO ),
it's difficult to distill the information.
Okay, Great! There's a TWRP for the OnePlus 9 !
I used TWRP 3.5 and Magisk to root a Lenovo Tab M10, without any need for external input.
The Answer I'm looking for here is: Am I able to install / root / whatever my T-Mo OP 9 with TWRP ?
Does anyone have any definitive solutions ?
Thank You, in Advance, for any assistance !

Sadly, No, boot-loader is locked. Never encountered this on both previous OP 6t's.
Hence my confusion. When I walked out of the t-Mo store with my 6t, I had No issues.
I used the wonderful mauronofios tool, to do it All with no troubles.
crash my 6t, forced to take a "9 5g" from t-Mo, and now I am regretting it.
Wondering what has changed, and by whom..? t-Mo change policies, or OnePlus ?
Actually, I've been a t-Mo customer for 16 Years ! First time I've ever had to "Ask Permission" to have my phone, or my SIM unlocked...

How to fix this
id avoid TWRP if on 11.2.8.8 already. it can boot from fastboot and even install itself as your recovery but it will not mount data. i tried the refresh sizes trick in backup and then the default_password for password to decrypt and nothing. pretty sure twrp mishaps are what bricked my phone last too . thankfully it still boots, just the recovry section is effected
ill try and flash the OTA zip tomorrow. sick of messing with it for now lol
Are we still avoiding twrp
I hope you already know how to flash GSI on devices with dyamic partition already. If not then you can follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ynamic-super-partition.4256667/#post-85271987
If youre on stock before flashing GSI then dont "fastboot delete-logical-partition product" like other tutorials may suggest. Just flash the product image (fastboot flash product [insert img here]) attached below and it will get resized automatically as well, giving you plenty of space to flash your GSI.
If youve already flashed GSI before following this guide and have done "fastboot delete-logical-partition product" then just create product partition (fastboot create-logical-partition product [size]) and flash the img on product.
whichever course youve taken you can now flash magisk through twrp or patch the boot img and flash that.
Please note that this product image wasnt made by me and the credit for it goes to: @Allexwin50
tested on infinix zero 8 X687
Thanks for the tutorial, I will give it a try but have one question: you said to" create product partition and give size " I don't understand about size!

@kusti420 if I've flashed a GSI on to stock (apart from flashing vbmeta and TWRP) can I fastboot flash that product.img and then successfully TWRP flash magisk or patch with app (using Phh SU temporarily for root) ? is that enough ?
EDIT 1: thought I'd just see for myself, flashed the product_gsi.img and my phone (S20FE 5G) still booted. tried flashing magisk 21.4 zip from TWRP and got a bootloop. will check later if I can patch my boot.img and post.
Hey, where did you take this product_gsi.img? I think it does not work with Android 12, I wonder if it can be updated or something like that.

Right, so what to do after installing the GSI like this. How to install Magisk? I don't have TWRP. Do I have to "securize" first? Help.

Obtain a stock copy of your boot.img.
Patch it through the magisk app before you do your whole thing installing your chosen gsi.
Once you have the patched image, you can fastboot it using fastboot flash boot boot.img in cmd onto your gsi ROM.
Make sure to install the boot.img to both slots A and B. Then go back to your active slot.

It's locked to your boot image, so using 100% stock image removes superuser since it's no longer system as root.

Hello kusti420
I had already deleted the product partition when I found your post.
The GSI was not cool.
I reflash the product partition and reflash the GSI, now it's good.
Thanks for the file and the tip.
